one song: one improvement [one week] WEEK 3
« on: August 01, 2018, 11:13:42 PM »
Thread Aug 2 - Aug 8

After one week, we lock the thread and start a new one so people aren't receiving notifications for the rest of their lives.

The idea: You know those tasks that are quick and really improve your day, but you avoid like the plague? This thread supports us to set press play on the song of our choice and move on that task for the duration of the song. Extra Challenge: Whenever we see this thread because someone has bumped it up with a new "go", whoever is on it stops what they're doing, and joins in.

Stuff one might improve, depending on personal circumstances:

*improve minimalism: scan stuff
*improve personal security: shred stuff
*improve environment: put dry dishes away
*improve mood: write a thank you note
*improve body: do pushups
*improve blood sugar: eat some protein
*improve ambience: put the thing back into the storage room
*improve foot happiness: vacuum one room
*improve stress load: wash one unmentionable
*improve floor smoothness: wash one section of floor

I didn't do very well on week 2, but I'll give week 3 a go anyway... :-)  Maybe I can get through scheduling my scary medical things :-S

Oh, so *that's* why we only have the thread for a week!  Clever.

Slicey, that seems like the perfect thing for this thread.

I coasted with my earlier "go".  Laundry is one thing I *don't* dread.  This week I'll work on transcribing a spiral bound notebook into pages for a 3-ring binder.  There are only a few page, so it's do-able.  If that gets done, I'll work on cataloging logins & passwords.

Going crazy, per sorting endless appts and referrals this morning, trying to navigate a washer/dryer "auction", etc.
So, going to one-song my way to:

*eat protein
*write day's stops on paper, cut them up, and resort them for peace

Tiny baby steps... listened to Cirkestra's "Zinavalodya" and found the phone number to call to schedule the MRI and found the address of the place I need to go for lab work (don't need an appointment). Maybe I will do the lab work tomorrow when I wake up since it has to be fasting... would feel good to get that out of the way. I have so many things on my plate right now that I'm dreading, it's feeling overwhelming.

Tonight when I get home I want to put some music on and do some batch cooking, or some cleaning, or figure out some big paperworky stuff. I know I can't get all of it done tonight, but at least one of those will make me feel like I got something worthwhile done.

Pressed play on this to do my final steps to get out the door. First notes already caused me to laugh. I love "circus music."

I love that band... they were local to where I used to live, the bandleader is a former circus clown who retired from being a clown to form a band that played in a circus, then when they quit touring with the circus they decided to keep playing as a regular band because they enjoyed it so much. I keep running into great musicians who used to tour with circuses, there are a few I know here in NYC as well.

Just got home and trying to rehydrate before trying to decide what task to attempt tonight. I was getting a little woozy on the subway platform... I guess listening to a song while drinking a glass of water is aiming a little low ;-)

Sat down and listened to Butler/Bernstein's "Viper's Drag" (whole album) while drinking about 24 oz. of water and letting myself plump back up like a macerating raisin.

Then put on Jason Isbell's "Southeastern"* and tackled the cleaning project I wanted to do. Immediately was reminded that I'd forgotten to pay an important bill, so stopped to do that online. Then finished the cleaning project. Also found and put aside some of the paperwork I need for the paperworky stuff (but didn't work on it). Progress! Productivity! Not outright uselessness!

* You can probably hear me hollering somewhere in this live version... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFBZ3jv91Lg

PTF!

I had no song(s), but this evening I pulled out the old dishwasher and carted it outside, and figured out what needs to happen for the new one to be installed correctly.

Now I'm going to eat a mochi ice cream or two and go to bed!

Put on a few tracks from Jolie Holland's "Wine Dark Sea" and did some prep for the batch cooking I wanted to do this week. Chopped all the veg and sauteed the onions.

So many new Cirkestra fans... :-)

Currently rehydrating again to Lucian Ban's "Harlem Bliss." (Those subway platforms will be the death of me...)

Was planning to finish up the batch cooking when I got home tonight, but some questionable choices were made and I got home at 1AM. :-|  I don't think I have carnitas in me at this point.

Set for life now!

Way to go jooni!  Serendip, that is very motivated and grown-up of you :)  $Slice, not-batch cooking seems wise given that you are already dehydrated.

Listening to the Big Band/Swing station all evening, I didn't realize there was a Big Band version of "Joshua".  Have only heard that in the context of church, so that was fun.  Can't find the artist right now.

