First down quarter! The market had to try very hard to pull that off, combined with an unusually high quarter of spending. Down markets are good at this stage, hopefully I am unable to leave this thread until 2020!

<(~)`(~)> Here's to a rough and tumble 2019! (does that look like glasses clinking?) May we have another four quarters of 15% losses!

What is House dollars?

I really enjoyed reading the 10-100k thread. Let's start a race to a quarter million!

Net worth:

Jan 1, 2015:    $110,000
Feb 1, 2015:    $114,700
March 1,2015:  $119,400
April 1,2015:    $132,700
May 1,2015:     $138,000

So these races are net worth?  I thought we are listing just Retirement Account.

It is up to you which you want to report. Some of us report net worth and others just report their invested assets.

First number is retirement savings, second is total NW including cash emergency savings and real estate equity.

January 2015: $98,619

January 2016: $101,235
December 2016: $140,779 (total NW $269,089)

January 2017: $151,307 (total NW $276,052)
December 2017: $193,677 (total NW $364,276)

January 2018: $203,876
December 2018: $194,973 (total NW $367,535)

January 2019: $210,742 (total NW $375,622)

The total NW is over $250k but I'm focused on retirement only for this challenge. A good chunk of the NW is real estate equity.

Brand new to this forum, this is literally my first post. Excited to see this take off towards 250k and beyond. Started professional career in this country back 2012 at 31 years old, effectively starting from scratch. Super fortunate to have gotten a great opportunity in 2016 that has really allowed me to catch up a number of years in a short time span. My wife has been retired nearly 15 years, she is significantly older than me and she is therefore not interested in planning for the future. This is 100% a solo effort.

Edited: Added a lot more detail from what I could find on Mint.

Oct-12: $0.00
Nov-12: $432.15
Dec-12: $1192.8
Jan-13: $1542.90
Jan-14: $7286.11
Jan-15: $16985.5
Jan-16: $26770.16
Jan-17: $58399.77
Jan-18: $95469.77
Feb-18: 111724.81
Mar-18: $112878.91
Apr-18: $117425.35
May-18: $123001.77
Jun-18: $125427.65
Jul-18: $135341.45
Aug-18: $138059.7
Sep-18: $142216.90

I currently max out 401k, my Roth IRA and my ESPP which is pretty much all I can get away with due to S/O not being on board (which is somewhat understandable as she is on a pension already and significantly older than me). I also put about $4400 per year in HSA currently and may consider maxing that out soon as well. We could do with more of an EF buffer but again, she sees no value in it as she considers her income '100% guaranteed'. It is for the most part as the retirement fund she is relying on has done really well.

All done for the month
Oct-18: $149116 + $3500  in HSA which I'm including for the first time. = $152616

Graduation Target is June 2020 but January 2020 is my stretch goal.

Nov-18: $142004 + $3922 in HSA = $145926 Slightly lower drop vs what I had expected but I had some one time expenses and my tax advantaged savings vehicles are full for the year.

Dec-18: $145596.37 Investments incl 401k + $5265.18 HSA = $150861.55

Not a bad month, hope to eclipse the all time high next month and maybe even hit $155k.

Jan-19: $136537 + $6212 in HSA = $142749 Oh well, dropped significantly but still early in accumulation stage so monthly monitoring probably doesn't even make that much sense.

Excited to start contributing to my 401k again in January and to have taken advantage of the stock market pullback through ESPP.

My goal is to hit $210k as a stretch goal at the end of 2019.

Feb-19: Exciting end to this month and a big jump due to ESPP and some employer sponsored HSA contributions means I ended with $159520 split between 401k/Taxable/Roth/ESPP of $151306 and $8214 in HSA (most of this is invested though).

Edited with today's investment returns.

2019 Goal = $135k (Invested Total) & $222K (Total NW)
2019 Stretch Goal = $160k (Invested Total) & $250k (Total NW)

I do not plan to leave this race until the Invested Total is above $250k.

