Project suggestions
« on: September 04, 2016, 09:53:48 AM »
We recently quit our jobs and moved cross country to be closer to my family as DS is starting kindergarten  we are currently living with my parents while we hunt for jobs and try to get settled.

I need a project or challenge of some sort while we deal with this limbo period of waiting for the next phase to start and look to buy our next house.

Any suggestions? Both DH and I are getting depressed just waiting.

I'll be home with my 2.5 year old unless I find a job. I'm not hunting as hard as DH. We've been here 6 weeks and for the salary level he wants it could mean looking for up to a year.

What would be your challenge for a new to you city? I grew up here but never really knew it before I left. I'm not going to bother listing all of our hobbies as I'm more interested in random suggestions across the board to give us some inspiration. Need to get out of this funk.

Can you do something nice for your folks...like decluttering, or painting, or landscaping or such?

OMG, I'm in such a similar position (except for the children) - please be my friend! ;)
Moved back to the childhood city 5 weeks ago. My partner has a job starting in 1 week but I don't. I've been working on starting a business, but it's been slow going. Mostly because we've both been in vacation mode and I don't have a lot of my own space or time or furniture/stuff.
Suggestions:
- take a course - either something totally fun and frivolous or something that may increase your employability. For me these are video game design, and accounting. Or something through the city or community association if you want a class with people around.
- start a business
- look at Meetup.com for random meetups in your city
- try a new activity/sport - my favourites are martial arts and roller derby. I started derby in May and it really helped my adjustment to my previous new city. I start again in the new city next week. Most places have the season start for newbies right around now.
- go to each park and neighbourhood just to walk around
- go the library and get whatever random book/magazine seems interesting
- use kijiji to look for random events
- look for one-of or short term volunteer opportunities
- try new recipes

I haven't been taking my own advice very well. I'd love to hear suggestions from others. And it makes me feel better talking to another person in a similar limbo. We move to a furnished apartment in a week, and then again into the permanent house in about 11 weeks. So it'll be a while before I can get properly settled.

Ha ha. I kind of wondered if the internet would turn up that kind of coincidence. We could meet up sometime if you are interested.
Here is the derby intro thing I'm going to on Tuesday, if you have any interest - just an info session:

Not sure roller derby is my thing, but looks like fun!

I'm thinking I should plan to train for a triathlon in the spring or something. I've always wanted to do one. Hopefully I'll be able to get a house by then so I can get my bike out of storage.

I've been in similar spots in life.  I tend to pick something I've always wanted to make or do, and just learn something new.  A few ideas (most from my past):

-Beer or wine making
-Photography
-Rock climbing
-Hand tool woodworking (warning: not cheap)
-Vegetable gardening
-Focus on excelling at a certain type of cooking (bbq, pizza, thai food, etc.)