Tonight's task was breaking into my old Flickr account.  This was accomplished and now I can verify that I have all those pictures on a local drive.  Got 3 years of pictures to go, so that's for the rest of this thread.

If You Leave - OMD.

This transitioned into an 80s playlist that's so awesome I kept going despite being dizzy with fatigue:

*thoroughly rinsed goopiest supper stuff
*removed burners and holders, washed those and stovetop/controls
*put regular floor stuff away
*new bread into freezer

Had to listen to see if Serendip's song was the one I know done as a cover (it is). That led to a YouTube black hole, at the end of which I found Chris Cornell, acoustic, playing U2's One while singing the lyrics to Metallica's One. Did not get anything done, though!

Ah yes, the youtube rabbit hole--but at least you found CC at the end of it! Soundgarden was my first concert in maybe '94? Thankful I got to see the Temple of the Dog show in Seattle not long ago as well.

Okay--am inspired.
Putting on Jolie Holland (as per @Dollar Slice 's recommendation) for some cleaning.

Nice!!

Feeling really ill all day today (some unknown combo of medication side effects + shark week + anxiety + not sleeping) but I got out of bed to get some info for my friend who wanted to benefit from all the doctor research I just did a few weeks ago (which is good, I had been going to PM them and offer the info because I thought they might need it). Playing this song to get myself feeling well enough to hop in the shower, as long as I'm up.

Playing a couple of spirituals as interpreted by a jazz quintet led by by one of New York's great trumpet players, helping me get through my laundry. It was supposed to help me get through dinner but I could not face eating, so laundry and crackers instead.

Had to break out the big guns for this one. Called to make my appointment for the brain MRI. And can I say that when you are desperately wishing you could procrastinate anxiety-causing medical things, it kind of sucks to live in a city full of awesome hospitals? They had an opening in three days. I was secretly hoping if I delayed it would be a while, and then I could call and delay the next neuro appointment and... etc. But I figured I should just take it and get it over with, even though that seems overwhelmingly soon and also means I have horrible scary tests two days in a row this week. Agh. Get all the misery over with at once...

Called to make my appointment for the brain MRI.

WOW!!!

They had an opening in three days.

Again, WOW!!!!! (I could be waiting months, and need to travel through multiple cities, to have a relatively basic appt.)

I'm really glad that if you have to have all these struggles, you at least can access excellent care quickly and easily :)

You're doing SO GREAT. You prioritizing your health while you have flexibility with time is so awesome. I know it's hard to make those calls and go to those appointments -plenty of anxiety producing material there- but total yes to getting the misery over with at once...and then enjoying the rest of your life in better health!

I'm going to check out your songs now to get my morning started.

I do feel like a jerk for complaining that my medical care is too easy to access, LOL. Talk about first world problems. :-)  My initial neurology appointment - not just a neurologist, but a migraine specialist in a "headache center" focused on difficult chronic cases at a major hospital - was literally available next-day. What planet is this?? Maybe everyone in NYC is on vacation in August...

But, yeah, this is the upside of the USA healthcare system that you don't hear much about.

I didn't have a bad night as such, but I didn't sleep at all, between my terrible habits of late, my meds, my cramps, my everything. :-/ I ended up deciding to get out of bed at 6:30 AM and just go to the hospital to get my fasting blood work done as long as I was up before rush hour traffic hit and hadn't eaten anything in however many hours. It is rare that I can overcome my needle phobia long enough to get myself out the door for this sort of thing, so I just carpe'd the diem and went.

They ended up stabbing me twice in both arms before finally giving up because there just wasn't enough blood in me or something :-/ The blood just stopped coming out. Almost a whole vial short of what they needed after four attempts, and she stopped because I was starting to get a little freaked out (I did really super well overall compared to my lifetime batting average needle phobia performance, though). Anyway. Hopefully it's enough for the tests they ordered.

I dedicate "Besos de Sangre" to my efforts. Because I am nothing if not melodramatic in my song choices. :-)

Last night I came home to a (my) wild mess. I do everything (sleep, work, play, YNAB, etc) on my living room floor, so it gets crazy between tidies. After two very poor nights' sleep and plenty of activity, I was so tired...but my internet wasn't working so I couldn't make the musics happen! I seem to have none downloaded and didn't remember I can plug an external CD drive in. I was quite lost without being able to task to music.

Then the internet returned and the music kicked in and everything got done! Whew!

Last day of this thread, then we lock it and start a new one.
