Today is 8 Dec 2019

Update on my daughter (20 years old)'s journey :

  Passive income (rolling annual)

    March 2019 : 1198
    May 2019    : 1369
    June 2019    : 1769
    July 2019     :  2061
    August 2019  : 2197
    Sept 2019 :     2492
    Oct 2019:        2568
    Nov 2019 :      2700 (5% increase over Oct)
    Dec 2019:       2716

Net worth is now $39067 which equates to a 6.9% return

Footnote: no new investments this month as DD is conserving cash because of her upcoming trip to Europe ...she has about $6679 in Cash which she can deploy but she is keeping her powder dry atm

That targetted $3000 annual passive income is turning out to be pretty elusive:(

Whoops I jumped the gun a little and forgot to add in my last paycheck contribution before posting. My total is only $9,872.27. Dividends are still the same but market gains are only $7,089.64.

Happy New Years everybody. Cheers to another solid year of financial gains. On the passive income front, December was an average month. Missed my year end goal of 5k, but managed to move a good portion of my investments into index funds.

My goal for 2020 is to reach 6k in passive income. The past 2 years I have gained about 1k each, so here’s to hoping I will start to see some compounding help out in 2020.

2019Q2: $5,770
2019Q3: $5,839

Today is 29 Jan  2020

Update on my daughter (20 years old)'s journey :

  Passive income (rolling annual)

    March 2019 : 1198
    May 2019    : 1369
    June 2019    : 1769
    July 2019     :  2061
    August 2019  : 2197
    Sept 2019 :     2492
    Oct 2019:        2568
    Nov 2019 :      2700
    Dec 2019:       2716
Jan 2020:        2809 (3.4% increase over Dec due mainly to investments in Vanguard Growth Fund)

Net worth is now $50074 which equates to a 5.6% return...

Footnote: The % return has dropped from previous mth due to sitting on nearly $8000 of cash (due to Christmas gifts and extra work) waiting to be deployed once the Coronavirus impact becomes a little clearer...

Still waiting to hit that target of 3K passive income:(...hopefully by 30 June 2020...

I just found this thread and I'm really excited about it. Every month I look forward to posting updates in the Race from 10k to 100k thread, and this seems like it will be really fun to track as well.

Still a long way to go to reach financial independence, or even just to graduate from this thread. $1,200/year is $100/month though, and that's not nothing!

Net worth is now $55916  which equates to a 5.4% return...

Covid has thrown a dampener on her savings rate :(

Footnote: so with a huff and a puff, DD just managed to scrape through the 3K mark ; mainly due to continued investing in the Vanguard Managed Fund (Diversified Growth).

Still sitting on a cash pile of about 11K which will be dripped in monthly ... this will help her towards her next soft goal of 3500 by June 2021.

While 2020 has been a rollercoaster ride, my passive income has steadily grown. Before the pandemic I was sitting on a large cash balance, which I finally invested in March for a nice discount.
Beside that, I recently doubled my EESP contributions, so expect to see nice increases for the remainder of the year.

1 June 2019--31 May 2020: total passive income (dividends, interest) was $2509.87. This is pretty much the double of the year before.

Passive interest since 1 June 2020 is $294.48. Somehow I don't think this one is gonna double so much what with the 'rona, but we'll see.

Please help me to understand as I have been paying off debt and not even concerned with passive income-I don't think I even know what it is in this context.

So my husband and I each have a 401k which we are contributing to each paycheck- so that goes up, but do I just count how much it goes up OVER the amount I put in?

I also have a small mutual fund account with TIAA, which I'm putting money in- do I just calculate how much I make above and beyond what I put in.

Then I have a small savings account that I'm not adding to right now- so that one's pretty easy.

@rachellynn99 I only count dividends and interest that my investments generate, not market gains/losses.  Your 401k statement probably indicates how much dividends/interest your investments produced per the period - that's the number you want to look at.  Your mutual fund account would also have some way that it tracks this information, though I'm not familiar with TIAA.

Same for me -- I don't track market gains here, just dividends and interest. (If I had royalties or other types of passive income, I'd track that too, but I don't.)

