This is strictly representative of what the stock market is doing, since I am no longer working and have not added anything since July. HOPEFULLY, getting this clown show that the election has turned into over will have a good effect on the months to come. Not taking Covid into account though...

Hey everyone! A friend of mine suggested I join one of these race threads and I figured why not. Data is NW for the items that I bother to track (investments, cash, and debts).

FI number is about $750K.
Plugged a few numbers and it looks like I'll hit the 500K mark in December 2023.

Gonna throw my hat into the ring on this thread. It's crazy to go back and see the progress over the years. I came out of grad school in 2010 with $90k in student debt, without a pot to piss in, earning $40k a year. Four years ago this month, I was celebrating a zero net worth after a long period of focusing on attacking the loans. At that time, I decided to refocus my efforts on saving and investing more and to not go as crazy on the loans. Just last week, my personal investment accounts crossed the $250k mark for the first time. And this week, I will be making my final student loan payment. It feels great!

It's a little surreal for me getting to this point. I'm in the camp where it has felt like a big deal. Both of these goals, paying off the student loans and hitting $250k in investments, have been on my mind for so long and now both have been achieved... at practically the same time. I do feel different-- "rich" in the sense that my financial anxieties already seemed to have lessened. I don't feel prisoner to any debt and I have confidence in my nest egg. Now, in my 34th year, my traditional retirement (e.g. 65+) is already taken care of and all efforts moving forward will continue to shave off the years until true financial independence. (Now I know everyone uses their own form of accounting; I'll be following based on my personal investments/retirement accounts--separate from the wife's).

Checking in about 15 months after hitting $250k. Just this week I eclipsed $312,500.00 for the first time. This was a cool number for me, because I love to extrapolate the growth potential of what has been already been amassed... In 10 years, it should be worth appx $625k; in 20 years, it should be $1.25m; and in 30 years, at age 65, it would grow to be worth $2.5m (inflation adjusted)! Although, there is no way I am working that long though. Lol. Will be drawing well before then, but the security feels really good... Okay, back to plodding along in the race. Good luck everyone!

Took less than 3 months after hitting $312.5k to reach 1/3 of a million. Surpassed $333,333.33 for the first time today. Hoping to keep the momentum rolling!

Chugging along nicely here. Still using the same accounting. Surpassed $400k in investments for the first time today! Just a matter of time to crush $500k... Keep at it everyone.

Well, that little market boost from the election pushed me over end line yesterday. Crossed over to $500k for the first time! Crazy to think that it has only been 9 months since the $400k mark--especially considering where we were in March. Made it from $250k to $500k in 34 months! Best of luck to everyone. Will see you in the next 'Race'!

So I hit 489K and change today, and I'm thinking I am good calling it 500K, since half of it is in euros, which are worth more than dollars.  My back of envelope calculation says that given the mix, I just hit about 527K in dollars.  On the other hand, I may be back here once the French tax authorities decide (I've been waiting since MAY for a response to my income tax filing) how many kilos of flesh they will be taking.  Also, I am very sad about the beating the dollar is taking because I live in Europe but get paid in dollars and do NOT want to go back to the days when the dollar was worth 66 centimes because that's gonna leave a mark.

Our investments and cash surpassed well over Half a million dollars!  :-)

Investments and cash are at $560,000 and net worth crossed $700K.
I suspect this is not my last post but I am moving on from this race. I wish you continued success.

