One month at a Goal Time- Goals for February!
« on: January 26, 2018, 07:32:51 AM »
With only 5 days left in January its time to start thinking about what you want your goals to be for February be it just one or many! Perhaps for those that participated in January and quite didnt accomplish those goals can try again in February as well. So over the weekend or as you find the time think about it and post as you wish. I will post mine as soon as I get them all in order. Good luck everyone on finishing your January goals and setting your February goals!

Yay! Thanks for posting this. :-) I was hoping you'd create a February one as well.

Financial:
-Spend $200 or less on groceries (have a gift card for the rest)
-Keep dining out to $150 (that's with two birthdays)
-Pay for plans on house remodel, so we can get a finalized budget & timeline, and make prioritizations
-Come up with one way to reduce what we need/spend on an ongoing basis
-Assuming one car is back from the shop, sell our sedan (carryover from Jan, as car isn't back from shop)
-If we sell the sedan, call around for new car insurance. (ditto above)

Family:

-Have one family evening together: cooking dinner, board games, etc
-Have a date night with my husband
-Continue financial help (knowledge, not money) with sister & friend
-Determine timing & budget for adults only vacation

Fitness/health:
-Complete another full round of 21 Day Fix
-Eat 5.5 servings a day of fruit & veggies
-Lose 3 pounds
-Run at least 6 times

Work:
-Work from home 3 days
-Take two classes that I need

Personal/creative:
-Make one new recipe
-Spend time with a friend
-Volunteer at least 1x
-Write for at least 4 hours on personal stuff

Awesome, thank you for starting one for February!

1. Finish maxing out 2018 Roth IRAs for DH and me - this will be close but with an expectant tax refund I think it can be done!
2. Keep food spending under $750. I'm tracking grocery spending as a whole for 2018 in another thread but with a shorter month, I'm hoping to shave a bit off from my current monthly goal of less than $850
3. Stick to weekly meal plan and grocery shopping for entire month
4. Learn to make a new recipe for large batch freezer meals

Due to travels, I know this month is going to be wacky, so I think the following is doable.  Time to focus.
1) do something to learn Portuguese at least 15 days during the month
2) create meal plan
3) create kid activity plan
4) stretching exercises at least 20 days
5) Lose 2 pounds
6) do the 10 ideas exercise at least 15 days during the month
7) invitations/social events: 2 per week
8) yard work at rental properties
9) sort through/empty 1st part of our storage from hell
10) get detail work painted on rental house

This monthly approach to goals is working for me so far!  I have a few goals from January being pushed to a February but I’m still excited at what I’ve axcomplished so far.  February goals:

Ongoing:
-CONTINUE walking to work
-CONTINUE no bottled water
-CONTINUE eating all weekday meals at home (usually go out to dinner once per week)
-CONTINUE using FitBit (not necessarily every day but most days.  Don’t want to be obsessive about it)
-ESTABLISH daily workout habit - already started this by joining a local yoga studio to get me back in the habit of working out
-ESTABLISH earlier bedtime to support workout habit (in bed at 9, up at 5:30)
-Leave Nest thermostat on “Eco” setting all month (already broke this but I’m starting over)
-arrive to work on time and, more challenging, LEAVE work on time
-focus on being more efficient at work and dismiss chatty coworkers!
-focus on some areas to improve at work (have some specific material to work through related to this)

One-time:
-file taxes
-make correction to 2014 state taxes (GADOR fiasco)
-submit grad school application
-book tours and iron out details for vacation
-analyze 2017 spending in detail
-study GMAT

Good luck, everyone!

Caught up by reading the January thread.  Great work everyone!

DH and I have some very intensive eldercare coming up.  It won't last forever but it is consuming us to the point that other things seem to be falling apart.  So my Feb goals are going to be around doing simple but good stuff for ourselves.

1. Walk outside for 30 minutes most days
2. Keep up with knee physio exercises at least every other day
3. Go on one fun activity date with DH
4. Get together at least once with a friend
5. Clean out medicine cabinet (part of very satisfying small job project.)
6. Read 4 books.

Good luck all!

3.  Foam rolling/stretching 5x per week
4.  No alcohol on weeknights
5.  Start vegetable seedlings and baby them for future big harvests
6.  Spend 2 hours per weekend cleaning up garden beds, weather allowing
7.  Make a meal plan each week and stick with it

Doing much better at reaching goals this month. We've been playing games with the kids and reading more. Drawing course is going along well. More running today. This is great!

