OK, I'm in.  I tried to do this last year but didn't last very long.  Maybe actually writing this down and posting it will help this year.  For me the problem is the storage.  I live in a very small house (<800 sf) and my closet and bureau are overflowing.  My weakness is going to a thrift store and coming home with 6 - 7 pieces.  I just don't need any more!!!

I've decided to be in. I recently (a week ago) managed to easily zip up my pre pregnancy pants (and not even at my goal weight yet).  Also replaced my swim suit.  So aside from maybe a pair of shoes (I go through 2 pair of running shoes a year), I can do it!

Count me in too. The only thing I may need further down the track is new work shoes depending on how well the current ones wear.

I am one of those people who seem to spend money without even noticing... until I see the total spent on the spreadsheet. Cringe.  So I need this to train myself out of mindless purchases. Also, I am including bath stuff and cosmetics - I will need to replace my mascara at some point but that should be it. I have conquered my shower gel addiction but there is room for improvement.

Happy, I am very impressed with your 2 year success! Very inspiring.

I'm in!  I have about $80 in gift certificates that I will reserve for undergarments, but otherwise, I will be making no clothing purchases until I have lost 40 pounds.  At that point, I will have to reevaluate what I need.

I'm in too...no new clothes, shoes or accessories.
I got socks & underwear for Christmas so those should last the year easily.
Only exceptions will be is if we are invited to be in a wedding party and new shoes for my son (I have already stock his wardrobe in advance with great sales so he has plenty of clothes)

I have been wearing old, familiar clothes but in new combos.  Lately when I look in the mirror almost everyday I am wearing an outfit for the first time.

One thing I am doing is wearing my nicer clothes everyday instead of saving them-afterall, because I am losing weight, soon they will all be too big.  An unexpected side effect of this is that I am feeling better about my appearance because I am wearing more flattering outfits.

I am looking forward to getting rid of too large clothes at the thrift store.

This is a huge issue for me and I am completely on board for the challenge.  I can always seem to justify purchases for clothing, shoes and outerwear, for both me and the kids.  I need to cut out the shopping for all of us and it will save me a tonne. I wish I had tracked my clothing spending last year, but I am new to this stuff and have spent the last 15 years just spending whatever was in my bank account with very little thought.     My only caveat is if by some miracle, I lose enough of my fluff through all the bike riding I am going to do in the coming year to go down a clothing size, then I will try to find second hand clothing, or maybe arrange a swap with friends or something. I am ashamed to admit that I have never bought any clothing second hand, but I have donated 1000s in barely worn clothing, often new with tags.   I also agree that underwear and socks don't count. I just can't abide having dodgy old underwear and my drawer is looking pretty sad.  Thankfully I have a few gift cards that I can use to get me started!

Thankyou. I'm a bit surprised I've gone so long as well. It just goes to show that I had a hugely overstocked wardrobe, way more clothes than I need or will wear out. The only time  I've been tempted is if I'm in a shop looking…so my advice is, don't go window shopping or browsing or anything. Stay out of the shops (or online stores). I don't really like shopping so this is relatively easy for me. The times I've been tempted  both with clothes and household goods, I've been shopping for others.

Yep, staying out of shops is part of my strategy. I escape the office at lunchtime (after eating my lunch) and go for a walk around town/the mall simply to get myself moving. Unfortunately, this sometimes results in me seeing something I want (and on sale!). So I have decided to go walking in one of the nearby parks instead and avoid the mall like the plague. Online shopping is thankfully not an issue for me.

I am in as well!

I am allowing myself to only spend money on repair and maintenance of existing items.  Also, If I really really want to buy something "unnecessary" I am allowing myself to purchase it as long as it is from a thrift store.

For example, blue jeans. I only have black and gray jeans at the moment, and I have recently acquired (for "free") several awesome dark gray shirts that are unfortunately too close to black to wear with the black jeans, and too close to my gray jeans to wear with them.  I say "free", because the shirts aren't really free if I need to buy new pants to wear with them, right? ;)

I'm in. If I absolutely need anything, I'll use gift cards from my Airmiles account, or go to a clothing swap. I definitely don't need any more clothes!

I am tempted to join as well, but my trusty HiTech boots that I bought on clearance for $20 in 2006 finally bit the dust. I'm down to one pair of shoes that I can wear for work, so I might have to get something at some point.

I'm in :) I did pretty well (silently) in 2014:

1 dress for an event (Clearance $12)
1 pair of leggings to replace a worn out pair (Clearance $12)
1 boots for work to replace worn out pair ($26)

I shouldn't need much if anything for 2015- may need a couple shorts for summer, always shop clearance or secondhand, use of giftcards if possible.

I am so in!!! I've spent $1500/year the past two years on clothing/shoes which is insane. I just replaced my two main pairs of work shoes within the past few months (due to puppy chewing and general wearing-out), plus I mink-oiled my favorite go-to pair of boots and patched my leaking rain boots, so I'm feeling totally good to go on the shoe front. I'll make an exception for running shoes since I know I'll need at least one new pair this year due to mileage.

