I had a goal of $90k in the 401k by the end of 2017, I made it!!  There should be a pretty decent dividends increase in Dec, not sure if I will be able to hit $95k in the 401k alone before the end of the year but it seems pretty likely in the combination of the 401k and IRA I might even hit $95k in the 401k alone before the end of year.  It would be really cool to graduate from this before baby #2 comes in March!

I was reading some of the other "Race from" threads and decided that although I don't count true NW it would be nice to look back and see it so I figured I would add it!  I am staying in this thread because the "Invested Total" is the column that I am tracking.

Looks like the new company started the transfer of our 401K on 12/30 so all that money is currently not playing in the market which is disappointing.  I am tempted to take what is in savings (~$3000) for DH's potential self employment taxes and put it into his IRA as I don't think we should owe anything above what has been paid in for 2017.  This would move us on to the next race, I don't currently count that savings as it has a clearly defined purpose, or I could do the practical thing and wait to make sure we don't have any tax liability 1st.  Waiting is not an area that I excel at.

@Trifele @MSquared

Thank you both, it sure makes me look back at all the money I wasted back in the day... but one foot forward and all that.

I'm incredibly happy I bought in right before my wage doubled, been pretty funny watching my friends / family know I make so much more while cutting out 50% of my frivolous spending at the same time. Savings!!

Welcome Serendip!  No worries if you end up at a slow pace.  It took me forever and a day to get to $100k; I was way slower than all you youngsters. The important thing is that you are on the path.  You can do it!

I’m in - I love this thread. We hit $50k last week and hope to double that by year end. Then I guess you will kick me out and I’ll have to go find a bigger sandbox to play in.

Much of it is denominated in GBP so our net worth in USD will depend on whether May or Trump more adeptly shits the bed in 2018. Early money on May but there’s a lot of year left...

I’m sure we will have both. It’s just that the relative volume of shit pushes the exchange rate around. Trump won last year (of course) and the appreciation in the pound meant my UK pension was worth 15% more USD at peak than trough.

Love these threads. I'm tracking net worth in the 0-10k thread but I think I'll jump in here and start tracking Savings/Invested assets to 100K. Watching everyone's progress gives me so much motivation!

10/31/17: $7,686
11/30/17: $18,654
12/31/17: $24,407
1/13/18: $28,518

Hoping to make some big changes this year with a positive job transition for DH and maxing contributions to our 401ks and Roth IRAs! Loose projection has us set to hit 100K+ by end of 2019.

Love these threads too!  In a world of complainypants people talking about it being impossible to get ahead, I see page after page after page of people ALL doing just that.

*Stats for Jan 15th, 2018 (not end of month)

The 401k transfer finalized and the 1st contribution was made so half way through with Jan 2018 and we hit $100k in invested total!!! Other good news I accepted a job offer on Friday that includes a 37% raise and an increase in potential bonus % (although I won't that part until 2019).

In the not so good news category the expense fees on the new 401k vs the old 401k are not making me happy.  I wonder what my options will be with the new job although I will not be able to contribute until I have been here for 30 days and that will be very close to when I take maternity leave.  It looks like this number will depend almost solely on the market for the next several months.

student loan payments cleared and my year end bonuses and employer contribution hit my 401k finally.  Sorry, no black magic for huge jumps like that.

First time poster. Reckon I fit in this thread pretty well.

Savings/investments: $30,442

Cc debt (0% apr) - $3,411
Student loans (7.9% apr) - $8,856

Total - $18,175

Currently looking to build up a 3-6 month emergency fund and then kill the remaining debt.

Seems like I goofed up my calculations, but the same principle applies. And I'm still on an upward trend.

Savings/investments: $34,886

Cc debt (total) - $7,699
Student loans (7.9% apr) - $8,827

Total - $18,350

Going to be in such better shape when the debt is gone.

Howdy folks,

I've been reading the blog for a few years, but really want to make things count this year, so I'm jumping into the forums for some accountability. I should have jumped into this thread awhile ago, but might as well start here:

I've been using Personal Capital to track NW since the beginning of 2015, so we should graduate from this thread in the next few months. We've been averaging 40K + NW gains a year since then, but I feel like we could do better since we have high incomes relative to our cost of living. I'm also using a conservative estimate of our home value (total mortgage - outstanding balance), so in theory this number would be higher if using a figure closer to what Zillow states as the 'value' or even the original appraisal value from when we bought five years ago.

I'd love for this to be the year that we squash our outstanding debt (some students loans and car payments), so I'll be posting progress on the student loan payoff in that thread as well.

