Monthly Goals - January 2022
« on: January 02, 2022, 11:55:50 AM »
For those of us who find year-long New Year Resolutions hard to track or stick to, here is the monthly goals thread, where we can set shorter term goals and reassess how they're working for us each month, as well as one-time tasks and projects.

I'll start!

1. Read 10 books
  a. 1 Philosophy
  b. 1 History/Natural History
  c. 4 from TBR
2. Do at least 10 sit-ups per day (average)
3. Practice meditation at least once a week
4. Spend time outside at least 3 days/week

Creativity:
5. Repair an article of clothing
6. Bake something
7. Try a new recipe

Social:
8. Plan a gathering for friends
9. Plan a gathering for family
10. Plan for Imbolc celebration

Week 1 update!

1. Read 10 books - 2/10 - Barely on track for now, need to pick up the pace
  a. 1 Philosophy - In progress, but it's a beast.  Likely not to finish this month.  I'm going to set the target for 350 pages, or about halfway through.
  b. 1 History/Natural History - None
  c. 4 from TBR - 2/4
2. Do at least 10 sit-ups per day (average) - On track! - One day missed, but a few days over target to make it up.
3. Practice meditation at least once a week - Not started yet.  Trying a new type of meditation, but activation energy is lacking.
4. Spend time outside at least 3 days/week - On track

Creativity:
5. Repair an article of clothing - 2 complete! PJ pants and a glove.
6. Bake something - Macaroni and cheese is technically baked, does that count? (jk, will bake something else later)
7. Try a new recipe - French Onion Soup was a success.  Working on a cranberry shrub as a bonus.

Social:
8. Plan a gathering for friends - No progress
9. Plan a gathering for family - No progress
10. Plan for Imbolc celebration - No progress

January goals

-daily yoga (whatever length): yes..have been doing around 20 minutes per/day
-daily meditation (whatever length): yes..started using a new app that someone recommended on the meditation thread and I’m making time every morning so far
-save $1000 into RRSP: no. was sick so haven’t even been working and no money coming in
-have 10-15 no-spend days: 5 so far this month
-only check fb/ig on sundays (unless it’s for road conditions): yes—this is a real game-changer since I’m using the time for yoga/meditation. Win-win.
-three acts of random kindness one so far, found a girl who was lost and didn’t have a phone. Called her mother for her then texted later to make sure that they located her in the place she had been waiting
-write 50 pages on a creative writing project: none so far—maybe I’ll start tonight

-read a poem daily: yes—and I stayed with the same  poem for the first 5 days of the month since I was enjoying it so much..an interesting process
-start a random conversation with a stranger/at least weekly: not really, haven’t been around people due to illness
-one new recipe/week: yes—made a delightful Pear, cardamom and millet porridge which I’ve been enjoying for a few days now

Ooh I’ll join. Right now my sons daycare hasn’t restarted after the holidays due to COVID, so my main goal is really just “survive”, if this continues into next week and the week after. But as some stretch goals:

- join a run club and start “running”
- review last years spending and discuss some goals with DH
- keep grocery spending under $500
- don’t spend $ on take out. (I have a nice grub hub gift card so can still get a few meals without having to spend my own $).
- don’t drive anywhere (except to keep the battery running)

Love this, thanks - and the edits to show progress! Also really like the categories of goals.

Physical:
Intentional exercise every day
drink water before coffee each morning
Plant based dinners 2x a week
fish dinners 2x a week
Dry January

Creative:
blog 2x a week
find audio editing course to take
learn to edit photos
try 3 new recipes in January
Get comfortable with a belt sander

Social:
Invite people to dinner 2x (Covid might make this a non-starter)
Figure out a zoom kind of progressive party, maybe where each person provides a recipe we all cook

Stretch:
Update provisioning course and increase the price on it

Well already fell down on not driving anywhere. We could have biked but it’s 35 degrees and raining and I don’t have to soft cover for my kids yet (was supposed to be delivered yesterday. And we all needed to go to a testing clinic to get COVID tests to return to school Monday. Well. Time to get back on the horse.