I should be set on clothing including socks and underwear... only thing I might need to replace would be black tights (those never seem to last! argh!) In fact, I even got a bunch of new clothes from my parents and my boyfriend's parents for Christmas, so I'm feeling extra clothing-abundant right now... like, I actually need to get rid of some stuff. I have a wool winter coat (that's 8 years old and still looks awesome), a super nice softshell jacket (that is currently on its way back from getting repaired for free under warranty), and a new rainjacket my boyfriend's mom just got me for my birthday in May... literally can't think of any exceptions I'll need to make or anything I'll need to replace, so I better hold myself to this!!

I will try again.  Failed miserably last year.  I have a ton of really nice clothes.  Most purchased at Salvation Army or super sales.  If someone gives me a gift card though I can use that.  I have to do this a month at at time.  So no new clothes in January.

January 5th - Still on the wagon. I can't even look at catalogues. I'm tossing them into recycling and deleting emails. I have to try to unsubscribe this weekend from both.

I have to return a sweater that was delivered before Christmas.  DH said he would take it back for me, he works close by. What a good guy.

How's everybody doing so far?

5 days in and I can report 100% success rate :D

So far:
- Unsubscribed from some retail emails;
- Walk at lunch time a different route to avoid the mall;
- Walked past a shop on the way to the bus stop yesterday, saw a pretty dress in the window and automatically thought "I should go in later and see what else they have..." before I realised what I was doing. Undoing years worth of Spendism one step at a time.

Oh Wow! I'm out already!

Mr. 1967 took me shopping and wanted to get me some new clothes and I acquiesced.

At the very least, I plan on removing 5 ratty, torn, pilled items from my closet to be replaced by my pretty new clothes. ;-D

I'm a dismal failure as a Mustachian, I'm afraid...

I'm in!

2014 was mostly a success. Purchased:

Op shop sandals - $8
Op shop hoodie - $8
KMart shorts and 2 nighties - $23

I'm a bit ashamed of the KMart purchases. It was done in a rush just before going away on holidays when I realised I'd put on weight and couldn't fit into enough pairs of shorts for our trip, and my night-tops were too tight around my upper arms and affecting my ability to sleep. Oh well. Not too bad.

My exceptions for 2015: sports bra. Really need one in order to exercise comfortably and given how hard it is to find bras that fit and don't itch/rub/hurt when buying new, I'm not going to even bother trying to find one at an op shop.

I tend to spend a significant amount of time looking at clothing online that could be spent much more productively!

That's like a nun watching porn every night. Doesn't really make the challenge at hand any easier ;-)

I'm in!

I'm retiring in April, 2016 so I do not need to buy any more work clothes that will just gather dust once I retire/we move to the country.

I'm also including all makeup and body care supplies:  I want to work my way through these so I don't have to move them.  I have enough lotion, bath gels and perfumes to last at LEAST a year.

I am going to join in, with a couple of exceptions.  I actually have records of clothes going back to the late 80's!  Admitted clothes junky here, but I managed to more than half expenditures this year compared to 2013.  Now, as I no longer need pro. clothes, being retired and all, I have no excuse.  I do need a longer skirt.  I buy underwear 3 years at a time.  Surely I don't need socks.  My winter boots broke(!) this year.  I can do this!

Okay - I am 7 days in am happy to report that I haven't bought anything! This might seems lame, but for me this is progress...usually I am all over the New Years sales to buy stuff at 70% off! I have a 100$ gift card for the Gap and sorely tempted to use it for a few pairs of new jeans on sale, but I am trying to convince myself to save it for later when I might actually kind of need something.  I never realized how much I shopped at lunch house...my office is directly across from a mall...so when you need a break, it is a common habit to just wander around and inevitably buy something.  But I must stay strong...only 358 days to go! LOL!

I received a $50 gift card last summer that I still haven't spent.  I've gotten out of the shopping habit.  You'll get there soon!

I hoping that why they say about 21 days to break a habit is true and that after this first month of not shopping I won't feel the urge as often.  I actually have several buckets of clothing in basement because I did that 333 challenge, with a fair amount of success.  My closet is pretty sparse and only has things that I wear on a regular basis.  So I can always go shopping in my own stuff.  My issue right now is that after all the holiday indulgences, all my jeans are feeling rather snug!  But it is better to work on making them fit again, than to take the easy way out and buy new pants!

I've always hated the process of going shopping for clothes, so that part is easy for me. It's more about getting bored of what I own and wanting new things to mix it up from time to time. I struggled with that part of clothes shopping a few times last year.

I think I will just start with January...I have a bad clothing habit though spending last year was much improved for me. Over the holiday I even tried some cute dresses on at anthro sale and then declined to buy them! I have more than enough clothes right now and am trying to donate/sell some of them. I do expect to buy some jewelry and possibly a pair of boots or sandals later in the year, and may reserve some thrift store shopping too...but hopefully I can remember that I don't need any of the clothes and keep refraining on that end!

Awesome!

