Aug-19: $204485 invested + $250k equity = $454k

Sep-19: $204404 invested + $250k equity = $454k so ultimately a flat month.

Should see a decent bump in equity come Sept though, bonus will go towards our 2nd mortgage.

There is a chance we are moving continents soon and would rent the house out at that point so opted not to invest bonus into debt paydown and keep it invested/more liquid.

Oct-19: $225122 invested + $250k equity = $475k

Nov-19: $239478 invested plus $225k equity is about $465k.

Decided to reduce my equity a bit since realtor fees would be higher than I had anticipated. Home value has been flat for 6 months now. Any move abroad won't happen until at the earliest next summer.

Target graduation date is tough to say but perhaps around end of March 2020 since it's mostly going to be dependent on investments rather than equity.

   Date (2019)       Liquid NW            Gain
   Jan 1       $212,860           (+8,101)
   Feb 1       $230,743           (+17,883)

   Aug 1       $299,427 (+11,934)
   Sept 1           $313,257 (+13,830)
   Oct 1           $321,358 (+8,101)
   Nov 1           $336,180 (+14,822)

The market pushed this one up, progress!

In even better news I received approval to formalize a new department I started and got a 33% raise and promotion out of it. The extra will go directly into savings, and should accelerate my stache further once I sort out proper corporate investment governance. Anyone have any Canadian tips or do-it-yourself guides?

I don't count my house equity, so this is just investments minus loans (I invest instead of paying off my low interest loans).

Congrats Moose.

its interesting how some people just start phoning it in a few years before retirement whereas others keep pushing.

I sort of view it as an insurance policy to maximize future consulting earnings potential to keep pushing but I'm having a rough time doing it. Current pre-early retirement career is really a long application process for post-retirement flex opportunities.

Mar-18   $249550-INV  $381297 - NW ---> fell below 250K, what a rollercoaster this year has been!
Aug-18 $291293 - INV $ 376293 - NW ---> Writing off 51k, we are building a house.
Sep-18 $292395 - INV $377395 - NW---> Lots of unexpected expenses this month. My job is also not on firm ground. Bad new manager situation. Starting new job search.Anyone have job for me :)
Oct-18  $271500 - INV $357200 - NW ---> Yay volatility
Nov-18 $279200 - INV $365200 - NW ---> Big spending month, over $10000 unexpected spending on Medical expenses, travel reservations, hotels, electronics, shopping deals and gifts. Also got new job, lateral move.
Dec-18 $257500 - INV $344000 - NW ---> Hope this market remains low or flat for next couple of months so I can plough more money in. Happy new year you all! It is interesting that the assets like primary home provide so much stability in rough times. If we have a paid off home or enough cash to pay it off safely invested it provides much safety in difficult times.
Jan-19 $290132 - INV $373300 - NW ---> Big bounce back. But I wish it came after Feb. Its likely there will be more opportunities due to various uncertainties in current short term.
Feb-19 $317800 - INV $406000 - NW ---> Big payday of the year helped cross 300k easily.
Mar-19 $323000 - INV $411500 - NW ---> Not much to say this month. we went on 2nd vacation of the year already and so associated expenses affected the growth.
Apr-19 $337600 - INV $426600 - NW  ---> Expensive month, we paid for family member's medical expenses. Tragic situation at young age. Makes a strong case for big emergency fund.
May-19 $326000 - INV $416000 - NW ---> Yay! Volatility. I was able to add few hundred $s more than usual to investments. @Epor Usually about $6000 a month in addition to savings currently, rest gains or losses in market. It motivates me to compare with high savers, that way I tend to push a little harder or keep consistent. Its a race alright!
Jun-19 $348000 - INV $439000 - NW ---> DW's pregnant with our second baby :), That means now I have to plan for big expenses.. Minivan, Medical expense and more. I am trying convince DW that we can put off buying minivan for another 2 years. Wish me luck!
Jul-19 $355000 - INV $546000 - NW ---> Construction on real estate we were building completed, so added its value back into Net worth.
Aug-19 $349000 - INV ---> Medical expenses and vacation made us go back wards. Market didn't help, but I am happy its flat or down.
Sep-19 $362000 - INV ---> Slow and steady. We are half way through our pregnancy, Just about 4 more months to go!! Its so hard to resist various temptations to spend. minivan, finish basement, build a sunroom. Desires are endless.
Oct-19 $362000 - INV ---> No change, nada.  Spent over $15000 on paying off taxes, credit cards, couple of mortgage payments ahead, medical, travel for next year, daycare for rest of the year. Looks like my journey with you wonderful folks will be longer than I expected. Whew! no end in sight as I see us moving towards big purchases soon, that MINIVAN.

Thanks IALS,

I have never really felt like I push in my career, probably a result of some level of impostor syndrome. I always though I was just vaguely competent.

It's getting harder to ignore the evidence here though I suppose. This latest "push" seems to be my version of helping out my new family, I can't breastfeed no matter how hard I try so hopefully I can earn enough to buy us the freedom to be home with our children as much as we want.