But I did join the run club!

I ran yesterday! I mean. If you could mistake what I did for “running”. But it’s a positive start and I’m a little sore today but not so sore that I won’t do it again.

Joining this thread because I think I’ll enjoy some short term structure and accountability without the pressure of year long resolutions this year

(New baby, maternity leave, general life chaos!)

For the rest of January:

House Tasks
- Clean pantry
- Clean freezer
- Clear out greenhouse
- Clear out last raised bed
- Plant greens
- Put all our appointments on the calendar
- 1 hour discarding work papers

Self care intentions
- Walk with baby most days
- Drink 2l water daily
- Moisturise face/hands/feet daily
- Read at least 20mins daily (not phone surfing)

  c. 4 from TBR - 4/4, fortunately some of these were shorter

Creativity:
5. Repair an article of clothing - 3 complete! PJ pants, a glove, and a t-shirt.
6. Bake something - Plans for banana bread this afternoon

Over halfway through the month, but I’ll join in.  Am off work at the moment, so I definitely have a long list of things I could start tackling around my place this month.  Projects include

- Fix digital piano - pretty big job, have parts already though
- Car maintenance (plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets, intake gasket) - parts ordered
- Clean out spare room downstairs
- Organize office space and papers
- Donate/sell/throw out as much clutter as possible

Happy New Year everyone!

Thanks for keeping up this thread, Raenia. It really helps to strategize when I have too many projects at once.
I am desperate to have time for fun, creative projects and not just for must-do work.

FUN - CREATIVE PROJECTS
1. Garden Decor - turning an old metal gate into a frame for displaying
 - glass - beads - shells - pretty recycled bottles and whatever else I decide on. Suncatchers - doodads - quirkiness...
So far I borrowed the neighbors metal cutter to remove the chain-link ... cut like butter!
Today I plan to paint the frame and Mr. R. is picking up 2 bags of quick-setting concrete to set it into the ground when it is ready. If it gets too windy I'll work on the design layout instead - at this point I'm still playing with design ideas and practical solutions on how to attach it all.

This is one of those projects that has taken years - two years ago I set up the matching gate in the garden as a backdrop for a garden bed - just painted bright turquoise blue and left the metal ornamental doggies (dachshund) up top in silver. The second gate was in a much rougher shape with the chainlink damaged and torn.

2. An Egyptian jewelry set - necklace and earrings.
Started it three years ago but it proved a challenge, then two years ago I picked up some embellishments at the Egyptian Museum in Munich, Germany. My new neighbor is into all sorts of projects incl beads so that revived my interest and enthusiasm.
The plan is to start late next week - I'm looking forward to finally seeing an end product that I like - sometimes we are our own worst critics.

3. Just because:) -I have a lovely rose quartz piece that I forgot about that I am designing a necklace around. (Involves three sets of sparkly mini Czech crystals, black, pink, and black and a bit of fancy-ness around the pendant). I'll do this one first since I have a clear design in my head.

SPRING GARDENING AND PROJECTS
4. Garden path (s) -
Yesterday we started on laying a walkway between the house and the veggie garden. Looks great, now we just need to call our garden guy to do all the dirty work. My arms and shoulders will never be the same after lifting 36 damn 25-pound pavers across the garden fence - free from our neighbor. They are the extra heavy kind designed to hold more weight. A serious workout:).
There may be enough to make a path to the kitchen door as well, we'll see.

5. Border stones for a garden bed.
Got these free from the neighbor as well - about ten big stones. Yup, I lifted those buggers yesterday too. Not sure if these will work as I hoped - they may be too big. I do need a little three-step path through one of my flower beds - it might work well for that, we'll see.
- It is next on my agenda...