Code: [Select]
Month End 401K        IRA Invested Total Home Value Rental Value Debt         Total NW
Dec-13 $43,660 $0         $43,660 $120,000 $120,000 $232,000 $51,660
Dec-14 $52,943 $0         $52,943 $125,000 $125,000 $227,000 $75,943
Dec-15 $55,622 $0         $55,622 $130,000 $130,000 $227,000 $88,622
Dec-16 $68,870 $700 $69,570 $200,000 $130,000 $281,000 $118,570
Dec-17 $96,294 $1,167 $97,461 $240,000 $135,000 $317,727 $154,724
Dec-18 $103,098 $3,861 $106,959 $240,000 $125,000 $296,155 $175,804
Jan-19 $110,710 $4,151 $114,861 $240,000 $125,000 $313,885* $165,976

*I added $18k-19k of debt for the rental that I had not been tracking.  I realized that if I was going to count the rental equity & mortgage, I probably should count the other rental debt too.

Invested total is still down about $4k (not counting new contributions) from the 2018 month end high that I have recorded but it is $11k over my Jan-18 numbers. Which is about equal to contributions for 2018, so I am claiming that 2018 was not negative (just flat), for me anyways.

Good luck to everyone, and see ya all up there soon!

It's been a long hiatus since I posted on this thread and I decided not to go digging for my history, so starting from where I am:

1/31/2019 $181,982.57

We got a bigger bump than usual this month, not only because the markets did well, but because my husband's company pays out a year's worth of 401K matching on Dec 31, which really hits the market on Jan 1.

I'm so happy to be back on track. We moved across the country this past year and haven't sold our old house yet. Once that sells, we'll see what happens (not sure if we'll make any money on it yet or not.)

I don't count my house equity, so this is just investments minus loans (I invest instead of paying off my low interest loans).

JANUARY UPDATE

03/01/18: $100,871
04/01/18: $104,410
05/01/18: $109,333
06/01/18: $111,851
07/01/18: $115,134
08/01/18: $118,949
09/01/18: $121,714
10/01/18: $123,222
11/01/18: $123,710
12/01/18: $132,287
01/01/19: $130,778
02/01/19: $142,434 ($11,655 increase)

Biggest increase since I began tracking my net worth 🤑. This is why I like the down months, because it makes months like this possible. The next few months are looking good with lots of overtime and a good tax return. Goal for 2019 is 180k, with a stretch goal of 190k.

My EOY for 2018 goal was $215,000, so it took me an extra month to get there.  No complaints.  I switched the entire family to my emplyer's health insurance starting this year, so I'm losing an extra $600+ a month in income, which makes a big difference.

I spend too much time doing the math on how long to retire, even though the end date never really changes.  I'm working to set middle goals, which is why I like this thread.   Still hoping for a graduation before 2020!

Haven't posted in a while. 2018 was rough on stocks - I lost about 22k in the market while saving 35k that year. But that's the short term. Long term I'm doing great. Locked in at a well paying job and I'm simply putting money in the market while I'm young.

Was just thinking the same thing, I'm here for another 10 months if this January performance repeats itself for the rest of the year :) Realistically though probably another 16 months.

Hello Racers!

Here I am at the starting line - I hit the $100K invested threshold for the first time yesterday!!!

I figure it was ~4 years from -20K to 100K and my admittedly ambitious goal is 250K invested by the end of 2020.

Anyone have a starting pistol?

I'm thinking maybe another 3 months for me, but who knows what the market will do? I'm just amazed at how nonchalant I can be about these kind of numbers. Growing up, this sort of wealth seemed so unattainable.

I was just having that same thought! Heck, until 3 years ago (age 40) I was hovering around zero net worth, and if you had told me then that I'd soon be adding about $100k NW per year, with some months up to $15k, I never would've believed it!

1/15/19 - $101,635.
1/31/19 NW: 108,165
Projected Graduation Goal NW (12/31/2020):  204,027

Is that 204,027 your projected NW on 12/31/2020? Hummmm... I'm afraid you will need extra 45,973 to graduate this race 😊. You should keep the 2020 goal, I think you can do it.