You should be able to see dividends/interest in your transactions history in most accounts.

Yes my mutual funds were pretty easy, I'll have to find out for our retirement accounts. Thank you, this is helpful.

What do people classify as passive income? I have a pension from a prior employer I can start anytime between now at age 46, and would get 12,000 a year, or as late as age 70, and would get about 40k a year. I could also start a SEPP right now at 33k, and that would slowly increase over time. No real estate cash flow or living purely off dividends though for me.

Today is 13 August  2020

Update on my daughter (now 21 years old)'s journey :

  Passive income (rolling annual)

    March 2019 : 1198
    May 2019    : 1369
    June 2019    : 1769
    July 2019     :  2061
    August 2019  : 2197
    Sept 2019 :     2492
    Oct 2019:        2568
    Nov 2019 :      2700
    Dec 2019:       2716
    Jan 2020:        2809
    June 2020 :      3008
    August 2020 :   4200
    Next target : 4500  (by June 2021)

Net worth is now $61479  which equates to a 6.8% return...

August sees a big jump from June ; mainly due to a local bank offering a 3% savings rate to anyone below 25 years old and mum helping to plonk 30K in on her behalf...i know it is "cheating" but i have the excess cash and i know she will repay this to me in time...it is also a good learning point to discuss ...

Footnote: DD still has $12714 in cash from which she is earning pittance interest atm ..she will drip into shares/managed funds ..i foresee a big drop in her earnings for the 2nd half of the year....

1 June 2019--31 May 2020: total passive income (dividends, interest) was $2509.87. This is pretty much the double of the year before.

Passive income since 1 June 2020 is $294.48. Somehow I don't think this one is gonna double so much what with the 'rona, but we'll see.

1 June -- 30 September passive income: $429.28

I'm at $12,750 from side gig businesses for the year and expecting another $6K-$8K from Christmas sales.  This is Gross numbers though, would love it to be $10K Profits for 2020, so time will tell if I hit this goal.

                     Pre-Tax      Post-Tax    Total
Sep '17-'18      $122.36       $191.70      $314.06
2018               $212.39       $218.29      $430.68
2019               $341.85       $302.17      $644.02
2020          $377.11       $389.00        $763.11

Before the pandemic of 2020, I had been getting a decent amount of monthly cash dividends in my cash brokerage account (EF) - which promptly fell to almost $0/month for the year.  Otherwise I think I had a chance of over $575 in post-tax income and $950 overall for the year.  Oh well.  In 2020, I put in $6K to my Roth IRA for 2019, and over the year I put in another $6K for 2020, so I've been squealing at watching those growing dividends.  I need to beef up my post-tax accounts a bit, though.  I'm not pleased with where that passive income is at.  Onward to 2021.

12 month Forward earnings in Investment acct only: $8564.50.

I was getting pretty close to 10K pre-covid until multiple dividend cuts (including a few blue-chip, 'recession-proof' companies that I had only recently invested in to diversify and as a safe harbor.)
I have dividends in other accounts, but this is the one that is funding the 'early' part of my early retirement, so that's what I'm counting.
Canadian banks have had to freeze dividends, so I hope to see a bit of a boost when the govt frees them from present restrictions.

All numbers are trailing twelve months

2016: $2,367
2017: $3,270
2018: $4,967
2019: $6,824
2020: $7,253

2021Q1: $7,233
2121Q2: $12,740.68

I had a much larger distribution than usual this quarter, so I guess I've graduated?  Doesn't quite feel right since it happened so quickly.

Today is 3 July  2021

My 3 children's passive income is :

                                      DS1              DD              DS2
Age                                  24                22               20

Passive income                6565            5801             3358

Rate of return                  5.5%            8.4%            6.7%

Footnote: DS1 is roaring ahead..his passive income is able to sustain him for 1 month FOREVER!   Not a bad performance considering he has just started work a year and a half ago:)...still too cash heavy atm!

DD is still static since the last time...too much online shopping and socialising means slight improvement ..but she is young and should be allowed to enjoy herself before starting work...

DS2 is the dark horse...

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
