Title: March ~ Weight Loss Challenge
Post by: wildbeast on February 22, 2018, 10:35:40 AM
Would anyone be interested in a monthly weight loss challenge?

I find that I do best when I have a clear goal or challenge, go at it strong, and then enjoy finishing it off and moving on to something else.  I think having a monthly thread would help with that.  The daily tracking can feel kind of discouraging with the slow progress and starts and stops.  And the year-long one feels overwhelming because it will take so long to reach that goal.

I also like the idea of moving on from a month in which there might not be much loss at all.  Finito.  Done.  A new month is a new start.  No need to dwell on failure anymore.  Instead, there is new hope and promise right around the corner.

Fantastic!!!

You've set a mighty goal NinetyFour.  My goal is 6.5 lbs and I've been seriously debating bringing it down to 5, but now you've got me jazzed up.

So glad to have you on board!

My March goal is 4 pounds (1/week). I'm also going to do another round of 21 Day Fix workouts (it's strength training, HIIT, + yoga, Pilates, etc). And, I'd like to run 8 times in March.

I'm trying to lose weight, but I tend to go in three-week spurts when I have a bet with DH. (If I lose the bet I have to play board games, which I don't like.) I'll at least follow along here, and cheer.

I tried to join a weight loss challenge at work and they wouldn't let me!

I plan to lose 15-30 lbs in March or very early April!

I am also pregnant and due in late March, that is probably why they wouldn't let me join.  Something about being unfair.

This is excellent!

I've created a roster at the beginning of the thread for everyone who is participating and the goals listed.  If I missed anyone, or made any mistakes, please let me know.

This is going to be fun!

@Slow&Steady - you can join our challenge!  We'll get to celebrate with you when you reach your goal.  :)

Awww, thanks!  I was really just joking but since they told me no at work I have been dying to use that "joke" somewhere.  Maybe updating on my joke will help motivate me after baby gets here!

I'm an infrequent visitor to the mmm forum, but count me in, I like this idea a lot. Helps me stay motivated and successful if I tell other people I'm gonna do something like this.

Goal: to lose 10 pounds (from 211 or so to 201).

I would love to join. Tried the annual challenge for a while but I got lost. Last weigh-in was 175 so I'll pick 6 pounds for my March goal. Getting back into the 160s will feel pretty inspirational!

I'm in for 5 lbs, which from today's weight will get me to my final goal. I've been posting in the year-long thread but my progress has leveled off after going back to work at the beginning of February. My baby is almost 4 months old.

@Slow&Steady I think you will win this challenge:), but my suggestion would be not to weigh yourself for at least 2 weeks post baby. It takes time to get rid of the water weight. I wish you nice warm weather for your maternity leave.

So I am getting ready for this challenge today.

Set up a my Fitness Pal account and discovered a MMM low cost food problem.....
How do you count calories when you are so cheap your food doesn't have labels?

I decided to start tracking my calories to try and lose some weight.   I cook from scratch all the time and source much of my food from local farms.  I also have a huge garden and I do a lot of preserving including canning, freezing and dehydrating.

So now I need to weigh my eggs to figure out what size they are.  Egg sizes are based on weight and I have never weighed mine. I have not idea if they are large eggs or extra large eggs.

Also what do I do about all the large batch cooking I have in my freezer.  I know what is the containers but I have no clue how much of each ingredient went into it.

What is the calorie content of my tomato sauce, salsa, and other home canned goods. I didn't weigh the ingredients when I  made 40 quarts of tomato sauce last summer so I will have to guess.

Weighing all my ingredients when I cook is going to be much harder than pulling a box out of freezer but it needs to happen.

A lot of weight loss programs don't rely on calorie counting -I just go with those :)   In my case, I eat unlimited amounts of a wide range of foods, no counting, no weighing.

I do that already.  Due to allergies and medical dietary restrictions have already cut out all grains except rice.
I also cut out artificial sweeteners, alcohol, refined sugars and about 2 dozen high FODMAP fruits and vegetables. I can't eat wheat, corn, soy, beans, bulb onions, bulb garlic, tapioca, or alcohol so I have already eliminated the worst of the Standard American Diet foods.  Sugar consumption is basically is just some fruit since I don't like sweet beverages. I have been doing this for a year and a half and haven't lost any weight in over a year.

Since I already eat a lots of veggies, some fruit, pastured/grass fed meat and dairy and our own backyard eggs I must be eating more calories than I burn so I need to get my portion control dialed in.

I am just an honorary member of this challenge but I might be able to help with some of your questions.  When I was actively loosing weight I did it by counting calories (on MFP).

So I am getting ready for this challenge today.

Set up a my Fitness Pal account and discovered a MMM low cost food problem.....
How do you count calories when you are so cheap your food doesn't have labels?
Search in MFP and use a good guess. A good guess is better than not counting it at all

MFP has a recipe section, you can put your entire recipe in there and then tell it how many servings that recipe makes.  When you eat it go in there and add the number of servings you had that day.  A decent food scale (at the thrift store, if you don't have one) is worth it.

Weighing all my ingredients when I cook is going to be much harder than pulling a box out of freezer but it needs to happen.
It is a little bit of a pain, but only in the beginning, then it is just a habit.  What I did was keep a small notepad in the kitchen and we just wrote everything that went in and weights on the paper, once I got a minute I would add it all into the app as a recipe and it was already there the next time I needed it.

