one song: one improvement [one week] WEEK 2
« on: July 25, 2018, 08:34:46 PM »
Thread July 26 - Aug 1

The idea: Whenever we see this thread, because someone bumps it up with a new "go", whoever is on it stops what they're doing, sets one song to play, for its duration improves one thing, then reports in :)

After one week, we can lock the thread and start a new one so people aren't receiving notifications for the rest of their lives.

Stuff one might improve, depending on personal circumstances:

*improve minimalism: scan stuff
*improve personal security: shred stuff
*improve environment: put dry dishes away
*improve mood: write a thank you note
*improve body: do pushups
*improve blood sugar: eat some protein
*improve ambience: put the thing back into the storage room
*improve foot happiness: vacuum one room
*improve stress load: wash one unmentionable
*improve floor smoothness: wash one section of floor

Going to do it!!!!
230am here!

Mountains of Love [Happy Piano Music Instrumental Collective] - In a fit of angst, so will just stretch and roll :)

Well, that 100% worked!! I just stretched and rolled to one, then another, of that happy collection. Body feels GREAT, spirit entirely lifted, mental state fully calm and optimistic. Very nice!

Still listening to it, and will make myself a nice cup of herbal tea...

Continued on to:

*tidy the teeny bit to do in the kitchen
*hide the grapes from my kid so this time I get some too, lol!
*hide the cast iron frying pan from my kid so I can stop washing and heat-drying it upon nonessential uses
*make a spreadsheet for more effective planning of child's therapy "resources"

Went from feeling so low and stressed to really well and happy!

Yay to music and activities that can cure angst & stress!

To the sounds of Ratt "Round and Round" and also Scorpions "Rock You Like a Hurricane":

*put batteries in battery holder
*invented a solution to hold battery holder shut
*boxed up lantern & batteries and placed in storage closet
*rearranged storage a bit
*took picture of storage from outside, because it's so pretty now that my bike hags on the wall instead of blocking access

Way to go, oneday!! The storage-with-bike looks AWESOME. I love a minimalist, well-organized storage space.

Long and absolutely fabulous day out. Just home now and going to steal oneday's last song to do a tidy of today's bits and bobs, starting...NOW!

Rested for 1 song, then started round two when Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants To Rule the World" started.  All this took 11 songs, ending with Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time."  Not my fave MJ song, but I take what Pandora plays.

*downloaded and installed a new software - will require setup/more work later, but will help with organizing my papers
*fixed a loose thread on my favorite cardigan

Those 2 things took unexpectedly long!  Both will enhance my life in the long run (loose threads vex me). I am calling this good for today.

Just was sitting down with morning coffee when I saw this thread
mellow music selection of Calexico, Iron & Wine

-carried things from lower living room back up to kitchen/entranceway
-put hiking/camping odds & ends from stairs into front storage
-wiped down washroom counter, tidied up
-grabbed laundry and put on a load

now..to enjoy that coffee
Thanks for the prompt @jooniFLORisploo :)

Today is a rare day that my brain was able to do phone calls, appt coordinations, etc, so I've spent the last three hours plowing through those! A miracle.

Now I need to move again, and need help to do so. Can't think, so Mutabor playlist again to get dishes set up and breakfast (at noon!) on the stove, starting...NOW!

Serendip, it's awesome that you are finding a way to feel good while sick!

The Doobie Brothers "Listen to the Music" and Lynard Skynard "That Smell" were enough to work on the sink full of dishes, fill the drying rack and stack the remaining dirty dishes neatly, to wait for when the first round is dry/put away later.

It helps me to do it when I know others are doing it too, whether in the same moment or not.)

I think this is the same for me, thanks for calling that out!

I was feeling a rare and lightly-acute loneliness -likely overtired with unbelievable productivity today, plus 90 minutes walking back and forth on Kid Commutes- when I arrived home and found oneday's last note. I smiled and put on a gentle playlist that started with Little May's Boardwalks. I began tidying and tidying until my house was ridiculously beautiful again. Then I felt happy :)

Woke tired, sad, etc. Remembered how helpful I'm finding it to just do a song, so put on Make Me Down a Pallet On Your Floor (Piers Faccini) and used that to improve life via prevention. As of last night, I'd washed enough dishes in the past week to earn me a month off! Not facing another pile in the next while; just doing my own. Put a sign in the kitchen saying anything (dish, surface) left unwashed = $1 out of my teen's bank account. Then made myself a frothy coffee :)

Good job team! (and great idea with the note @jooniFLORisploo )

I put on @Dollar Slice 's tunes mentioned above, and moved some things back to where they belong.

