Hello everyone! It is my first time posting in this thread, I just made by way over from the race to $10k thread which I just surpassed.

Here is a basic breakdown of the numbers as of the end of the day today:

Total Cash/Cash Equivalents: $31,642
Total Liabilities: $20,131

Net Worth: $11,511

Virtually all of my liabilities are student loans. I also have some minor balances on my credit cards, which I pay off monthly. I've been aggressively attacking the student loans (see my participation in the student loan challenge if curious) and have made steady progress.

As for asset composition,  20% are in checking accounts, 13% is in my HSA and 67% is in my 401k.

June ended around 36,000 (estimate, was too busy to exactly keep track). July ends with my NW up to $38,676.

Happy with my progress, though I've been spendier than I should.  On a plus side, it looks like I'll be taking a new job which should see a ~20% bump in pay, plus a nice sign on bonus. So my NW should begin to grow more quickly! Ohh and my commute will be dropping from 42 miles down to 2.5 miles! As a result I'll be saving a ton on gas and wear and tear on my car.

9/29/17 - $11,511 (First post in thread)
6/30/18 - $36,000
7/31/18 - $38,676
8/31/18 - $40,277
9/30/18 - $50,572
10/31/18 - $46,085

October Notes

Ouch. Market downturn coupled with a zero paycheck month (I get paid once a month, but my October paycheck came at the end of September) led to a significant loss.

The month was not without its positives. I opened up an IRA and set my 401k contribution to max (won't max in 2018, but will in 2019).

Awesome job @Jim Fiction.  October was a big 'ouch' for everyone, but you are doing all the right things.  Keep on rolling!

01/2018: $40796.81
02/2018: $41337.51
03/2018: $42682.42
04/2018: $46138.41
05/2018: $48761.77
06/2018: $51084.06
07/2018: $56155.54
08/2018: $55622.63
09/2018: $62036.49
10/2018: $64543.48
11/2018: $63002.61

Blergh, my investments went down, plus I had the medical bills I forecast, plus some back taxes from my home country (I am an international living in the USA, so my taxes can get complicated). But those are all paid off and taken care of. All things considered, I guess I should feel good that the drop wasn't too major. I hope I'll be able to get back to gaining next month. I have a flight home for the holidays, but I was able to cover most of it with points, so I still think my expenses were substantially higher this month than they should be in November.

@Steeze

I feel like my liquid worth minus debt is best.
I'll let the house and mortgage offset each other.
This also doesn't include monthly spending monies or planning for 1 off yearly expenses (insurance etc) as I keep that separate.

This is a 2 person household and is a joint total. Also, in the UK so all in Sterling.

A - Liquid Worth - Debt (not mortgage).

Oct 2018 , £16,285.16
Nov 2018 , £24,975.06 (+£8,689.90)

Big gains because of a profitable Month on some Forex trading. Unlikely to see a jump like that again.

All the best.

NW October 3rd: 11,203
NW November 1rst: 11,585

Just like everyone else, I saw some euros "evaporate" due to market swings this month. The number of shares in the portfolio keeps going up every month, which keeps me motivated to stay on track.
I'm not much of a contender race-wise, but at least I'm moving in the right direction. It helps that I'm mostly transferring money to the savings account and not investing the bulk of what I save currently (because: house buying plans). I know stocks are on sale right now, and it's tempting but having the savings in a safe yet liquid place is worth forgoing the sale at the moment. Or so I keep reminding myself...

Thoroughly beaten up this month and that wasn't even due to the market. Had my bike stolen within a week of purchasing, left my kindle on the bus, need root canal surgery, injured foot and shoulder on separate occasions. Hope to leave that all in Octobers history though. There was some loose spending thrown in there as well which I need to address. Lifestyle creep is real even when you are well aware of it.

Apr 1 - 65.4k (+400)

Oct 1 - 79.6k (+2900)
Nov 1 - 79.5k (-100)

My first negative month this year, despite some decent saving the market kept me down.  it's a win-win though, either I get cheaper shares or I graduate to 100k+ if it continues going down or recovers.

Joining now but I do have some historical data. This seems like a fun competition!

I do not include my savings to buy expensive "fun items" like new cellphone, electronics etc. as it is not very big, and I just started it in July. My checking account is also not included as it has money I will likely spend this month. Money in retirement accounts that is not vested is also not included. Part of the big jump in between April and August is that part of my 401K vested 20%. My investments generally go up by over $1200 a month, so to get to 100k should take me about 5 years if it does not appreciate. My savings rate will probably be higher next year, as I am looking for a new job in a lower cost of living area, or if I keep my current job, the 401k match goes up to 6% for 4.5%.

Net worth:
Dec2017:$7800
Apr2018:$13,200
Aug2018:$22,800
Sep2018: $23,645
Oct2018: $23,658 (+$13)
October had some market swings, and I am currently negotiating some medical bills, so I don't know how how November is going to be, but I seem to be heading in the upward direction.  Good new is I can pay all my bills and at years end, my 401k will be fully vested!

Hi all!  Jumping into this challenge.  Very inspiring seeing a long list of graduates already.