I have been doing this for a year and a half and haven't lost any weight in over a year.

Oh!!!

I've seen programs give estimated calories for natural foods, based on size or weight of the portion. With you eating so specifically, I guess you could make yourself a quick, personalized chart from those.
Title: Re: March ~ Weight Loss Challenge
Post by: cats on February 28, 2018, 05:36:03 PM
I agree, make a guess and just be consistent about the guess you are using.  I think for homemade food a big key is to be consistent about measuring out a portion.  If you aren't currently losing weight, start using measuring cups or scales to measure out what you are eating.  Once you figure out what your typical daily intake looks like, start cutting down the portion sizes a bit. e.g. if you usually eat 3 eggs for breakfast, see how you feel with 2.  If your usual handful of nuts works out to 1/2 c., try limiting yourself to 1/4 c.  If that frozen container of food you are pulling out of the freezer usually makes 4 portions, see if you can make it 6 and add more veggies to make up the volume on your plate.  If your normal fruit is a banana try an apple or an orange instead. Etc.

If you are like me you probably repeat a lot of recipes or a lot of your recipes are fairly interchangeable in terms of calories/macronutrient content.  If that's the case after a while you will have most of your usual meals inputted to MFP and you'll just have to select from your common meals.

From my experience I found that if my calorie consumption got to LOW I would stop loosing weight.  Something about your body storing calories to prepare for upcoming famine.  I don't know if this is completely true (especially for over a year) but I did start shedding more weight when I bumped my calorie intake up 100-200 calories a day.

It's time everyone!  Are you guys ready?

I've been thinking of this challenge as a sort of relay effort - we're not competing against each other (unless you enjoy that sort of thing, in which case, go ahead!) but rather participating in a joint effort to accomplish a goal.  Though we each have individual portions of that goal, and we want to do our best to achieve it, we can also harness the benefits of doing the whole as a group.

I hope this thread will serve as a place for ideas, support and encouragement for everyone.

Ok, GO!!!!!

Ready!  I did my "official" March 1 weigh-in in this morning: 149.8 lbs.  So my target for 3/31 is 146.8 or less.

My plan is to track all food in MFP, and stay under 100g carbs M-F and in the 1500-1800 cals/day range.  On the weekends I'm planning to not worry so much about carbs and eat at a more "maintenance" level of calories (2000-2200).

For exercise, I do some kind of home workout with free weights or bodyweight 4-5 mornings a week, and walk a lot.  This month I am also going to challenge myself to use the stairs at my office (10 flights) at least 2x/day on the days I am in the office (3-4x/week).  I'm hoping this will help me to feel less lethargic at the office and thus less prone to snacking.

For Reasons, March would be a good time to visit my mom, who eats only starch all day long and puts endless lovely ones out on offer too. On several counts, it is simplest to just "go with it." However, I am in a Lenten focus which (as it happens) eliminates everything she eats. My first idea was to just not go in March! Thanks to this thread, this morning it occurred to me that I could go and stick with my Lenten focus. It would involve some extra strategies, but why not? Why not go, eat optimally while there, and return at the same size I arrived in?

I have learned in the past that the only way I lose weight is to do a food diary. I do count calories, but just as important is the simple act of writing down everything I eat. I have totally managed to NOT eat things just because I didn't want to write it down. I've used Lose It in the past, but am trying My Fitness Pal this time. I like that Map My Walk interfaces with it, and I can earn extra calories by logging a walk.

March 1 start...159.6.
Goal...155.6

I weigh in on Mondays, so please forgive the slight head start:

2/26: 175.5
Goal for 3/31: 169.5

Yesterday was a great start. Calories were around a 700 deficit, which is pretty much on target for a 6 pound loss.

March 1 (37 weeks pregnant) = 217.4 lbs

Goal was a healthy baby that also knocked off 15-30lbs (preferably 30lbs).  I found out yesterday that she is currently breech, I have a week so see if I can get her to flip before they start talking about a c-section.  I guess the healthy baby part of the goal just got a lot more important.

3/1 4.6 lbs from goal. I plan to post a weigh in every week.
I need some mustachian opinions here:
I am thinking of joining the YMCA because workout childcare is included with the membership, and I enjoy group fitness classes . It costs $58 per month, and I would be able to go 3x/week with my current work schedule, and bring my 2 kids. My older child is almost 3 and has never really been around other kids, so I think it would be good for him as well. I am a bit nervous about exposing my new baby to illness though. I can afford it but it would reduce my savings rate. The alternative would be to continue my home workouts, which involve waking up really early or asking DH to watch the kids, and often get interrupted or postponed.

@ Slow&Steady good luck. My first was breech due to low fluid and I ended up with a c-section 3 weeks early, but he has been a healthy kid ever since. I was able to have a vbac with my second. Have you checked out the spinning babies website?

145. The goal is below 140 by the end of this month. I feel like I lose the same 10-15 pounds over and over and over.

I am sipping my protein shake for breakfast and have a salad planned for lunch. My goal is 15 soups and 15 salads in March with protein shake/poached egg/oatmeal rotation for breakfasts.

Monetarily, that sounds like a great deal! I too would be concerned about the baby -not that Baby can't handle it (unless premature or something, s/he can), but about how much time you might end up dealing with symptoms vs getting to work out. Could you take older kid, and go when dad can care for Baby?