6. Spring Garden - by the shed wall.
That has to happen - some now, some can wait another week or two. This is one of those projects that keeps changing and is forced by circumstances and weather and whichever plants turn out to want more shade than the description or tag says it does.
I may be losing my marbles - I received an order from one of my favorite nurseries but not exactly what I thought I ordered. It seems to be a mix of things from an old wishlist and plants I'm fairly sure I did not order or deleted from my order.
I want to plant some lettuce and seed some extra dill by the weekend if at all possible and I'm happy to plant the two sweet peas (the scented, flowery kind) that showed up even though I do not remember ordering them. (the nursery changed hands in Oct and delivery took ages - so I have a feeling it was their fault - shrug).- Planting the sweet peas today...

7. MOONSHADOW - purple climbing beans - a neighborly project.
I will soak some purple beans overnight to be seeded out on the back fence to the neighbors. It is said to have pretty purple flowers so we'll both enjoy them. - Seeding is to commence tomorrow - hence I have to finish weeding and setting up some borderstones today...

8. Planting Sugar Snap Peas (Seeds)
That needs to happen asap but I'm going to put it off until tomorrow because there is too much prep work to do yet and my muscles are still protesting from yesterday.
Really excited to try this new to us varieties. We both love sugar snap peas. - Tomorrow...

9. Veggie Garden - Seeds
Will happen between now and the end of the week. The bed is ready, I just need to make some adjustments and plant the seeds. - This week...
We planted some cabbage babies, Dill, and Onions in that bed already.

10. Moving the old birdbath and buying a new fountain.
Our fountain bit the dust during the last storm so now I am selling some of my restaurant gift cards for cash to buy a new fountain along with using up my Lowes gift cards. So this may not happen until February which is fine, but I need to get the ball rolling and sell the unwanted GC's this month.
This week or next - we'll see...

Last week I cleared the new spot for the birdbath - it will be surrounded by ferns.
Just a matter of Mr. R. moving it and stabilizing it - not my forte - my stuff is always crooked. - Finish this weekend...

11. WEEDING and re-aligning a BORDER (by the new cherry and vanilla blooming Dwarf Poinciana)
- Whenever I can sometime this month, probably while I have my morning coffee...

12. MORE WEEDING...:) and ORGANIZING THE POTTING AREA
 - Hope to have that looking good by the end of the month. - Working on it....

13. PAPER - DE-CLUTTER
By this weekend I need to clear off, sort, and tackle filing of the remaining three stacks left on the credenza in my study.
I tackled two stacks already this month but I got a new TV that will go there instead of on the wall as before. I hate paper clutter yet I'm always inundated with it. This will be finished this weekend come hell or high water.
The study will be an ongoing project but for now, this credenza is my main goal - then it will be time to clear my desk next.
- Working on it...

14. MONEY - PLAN REVISION FOR 2022
1.) I've been working on it as my goals and opportunities have changed. I plan to keep chipping at it until I have a clear, realistic plan that I can review and adjust monthly for a while since it is quite different from what I've done in the past.
I need clear new boundaries and a long talk with Mr. R. - Working on it...
2.) We need to review Mr. R's financials. We may need to make changes and that man does not like change:). Might wait until FEB.

3.) I set myself a little challenge for January and February to use up my entire stash of GC's (sell what I don't want or need so I can get what I do want). I am starting with selling my restaurant GC's....

I will leave it at that - Jan-thru Mar will be all about de-cluttering - spring gardening - spring cleaning - organization. I might look into some help with that before it all becomes too overwhelming. For now, Mr. R. has been a big help physically and my neighbor has been a G-send for my spirit.
 - I'd be further along already but I've been feeling poorly off and on this month, so I am playing a bit of household catch-up as well.
Still all-in-all I'm happy with my progress this month - I just need the de-clutter fairy to wave her magic wand - mine seems to be solidly rusted:).

Good Luck everyone with your own goals!:)

Piano is fixed!  I spent about 8 hours tearing it apart and replacing worn out contacts, then putting it back together.  Really glad that’s done.
Also donated two boxes of things cluttering up the downstairs

On the tail end but still here!

