Congratulations to everyone else who has been building their net worth.  It's been an amazing year to watch all these numbers going up, and the encouragement every month seeing people reach for new heights.

Congratulations, ohyonghao!!!

This month marks the end of one year of this challenge. How did you all fare?

Net Worth went up 45k this year, and now over 14% of the way towards FI!

4/30/15: $94,786.61

CONGRATS!! What an awesome achievement!

Our May numbers are in and:

March: 33,929.50, +11.15%
April: 36,544.04, +7.71%
May: 38,327.20, +4.88%

Our increase this month wasn't as big as I would have liked, but we paid ~$3k in tuition, so that's an expense that's worth it. :)

I had to go back and revise our NW for the year so far since I was getting conflicting numbers based on which software I used. I ended up just making a spreadsheet to track it manually. The March/April numbers I posted here previously were actually too low.

Next month we'll definitely hit the big 4-0! Exciting!

Seems to be very consistent wiggle!

Thanks :)  My month to month comes in pretty consistent but would still love to improve things especially after seeing the month to month progress some others in this thread are making.

Fiancee and I are gaining about what you are every month. It's about $2000 +/- market gains/losses. I think I will have some free time to devote to some side work in a couple of months that might help increase this number, but we'll see of course :).

my networth has gone from -$52745 to -$23,782.18 in one year!

Stashing just around 29k in a year is awesome! Congrats!

Stats time!

In the year ending May 31, 2015 the 30 'stachers with up-to-date NW in the spreadsheet:

Cumulatively stashed $1,089,612.54 !!!

The most improved (largest absolute increase) goes to bokonon (83,473)!

The average (mean) increase was 36,320.42

The median increase was just a hair lower at 32,476.67

I more than doubled my net worth in a year.  Here's to doing it again this year :-D

It was close this month, we had 2 weeks in Taiwan visiting family.  A fifth paycheck last month helped to boost us over the 100k mark while also making an early payment on our mortgage.  I could have delayed the payment a couple days and boosted our numbers more, but I did enjoy the drive to reduce spending more knowing that I had only $x before dipping below $100k.

For celebration, well, we didn't really plan anything ahead of time, but I did have a beer at a restaurant while singing to myself:

"I'm mister fancy pants with a networth of $100k,
I'm mister fancy pants, sipping a $6 beer
which I could have bought at the store for $1.50
ohhhhhh, yeahhhh
I'm mister fancy pants."

But really, how do people justify getting not just one beer, but multiple beers at a restaurant, which I did witness there?  And not just on a special occasion, like hitting a new high on net worth, but at nearly every dinner out?  I couldn't stop thinking of the fact that I could nearly have bought a 6 pack for the price of a single beer, and at one table the cost of their drinks was more than our meal, which we also took home and had for dinner with some rice and veggies that night.

Congratulations to everyone else who has been building their net worth.  It's been an amazing year to watch all these numbers going up, and the encouragement every month seeing people reach for new heights.

Sweet, I was wondering what to do next, the $1million NW isn't very interesting to me since my long term plan includes moving to a place with a cost of living that can be sustained on a 4% SWR with $300k :-D

I'm getting so close, we are at $80,000 in investments right now.  We are getting married in about 6 weeks, so I have been building up more cash than we need.  After the wedding I plan to max out both tIRAs for the year.  That plus 401k contributions will get us to $100,000 in either September or October.

Congratulations to you ohyonghao and to all of us on an incredible year.  We saved over $1 million together!  I almost think it would be cool to keep updating your networth in the spreadsheet even after you hit 100k...imagine what our group numbers would look like after 10 years.

I'm proud to be part of such an awesome group, keep up the good work everyone!

Home values are climbing - comps are showing my house should be worth about $20k over what I paid for it less than 3 years ago. I also max'd my tiRA for 2015 - first IRA contribution ever (excluding rollovers)!

Liquid:
$6544.47

Vanguard:
$40,099.03

Franklin Templeton:
$3075.61

Home equity, assuming $160k value:
$32,635.23

Total $82354.34.  401k contributions are about $1600 a month and none have gone out for June yet. That should be roughly $11,200 (plus $1300+ in principal payments towards my house), putting me at $94854.34 plus market changes by year's end. :)

Beginning of June update:
Cash/Savings: $7,698
Mutual Funds (non-retirement, house savings): $10,651
Work Retirement Accounts: $37,383
NW: $55,732 (increase of $1,548)

End of June Update:
Cash/Savings: $6,614
Mutual Funds (non-retirement, house savings): $10,568
Work Retirement Accounts: $39,193
NW: $56,375 (increase of $643)

Bad month for me.  Fair amount of spending, some of it necessary but admittedly some of it frivolous (new DIY speaker kits I bought to build, going to rationalize it as a learning experience in woodworking and building skills but still not ideal).  I am glad to know however that even in a bad month for me I am still increasing networth.  Most people I know having a bad month means taking on more debt.