Thanks for your reply Jooni,
If I am just taking oldest kid, there is actually a cheaper gym I can go to that charges per child (would be $39/month for me and one child, if I go at least 10x/month, or $49 if I go less than that), but has very limited infant care hours that conflict with my work. I don't think my DH would be willing to do it 3days/week though, because he is with the kids all day when I work and he needs a break too. As far as illness, baby will probably catch whatever oldest brings home anyway.

Good call! Unless your mother is only prone to starch pushing in March, but that seems unlikely...

How old is your baby?  My experience with FT daycare (so not really the same thing) was that as soon as we put my kid in (around 6 months, also at the beginning of cold & flu season) he caught a cold, and passed it onto me.  I then proceeded to get some kind of gnarly and extended cold from him about once a month for the next 5 months, including my first ever sinus infection requiring antibiotics to treat.  His second winter in daycare (this year) he has been much less sick but has also passed less onto me, and I have recovered from illnesses much faster.  I think I was more susceptible to his illnesses in the first year because I was not sleeping properly (he was still waking at night to nurse), and because breastfeeding is a huge drain on your body.  I was also dealing with my sleep deprivation by eating quite poorly, so that was less than awesome.  In retrospect, if I had had the option, I probably would have tried to keep my kid away from too much germ exposure until he was sleeping through the night and *I* was less susceptible to getting ill (and better able to take care of myself if I did catch something).  So if your baby is still waking up at night, I would say to wait another couple of months!  Maybe try in April or May when cold & flu season will be well and truly over and there will be less floating around for baby to catch.

Also, what kind/length of home workouts are you trying to do now?  If you are aiming for something like an uninterrupted 30-min workout, perhaps try some shorter workouts (there are lots of options out there for HIIT workouts that are <10 min), or incorporating more activity into the rest of your day with things like doing 10 squats every time you go to the bathroom, etc.  I have been increasingly finding that while exercise does great stuff for my mental health and it's important to build strength, etc., it really does very little for weight loss...for that end of things I need to focus more on getting enough sleep (because I tend to eat junk food more when I'm tired), and eating properly.

...baby will probably catch whatever oldest brings home anyway.

They (we) seem to have less and less response to common viruses as we grow, though. i.e., Three year old may "bring home" far less than baby would pick up at the site directly.

cats' words on the topic resonated strongly for me. Personally, I would stick with the nondaycare-dependent workouts for the first good while. I think it's great for babies to be exposed to stuff, but a daycare gym 3x/wk can be overload.

@ Slow&Steady good luck. My first was breech due to low fluid and I ended up with a c-section 3 weeks early, but he has been a healthy kid ever since. I was able to have a vbac with my second. Have you checked out the spinning babies website?

Thank you, my 1st was not breech but did have low fluid so a whole new world of Google was introduced to me last night when I got home from the doctor.  I did find the spinning babies website but have not tried any of their exercises/stretches yet.  I just got back to work (shh don't tell them I am on MMM) from a chiropractic visit, what I read last night the Webster Technique (chiro) has been pretty effective at turning babies.  We will see, I have 2 more chiro visits next week before I will have to maybe start talking about a c-section.

I never tried the chiro but my doctor did attempt a version which didn't work, probably because there wasn't enough fluid in there. I did try handstands in the pool :) Some doctors will attempt a breech vaginal delivery as long as it isn't your first one.

@ every one else, thank you for the advice, I might wait a month or two to try the gym thing, and then it will be warm enough to take the kids on walks anyway. My baby is 4 months old and still waking up at least once per night.  As far as sleep goes I thought the gym would help because I could sleep a little later in the morning and not miss my only chance for a good workout that day. I agree about food being the key to weight loss but I think an uninterrupted workout and a shower would be great for my mental health.

It would also be a good way to get the toddler used to being away from a parent/ with other kids before he goes to preschool (work schedule is too irregular for Mommy and me type classes, I work 3 12s, but a different 3 days every week, and.my DH refuses to go to that sort of thing).

My home workouts have been:
Running on my treadmill if I get up before everyone else (tricky with breastfeeding, I have to feed baby first, get him back to sleep, then get my workout in before the 2 year old wakes up), or I can do if baby naps and DH takes the 2 year old out shopping or something. Once baby can sit up I can run outside with both in the stroller.
yoga videos: can do with baby while 2 year old is napping or out with dad
Dumbbells/kettle bells: can do 10 min before leaving for work, or if I get both kids to nap.
Squats/ ab exercises can do a little at a time throughout the day

I'm still here.  I was traveling for work and got back last night.  My weight was up this AM (really not surprising) but it should start dropping nicely once I'm not sitting for 10 hours a day and eating what ever I can find.

Today is grocery list and meal planning day.  Fun!

Edit to add, I use sparkpeople.com to do my food and activity tracking (and find information and buddies) and sparkrecipes.com to track homemade foods that I split into portions.  It really helps me see what is going on.

I am also joining a gym challenge at work, can't let the team down!  Relatedly, I am training for a work 5k.  Can't let my work buddies down :).

How's everyone doing?

This is that TOM for me so I'm not weighing in, but I'm pretty happy that I feel good and my sugar cravings are low enough to be manageable.  I'll probably do weekly weigh-ins.  For a while I was doing it daily and it drove me nuts.

I'm using Cronometer for tracking (though I've scaled back on that too) and I like it.  It tracks net carbs in the free version (for those who watch carbs), and you can preset an eating plan to help you set up your goals.