- tailoring new budget for '22. Job changes and insurance switches have altered numbers so trying to track to get realistic budget
-pantry cook and food reset! we were doing so good that we got a bit too lax.
- make my overtime/ xtra money schedule for my very PT second job and OT for my work from home job
- finish the book I am on and go to the library
- Wake up earlier and set a cleaning schedule to make life easier
- activate my month pass for yoga and use it 4x a week. my MIL got me my requested xmas gift, a unlimited monthly pass at a local studio. I don't think I will buy a $90 a month unlimited pass from the studio but I will ask if I can have unlimited classes if I make social media posts for her company. The worst she can say is no. Otherwise Youtube for the free yoga after I activate my monthly pass!
-have a lunch special sushi date with hubs
-start walking on my lunch breaks for exercise

Over halfway through the month, but I’ll join in.  Am off work at the moment, so I definitely have a long list of things I could start tackling around my place this month.  Projects include

- Fix digital piano - pretty big job, have parts already though
- Car maintenance (plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets, intake gasket) - parts ordered
- Clean out spare room downstairs
- Organize office space and papers
- Donate/sell/throw out as much clutter as possible

Piano is fixed!  I spent about 8 hours tearing it apart and replacing worn out contacts, then putting it back together.  Really glad that’s done.
Also donated two boxes of things cluttering up the downstairs

Whooooo! Congratulations!

@dblaace , you can jump in now if you like. Set modest goals for the last 1/3 of the month. Or join next month, your choice.

It’s great to see gardening already on your list @Rosy —we are buried in snow do so I don’t start dreaming about gardening until April at the earliest!

January goals

-daily yoga (whatever length): yes! Great success on this front—my 1 minute minimum means I usually get 10-40 minutes in but without any pressure
-daily meditation (whatever length): yes! Still using the Waking up app, as recommended by someone on the meditation thread. I like the mix of talks/education with meditations. Listened to a great series on Stoicism as well by William Irving (who wrote A Guide to the Good Life)
-save $1000 into RRSP: no. $300 so far .It’s been a money low month due to illness and lack of work
-have 10-15 no-spend days: 12 so far this month
-only check fb/ig on sundays (unless it’s for road conditions): yes—this has been a wonderful shift in how I use my time.
-three acts of random kindness : 3) bought a small chocolate treat for a coworker who always likes to brings things in for others and mentioned that she’d been having a hard week
-write 50 pages on a creative writing project: have only managed a few pages, must revisit my motivation for this particular task

-read a poem daily: yes, mostly. I’ve missed maybe two days
-start a random conversation with a stranger/at least weekly: this one has been harder than I anticipated—not coming into contact with that many people outside of work
-one new recipe/week: yes. Made homemade corn tortillas for the first time as well as an interesting Palestinian pasta dish with yoghurt, pine nuts and parsley, also a chia pudding—which was delicious

I missed two days of run club but have otherwise been doing it.
Have yet to have a formal budget review but we have had some discussion of subscriptions
I have to calculate the damage my Costco run did but we’re pretty close to $500.
We haven’t spent money on takeout dinners. But have on “treats” (cookies) to bribe my son for weekly COVID tests for daycare.
We’ve driven very little. Besides that one day, DH has taken the car for a couple daycare drop offs that were particularly cold and to go to the dentist.

@Raenia : I’ve found the idea of jumping into meditation daunting too because I just didn’t know… what to do? YMMV but I’ve personally found guided meditation to be a good intro. Calm and Headspace apps might be good places to start. If I recall, headspace has some short, free tracks. “Listen to one guided meditation track for X minutes” might be specific and actionable enough to kick your brain into gear. :)

- HALFWAY DONE -
That has to happen - some now, some can wait another week or two.

8. Planting Sugar Snap Peas (Seeds) - Halfway there
That needs to happen asap but I'm going to put it off until tomorrow because there is too much prep work to do yet and my muscles are still protesting from yesterday.

- Moved and set up birdbath - have not looked for fountain yet...

13. PAPER - DE-CLUTTER - DONE FOR THE MONTH - finished this weekend

14. MONEY - PLAN REVISION FOR 2022 - I  HAVE A NEW PLAN - still tweaking it a bit, but done:)
Might - will wait until FEB.