Then since I'm still feeling sick-o: prioritized self-care,  took a long shower, moisturized, etc.
Feeling much more human :)

Woke up feeling unwell today (and I wish I didn't have so very many ideas about why I could be feeling unwell... virus? new meds? terrible sleep habits? rain-picnic food poisoning? ate too much perfectly-ripe cantaloupe before bed? about to have a migraine? ugh). Dragged myself out of bed to cook a 3PM breakfast with this one... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGamBvDDdl4

If only I had a way to play music in the shower I could probably accomplish that next... ;-)

Humming Michael Jackson's Thriller to myself, I washed another drying-rack full of dishes.

Then I realized I could listen to other music (I tend to hum only a few bars over & over)...Pandora played Masterplan "Dark from the Dying" and started Stevie Ray Vaughn "Life Without You" while I made lunch & now I'm nomming to SRV, one of my faves :)

Thanks Joni, can always count on you for new challenge ideas! You encouraged me to take on my complete mess of a balcony. Last weekend, my SIL and I turned into super badass versions of ourselves and we took down the coal shed on my balcony (I live in an apartment built in 1935... yes, the balcony has a coal shed, but the apartment has been updated years ago). We reused the wood to build planters for flowers and herbs.

Anyway, the leftover wood and old, rusty nails still littered my balcony. I put on AC/DC's Shoot to thrill and went to town! It took 4 songs to collect all the wood and nails and put them into boxes. I'll take the boxes to the recycling center on Wednesday, thankfully that's just a grab&go now.

Isn't it weird how motivation works? I was not even cajoled myself into doing something for 1 song. Then the second song starts and you think 'well... I might as well keep going" and by the third I was in the flow. Balcony looks much better now!

I do laundry every two weeks, a little ways from my home.
I'm at the end of the acceptable window of that. It's today or bust!
I feel very overwhelmed at the thought of doing it.

So I'm going to break down the steps and do one step, to one song, at a time, with a break in between.

If any one would like to assign me a song for any of steps 1-9, please do!

Step 1a: Wash bathroom Song: Mony Mony [Idol]

Step 1: Gather all laundry (hamper + kitchen towels, kid's night stuff, thrift stuff, bathroom stuff); place near door.

Step 2: Load all into cart, add soap bottle, coins, laundry room key.

Step 3: Change into something that doesn't need washing. Add jammies to load.

Step 4: Leave note for kid and head out.

Step 5: Wash machines, set up loads, home, set timer.

Step 6: Return to move to dryer.

Step 7: Fold all, clean up laundry space, return home.

Step 8: Set out Kid's pile for his carrying and sorting; put mine away.

Step 9: Put laundry supplies away.

Thanks, mspym and oneday.

Steps 1a-9 are complete, but the process went haywire at Step 5. A new user leaves the machines messy inside and out (hence "wash machines") but after I started cleaning them, I gave up. I took everything to another laundromat, which was also messy and cost a shitload more, and decided to buy machines. So, by next time, laundry should be weirdly simply and no longer a 10-song process.

I'm going to check out your songs for my subsequent challenges :)   None today, though.

ahh.. @jooniFLORisploo --great work! The distance-laundry thing is indeed a challenge, it's one thing I really do value having at home.

We are having a heat wave and all I want to do is swim and eat watermelon.  But guests are coming tomorrow, so I put on Buena Vista Social Club, vaccuumed the house, quick wipe down of mirrors..enough.
Now to swim and cool down (again)

haypug16, I love that song!

I was already standing when a new song came on, so thought...better do this now!  The Divine Wings of Tragedy by Symphony X, which it turns out is almost 21 minutes long!  Only needed 11 minutes to wash all but one dish (drainer is full).

Good going, jooni!  All that when you were tired.

Depeche Mode "Enjoy the Silence" is playing as I am realizing that moving from one password manager to another is not a 1-song activity!  I don't even remember what song was playing when I started.  OK.  Time to drag out the real keyboard and mouse to get this job done!

I'm on hold so can't do this one right now, but need to write it here so I do it. I've been trying for 24 months. I want -today and monthly going forward- to check the air pressure in my tires to optimize fuel use. I bought the little tool. I am always scared of doing it so I don't. I will make this is a one song action today.

ETA: Now off hold. Going to do it right now. Am shaking from head to toe with rare anxiety -so weird!! I'll go with The Cure Just Like Heaven.

I did it! I think something is terribly awry, like I don't know how to check it (very likely), I don't know which number on the tire to read (yes), or the tires are a mess (maybe). This is why I have anxiety at the thought of this job.

So, later I will do one song to contact a car person and ask them to teach me how to check and how to adjust air levels.

haypug16 and Serendip, we have overlapping tastes in music, cool!

To Elvis's Burning Love, then Stevie Ray Vaughn Scuttle Buttin', I did the dishes.  Finished off that last one from the weekend and ALL of today's :)

jooni, sometimes the tire pressure number you want is not on the tire but inside the driver's side front door.  At least it is in many cars in the US.  This is different than bicycles.  With the right guidance and information, you can do this, yes you can!
