** had a dismal financial year. Or I should say, I made some VERY bad investment choices (listened to a friend about an 'investment opportunity' and of course, it flopped).  Had planned to have graduated out of this thread during '22.

However no need to fuss, I've self-flagellated enough. Shall move forward and make better choices in this upcoming year.

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501
December 2022: EUR 50,344

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

YES!!!!! I managed to get to my 2022 goal of EUR 50K (just barely, but did it!). This is the halfway mark......!
I spent some time doing my 2023 plans and EUR 60K is a stretch, but doable if we keep very strict to budgets. There will be some travel this year, a few large (expected) expenses, but I'm hoping we can keep stuffing money away to continue our road to 100K.

@la Condessa That's some nice progress. Especially considering how the market went in 2022. Keep it up!

Thanks.  It's nice to hear some encouragement, especially as I don't feel like we've managed very good progress lately.

31/05/2020: €21.280,05

I have been pretty AWOL from this forum and this thread, since I have had a few years with limited employment and life happening. I am glad to see that I am back where I started XD. Its a couple of days early, but these seem to be the numbers for now:

November 22: € 21,636.38 +€ 972.77.

This is a very good month and I have been very diligent with the budget. Also we have received a high energy prices subsidie from the governement, which helps a lot.

01/01/2023: € 22,315.45 +€ 679.07

I put a lot of money into savings this month, but the market didn't help. I also prepaid a whole year of health insurance, which was about another 1250, so I am pretty pleased with the end of the year. IN part due to unsuspected bonus from the boss. Love me some bonus.

Over a year after first, briefly touching $100k, and over 5 years after first entering this race, today I am leaving with $103.3k!

The jump is helped partly by my new, higher income, but significantly more by market gains following a year of chucking money in despite seeing no return.

ETA my first post in this thread:

Joining for the new year, and I'll probably be here for a while... As of this month I am debt-free and I'm narrowly on-track to max out my ROTH by April. My spreadsheet says I won't hit 100k until 2024.

I'm not going to join the next race because I'm planning to combine finances with my partner in a few months anyway, but it feels good to have hit this milestone all on my own. Thanks for the camaraderie everyone!

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501
December 2022: EUR 50,344

January 2023: EUR 52,461

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

Very good month. The markets were really good! Since we have booked several flights/accomodations for our holidays and it needs to be paid in February, next month I expect a movement downwards. But still on track to the goal for 2023.

@Serendip: I will cheer with you. You are getting so close to the 6 figure number. Keep up the savings!

@Tass: Graduation is 1 year earlier than you expected when joining the thread. Impressive!!!! Now the next stop is getting to 200 together with your partner!

@LittleWanderer: a new high! This gives energy to get to even more new highs in the next months.

My largest single month increase, my new personnel high for net worth, and oh so close to graduating this thread. Unless there is a big down turn in the market I should be graduating from this thread next month with a bit of buffer. It is exciting for me to see such large increases and it almost feels surreal! Congrats to everyone else as it appears many of you had exceptional months as well!

Real progress!  Partly the market and partly executing the plan.  And partly my husband really getting fully on board for the first time.  He’s doing awesome.  We’re on track to finish filling the IRAs for last year before the cutoff.

Nice result this month, due to the market moving quite a bit. Didn't save as much money as I hoped, but I am stockpiling money for a bigger hobby-expense. Trying to stay strict with myself for that one.

Congrats @TyGuy

I’ve been focusing on investing over paying off debts in my 4 years of saving. We’ve built a nice nest egg that should buy us a few years without employment if needed. I will track my net worth here, excluding house equity.

2/3/23: $7,700 - first time positive since getting married

Ay carumba.

This month was a big push to put money into RRSP's before the deadline combined with the fact that I'm in a no-buy/low-buy year
(also bought & paid off plane tickets for June).  I didn't make all this money in one month, some was moved out of little emergency accounts that weren't counted in this challenge before (ie..an envelope with cash and a little hidden-from-me online fund..ha) but am still feeling inspired.

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501
December 2022: EUR 50,344

January 2023: EUR 52,461
February 2023: EUR 50,213

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

This is the downwards movement that I planned for. Paid all outstanding travel expenses (we will travel in April, May AND July.....) and paid off all credit cards, so from now on it's upwards only for the rest of the year (hopefully.....).

@M5 : congrats! You made it!
@regenaeb : I feel the same. I make my regular contributions, but markets are slow....... I keep waiting for the market to recover.....

01/03/2023: € 24.052,03 +€ 781,37
In terms of savings this was a better month than last month, more than 30%! But in Jan, the market helped and in Feb they stayed flat. So it seems like the previous one was better.

All in all a good month. I also got the news that my parents will help me buy a house, which is fantastic. Its gonna eat a lot of this liquid money, but I'll be able to buy a home :D despite being a single earner.

Another tiny step in the right direction. Markets took another downturn and we bought the kitchen of the previous renters in our new place. My share of that was close to 2k €, so actually quite happy that the numbers still went up this month (some of the cost was offset by selling the kitchen in the old place, but that one was crappy and way less €€). We finished our move last weekend. February was really hectic with renovating the new place to be fit to move in, so I'm looking forward to some months just coasting along.

So close! Starting a low-buy year has made a big difference in my savings rate.
Just need to see how much GST I need to pay for taxes and then I'll hopefully hit this goal in the next month or two

Looking at my net worth over the last three years always makes me feel very accomplished.

May 15, 2020: $5,972
March 31, 2023: $72,766.

Most of that is real estate value from buying a house at a very good price at a very good time, but I still feel pretty good about it.

That said, the last year has been pretty static and it's time to get much more serious about socking away cash.