In February 2017 we had a networth of $88k and I thought, wouldn't it be fun to have $200k in two years? Didn't quite make it, but got pretty close.

I am tracking only IRA/401K/taxable accounts.
5/31/2018 $100,519.07  - not even the slightest clue on target date...I'll be here for a few years :)
6/30/2018 $105.187.34
7/31/2018 $109,052.07
8/31/2018 $116,748.06
9/31/2018 $125.833.33 (should slow down for rest of year as both 401Ks are maxed)
10/31/2018 $121,400.49 (market pain)
11/30/2018 $120,116/63
12/31/2018 $115,318.38 (more market pain and put some resources towards our new AirBnB venture - looking forward to buying stocks on sale now that 401K is back in play)
1/31/2019 $121,188.34 (next couple of months are my favorite time of year - 401K is in play, bonus and employer 401K match (3% of compensation) all hit)

January recap: January spending was extremely elevated, but market returns more than covered what took place, so my net possessions increased, though not to their November levels. Some of the spending will hit in February (since it was charged on credit cards where the bill comes this month), but a small price to pay for a timing issue that ultimately will mean not a penny spent in interest, and redeeming cash back this month as the rewards balance is over $50 again.

The big (and good) news is that I did get into the graduate school program I wanted to, and am eligible for a 40% tuition discount and partial tuition reimbursement upon earning a B- or better at end of semester, provided I get the paperwork filled out properly. That was by far my biggest expense for January (tuition), despite getting the discount processed and the application fee waived. Classes have begun, I am reminded at how out of practice I am in math, although I am working to understand the concepts, as really that's the bulk of what's being taught, not so much the calculations. It's definitely an ongoing adjustment getting used to school again, but I think that I can do it, and am working through the kinks to do so.

Other big expenses included new tires for the car, and another oil tank refill. Despite keeping the heat on 63, it really does seem to be once a month. Can't wait to progress with the house renovations so we can start putting more insulation in this old thing and replacing drafty windows.

I sold off the last of my investment positions that I wasn't particularly thrilled to hold and reallocated the proceeds elsewhere, and also moved some things into Vanguard I had been wanting to for some time, so that was a positive. I continue to save enough that it hurts, although sometimes it feels like investing is just a form of spending as I siphon money off to the market, it does feel tight here sometimes. I am sticking with that, since it's "supposed to hurt," and this will be a good year to measure the dividend growth strategy I'm using in my taxable account, to see how much more income I make as most companies raise their dividends around this time of year.

The damn basement project is still hanging over our heads - we have a contractor who's agreed to do the work but no specifics on timing yet. Hopefully this week or next. Still scouting out credit cards for my wife, hasn't been much free time of late with school and all. On the plus side, I did get a small piece of overtime. It's nothing, but $115 is still $115. It'll be in my next check.

December 2014: $89,173 (I don't have the exact date I hit 100K, so including this here anyway)
December 2015: $106,299
December 2016: $147,449
December 2017: $182,600
December 2018: $219,103
January 2019: $224,363

Looks like I'm now on track to hit $200k by May.  My goal of $250k by Sept/2019 is gone... looks more likely to happen around Sept/2020 now.

Also, my wife has quit her job for good to stay at home and raise the little ones.  We'll be saving less each month; but hopefully with a bigger child benefit cheque.

Today's good stock market day pushed me right on through! Thanks to my continued investing through the correction and the fact that the markets have mostly recovered since Q4 2018 I hit a new personal NW record today. And it's a personal NW record that signifies my graduation from this group!

Here's my NW table going back to August:
8/2/2018           232,044
9/25/2018           249,578
10/23/2018   236,854
12/25/2018   220,631
12/31/18           229,086
1/23/2019           241,773
1/30/2019           243,650
2/5/2019           248,145
2/12/2019           251,448

Woohoo! Time to go celebrate in the most Mustachian way I can imagine. By getting together with all of my closest friends and buying more index funds.