Having consulting options post-retirement is definitely part of my insurance policy as well, it'd be nice to set up proper contracts and scope to cover any large expenses or life upgrades that my family can see along the way. Hopefully the pushing we're doing leads to burnout very shortly after we have enough stashed away! Then we also won't fall for the old 'just one more year.' With the firehose running full blast I wonder how hard it will be to turn off when it comes time...

Including IRAs, 401(k), HSAs, and Investment Account.

Feb 1, 2019 - $253,172
Mar 1, 2019 - $265,289
Apr 1, 2019 - $275,052
May 1, 2019 - $288,722
June 1, 2019 - $274,536
July 1, 2019 - $294,229
Aug 1, 2019 - $299,759
Sept 1, 2019 - $296,607
Oct 1, 2019 - $303,353
Nov 1, 2019 - $312,446

Today is my last day at work and will only have one more paycheck for the year. :) I thankfully was able to max my 401(k), H.S.A. and IRA for the year, so any further growth after next week's check will be solely market fluctuations. I have not not had a job since I was 2, so this will be weird come Monday morning... although, I do need to stop by the rental property and fix the dishwasher, so I am not officially off the hook. We have just rented our house out so we can do extended travel. I have not included in the NW calculation as I am really not sure I want to muddy up the investments. Plus when we do come back from our travels, we will still need a roof over our heads... so I am just going to leave it out of the calculations for now.

I didn't think you could contribute to an IRA in a year in which you have a 401k available to you? How did you get around that?

IRA/Roth IRA is available to you depending on income limits that apply to them, it doesn't matter if you have access to employer provided 401k.

I made it!

A good earnings call a few days ago has my company stock moving back up, although it's still quite a bit below where it was at its peak earlier this year.

My prediction when I joined this thread(based on rate of growth in the previous thread) was that I'd hit $500k in September of 2019 so I'm not too far off! On that note, it took me 2 years and 2 months to double from $250k to $500k, so at that same rate (seems unlikely) I'll hit $1 million by January 2022.

It's been fun, see you all in the next thread!

Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk

I can 100% relate to imposter syndrome as well as the difficulty in voluntarily turning off the firehose when the time comes. Excited to see what the near future holds for you and how that translates to FIRE timelines.

congrats to the movers and shakers! HB and I were hoping to pass the mark by the end of the year- but probably not.
We were wanting to run our numbers to see what date early retirement could be- what is the easiest one to use?

I just googled and used this one: https://engaging-data.com/fire-calculator/

Quite exciting! It says I can retire in 8-9 years

Graduated from the 250k race last month so entering this one this month:

Summary of accounts:

Date      Bank Accounts      Taxable Investments      IRAs and 401k      TOTAL      CHANGE
   September 1, 2019      $34,060.56      $107,178.92      $100,816.28      $242,055.76      -1.70%
   October 1, 2019      $41,940.06      $111,460.07      $102,729.37      $256,129.50      +5.81%
   November 1, 2019      $42,198.89      $119,326.23      $106,347.53      $267,872.65      +4.58%

250k by the end of the year was my stretch goal, so I'll let it ride the rest of the year and set a goal at the beginning of next.

Well, my goal was to be a half-millionaire before purchasing a newer vehicle, but a breakdown led me to splurge on a 3-year-old fancy new one w/ 20k miles. Will pay it off within the next couple of months so investment contributions will suffer a bit. Not feeling super guilty yet but we shall see.....

Hello - I am currently at $295,970 in investable assets.  The only issue is that we are really at the heights of the market right now, and I fear that this will be more of a contributions slog than anything else the next couple of years.

you've done over 100k this years and are more than 1/2 way to the target ot get out of the thread.

the compounding value of money will soon start to be noticeable. Won't be long before return outpace contributions (they probably do this year).

You're up just shy of $200,000 in 34 months! That's $5,735/mo! Even without further contributions, you'd graduate in about 6 years assuming a 10% rate of return (which is consistent since none of us are inflation-adjusting the numbers we post here)

I officially FIREd in 2015 with a sizable military pension, but went back to full time work last year after just over three years of part time work/housebuilding.  I have one more year left on my contract before returning to full FIRE at the end of next year.  Would like investable assets to be around $500K so I can begin roth conversions.  $12K left in IRA/401K contributions this year; $37,500 for next year; hoping for 8% growth with a traditional 70/30 stock bond allocation.

May 2018: $250,640 (was at $330K, but withdrew about $80K for a one time unique property purchase; tax bite and penalty hurt, but I paid well under market value so it was a bit of a wash; loss of compounding is another story though)
January 2019:  $322,585
November 2019:  $404,464

I decided to join. I think I did the race to $100k too. I use liquid investments only in my calcs. I don't include the cars, house, or bikes.

5/18-$100k
11 months to $250k. I downsized houses and moved across the country which accelerated things quite a bit.

4/19-$250k
5/19-$256k
6/19-$272k
7/19-$279k
8/19-$265k
9/19-$275k
10/19-$283k

I'm projecting that I'll hit $500k sometime at the end of 2021 at the soonest. Not too shabby with $72k salary and a family of 4.