I know that for weight loss, diet is more important than exercise. However, I have been making a real effort to get out and walk more regularly this year and I think it helps keep me goal motivated. I have a very sedentary job, so getting out for a quick walk (with a podcast!) makes a good break.

Mondays are a good day to weigh in for me. I try not to look more than once a week.

March 1...159.6.
March 5...158.2

Goal of 4 pounds for March
1.4 pounds down

SAME! This week I am following a trainer's advice to get 100 grams of protein.  She also said 1800 calories, but I'm sticking with 1600, which is still more than I usually try to eat when I am "dieting." I've mapped out my week, and as long as I stick to the plan, I will know if this way works, at least if it will show results within 7 days.

I really want it to work, though, because next Tuesday is a happy hour with some former co-workers, and I'd like to look a little better than I do right now.

Have had a cold or sinus thing for last 6 days which has eliminated booze and any food outside the home so doing pretty well from a food perspective less so from a life one. On the mend now and in California for a week which always means lots of wine and food. Goal is to exercise daily and focus on portions will also go to the Japanese baths which helps detox and lose bloating and water weight. I’ll probaly end up weight wise where I started but we shall see.

Start (2/26): 175.5
3/5: 174

Down 1.5 pounds, which is pretty much exactly on target for a 6-pound total loss. Doing exceptionally well on the tracking (not entirely the eating, but writing it all down).  I have been focusing on getting in 5,000 steps every day, per FitBit, but I also need to add in some more intentional exercise--not just running in circles and up and down the stairs every evening to break 5,000 after a day at the sedentary office.

I only weigh myself once a week because I've found I can fluctuate wildly over the course of a week.  I could make myself nuts, so I'm pretty disciplined about the Monday morning ritual.

Hope everyone is doing well!

I just weighted myself on Monday since my scale needed new batteries and I finally got around to picking some up. It's the first time I weighted myself in a long time and the number was higher than expected. Though I should have know what with all the snaking and no exercising! Anyway, I've been working out and trying to eat less snacks for the past couple days. I hope to get back to running this week too. I'll weight myself again this weekend after I've had a few days to get this "diet" under way.

March 5th - 129.4
End of March goal - 125.4
0/4 lbs

Well folks - one week down, three to go! How's everyone doing on their first week?

I weighed in this morning expecting a gain of a couple of lbs (that time of month), but I wanted to log it just for tracking purposes so I can establish a pattern on my tracking app.  And lo and behold, I'm down 1 lb!!!  Woo-hoo!!!

Since my goal is 4 lbs for the month, this puts me right on schedule.

Ready!  I did my "official" March 1 weigh-in in this morning: 149.8 lbs.  So my target for 3/31 is 146.8 or less.

3/8: 150.6  Not good!

I know I am getting into my more bloaty part of the month (which seems in the past year or so to have extended out from a week to 10-14 days), so I am trying to to get too hung up on it.  I have been diligently tracking food and exercising and I know I am at an energy deficit, so hopefully I will see a big drop soon in a week or so.  I am feeling pretty good overall.

I also did my monthly body composition scan with my "wellness coach" (a free perk my office started providing last year).  I'm not sure how accurate these things are (my husband says if you aren't getting thrown in a tank of water it's all nonsense, heh) but it did show that I have lost 3 lbs of fat (and gained 1 lb of muscle) since the beginning of February, which makes me feel somewhat more cheerful about my slow progress on weight loss.  I do think my clothes are feeling looser than they were at the beginning of February.  But dammit I do want the scale to go down a little!!!

BABY FLIPPED!!

I had my doctor's appointment yesterday, the only place I currently weigh in (guess I need to get batteries for my scale for after baby gets here) and we discovered that I am down about 3 lbs.  I think this is mostly due to shoes, when I first got pregnant I had to wear steel toed shoes everyday so I always took them off but the last couple of appointment I did not have those shoes on so I left them on for weigh in.  While yesterday I took my shoes off again and either I actually dropped a few lbs or my shoes weigh 3 lbs.  I know my weight is really just for fun on this thread but since you guys didn't kick me out I figure I better participate!

March 1 (37 weeks pregnant) = 217.4 lbs
March 8 (38 weeks pregnant) = 214.6 lbs

YAY!  Congrats on the good news!

Sadly, I'm back up to 174.2 this morning.  :(  :(  :(
I think it's probably temporary because I think I've been pretty good about logging food, sticking to 1400-1500 calories, and working out, but it's discouraging as hell.  I know I really need to eat 1200 to reliably lose weight, but it's damn hard to stick to that. Especially to do it and socialize.  My friend and I almost got kicked out of a restaurant last night because I didn't order an entree.

Bah. I'm also back up to 174 so no change here :(

I'm hoping some of that is bloating and water weight and I'll be down a lot next week, but that seems like it's usually wishful thinking for me.  I followed my workout schedule religiously and stuck to 1400-1500 calories all week until Friday night.  I was at work, it was 8 pm, I'd met my calorie goals but I was hungry, I was PMSing and depressed about seeing an increase on the scale, and I was surrounded by chocolate cake, doughtnuts, and bagels. Bad things happened. Yesterday I was up 1.6 lbs from the beginning of the month. Fortunately it didn't stick.

I want to start tracking my calories here and seeing if that does a better job of keeping me from going off the deep end.