1. Finish maxing out 2018 Roth IRAs for DH and me - this will be close but with an expectant tax refund I think it can be done! On track for this to be complete 2/28
2. Keep food spending under $750. I'm tracking grocery spending as a whole for 2018 in another thread but with a shorter month, I'm hoping to shave a bit off from my current monthly goal of less than $850. Spent a little more than I'd like so far ($411) but I think we can tighten things up and still make it under budget.
3. Stick to weekly meal plan and grocery shopping for entire month - going okay so far. DH went on a solo shopping excursion and bought some things before I could plan but I did a reverse this passed weekend and made meals out of what he brought home. So still going okay!
4. Learn to make a new recipe for large batch freezer meals - complete! found a budgetbytes recipe for white bean chicken chili - yum

Yikes. Month is almost half over! Status inline.

Financial:

-Spend $200 or less on groceries (have a gift card for the rest) My husband forgot the gift card for a $97 shop, but I actually think we can still hit this, based on where we are now
-Keep dining out to $150 (that's with two birthdays) - Yes, still expect to hit this. Had optimistically hoped to get to $120, but an unplanned meal when we had now power derailed this a bit.
-Pay for plans on house remodel, so we can get a finalized budget & timeline, and make prioritizations - Yes, and now meeting with the designer to further this project.
-Come up with one way to reduce what we need/spend on an ongoing basis - Haven't done anything on this one, so need to come up with something.
-Assuming one car is back from the shop, sell our sedan (carryover from Jan, as car isn't back from shop) - Had a really bad repair shop experience, so now at a new place. This continues to be delayed
-If we sell the sedan, call around for new car insurance. (ditto above)

Family:
-Have one family evening together: cooking dinner, board games, etc - Haven't done much, but all have next Monday off.
-Have a date night with my husband - Not sure this will happen, but we will plan some time together.
-Continue financial help (knowledge, not money) with sister & friend - Yes, sent my "phase two" newsletter, with lots of tips & tricks.
-Determine timing & budget for adults only vacation - Just got details for this yesterday, so should be able to finalize timing & budget.

Fitness/health:
-Complete another full round of 21 Day Fix - I'm down two workouts (pilates & yoga), but have increased other workouts. Still want to make up the gap
-Eat 5.5 servings a day of fruit & veggies - I'm at 4.36, mostly from a business trip. But, closing the gap.
-Lose 3 pounds - have lost 2 of 3
-Run at least 6 times - have run 2 of 6 times

Work:
-Work from home 3 days - Yes, on track for this.
-Take two classes that I need  - Have not done this, & need to get it going

Personal/creative:
-Make one new recipe - Nope, it's been pretty quiet post international work trip
-Spend time with a friend - tried for a hike, but dates haven't worked out yet
-Volunteer at least 1x - Yes!
-Write for at least 4 hours on personal stuff - haven't done this. Need to figure out timing.

I finished my book! The one from January mind, but I did finish it. It wasn't very well written despite containing interesting information so it was a slog. I chose an easier book for "February" and read about a third of it today. :-)

#1 Read at least 2 book
#2 Lose 1lb that I didnt accomplish in January
#3 be at least 50% done with my bathroom remodel
#4 keep working on cutting back on the chips and sweats
#5 Beat our budget. For January came in 400$ and change under. Want to do better this month.

So my goals for February ended as such
1- Finished 3 books
2- Actually gained 2-3 lbs so have to figure out what I am doing wrong
3- Bathroom is 95% done
4- FAILED- which didnt help with #2
5- Hammered it. Beating our budget by just under 3k.

I didn’t check in all month but let’s see how I did:

-CONTINUE walking to work. CHECK!
-CONTINUE no bottled water. CHECK!
-CONTINUE eating all weekday meals at home (usually go out to dinner once per week). CHECK (for the most part)
-CONTINUE using FitBit (not necessarily every day but most days.  Don’t want to be obsessive about it). (CHECK!)
-ESTABLISH daily workout habit - already started this by joining a local yoga studio to get me back in the habit of working out. CHECK! Not literally every day but many days
-ESTABLISH earlier bedtime to support workout habit (in bed at 9, up at 5:30). CHECKISH..need to go to bed even earlier
-Leave Nest thermostat on “Eco” setting all month (already broke this but I’m starting over). FAIL
-arrive to work on time and, more challenging, LEAVE work on time   CHECK...ISH. Room to improve here
-focus on being more efficient at work and dismiss chatty coworkers!  Improved but more room to improve
-focus on some areas to improve at work (have some specific material to work through related to this) FAIL- did nothing on this

One-time:
-file taxes. FAIL!
-make correction to 2014 state taxes (GADOR fiasco). FAIL!
-submit grad school application. CHECK!
-book tours and iron out details for vacation. FAIL!
-analyze 2017 spending in detail. FAIL! But have been analying 2018
-study GMAT CHECK!