Hello all,

First post here, happy to have found a community to share my goals !
Current net worth at 273k euros (yes I'm in Europe) at age 32 (not counting home equity), goal is 300 before year end, then at least +100k a year to achieve 1M before the age of 40.
After this I don't know what I'll do :D

Thanks for all your inspiring posts !

Just hit 300k at the end of October, which was my goal for this year ! November and December are just bonus and diversification (will probably throw about 5k in crowdfunding to try it). Also working on a strategy using credit leverage to build a real estate portfolio.

Impressive progress for Europe. Are you based in one of the highest earning countries or simply a very high earner in another geo?

My prediction when I joined this thread(based on rate of growth in the previous thread) was that I'd hit $500k in September of 2019 so I'm not too far off! On that note, it took me 2 years and 2 months to double from $250k to $500k, so at that same rate (seems unlikely) I'll hit $1 million by January 2022.

It's been fun, see you all in the next thread!

Well done! I was ahead of you back in January and you just dummied me over the year in this "race"! We would have been tied if I didn't start up a masters program. I'm going to try and catch back up and try to beat you to a million, will be over there by the end of the year, hopefully..... Congrats! Your progress is amazing!

Wow, thanks! A masters program seems like a pretty reasonable explanation for slowing down, and even with that you've still made really good progress! I've been insanely lucky with my company's RSU and ESPP programs, that makes up a huge chunk of my increases. Looking forward to seeing you in the next thread real soon!

Hello from the Race to $250K Thread.

After some vacillating these past few months, I can no longer deny the fact that I am now a small fish in a bigger pond.

MonthYearNet Worth
Jan2017103,000
Jan2018160,000
Jan2019204,000
Nov.2019255,000

I only count retirement and bank accounts.  I don't plan on selling the house so, while paying it off will be a substantial drop in expenses, I'm not in any hurry to pay down the 3.75% a year interest (rip Boarder42).

I usually get a substantial year end bonus from a side business that should give me some breathing room next month.

Savings are good but stagnant right now, about 35%.  I am hopeful that when the nanny expenses are gone in 3 years things will tick up--although that money will likely be shifted to 529/home addition for our growing family.

For my own purposes, I'm hoping to stay on track these next few expensive years and graduate by Jan. 2023, but no later than Jan. 2024.

The big news for me this year is that my employer took away the company 401k.  So I basically got a 4K pay cut.  It will be discussed at the end of year meeting, but I am looking for suggestions.  I am priced out of Roth IRA, and my only thought is to talk the boss into a simple IRA to get back at least 13K of tax savings investments.

Aside from that, I'll try and get up to speed on the new pond and hope to make it through 2020, and 10+ years of market growth, on a still positive streak.

Hello,

I've been silent for more than 2 years!.  A lot happened during that time.  We sold our condo; we bought a house; I was laid off; I was rehired - too much drama overall.  Once we could, we restarted adding monthly to our savings.

P.S. I only track non-equity here.

                      retirement    total non-equity
July 2016:      $150,350      $204,450 (start of tracking)
Dec 2016:      $167,700      $219,800
Dec 2017:       $207,000      $315,150
Dec 2018:       $236,800      $324,150
Nov 2019:       $283,300      $372,500

I hope we are back on track.

August 15: 310,000
September 1:  343,890
September 21:  352,721.  I should be able to save more than this.
October 25:  ~$421,000.  This will go down a bit this month due to need to pay husband's rent/set him up in apartment.  But next month is another month.  I need to WORK HARDER ON NOT SPENDING to minimize the 2nd-rent hit.

As predicted, the marital separation was a little stumbling block--turns out he needed quite a bit of $.  And about 3K in property and habitation taxes were due.  And I only got 2/3 of my regular pay, and no expense reimbursement, for Reasons that should be corrected in the next week or so.  In the grand scheme of things, though, the situation is not too awful.  And December should bring another decent-sized chunk.  I really, really need to crack down on my spending, though.

November 21:  $412,466.

Hit my 2019 goal of $400k! NW has quadrupled in the last three years since hitting $100k in Dec 2016. Goal for 2020 is to graduate this thread :)

Excited to be both joining with invested assets and graduating with total NW in the next few months. Should hit $250k invested by the end of this month and be right around $480-490k total.

Congrats to @Imustacheyouaquestion for making such quick work of this thread. I am targeting about $10k gains on average once I join so hopefully I can replicate what you have done.

Nov 2019    $348,140.01
Dec 2019  $356,233.57

Not a bad month! And it would have been better had we not went ahead and paid for 50% of our spring break vacation (airfare and half of lodging is taken care of)

I'll be very happy with $360K or so come the end of Dec 2019. That would represent a +$108K increase in just 12 months.

Just starting out tracking.

A year ago our liquid investments were squarely in the mid 300s and $500k felt so far away. I looked at this thread and felt discouraged from posting. But, since then we’ve shot up to $$430k due to me going back to work (I stayed home for a few years to have kids) and now we can significantly contribute to our stache again.

Nov 2019    $430,667

After watching out stache grow from compound interest and my recent contributions, $500k doesn’t feel like it will take forever to reach.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