Saturday 3/10:  1203 kcal.  Workout done.
Sunday 3/11: Weigh in: 174 lbs. (Delta = 0) 1236 kcal. Workout done.
Monday 3/12: 1326 kcal. Rest day.
Tuesday 3/13: 1626 kcal. Estimating involved. Workout done.
Wednesday 3/14: 1371 kcal. Workout skipped.
Thursday 3/15: 1614 kcal.  Rest day.
Friday 3/16: 1772 kcal. Estimating involved. Leg day
Saturday 3/17: 1323 kcal. Arm day.

Known challanges this week:
Monday - baby shower:  plan: take fruit and veggie platters, only snack from those. No dips.
Monday - drinks after work with a friend. Plan: one beer. I got coupons for free salads from a new salads and healthy stuff restaurant so we agreed to go there for dinner afterwards instead of eating greasy bar food.
Friday: Dinner with friends.  We'll be celebrating the engagement of one and the med school acceptance of the other. Engaged girl announced "we'll have to drink a lot!" Plan: cheat night? Feign a sinus infection and being on meds that prohibit drinking? <- Probably a good idea since I don't like her fiance and med school friend and I both wonder if this engagement is a good thing for her. Wouldn't want to say anything ill-advised.

I'm feeling really grateful for past experience. Now I know the following mean nothing in relation to health or weight:
*what size I feel like in my body
*what displays on the scale
*what my eyes see in the mirror

Now over the course of a month I can just float along, eating optimally, moving normally, and knowing that somedays I will feel blobbier, some days I will appear unchanged or puffier than the previous, some days the scale will say a bigger number than it did recently.

My biggest turnaround with this came with a short stint in Overeaters Anonymous. When I ate optimally and moved naturally, and was getting healthier and healthier, I bumped into those. I was blown away to discover that I can be getting healthier *and* feel blobbier on some days or look "the same as I started". In fact, I was leaner and more compact; my perceptive brain was doing tricks! Or the scale would go up instead of down, but I learned that was completely meaningless, too.

I'm down several pounds since I started my Lenten focus, but I put little weight (haha) in that, too. What's relevant is that my clothes are easier to be in, my size is again the one most comfortable to move in, my period is easy, my sleep is lovely, I feel calmer, my skin is brighter. Those are the signs I'm living well.

Ignoring the three tricks is key for me.

I weighed in this morning for research purposes (I'm tracking my changes in weight during my menstrual cycle) and the scale showed a 3+ lb gain this morning from Thur's weight.  It's strange because my period is pretty much done so I didn't expect to see a gain now.  I did overeat last night so it might be from that! :)  But it's easier to blame my period.  :)

This is why I like the monthly goal though - there are so many fluctuations on the scale, especially for us ladies.  Even my dh saw a jump on the scale when he started eating sunflower seeds because of the salt.

As of right now, I'm exactly 2 lbs heavier than I was on Feb 1st!  But I'm not going to let that make me feel bad.  I'm just going to continue eating well.  I trust that my body will be in better shape at the end of the month.

Don't lose faith everyone!  And feel free to vent on here when you're feeling discouraged, disappointed or angry.  It's better to vent and let those feeling go than to keep them bottled up.

Late to the party (for March), but can I still play? -- although my goal is in waist size, not pounds. For March, which I started at 37.9", my goal is 37.1".

(Yes, those are ridiculously precise numbers. I'm a geek. But this is MMM and that's okay, right?)

(I've been at this weight loss thing since May, and my pounds are down around where I want them. But I do want to shrink the rest of this belly. My ultimate goal is 33.75". At that point I get to declare victory, regardless of weight.)

Start (2/26): 175.5
3/5: 174
3/12: 173.2

Down 2.3 pounds total--not quite on track for 6 pounds this month, but my BMI hit 29.9, which means I am officially no longer obese!  I'll take it.

Jane X, thank you for starting this thread. Sorry the scale is being stubborn for you--crazy fluctuations are why I stopped weighing in mid-week.  Strangely I've always found my weight goes up right at the end of TOM too (not the beginning or middle).

Went for a run yesterday. First time in a while. Made it 1 mile in 11:16 Hard to believe only a few years ago I was running 3-4 times a week and even completed a marathon! My Best Friend just did her first marathon at the beginning of the month and I really want to get back into it plus it'll help with getting back to my goal weight.

@koshtra - I love this idea!  Everyone keeps saying that measurements are the best way to gauge weight loss.  Give me your goal in inches you want to lose and I'll add you to the list.

If anyone else wants to add a goal in inches, let me know.

Done!  You've inspired me to actually take measurements and pay attention this month so that I can set a goal in inches for April.  Thanks!  :)

The trouble with steering by waist measurement, generally, is that the measurement tolerances are a lot larger than the amount you want to lose per week. I mean, I want to lose about 0.2 inches per week, but daily fluctuations and measurement error can easily be 0.6. So no one measurement tells me very much.

This is somewhat true of weight and scales, too, of course -- my scales can vary up to two lbs either way of "true," even leaving aside the fluctuations of my body weight (which also fluctuates a pound and a half per so in the course of a day). But the scales are at least less prone to human error.

Yeah, I guess you can manipulate a tape measure a lot more easily than a scale!  But all the weight loss advice says that measuring is a better way to gauge loss.  Very confusing.  Probably the best way is a tight pair of pants.  :)

Probably the best way is a tight pair of pants.