My history of this race, about 30 months or less.
==============================================================
Mar-18   $249550-INV  $381297 - NW ---> fell below 250K, what a rollercoaster this year has been!
Aug-18 $291293 - INV $ 376293 - NW ---> Writing off 51k, we are building a house.
Sep-18 $292395 - INV $377395 - NW---> Lots of unexpected expenses this month. My job is also not on firm ground. Bad new manager situation. Starting new job search. Anyone have job for me :)
Oct-18  $271500 - INV $357200 - NW ---> Yay volatility
Nov-18 $279200 - INV $365200 - NW ---> Big spending month, over $10000 unexpected spending on Medical expenses, travel reservations, hotels, electronics, shopping deals and gifts. Also got new job, lateral move.
Dec-18 $257500 - INV $344000 - NW ---> Hope this market remains low or flat for next couple of months so I can plough more money in. Happy new year you all! It is interesting that the assets like primary home provide so much stability in rough times. If we have a paid off home or enough cash to pay it off safely invested it provides much safety in difficult times.
Jan-19 $290132 - INV $373300 - NW ---> Big bounce back. But I wish it came after Feb. Its likely there will be more opportunities due to various uncertainties in current short term.
Feb-19 $317800 - INV $406000 - NW ---> Big payday of the year helped cross 300k easily.
Mar-19 $323000 - INV $411500 - NW ---> Not much to say this month. we went on 2nd vacation of the year already and so associated expenses affected the growth.
Apr-19 $337600 - INV $426600 - NW  ---> Expensive month, we paid for family member's medical expenses. Tragic situation at young age. Makes a strong case for big emergency fund.
May-19 $326000 - INV $416000 - NW ---> Yay! Volatility. I was able to add few hundred $s more than usual to investments. Usually about $6000 a month in addition to savings currently, rest gains or losses in market. It motivates me to compare with high savers, that way I tend to push a little harder or keep consistent. Its a race alright!
Jun-19 $348000 - INV $439000 - NW ---> DW's pregnant with our second baby :), That means now I have to plan for big expenses.. Minivan, Medical expense and more. I am trying convince DW that we can put off buying minivan for another 2 years. Wish me luck!
Jul-19 $355000 - INV $546000 - NW ---> Construction on real estate we were building completed, so added its value back into Net worth.
Aug-19 $349000 - INV ---> Medical expenses and vacation made us go back wards. Market didn't help, but I am happy its flat or down.
Sep-19 $362000 - INV ---> Slow and steady. We are half way through our pregnancy, Just about 4 more months to go!! Its so hard to resist various temptations to spend. minivan, finish basement, build a sunroom. Desires are endless.
Oct-19 $362000 - INV ---> No change, nada.  Spent over $15000 on paying off taxes, credit cards, couple of mortgage payments ahead, medical, travel for next year, daycare for rest of the year. Looks like my journey with you wonderful folks will be longer than I expected. Whew! no end in sight as I see us moving towards big purchases soon, that MINIVAN.
Nov-19 $3750000 - INV
Dec-19 $391000 - INV ---> Very pleased with $162000 increase in investments and cash this year. Thank you downturn in 2018. Lets keep this up people. Happy new year, new decade!
Feb-20 $377000 - INV ---> I was looking forward to market opportunity and here it is. Welcome back Volatility! I am buying.
Mar-20 $320000 - INV ---> I have been buying. Hoping this sale continues for a while. Maxed out IRAs and investing in taxable now. Trying to refinance mortgage to free up some cash-flow. For anyone in this race this is the time to double down.
Apr-20 $374000 - INV ---> Refinanced our 15 yr fixed mortgage to 30 yr fixed and a significant pay increase kicked into effect as well. These monthly cash flow improvements and reduced expenses will boost monthly additions to investments by $1600.
May-20 $403000 - INV ---> Above the previous high. Top is in!
Aug-20 - Our liquid stash is at $467,000 and total net worth at $678,000. In last 6 months we invested well over 50K. Hope our luck continues.

Hey everyone! A friend of mine suggested I join one of these race threads and I figured why not. Data is NW for the items that I bother to track (investments, cash, and debts).
Those are some nice looking monthly numbers for this year!

It's been a wild ride of a year to be sure, but it's been good to the 'stache at least! I gotta keep up with your numbers for as long as I can before you outpace me entirely =)

I never (normally) check out net worth other than at the end of the month, but...this market run-up compelled me to check. We're at like $465Kish as of last Friday, and today looks to be another up market day with news of another promising vaccine.

Anyone else checking more often than they should? I know it doesn't make any difference long-term, but getting pretty close to this thread's goal is exciting for me after a very rough year mentally and emotionally.

Yes, I have found myself checking daily starting last week.

Normally I check everyday and especially so when market moves up. But I stop checking my net worth and ignore it when there are continuous down days. It helps with my emotions knowing who I am.

I continue checking the market everyday though to do some market timing with small percentage of my funds. (Heresy, I know)

It was one of my new years resolutions to check the market less often, update my spread sheet less often.

Then Covid.

Now I have been checking it almost everyday for months, sometimes multiple times a day when I am board at work. Really would like to get back to the once per month thing. It is an addiction for sure.

NW update:
Jan. 2017   $42,000
...
Feb. 2019   $242,032
Mar. 2019   $258,467
Apr. 2019   $271,294
May 2019   $281,760
June 2019  $278,145
July 2019   $296,924
...
Aug. 2020  $402,692
Nov. 2020  $427,563

Just plugging along. Might be at more like $475k since our town/state is experiencing a COVID-related real-estate boom and our house value has likely increased about 20%. But that seems like kind of a tenuous thing to put into this calculation so I am sticking with my more-conservative home equity estimate.