My last post was a little different from my mint snapshot; I don't tend to count my car and motorcycle when I look at my net worth. June wasn't very good for me; but I'm still going in the right direction. The debt is my chase freedom card.

Ah Greece.

By looking at the ETF versions of the mutual funds I hold, it looks like my portfolio will drop today by about 60% of my take home pay for the month.

This is why I like to focus more on savings rate as opposed to net worth - at least while I'm quite a ways away from my FIRE number.

My net worth will get a huge hit when I compile all my investments thanks to Greece, I am not sure yet (I will find out about it tomorrow), but I have a feeling it will be the first month this year where my net worth will be lower than the previous month simply because of what's going on in Greece *sigh*...the only positive spin in all of this is that I will be buying stocks next week at major rebate.

Will know the results at the end of the day, but NW is way down. About $2,500 down due to an accident with the old car. As far as my accounting goes, it's worth nothing until it is sold, declared a total loss, or whatever.

Won't know for sure until tomorrow, but my prelimary estimates look like our end of June number will be ~$42.6k. That's up 11% from last month. I can't wait to get the final numbers! I really think we can hit $60k by the end of 2015!

I have been a perennial lurker on this forum and this is my first post. I hope you guys are open to let a complete noobie run along on this “everyone’s a winner” race. A detailed post or a journal is long overdue, but I will try to keep it short for this thread.

My professional life has been a mix of various financial mistakes. But a more serious NW journey started in a third world country post a grand wedding in 2011, with multiple debts totaling ~$35,000 (with interest rates ranging 13-18%) and a net worth of -15,000. I suppose marriage brings its own responsibilities and we started budgeting everything and tracking where we are spending, but were still conservative in our savings approach. DW and I started feeling our “hair on fire” and seriously attacked debt only in 2013 and cleared all the debt by Apr 2014. We hit positive NW in Dec 2012. This is how things went.

Nov 2011: -15,000 (debt -35,000)
Dec 2012: 1,000 (debt -30,000) hit positive NW.
Dec 2013: 10,200 (debt -20,000) moved to Canada mid 2013 and had our first child as well, and then the NW journey really took off with a promotion.
May 2014: 36,500 (0 debt) SO and I now vowed that the only debt we may ever consider is a mortgage
Dec 2014: 48,500 (had our second child, I know MMM proposes 1, but 2 is our number)

And in the last 2 months
May 2015: $63,000
June 2015: ~$65,550
So that’s where things stand.
Half of it is in third world investments in RE(a land 25% under water due to some unexplainable political machinations), mutual funds (growing at a handsome 23%/annum) and govt pension schemes (growing at 8%).
Canadian NW stands at 30,500.
Inv:      29000
Cash like:   3500
CC Bal:   2000 (paid in full every month)
I thought I would track the Canadian NW part alone, with the overall NW makes more sense to see how far I am along on FIRE target. If things go to plan I should hit the 100K mark in mar 2016 and hit 50K in Canadian investment accounts by Jan 2016. i.e. if the Greece melt down proves a no starter, who knows how deep the cut is if Greece is to exit the EU.

Phew!! that’s a long first post. I promise to keep it simple from next week.

Looks like Greece is taking a dump on much of our sheet this month, my row included. Still managed to be up 3350 despite the headwind.

June will be my first negative month since joining the thread, atleast on paper. The reality is much better though as there is a month's worth of hotels and travel costs from last month for work that are weighing me down heavily, when that is reimbursed hopefully in the next week or two (hopefully the market keeps falling in the meantime so I am making a larger than average purchase on the cheap ;)) I should jump back up quickly.

2015 Net worth:
January: 61 647,49$
February: 63 787,57$
March: 64 489,46$
April: 65 584,07$
May: 69 863,33
June: 69 561,33

For the first time this year, as predicted, my networth went down from the previous month and all this despite having saved 62,75% of my income. Like I predicted, my investments went down big time this month because of what's going on in Greece. I think I lost 1K$ this month if I combine all my investments.