But nonstretchy :)

That's what I'm really going with. Weight is too meaningless. When I can put certain clothes on again, and when others are simply comfier/looser/roomier, I know I'm on track. I've owned the same small set of clothes for quite a few years. Four items consistently tell me where I'm at: "time to let some size go" or "good to go, carry on."

Waist is better than weight in that it varies less (proportionally) with water-weight and it varies in the right way with body composition (which is what we're usually actually after.) If you're building muscle and losing fat, the scale may tell you you're going backwards whereas the measuring tape will tell you you're doing great.

Clothes are even better, as Joon says, but clothes won't give you numbers to play with. Dealbreaker for me :-)

I'm feeling really grateful for past experience. Now I know the following mean nothing in relation to health or weight:
*what size I feel like in my body
*what displays on the scale
*what my eyes see in the mirror.

In my mid 20's I dropped from 220 lbs to 155 lbs. over the course of about 2 years.   I can say that the above is certainly true when it comes to smaller fluctuations of a few pounds plus or minus.

I held steady around 155 for a few years, but over the last couple I've gradually crept up to where I am now.  As my weight has crept up, so have my blood pressure and cholesterol, and I'm starting to see some very early signs of insulin resistance.  I don't have the stamina or the self confidence I did when I was smaller. On a larger scale, weight matters.

Sadly, I know I have to be a bit obsessive to lose weight. I'm naturally a procrastinator and "moderation" easily turns into " I'll eat right and work out tomorrow" for me.

I'm interested in this measurement idea, since it's better than just weight in many ways, but I feel like trying to always measure the exact same spot would drive me nuts. My fitness pal has a place to track measurements, maybe I'll try that too.

Ah, yes, thank you for this clarification, neophyte. Yes, I was referring to those fluctuations of 1-3 pounds while we're following our plan. Weight can most definitely be one important health indicator, I agree.

Ai. Eleven hours and free food is a deadly combo. (Putting free food in front of a Mustachian is really not fair!)

But if you pulled off the 220 -> 155 feat, you can pull off this one. Back into the fray! (Hopefully after a good long restorative sleep!)

I lost 2 lbs somehow, despite barely getting in workouts or tracking food. Maybe the tracking makes me feel hungrier because I think about food more? I might just be dehydrated too. Last two nights of sleep have been a little better so now I can maybe focus on health a little more.

Hey, welcome MrsWolfeRN and Greyweld!

Wednesday morning is weekly averages day for me. March looks like this so far:

February 28: 170.2 lbs, 37.9"
March 7:       169.2 lbs, 37.7"
March 14:     168.2 lbs, 37.5"

Just squeaked in: absurdly low numbers this morning. I think I've got portion creep going at dinner: I'm going to have to go portion Nazi for a bit, and make sure that my 1/3 lb of burger is actually 1/3 lb. I hate weighing food, but I really can't trust myself to estimate properly when I'm hungry.

Weighted in this morning

March 5th - 129.4
March 9th - 128.8
March 14th - 127.4
End of March goal - 125.4
2/4 lbs

Half way there! This blizzard kept me from my run yesterday but I'm hoping going out tonight to make up for it!

I'm just going to start today because I totally forgot yesterday was 3/1.....

I had some good days (fasted 36 hours) and some bad days. (I kind of think birthdays don't really count as cheating).  The scale read 143 today, so I'll take it!  The next two weeks have nothing exciting in them, so I'm hoping to be way down. (St. Pats has cabbage in it, so you can make that pretty low cal.)

3/15/18 141 - I am liking the accountability. I haven't been as good about the exercise piece, so I'm going to work on that for the rest of the month.

I think I might need to cut back on calories or add some exercise.  It's mid-month and now that my lady business is over, the scale is barely budging in the down direction.  If I want to meet my goal, I need to hustle for the next couple of weeks.

For calorie cutting, I know that I need to add more veggies, but can I say that I get tired of all the prep?  My fave is kale, but it's a hassle - washing it thoroughly to remove all the sand/dirt, chopping, steaming.  And then it has the gall to shrink down in cooking so that you have to do this everyday!  :)

Exercise - I've been lazy.  No two ways about it.  I need to start my 30-Day Shred back up.  Anyone interested in doing a buddy system for exercise?  I think accountability and public embarrassment would help me.  :)

I'm 100% shortcutting on the veggies -almost all bought frozen currently, including kale and other leafy greens. This is largely due to the quantity, quality, cost, and environmental concerns re: fresh veggies available in a Canadian winter, but man, it's also awesome for the prep! :)

I can't do everything, and pre-prepped veggies (frozen or otherwise) is a place I give myself some help.

I'm at 172.6,  down another 0.4 lbs (though that's within the margin of error for my scale) today for a total loss of 1.4 lbs out of a goal of 5.  I was hoping for a bigger loss this week and I'm discouraged.  Thought about throwing in the towel this morning, but I'm really interested in collecting the data on this.  I averaged 1469 calories (1236-1772) and 10,280 steps a day (3773-15,678) for the week.  I know about 1200-1400 calories is weight loss range for me and 1400-1600 is maintenance.  I'm not surprised by the lack of progress from a data perspective, but based on my hunger levels I would have expected more.

For me the data makes all the difference. And that's why I like tracking the waist measurements too: often when one of the numbers is confounding the other one is reassuring. It's only when they both give you bad news for several days straight that you have to think about stepping it up. (Stepping it down? Whatever.)

