Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501
December 2022: EUR 50,344

January 2023: EUR 52,461
February 2023: EUR 50,213
March 2023: EUR 51,197
April 2023: EUR 48,521

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

Downwards month because we used part of our liquid funds to do an early repayment on our mortgage (which is good for our net worth and good for getting the monthly fixed expenses down, so more possibilities to save). And we went to travel for a week, which also got the liquid funds down a little. But we made loads of good memories as a family, which is way more valuable. Next month will be holiday pay and (hopefully) tax return. However, the tax return will be immediately redirected to our mortgage, so this will not be in this challenge.

@Serendip CONGRATS on passing this milestone. You did it!!!!

When you say early repayment on your mortgage do you mean the entire mortgage is now paid off? Otherwise how would it affect your monthly fixed expenses. I ask because it barely affected your numbers.

It is a partial repayment. We have two mortgages and are working on repaying 1 as soon as possible. Original repayment date of this one was in 2033, but currently it stands at 2031 and we're hoping to get rid of this part in 2027. Which means that after 2027, the monthly free cashflow available for investing will increase significantly. In theory, we can already repay this mortgage in full from our savings and investments, but then we have no emergency fund left, which does not feel right. But any windfalls go to this mortgage to shorten the repayment period (and slightly lower the monthly expenses because of less interest).
The other mortgage will probably not be repaid, since the interest rate is fixed till 2040 at 2.59% and our house value is >3 times the mortgage value.

Seems like a good balance of invest/save vs debt repayment to me! Is the interest rate on the first low enough to instead invest until you have enough to pay off the first one and then do it all at once? Keep the extra liquidity that way. Maybe make money in the process with potential investment gains speeding up the process. Depends on a lot of factors which i'm sure you've thought about, just curious!

Repayment of mortgage #1 is a priority for us, since this will free monthly cashflow, which we will need when our teens will start their college years. Fortunately, education in the Netherlands is affordable, but it is nice to help them out on their other expenses. So we're not looking into the interest rate, since this is not part of our discussion on this. Just to free an extra 500-600 euro every month (EVERY MONTH!!!!) sounds tempting enough for us.
For the 2nd mortgage, we will build up a stash and we can choose whether we repay or not (it is a mortgage that is only repayable upon sale of the house / 2043 (whichever comes first), so enough time to build up the stash and let inflation eat away part of the mortgage!). For us, the key argument is flexibility and not being bound to fixed monthly repayments to the bank, that is why we want to kill the fixed monthly payment as soon as possible!

Well after this month's monthly income, I am at 94K net worth; my net worth increases about $2k per month on average, assuming no major expenses.

However, I was looking up the price of my home and it has increased another $10,000.  I was counting my home as $95k of the net worth, back when Zillow said it was worth $130k -- since I'd have to deduct repair costs, realtor fees and closing costs if I ever sold (I was being liberal with the potential selling expenses); also I thought home prices would come down because they went up so abruptly the past couple years.

But now Zillow says my home is worth near 150K.  So I decided to add another $10k to my net worth, allowing $105k for the home instead of $95k.

So I have achieved my goal of $100k net worth as my net worth is at $104k.   I guess it's time to move onto the race to $500k, which will take a very long time -- probably 10 years at least.

Nice job staying steady in this race and finishing! I just wanted to reach out and let you know there is a race for 100k to 250k if you are interested in joining, makes the end goal seem much more within reach, in comparison to 500k!

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501
December 2022: EUR 50,344

January 2023: EUR 52,461
February 2023: EUR 50,213
March 2023: EUR 51,197
April 2023: EUR 48,521
May 2023: EUR 49,658

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

Limited savings, since we put a large part of our holiday pay into a pre-tax pension fund (not in this overview). The tax refund was put directly into our mortgage. So after all these extras, we will go into the "quiet" months till (hopefully) bonus will hit in December......

Markets were behaving well. I wrote off 850 € that I loaned to a (former) friend and will most likely not be seeing back. I went into it ready to give up that money to help him and now it's actually become an expensive lesson not to mix friendship and money. He was supposed to start small monthly payments of 50 € in January and event hat didn't materialize with lots of discussions and promises not beeing kept.

Still cause for celebration bc it's a new all-time high since April 2022.

racking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501

April 2023: EUR 48,521
May 2023: EUR 49,658
June 2023: EUR 49,629

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

Had a few large expenses this month (new contacts, new glasses...... oh the joy of having bad eyesight......), but overal the downward turn was limited thanks to the market.
Still hoping for my strech goal of 60K this year, but with DS probably having to start the teeth-braces project, I feel we're probably not getting there.

Hey everyone! So excited to make it to this thread finally. Here are my numbers as of this morning.

3/4/2022: $12,100 cash + $1,034 investments - $0 debt = $13,134 NW

7/12/2022: $14,300 cash + $2,450 investments - $0 debt = $16,750 NW

Finally graduated college at the ripe old age of 27 and landed a good job, so I'm looking forward to watching my stache grow at a faster rate!

I had hoped to be closer to $20K in net worth this time of year, but I spent a dumb amount of money furnishing my new apartment with brand new stuff.