Zillow values are famously nonsense. You’re better off using your estimate.

Background:
Age: 29
"Switched" Careers at 25.
Started taking personal finances 'seriously' around 27 (aka actually saving money, 401k, etc).
Started taking personal finances seriously around 29
Salary gradually up to 65k, 68k as of End of 2017, 75k at beginning of CY18
Married but don't include house (equity/mortgage) or joint savings in these calculations since she's the boss, it gets messy with house equity/sweat equity ($40k total on a $170k house in May 17), and it will just be cherry on the top.
-Paid off car but not adding value of that in the calculation since its not worth more than a few Gs and requires maintenance
-4.5 years left of student loan payments I'm aggressively paying off/refinanced in January '17
-15 year mortgage in May '17
-Not including 529 accounts-Only a few hundred now, but it will be going to Godchildren/my future children so not my money in my eyes.

January 2016-

Hoping to increase 401k/IRA when the Sloans are paid off and hopefully some more salary. Realistic goal is to retire by 55 unless I really climb the corporate ladder.

I'm crashing two threads and this will be my joint account. I like my personal one since it's easier to motivate myself then my wife, but it still nice seeing the change in combined NW/Investments which is what matters.

I was reading some of the other "Race from" threads and decided that although I don't count true NW it would be nice to look back and see it so I figured I would add it!  I am staying in this thread because the "Invested Total" is the column that I am tracking.

Code: [Select]
401K        IRA Invested Total Home Value Rental Value Debt         Total NW
Dec-13 $43,660 $0         $43,660 $120,000 $120,000 $232,000 $51,660
Dec-14 $52,943 $0         $52,943 $125,000 $125,000 $227,000 $75,943
Dec-15 $55,622 $0         $55,622 $130,000 $130,000 $227,000 $88,622
Dec-16 $68,870 $700 $69,570 $200,000 $130,000 $281,000 $118,570
Dec-17 $96,294 $1,167 $97,461 $240,000 $135,000 $317,727 $154,724
Jan-18 $101,379 $1,212 $102,591 $240,000 $135,000 $316,332 $161,258

I am calling JAN 2018 as the official graduation from this race!!

New job started on Monday, new race officially starts today!

Jul 17$6.2k
Aug 17$6.8k
Sept 17$8.2k
Oct 17$9.0k
Nov 17$9.9k
Dec 17$11.1k

Jan 18: $12.1k

I ended up shy of the 35% savings rate I'm shooting for this year - 29% is a little disappointing. A full quarter of my $1000 gain was in investment growth (doesn't count as savings). On the other hand, I had to pay for vehicle registration and smog testing, both expenses I won't have to contend with the rest of the year.

Back at it again.  Year end bonus, gifts, stock market gains, and substantial increases in home value really helped move the needle forward. But home expenses are looming on the horizon.

2/1/2017   - ($6,832)
3/1/2017   -   $66
4/1/2017   - $ 6,298
5/1/2017   - $12,179
6/1/2017   - $17,418
7/1/2017   - $21,303
8/1/2017   - $28,136
9/1/2017   - $29,233
10/1/2017 - $35,076
11/1/2017 - $40,626
12/1/2017 - $44,564 NW - $20,282 LNW
1/1/2018   - $63,155 NW - $33,603 LNW
2/1/2018   - $86,749 NW - $48,144 LNW

It seems kind of insane to realize that just last year I had negative net worth (and that was right after paying off $10k in cc debt). Thanks to this forum and MMM, I'm a true believer.

Question: How does everyone track home values? Both zillow and redfin show substantial gains in the home value in the few short months since I've bought it.  The neighborhood is very much "up and coming" with lots of new development going in which may account for the increases, but it almost "too good to be true" (cue the bubble).  I got a good deal on purchase price, but I'm not sure its worth "that" much more than what I paid.

Do people just use the purchase price? Do you discount the zillow/redfin model? Any ideas?  Mint obviously tracks the zillow model, but I've always thought that redfin was a little more accurate.

Hello everyone! It is my first time posting in this thread, I just made by way over from the race to $10k thread which I just surpassed.

Here is a basic breakdown of the numbers as of the end of the day today:

Total Cash/Cash Equivalents: $31,642
Total Liabilities: $20,131

Net Worth: $11,511

Virtually all of my liabilities are student loans. I also have some minor balances on my credit cards, which I pay off monthly. I've been aggressively attacking the student loans (see my participation in the student loan challenge if curious) and have made steady progress.