The hunger's a weird thing -- for me it doesn't track very well with the weight loss. I'm at the end of a long haul of losing, 222 last May, 168 now, aiming for a pound a week, and I've only been really hungry -- I mean, all-day hungry -- a couple times. Both times I was thinking "maybe I just need to level off for a bit," but then both times it just went away again.

I am wondering about keeping the motivation up for long term maintenance, like you're doing. For me now it's just so exciting, because I haven't weighed this little in... what, forty-five years? So I've got this brand new body. But a couple years from now, when I drift up, it'll just be the same old body I'm trying to get back to... it must be harder to generate the enthusiasm.

I'm still hanging in there, my weekly average was 3 lbs above goal, so I am down 2 lbs for March. I'm not sure how because I haven't been getting many workouts in or tracking my food. On the bright side, baby has been sleeping better the past few nights so I feel healthier.

Congratulations on your weight loss! That's a fantastic accomplishment. I feel like I'm doing penance for not keeping up with maintenance at this point.  It's really not as exciting as losing the first time was. The first time I hit the 170 or so, I was over the moon. I hadn't seen that since middle school! And everytime I saw a lower number it upped my motivation.  I did really well for a few years and it honestly wasn't that difficult for me. I think in order to lose large amounts of weight you really adapt to the lifestyle changes and if you continue in that vein, you can do pretty well.  Over the years where I was successful I weighed myself regularly and if I got outside of my 155-160 range, I'd reign myself back in for a few weeks and be back on track.  Remembering how hard it was to lose in the first place kept me motivated not to gain it back. I can pretty much tell you exactly where the extra weight I'm trying to get rid of now came from, and it's mostly not long term "lifestyle inflation" if you will. Five-7 lbs are due to the breakup of a long term relationship, and the rest were accumulated at a rate of about 2-3 lbs per year during the annual Thanksgiving-New Year's eating orgy. I usually gain about 8 lbs around Christmas, and then lose 5 in January. Keep that up for a couple years though, and it adds up. Don't drift up, it's not worth it.

As an aside I really like the "down dog" yoga app.  Every time I use the app I give myself a mental pat on the back for saving $15-$20 by not paying for a class.

Our data are so comparable, though I've lost a bit more this month (could be a lucky fluke). I started at 175.5 a couple of days before 3/1 and was at 171.3 this morning. So 4.2 pounds in a touch more than 3 weeks. Average calories are a little lower than yours (1357), steps a bit lower (5309).  Some of those steps are cardio (dance), plus averaging 20 flights of stairs a day. I shoot for a 40-30-30 but probably end up more like 40-35-25.  It's a large amount of fat (full dairy like greek yogurt, avocado, coconut oil, nuts) and I find that occasionally I have to eat extra at the end of the day because I'm only at 1000 and pretty satisfied.  I also haven't been drinking at all for five weeks, which made dropping calories (and probably pounds) much easier.

I've been pretty obsessive about the tracking for this challenge--weighing and measuring and counting everything. Eating the same foods frequently helps make that easier (e.g., oatmeal with protein powder and a banana almost every morning).  I do the think the high fat content helps prevent the crazy hunger.

I think it also makes a big difference where you are in your weight loss process.  I've really begun in earnest with this challenge, so I was ambitious with my goal knowing it's always easier the first several weeks.  In April I'll pick 4 pounds, because 1# a week is more realistic based on past experience.

And, ultimately down is down, right?  It's a marathon not a sprint.

I was so stoked about myself last week. My birthday, the office had a little party, lots of devastatingly good pastry, and -- this is the killer -- the tradition of the office is that the birthday person TAKES THE LEFTOVERS HOME. And, this being an office full of slender women, there actually are serious, delicious leftovers. So at the party I ate sociably but moderately, I took the leftovers home, set them on the table where they sat beckoning to me for a couple hours, and when my wife got home from work I delegated getting rid of them to her. Leftovers gone, birthday over, whole incident done, still on track. (True, my wife will be a couple pounds up this week, but hey. Not my bailiwick.)

If this is going to work longterm, I need to be able to do the food celebration thing: there's just no getting around that.

I was delighted to see today that the scale showed 10 pounds less than Feb 15th. All quite effortlessly, without hunger or trouble or counting or weighing, etc. This was based on my Lenten commitment to a specific eating plan, which I'll be continuing until Maundy Thursday or something.

Again, not putting much focus on the scale itself, but it was nice to see this, especially after it bounced up for my period. When I go to put on clothes I finally bought a few months ago, the difference is clear. I'm at my very comfy weight/size again.

Shortly, my kid and I are going to trial working on gym equipment at the same time. That sounds fun to me :)   This of course may also increase weight, and that's okay!

I was delighted to see today that the scale showed 10 pounds less than Feb 15th. All quite effortlessly, without hunger or trouble or counting or weighing, etc. This was based on my Lenten commitment to a specific eating plan, which I'll be continuing until Maundy Thursday or something.

Awesome both of you!

I went a bit nuts last night and way overate, but I saw a loss on the scale this morning despite that.  Maybe I'm finally due to get off this plateau if I can keep on track. I've hit my calorie goal for the day already and it's not even 1 pm.  I'm hoping veggies and decaf tea will be enough to keep me going for the rest of the day.