I was walking through Goodwill yesterday and realized I would've been just as happy with the used furniture, dishes and appliances they were selling. I still have a lot to learn but I've been learning a lot by devouring every episode of the Mad Fientist podcast. Really interested in maxing my 401k and IRA somehow.

11/5/2022: $18,312 cash + $4,002 401k + $4,560 IRA = $26,874 NW

7/26/2023: $23,106 cash + $14,014 401k + $14,654 IRA + $35 brokerage - $0 debt = $51,809 NW

$100k here I come! But more importantly, happy fulfilled life here I come. Really proud that I'm obsessing over this number much less now.

Despite a 3 week holiday (not too spendy, but still a decent amount was taken from savings), the total is not too bad (thanks to markets). As from now, upwards we go!!!!

You are getting so close to the finish line, @LittleWanderer I'm cheering for you!

Thank you!!!  Unless the market keeps going crazy, I suspect I'll still be here for a bit.  I've been here since 2017.  Slow and steady...

01/09/2023:  €53,363.61 (house purchase)

I bought a house (just me, all on my lonesome!) and got the keys in July. I am very proud. The move was very succesfull and I am settling in. Its been amazing to have more space and better facilities. The big increase in my numbers is mostly to do to the fact that my parents gave me a substantial gift (or early inheritance) for the purpose of the purchase. I can no longer say its all on my own merit, but I aint looking gift horses in the mouth. I will be very pleased when this number increases until I have at least as much of my own money, as their gift. So that is the goal for the next months. But I also have plans for the house. Finding the balance between the future and improving the house for comfort is a delicate struggle. But a very blessed one to have.

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501
December 2022: EUR 50,344

January 2023: EUR 52,461
February 2023: EUR 50,213
March 2023: EUR 51,197
April 2023: EUR 48,521

June 2023: EUR 49,629
July 2023: EUR 49,201
August 2023: EUR 49,145

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

Had a little backdrop because of an unexpected bill that came in this month. We're so glad that we can just cover these things from our EF and we do not have to think twice about paying it!
Hopefully September will be a little better......

@Treedream congrats on your new home! Being a homeowner in the Netherlands is really the best way of getting ahead in the game!

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

Some downwards movement due to markets and teens starting school again, so all school bills come in for school camps, supplies and other activities. Teen #2 is having growth spurts, so new jeans, new sweaters and new shirts had to be bought..... Hopefully the supply he has now will get him through winter.
Teen #1 does not grow anymore, so she doesn't require a major update in clothing. Just the odd shirt or skirt.

EF has decreased a lot due to these items, so hopefully it will grow again this month. Child support from the government will come in today, so that is always a nice to have amount and will be directed immediately to the EF!

The goal seems a big challenge this year. Markets were not helping this month, despite the regular contributions. Still hoping that I'm buying shares at a discount...... Big plans in the making for 2024, which will not get us to our EUR 100K goal, but will be quite an experience for the teens (3-4 weeks trip to China!!!!).

I think I swapped some things around between E-fund and Sinking funds (SF not included here) so the math might not add up all together. This includes equity in the house and savings. I haven't got much in investments at the moment, so when we get to there, I'll split it out. For now I need to increase my emergency funds first. I am making good progress, despite going on a fabulous holiday and setting aside money for house improvements. About € 50,500 of this is house equity. Working hard on evening this out quickly.

October 2023 - $82,040

November 2023 - $90,530

Wow!  My first time in the 90s.  (Well, I enjoyed them as a decade too.)  I have no doubt I'll go back down as the market fluctuates, but I'm going to take the win for now.  :)  Hoping to graduate sometime next year!!

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501
December 2022: EUR 50,344

January 2023: EUR 52,461
February 2023: EUR 50,213
March 2023: EUR 51,197
April 2023: EUR 48,521
May 2023: EUR 49,658
June 2023: EUR 49,629
July 2023: EUR 49,201
August 2023: EUR 49,145
September 2023: EUR 48,847
October 2023: EUR 48,950
November 2023: EUR 43,006

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

Definitely not reaching my 2023 goal, but with a good reason: we already bought the plane tickets for our China trip next year!!!!! We also did prepay some on our hotels etc, so we had a good reason for a decrease. We saved/ budgetted for this trip and so far, it's still looking like we will stay within budget!

Its been very steady going the last couple of months. November was really good, as I finally managed to cook more real food at home, keeping the groceries down. I got a few things for the house, like an induction hob, but those expenses are spread out over the year because I put monthly amounts in sinking funds which I don't count here. I basically consider the sinking fund pots already spend, so I feel free to use them for their intended purpose.

Hoping to end the year close to 59K.

Whoa look at you @LittleWanderer!  I remember you from the "Race to 10k" thread.  And now you’re almost to 100k!!!

Great job everyone -- lots of steady progress, and a nice little market upswing for New Years.  Getting to 100k can be a tough slog, where it feels like progress is slow and market swings are big.  But you've got this y'all.  Go go go!

12/30/2023: $30,342 cash + $110 brokerage + $23,948 401k + $15,409 IRA  - $0 debt = $69,809 NW Happy new year!