@JAYSLOL - yup, it's a bit ambitious, but spring gardening when you have a big garden can get intense:).

Update:
1. I got hung-up on a different project altogether - a bead curtain for the kitchen, with crystals and semiprecious stone beads. Made me very happy since I haven't done anything creative in a long time. The two jewelry projects I want to do will be much easier and quicker - I may roll one of them over into February since spring gardening is more important - that is still two creative projects this month. Three projects if I count collaborating with my neighbor about a glass decor object (garden) that needed refurbishing.

2. Glad the decluttering is going well and I finished my goal of clearing off the credenza on the weekend. So that is a clear win.

3. The birdbath looks great in its new location and I have been making progress with spring gardening, just not as much as I'd hoped. We might actually get close to freezing for the first time in a long while. It was 38 degrees F this morning. Tomorrow will be yucky, cold and rain - so no gardening for me.
Once the sun shines I'll brave some more clean up and weeding but it will set me back since I am a bit late with the seeds, but still OK.

4. The new money plan for 2022 is in place - Success.

We'll see what this week brings, much depends on the weather for gardening. I'll concentrate on de-cluttering instead.

Thanks, seems to be fairly mild for us, definitely past the worst of it.  Hanging out all 3 of us together and watching lots of movies hasn’t been the worst way to spend a week

Week 4 update!

1. Read 10 books - 11/10 - Made it!
  a. 1 Philosophy - 479/350, Not a lot of progress this week, but I still think I'll be able to finish next month.
  b. 1 History/Natural History - Started one, won't finish.
  c. 4 from TBR - 6/4, complete
2. Do at least 10 sit-ups per day (average) - On track, average down to 14
3. Practice meditation at least once a week - Not started yet.
4. Spend time outside at least 3 days/week - Almost, slightly behind but as long as I go out in the next few days I'll make it.

Creativity:
5. Repair an article of clothing - 3 complete! PJ pants, a glove, and a t-shirt.
6. Bake something - Banana bread, apple cider donuts (from a mix), and rye bread.
7. Try a new recipe - Done! French Onion Soup was a success.  Cranberry shrub also a success.

Social:
8. Plan a gathering for friends - No progress, might push this to next month
9. Plan a gathering for family - Done!, organized and bought tickets for an art exhibit with my mom, sister, MIL, and SIL.  Event is in Feb.
10. Plan for Imbolc celebration - No progress, really need to do this as it's coming up fast

Thanks for the suggestion @Britan but I'm not sure if guided meditation exists for this type, I think it would be counter productive.  I've done normal mindfulness and loving/kindness mediation before and I don't find it useful, so I stopped.  I recently read about a different kind called didactic meditation, where you work through an idea or concept and track the route of your thoughts when you get off track.  I read about it in a book on modern Druid practices.  Guided meditation I don't think would work for this as you wouldn't be following your own track of thoughts.

Well, I've done well with some of my goals . . .

Dry January: still on track but admit I'm looking forward to a glass of wine
Intentional exercise: rocking it. Upped the ante last week and got into a groove of walking and a video workout every day. Feeling good.
Water before coffee: Yes!
Eating MUCH less meat: YES! (not at the fish 2x a week yet, but sticking with 1-2 meat dinners a week so far. Since DH is a meat-and-potatoes fan, this is a big change)

Pretty much a bust on everything else.

@Raenia oh neat I had never heard of that. That does sound interesting. And yeah guided meditation would not work for that. :)

I think I’ve missed all my goals but shoot for the moon even if you miss, you know?
- join a run club and start “running”
I have joined but I have skipped at least half the days. :(
- review last years spending and discuss some goals with DH
Done, informally. Made a few changes to recurring expenses
- keep grocery spending under $500
Nope. But I think I got close. Under $600 I’m sure.
- don’t spend $ on take out. (I have a nice grub hub gift card so can still get a few meals without having to spend my own $).
Nope. DH wanted something that wasn’t on grub hub so we got it. And we’ve been buying cookies for Son’s weekly COVID testing bribe.
- don’t drive anywhere (except to keep the battery running)
I tentatively give us this one. The only place I drove was to a COVID test that was put in the county, as it was the only place we could get a test that weekend. DH took it to get groceries today, but only because we haven’t driven it in awhile and it’s been cold so he figured he should get it moving.