1. No eating out, take out, delivery or fastfood. (We were on track for this in January, but birthday boy begged for Domino's pizza..... grrrr)
2. Homemade valentine's for 90 kids, with supplies we have on hand
3. Lose the 1.5 lbs I didn't lose in January,  plus the 1.2 lbs I gained.  Oops!
4. Read 2 books
5. Volunteer work - teach cooking class at local charitable organization

1. So far absolutely no eating out/take out, etc
2. Done! Bought cheap candy to add to the valentines
3. Lost 3.4 lb so far. :) :)
4. Done, have two more ready to start
5. The class is on Monday

I think I need to add more goals. :)
6. Finish quilt top
7. Price a few home reno options & go with most frugal
8. Write 5 and 10 year goal/ plans with DH

February was good.
Done on everything except #7, meeting scheduled with the design shop for next week, and #8 - dh just doesn't care/ will go along with my planning.
Total February weight loss is 4.2 lbs. Had 17 no spend days. I read 4 books.  The cooking class was awesome and I've committed to doing more next semester.
Yay for frugal February!

February Goals:

1. Continue to lose weight (Down 6 lbs in January, yay!) Set back, gained 2 lbs back
2. Average 5,000+/day with Fitbit (up from last year's average of 3k/day) Avg just under 4k/day, since most of month was sick/recovering/caregiver I can live with it
3. Read at least 4 new books w/ at least 1 non-fiction (1 fiction already read) Read over 10, but all beloved rereads while sick/recuperating
4. Put 90% of unexpected bonus plus Feb. budget amounts toward current goals (Car loan payoff and Oct Cruise) Done!
5. Get back to tracking nutrition (Got off track with illness end of Jan.) Never really got back on track, illness just kept passing around our house so everyone was either sick/recovering/caregiver

February was a short frustrating month of repeat illness rotating through the household. Mainly just happy it is over and everyone is relatively healthy going into March. New month...New goals.

Final results for February:

Financial:
-Spend $200 or less on groceries (have a gift card for the rest)  - Yes, we hit this & spent $140.
-Keep dining out to $150 (that's with two birthdays) - Yes, spent $139.
-Pay for plans on house remodel, so we can get a finalized budget & timeline, and make prioritizations - Yes, and now meeting with the designer to further this project.

-Come up with one way to reduce what we need/spend on an ongoing basis - Nope, didn't come up with anything.
-Assuming one car is back from the shop, sell our sedan (carryover from Jan, as car isn't back from shop) - Will need to move out.
-If we sell the sedan, call around for new car insurance. (ditto above)

Family:
-Have one family evening together: cooking dinner, board games, etc - We all went skiing together & had a great time.
-Have a date night with my husband - Yes!
-Continue financial help (knowledge, not money) with sister & friend - Yes, sent my "phase two" newsletter, with lots of tips & tricks.
-Determine timing & budget for adults only vacation - Yes - we are planning for Napa in July while the kids are at camp. Budget is still a work in progress.

Fitness/health:
-Complete another full round of 21 Day Fix - Yes, but I missed a pilates workout. Giving myself a pass on this.
-Eat 5.5 servings a day of fruit & veggies - Finished with 4.4
-Lose 3 pounds - have lost 2.6 of 3.
-Run at least 6 times - run 6 times.

Work:
-Work from home 3 days - Yes.
-Take two classes that I need  - Nope, didn't happen. Work got crazy.

Personal/creative:
-Make one new recipe - No, I've been more focused on cleaning out the freezer this month.
-Spend time with a friend -Yes, did dinner with a friend.
-Volunteer at least 1x - Yes, 2x.

-Write for at least 4 hours on personal stuff - Didn't get this done. Need to find time for this

Overall, I'm pleased with my February progress. I always set lots of goals, so am not concerned by a few misses.