I've decided to sell a gift card for a clothing store (through ABC) because there aren't any clothing items that I need.  **The clothing store doesn't sell running shoes, which is my one exception.

I ended up buying 2 bras and a pair of yoga pants right before the challenge started, and then I slipped and bought a jacket with Christmas money (on like December 30), but I returned it today!  Woohoo!  I feel better!

I don't feel bad about buying the yoga pants in preparation for the challenge because I only had one pair of yoga pants, and I do yoga everyday.  I haven't bought a new bra in 2 years--I loathe bra shopping--so it's something I've been meaning to do.

In good news, I sold about $100 worth of clothing on eBay, and I've decided to narrow my challenge to buying underwear only.  I'm not even really sure I'll need to buy underwear.  I definitely don't need bras, tights, etc.

Ten days in and going strong!  1/36th of the year wiped out.

1967mama, two pieces isn't enough to disqualify you, you just have to recommit.  I am getting rid of a pair of leggings and a pair of jeans that are too big now and I tossed one pair of jeans that had stains.  I am still revelling in wearing all my "best" clothes all the time, I feel fab.

See you next week.  Stay off the porn Amyable :)

I had some store credit from ModCloth returns a few months ago, and I bought a winter coat. I don't feel too bad because it was on sale for $40, and also I don't have a winter coat at present. Since I'm planning to leave the snow-bound part of the world this summer, I thought I would try to skate through my last winter with just a leather jacket and layers, but that was a decision I made on a 40 degree day, and now it's been like 1 degree.

So, I got my winter coat. Back on the wagon though! Nothing more is needed!

10 days in and I haven't bought anything. This afternoon, I had a few hours with a babysitter and I debated doing some shopping...but wait!!! I am not buying clothing! So that combined with the fact that it is beyond freezing outside, meant that I took a little nap by the fire instead while Grandma did legos with the kids. Heavenly!  And didn't cost me a cent!

I am starting to stress a bit because none of my summer clothing fits and we are going for holidays in the sun in February. I guess I better shed a few in the next month, or I will have to cross my fingers that Gap has some spring type clothing out and use my gift card!  But I'd rather just fit what I have, because I really like it and I hate shopping for a bigger size - it feels like admitting defeat!

I'm still in!  I was tempted to buy a new belt but will make do with what I have for now.  I had a $10 coupon for LL Bean which I didn't want to waste so I went online to see if there was a pair of socks for <10 which I could get for free, but they're all >10!  So instead, I got some leather preserver ($7.95) for the boots I got my daughter for Christmas.  Those coupons really are an effective marketing tool to get people (me!) to go back online.  Just have to be strong and not spend more than the coupon amount!

See you next week.  Stay off the porn Amyable :)

Haha--I need to get the "clothing pron" providers to stop emailing me!  I seriously came close to buying a coat on sale at Zara this morning for like $59.  I, unlike Miss Madge, do not need a coat.  I have a super nice, more than adequate Patagonia fleece that's only about a year old.  And, it never really gets cold here.  And, the only place I'll be traveling this year is Mexico.  Soooo, there is no excuse.  It is not worth $59 or even $10 to have 2-3 people at work say, "Oh hey, nice coat!"

Elle 8, I am all about the sales, coupons, etc.  I would never buy a new jacket when I don't need one at full price, but knock 40% off, and I'm in.  I've gotten so much better in recent years, but pretty things (clothing, candles, etc.) and nice coffees are my weakness.

I have enough clothing at my current weight (at least until it all starts to fall apart). I have a few pieces that will help me out as I drop the first 5-10kg. But once I've lost 10kg, I think I'll be needing to buy enough to get me through the work week if nothing else.

So far so good.  Tonight I altered my red wide-leg jeans to make them more of a skinny jean - worked great, and I feel like I got something new.

My bugaboo will be preventing scope creep on the riding clothes.  It would be easy to go crazy buying new breeches and boots and polo shirts in lieu of buying regular clothes.  So far I've picked up the winter riding boots I've had my eye on, since they finally went on sale.

I think I can my the running shoes I already have last the whole year, and might get a pair of office-appropriate Vivobarefoot shoes instead, because I think I could use my standing desk more in a completely flat shoe.

Absolutely. I'm covered for a loss of about 7.5kg, although most of this is old and half worn out. Once I get below this I think I'll be pretty well out of options.

It is not worth $59 or even $10 to have 2-3 people at work say, "Oh hey, nice coat!"

Ha, that's such a good way of thinking about it! Something I need to remind myself of :)

No purchases for me so far! I've been too busy to even think about it, which helps!

While I didn't officially join this challenge, I am attempting to keep things to a minimum with just "needs."  So far, I didnt hit any clearance or anything else sales.  Bought a pair of running shoes, quite needed, as I am teaching myself how to run.  The ones I have are not that comfortable.  So, so far, so good. Love it.

Okay, I'm in too.  This is huge for me because I love clothes, especially vintage.  I really need nothing...except a pair of running/walking shoes and I have a giftcard that I can use.  Do gifts count?  Oh gosh I hope I can do this!