Net Worth: $13,390

I'm sitting on a reasonably sized student loan, but am trying to make minimal payments as it is inflation-indexed only.  I'm in a good position in some ways, as there are certainly a few low-hanging fruits I could knock out which would definitely reduce my spending (eating out probably being the worst of these).  Hopefully this challenge will provide some of the inspiration that I need.

Sep-18: $73,657.42   (+1,641.04)
Oct-18:  $71,492.32   (- 2,165.10)
(rough market despite contributions almost at $1K and more debt payoff, another $750)

November will see my last consumer debt paid off (excluding the mortgage) so by January 1st, I hope to be contributing about $1K each month to my 401k + HSA, plus more to my taxable account (or Roth IRA, haven't decided yet).  I'm still paying off my medical debt which is at 0%.  I have had great progress this year!  I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere after seeing how great I did last year and how far I've continued to come this year.  W00t!

Was away for the internet for almost 2 weeks so here is my late, end of month update :)

9/4/18     73,600
10/4/18   75,950
11/7/18   75,960

Market loss wiped out much of my deposits.

I've decreased my automatic deposits in order to have more cash to purchase 2 properties I have under contract.  Pushing back my 100k goal one month from June to July 2019.

Wow, you had a REALLY good 2017!  I found MMM in very late-2014 with a similar NW and started getting serious about saving and investing in 2015 as well.  I just hit 80k, looks like we're in a tight race to graduate to the next level

It's not that impressive... I corrected my house value. I freaking lucked out and managed to buy way under market value - and this was before the market heated up. So I adjusted that number up a bit because I had way more equity in the house than I calculated. I'm not using current market value btw, the housing market here is nuts. I could put it up for 50% more than what I paid 3 years ago!

So, all in all, my savings rate was about the same as this year.

Race you to a 100k :)

Not a bad month considering the market!

Wow, you had a REALLY good 2017!  I found MMM in very late-2014 with a similar NW and started getting serious about saving and investing in 2015 as well.  I just hit 80k, looks like we're in a tight race to graduate to the next level

Race you to a 100k :)

Challenge accepted.  Poor timing though, my main work is seasonal and I'm about to be laid off for 3 months at the end of November.  Going to have up my side hustle if I want a good shop at taking this one :)

Don't be sorry, I enjoy it, it's like a mini-FIRE I get every year!  I use the time to work on my house, up my re-sale game, clear out clutter and sell off stuff I don't need, and if I get serious I'll find some small paid gigs too.

Mar: 44,139.97
Apr: 44,650.91
May: 48,082.98 (Awesome month for the networth despite getting to pay rent on two places and waiting on the return of one security deposit. Thank you Mr. Market!)

Just graduated from the race to 10k thread.

I wont even hazard a guess as to when I'll get through this one, but I'll keep track of finances and hope for the best.

I'm 25, from Manchester, UK (obviously).  Work in the software industry, mainly account management and client relations.  I match bets in my spare time to generate some extra money.  I have a small workplace pension and need to start investing properly.  I don't include the equity in my house.  My N/W is calculated as follows:

Cash balance (including Emergency Fund) + Investments + Matched betting balance - Credit card debt.

November 2018 - £10,691.37

My stretch goal is to hit £25k by the end of November 2019.  Wish me luck! :)

Things are quite different for non-US members due to pension etc but I agree, aim high and kick ass!

Thank you! DH got a bonus we put toward our Student Loan so that gave us a generous raise in Net Worth for the month when combined with our normal savings :)

Hello all,

I join you here with a -47560. November 23rd. It is perhaps a bad month to start a dramatic lifestyle change with Christmas around the corner but any gain on this is a win I think. With a $90,000.00 household income I hoped to be positive in the next two years but with what I’ve been reading, with major changes I should be able to get that down to a year.
More discussion on another thread =)

Welcome,

One piece of advice I had read elsewhere that really stuck with me is the Mustachian variety of keeping up with the Joneses. Some people will do a crap job when saving $10k per month while others should feel great about putting away $300. Everyone has their own pace and circumstances, we can probably learn from all of the other folks on these forums but don't try to set targets based on another person's journey or circumstances.

Make a solid, attainable plan and go after it month over month.

Oh and about December being the worst month to get started, you could also look at it as a big impact opportunity because if you can stick to a plan during Christmas time then most of the other months should be way easier. Use that thought as a way to boost your confidence in the plan!

Oct2018: $23,658

Nov2018: $23,948. (+$290)
Posting a little early for me, but unless we have some drastic market swings in the next 2 days, it shouldn't change.  Its been a volatile month, 3 days ago the monthly change was negative $37.  I have more than tripled my retirement savings year over year.

Jan 2018 €16.000
Feb 2018 €17.050 (+1050)
Mar 2018 €17.300 (+250)
Apr 2018 €18.600 (+1300)
May 2018 €21.200 (+2600)
June 2018 €23.300 (+2100)
July 2018 €24.400 (+1100)
Aug 2018 €25.700 (+1300)
Sept 2018 €26.100 (+400)
Oct 2018 €26.100 (+0)
Nov 2018 €29.100 (+3000!!)

Massive gain thanks to the market recovering a bit (+500 or so?), and a paycheck that's €2000 higher than normal (raise + '13th month'). I have a little business money coming in soon as well so getting reaaaally close to that €30k.