Excited for the February thread!

Still all-in-all I'm happy with my progress this month - I just need the de-clutter fairy to wave her magic wand - mine seems to be solidly rusted:).

Good Luck everyone with your own goals!:)

@JAYSLOL - yup, it's a bit ambitious, but spring gardening when you have a big garden can get intense:).

1. Carrying the gate-garden decor over into February - only about 25% done, I chose to give a different project priority - the bead curtain valance is 75% completed - not too shabby. I'd call it a PARTIAL SUCCESS.
2. The Rose Quartz Pendant and Jewelry project - 90% complete - might yet get finished tomorrow, making it a POTENTIAL SUCCESS.
3. The Egyptian Jewelry Set - FAIL - will carry over into Feb - still looking forward to finishing it soon:).

Spring Gardening - Projects
OVERALL a 65% SUCCESS - I'm OK with that, given that
I had a couple of days where I wasn't up to par
I opted for and/or was forced to add a couple more different garden projects - which were completed instead.
Spring Gardening and Projects will continue for the next two and a half months.

Money - Plans - Completed except for some fine-tuning and a discussion in Feb. DONE
GC sales - FAIL
Paper Clutter - MET MY GOAL FOR JANUARY
- but this will continue into Feb and March.

All in all - I'm fine with the results and ready to continue into February. Having a public list has served as a nudge towards staying focused and keeping my eye on the ball.

end of month update: January goals

-daily yoga (whatever length): yes! have surprised myself by sticking to this. The flexible time minimum really frees me up to just go for it daily regardless of how long I do
-daily meditation (whatever length): yes, have stuck with it. Am still very distractable but at least noticing it now
-save $1000 into RRSP: managed $500, was a very low income month
-have 10-15 no-spend days: yes!
-only check fb/ig on sundays (unless it’s for road conditions): yes, likely the one change which has freed up the most time and mental space
-three acts of random kindness: yes
-write 50 pages on a creative writing project: no

-read a poem daily: I’d say 85% success
-start a random conversation with a stranger/at least weekly: well..not really as much as I hoped for. I’m quite chatty at work but very private and quiet out in public it seems
-one new recipe/week: yes—made an interesting soba noodle dish this week. Lime & ginger and cilantro/coriander sauce with broccoli, tofu, radish slices, very pleasing to look at as well as tasty—from One (Pot, Pan, Planet) cookbook

I hope you don't mind me re-casting some of the harsher judgements:

@Raenia oh neat I had never heard of that. That does sound interesting. And yeah guided meditation would not work for that. :)

I think I’ve missed all my goals but shoot for the moon even if you miss, you know?
- join a run club and start “running”
I have joined but I have skipped at least half the days. :( ran infinetly more than December
- review last years spending and discuss some goals with DH
Done, informally. Made a few changes to recurring expenses Yay!
- keep grocery spending under $500
Nope. But I think I got close. Under $600 I’m sure.  Yay!
- don’t spend $ on take out. (I have a nice grub hub gift card so can still get a few meals without having to spend my own $).
Nope. DH wanted something that wasn’t on grub hub so we got it. And we’ve been buying cookies for Son’s weekly COVID testing bribe. Only $x rather than $YYYY spent this month (the cookies are a different category - they're not "just because")
- don’t drive anywhere (except to keep the battery running)
I tentatively give us this one. The only place I drove was to a COVID test that was put in the county, as it was the only place we could get a test that weekend. DH took it to get groceries today, but only because we haven’t driven it in awhile and it’s been cold so he figured he should get it moving.  Yay!

Excited for the February thread!

Hah @oneday thank you. :) I can be overly hard on myself sometimes… most of the time. Lol.

I did in fact run infinitely more than in December. ;)