NW May 31, 2015: -59,533.84
NW June 30, 2015: -55,028.72

Change: +4,505.12
Zwillow says my house appreciated 5,000 this month, I don't buy that so I'm holding my house value steady rather than changing it.  NW change reflects savings, debt pay off and very very slight gains in some of our retirement accounts.

Goal for the year is to average 5,000 change per month.  Going to have to focus a bit more to achieve that.

June 2015: $85.9k

July 2015: $89k
August 2015: $87.8k

Mr. Market dropped my net worth by $5493.77. I never like seeing my net worth drop, but hey, in this case it also means I bought my investments at lower prices this month! I also tax loss harvested $4914.45 of losses. So that's a $3000 tax deduction at my 25% fed + 6% state marginal tax rates this year, and I carry forward $1914.45 of losses to next year (where I expect not to have any capital gains, so it will again be deducted against income).

Saved 64.8% of my income this month, but this is one of two months of the year that I get paid more than normal.

Hm..the spreadsheet looks funny :/ Methinks someone had trouble with the "sort" feature. Undo!

Anyway, congrats to all on progress!

Also seeing the market headwinds, but still ended the month up 4.5% and above the 3/4 mark :-)

Looks like someone accidently deleted some cells, then someone updated the spreadsheet to the new current values column, then someone has sorted incorrectly. We need to go back to the 0154GMT on the 1st of July version.

I'm loving the market at the moment especially with a triple pay month. Getting a big jump next month too with a few grand windfall and a dividend payment coming in, expecting to easily break 20,000.

Hmmm I actually saved a lot of money in June since was net about 2100$ in cash.  The investment accounts offset that progress by a bunch though.  Hopefully things will look better in July, but ended June at 71735$.  Also had to pick up a loan repayment for 500$ a month which is coming directly from the funds I was using to invest.  Hoping to use that as motivation to cut back on some of the lifestyle creep I've been letting in recently.

You know, I get on this thread to update my progress, and I look around at the other people in the top 10 Net Worths or so in this group and think "wow they're increasing their NWs so fast!" and I get the slight feeling that we're moving slowly.  Then I realize I had only hoped our NW would go up 30k this year (stock market and God be willing) and look to see that it has already gone up almost 20K in 6 months.  So basically we're kicking ass.  Thanks to everyone in this group for being awesome motivators.

Just curious what is the average increase in NW per month or per year in this thread, who start with 10K or less at the beginning? From this we can calculate how long will it take to reach a 100k delta from zero on an average. Also, what is the average salary (guesstimate) on this thread? This could shed some light on what investment vehicle contributed to the rapid increase in NW for some.

This is a great idea - we could definitely add two columns to the spreadsheet. One can auto-calculate based on average NW change and the other we can let folks fill in as they feel comfortable.

The only thing a salary column wouldn't capture is changes in salary as it would be a static number - not sure if anyone cares to get down to that level, but thought I'd point it out.

Ugh, my paltry contribution of $250 at the end of the month got me to +$5 last month. A combination of market headwinds and reduced contributions as we stockpile cash for renovations.

At least we'll have a new driveway this month without having to go into debt, but it does hurt the savings.  I also look forward to not worrying about the shovel catching on the driveway and nutting myself next winter! :)

Oh boy, this is great! A thread for us "newbies" to ER! It can seem so out of reach sometimes reading about all the achievements of Mustachians about to FIRE with a million sacked away; it's really nice to read posts from people just starting out on their ER journey. This is the first year I'm really getting into it and my net worth should be around $45K by the end of the year between 401K, Roth and personal savings.

I'm aiming to be worth $75K by the end of next year, and hopefully 100K the year after that!

Hello Fellow Mustachian's,

Found the MMM website about a month ago, was already a mini mustachian without even knowing it. Have been sitting on the sidelines reading a bunch of the threads but as this particular topic is a current goal of mine, I decided this maybe just the thing to help keep me focused on the goal to 100K. Current NW is $$35,596. Projected year end NW should be about $45k.

Paid off my student loan this month - it was 0% but still a nice milestone.

Also got the government retirement credit of $500 for the year, so currently sitting at $22,800, from $16,600 a year and a bit ago. It's encouraging to see it add up with just small steps.

I'm getting there!

$55,337.49 investments/deposit accounts
-$148.84 CC balance waiting for payoff
$37,193.16 home equity using Zillow (which is hopefully less than optimistic)

NW: $92,381.81

Not factoring in cars at all, but if I did I could add ~$15k.

$7,618.19 to go! I'm sending roughly $1900/mo to my 401k, so I should clear 100k in November-ish!