As for asset composition,  20% are in checking accounts, 13% is in my HSA and 67% is in my 401k.

I'm looking forward to following everyone's progress. Good luck to us all!

Missed a month, but my net worth as of Nov 30th is $18,617.

As the year comes to a close, my next worth is up to $23,350.

Just updated my spreadsheet to record my paycheck. January ends with my networth up to $27,921.

I am in! The goal is to get to 100k net worth by the end of 2018. Currently at ~21k. I have been pretty good at my goals so far. Starting out after college in Dec. 2013, I believe I had about a negative net worth of 65k. My first financial goal was to get a net worth of zero by the time I received my tax refund this year and I hit it at the end of January. My second goal was to have my private student loan (6.6%) paid off by the end of July. I made it at the end of June. Next I am hoping to have the car paid off by the end of the year. Currently have a 10k balance left on that loan.

My soft goal for the end of 2017 is 35k in net worth, only because I think I'll need it to be close to that to meet the 100k goal at the end of 2018. I have not done any hard calcs at this point, but in the mean time, I should be getting annual raises of approx. 5k beginning 11/1 for 2017 and 2018. I will also be maxing out my 401k in 2018 and hopefully the ROTH IRA as well.

So I am currently at ~30,900 net worth. I've been averaging about a 2k increase per month and I've got an extra paycheck coming in for December as there will be 3 pay periods. I should be between 37-38k net worth by the end of the year. I've got a raise coming effective 11/1, but I have not been communicated the amount yet.

I've cut almost 3k in annual expenses in the past few months. Moved to a nicer, more convenient, and cheaper apartment (farther away from city center, which I don't need anymore) that will save me $87 a month. In moving there and an acquisition by my firm, I will be driving approximately 10 miles round trip a day rather than 60. Rough estimates have that at about $100 a month in gas savings. My firm is also adding a HDHP plan, which I do not know the exact details yet, but I'm guessing this will be about 1/2 the cost of the low deductible plan (estimated savings of 50/month).

I have not ran the hard numbers yet as exact figures aren't determined, but my goal of 100k NW by the end of 2018 is going to come really close. I'd guess I'm looking at being more towards 10-15k short without any gains/raise coming next year/potential promotion. Here is a question for my fellow cohorts - I have about a 5k vested pension at my previous employer. I'm going to check to see if there is any way I can roll that over into a 401k/IRA this coming week. Either way, would you include that in your net worth calc? I'm younger so pensions are not a familiar topic for me. I've read being vested means that its guaranteed to me no matter what, but I've heard of plenty of people losing their pensions (albeit not knowing specific circumstances).

Now that year end is basically here I took some time to run my numbers.

Current NW: 46,289.93
2018:
Student loan payments decreasing principal: 1,933.56
ROTH IRA Contribution on 1/1 (with 7% return estimated: 5,885
401k Contributions (with estimated DCA of 3.5% return): 19,147.50
Deferred 2017 401k employer match: 458
401k employer match (with estimated DCA of 3.5% return): 2,000
2017 tax refund estimate (with 1% Ally interest): 2,020
Addition to savings (for house downpayment):18,379.42
Estimated previous employer retirement plan increase: 500
Estimated increase in paychecks due to lower w/h from tax reform: 1,500.
Estimated increase to 2017 YE 401k balance (assuming 7%): 1273.09
Estimated increase to 2017 YE Roth balance (assuming 7%): 424.41

12/31 2018 NW estimate: $99,780.91. So it's going to be VERY close. There will certainly be some unexpected costs that creep up such as smaller medical/dental costs, registrations, licenses, car maintenance/repairs, etc. Getting there is going to heavily count on the stock market getting at least average returns. I'm working hard towards a promotion that would go into effect 11/1/18, which would hopefully net me about another 1k before 2018 YE. I also have multiple ways to get bonuses at work, albeit normally in smaller increments. I believe I already have close to 1k gross coming my way. Let's get it!
One month into 2018 and the new NW is 51,349 (with some help from the market) with an end of year projection now of $101,092. Woo hoo! I would still like to come up with another few thousand to play it safe as there will certainly be expenses come up that I don't really budget for such as medical/dental, car maintenance, registration renewals, etc.

November 2017 - $10,267
December 2017 - $11,208

January 2018 - $10,713

Spendy month in January, so I went backwards a bit.  I'll go backwards yet again in February (getting an implant for my new tooth - $2150 dental bill!), but after that I should be headed in the right direction.