Hello all,

First post here, happy to have found a community to share my goals !
Current net worth at 273k euros (yes I'm in Europe) at age 32 (not counting home equity), goal is 300 before year end, then at least +100k a year to achieve 1M before the age of 40.
After this I don't know what I'll do :D

Thanks for all your inspiring posts !

Just hit 300k at the end of October, which was my goal for this year ! November and December are just bonus and diversification (will probably throw about 5k in crowdfunding to try it). Also working on a strategy using credit leverage to build a real estate portfolio.

Hi there !

Fast forward from my last post, I just hit 500k euros this month !
The end of 2019 and start of 2020 was great, then Covid :/ However I managed to control expenses (e.g. no overseas holiday obviously) and saved almost as much as 2019 so far. Thanks to the recent stock boom I hit the number !
I can also see the growing power of compound interest and passive income starting to come in (half of my portfolio is "paper real estate" and currently producing more than 700 euros/month) but still a long way from early retirement (with 2 kids now expenses won't go down soon), plus I really like my job :)
Thanks again for the inspiration and see you in the next thread

Dec 17     229k      132k - moved a portion of the Stash in something I don't consider as an investment (for now)
--
Dec 18     319k      194k
--
Dec 19     462k      297k
--
Jan 20     469k       304k
Feb 20     481k       314k
Mar 20     480k       312k
Apr 20     512k       363k
May 20    536k       363k
Jun 20     539k       374k
Jul 20      552k       388k

Obviously everyone had a great month with the market, so same for the Miller clan. My wife is due to get a sizable year-end bonus, and we should have a decent tax return come spring (I over-withhold from my day job to compensate for my writing side-hustle, but the writing has been down this year $-wise). The goal is still to hit $500K and graduate this thread sometime in 2nd quarter, 2021, if not earlier.

03/1/20 - $201k
04/1/20 - $195k

06/1/20 - $237k
07/1/20 - $286k (received a generous gift towards new home - $40k)
08/1/20 - $297k
09/1/20 - $345k (home value jumped on Zillow - counting Zillow estimate minus mortgage towards NW)
10/1/20 - $441k (switched jobs and cashed out sick days; collected signing bonus)
11/1/20 - $462k
12/1/20 - $489k

Been a banner year for NW, not expecting nearly as many big jumps in 2021. Should be graduating in January, maybe February if the market dips.

If I look at cash and securities only (not counting rental equity or primary residence equity) I belong on this thread

1/2016  $137K
1/2017  $154K
9/2017  $244K  (cash out refinance of primary residence)
3/2018   $208K  includes 0% credit card debt.
6/2018  $213K    ditto but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance, $328K.
12/2018   $250K   ditto but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance, $353K
12/2019  $328K  but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance, $425K
6/2020  $343K, but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance. $448K

cash out refi for one of our rentals

12/2020  $428K but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance. $530K  yay!  even with 0% CC balance we're over $500K!

Projection to be fully over $500K in liquid investments in early 2022, perhaps sooner.

My annual bonus paid out this month.  Never had a bonus for the whole year get paid out in one lump sum before - easily makes this my highest cash inflow month (and coincidentally one of the lowest outflow months) of my career. Stocks being on a rise doesn't hurt, either.

First number is retirement savings & other long term investments, second is total NW including cash emergency savings and real estate equity. I'm focused on retirement only for this challenge rather than total NW.

November 2019: $280,569 (total NW $405,660)
December 2019: $292,062 (total NW $423, 991)
January 2020: $299,351 (total NW $430,390)
February 2020: $281,810 (total NW $412,616) ouch!

I expect this thread to see several graduates this month given the market, happy to say I am one of them! This was my goal at the start of 2020, but I didn't think mid-year I'd hit the mark. I imagine there will be a good amount of continued volatility in the near future, but the hudsoncat family will just keep stuffing money in the investment accounts regardless of what happens.

I was 2.5 years in this race. I hope I can add the next $250,000 in less than two years.

Good luck everyone, see you in the next thread!

Joining the thread now that my retirement account balance crossed $250k. I'll consider myself graduated after my liquid assets cross $500k mark. My target is to graduate in 4 1/2 years by mid 2025.

Listing both liquid and fixed assets.

Nov 30, 2020:  401k equivalent accounts - $278,000, equity in houses - $92k, total (including some debt) 360k