Found out yesterday that baby is apparently very comfy on the inside and not sure about vacating yet so my "weight loss" goal might need to be moved to April.

March 1 (37 weeks pregnant) = 217.4 lbs
March 8 (38 weeks pregnant) = 214.6 lbs
March 20 (almost 40 weeks pregnant) = 213.7 lbs

It does appear that my weight is decreasing, I think this is all due to healthier lunch options and fluids/water weight, mostly fluids/water weight.

Wednesday weekly averages:

February 28: 170.2 lbs, 37.9"
March 7:       169.2 lbs, 37.7"
March 14:     168.2 lbs, 37.5"
March 21:     167.4 lbs, 37.3"

It's going to be a close-run thing! I cut my ice cream ration in half this week. Desperate times.

Sadly, no. I didn't leave work until 10pm and I definitely had at least 1 more doughnut and a few pieces of candy before I went home. Then I skipped my walk home and took the bus and passed out as soon as I got home so I skipped my workout too.

Fortunately today is a snow day so I am doing much better! I should hit both my calorie and workout goals today!

March 5th - 129.4
March 9th - 128.8
March 14th - 127.4
March 23rd - 128.0
End of March goal - 125.4
1.4/4 lbs

Went the wrong way this week but hoping this is bloating due to the time of month. I've been running 3 times a week and eating pretty well.

I wouldn't have made it either! If I don't have an end-of-workday meal in sight, I go to pieces. Do your hours let up at some point? It sounds pretty punishing.

Hello everyone!  How y'all doing?

We have one week left on this challenge and I hope everyone is making progress on achieving their goal.  My weight is exactly where I was on March 1st.  But I've decided to look at this as a data gathering exercise thanks to the conversations here about it.  I haven't really changed anything, no reduction in calories or increase in exercise.  I meant to, but other things have been keeping me occupied and I've just been too tired to take it on.

Congrats to those of you who are making good progress!

And for those of us who are not - hang in there!  We'll continue doing our best and then start fresh in April.

We'll continue doing our best and then start fresh in April.

I so adore this approach! Thanks a million for thinking this one up, jane x! So manageable, so doable. Starting fresh regularly rocks.

I'm also grateful for fresh start because my eating commitment ends right around end of March, and I've been wondering what I'll set out for April to stay on track. I did this month for other reasons, but the effects are so wonderful, I'd like to come up with some version for April. (Also my whole goal specific to this thread was just not to gorge on starches at my mom's house. She got sick so I didn't get to visit her in March after all, but hopefully next month so will still need the support.)

I'm just going to start today because I totally forgot yesterday was 3/1.....

3/24/18 141.3 - Wrong direction. I blame Maggianos and their amazing pasta.  I will try to be better on this Spring Break vacation than I was in Hawaii.  I don't like the flabby belly I see in the mirror....

I have had PMS and then the lady herself (aunt flow) for the entire last 2 weeks. I gain three lbs every month during this time so hoping to the end the month where I started. Here’s hoping for a better April.

I'm at 171.6 today, down 1 lb for the week (down 2.4 for the month,*sigh*)  But I've been all over the place this week and I have no idea how accurate that is.  Is it a temporary bump from eating 2600+ calories Friday or a temporary low from eating 600 yesterday? I'm overthinking this!

Five lbs isn't going to happen at this point, but this week's goal is to be consistent and do my best for the last week of March!  Maybe with luck+ effort I'll be at 4 lbs for the month. If I can do that and the achieve a 5 lb loss in both April and May, I could be back to a normal BMI by June!

Start (2/26): 175.5
3/5: 174
3/12: 173.2
3/19: 171.3
3/26: 170.7

Down 4.8 pounds total.  Goal was 6, though I'd be pretty happy with 5.6.  My motivation for the month has been focused on getting back into the 160s, which hasn't happened for years.  My next weigh in is on Monday, April 2 at which point I'll set my April goal.  Best of luck everyone on the last few days of March!

March 14th - 127.4
March 23rd - 128.0
March 26th - 127.0
End of March goal - 125.4
2.4/4 lbs

Happy to see the scale this morning. Not sure if I'll hit the 4 lbs goal but hoping to get fairly close. I'm continuing to run about 3 times a week which is a big help.

I hope this challenge will be repeated for April. I like the shorter monthly challenges.

I started the month by tracking my calories for a week which was an eye opener. It is worth doing every once in a while to see what you are actually consuming.   So far I am down 6 pounds for the month.

So...I started the month at 121 and was hoping to get to 118 - which is my goal.  To be hones, I was really happy to be at 121 (down from the 133 I've been hovering around for years).  Tried low carb for the first time ever and it made all the difference.  Until yesterday, I had lost no weight this month - but I didn't really care because I was happy.  Weighed myself yesterday, and am down to 119.  Haven't changed anything!  I am 1 pound away from my goal!  I'm kind of shocked - I'm a 48 yr old woman near my HS weight!  Never thought this would happen.

I spent the first part of the month going the wrong way.  Then the batteries in my scale went out.  Using the scale at work, I think I am about a pound down from when I started the month.  So, uh, I lost the 5 pound I gained at the beginning of the month.  Hmm, not quite where I worked to be.  A few days left and I should have new batteries today!

I'm pretty much flat, maybe down 1/2 a pound. I've continued to increase my veggie intake, reduce my carb intake, & do really well at working out (24 workouts so far this month). So, I feel great about that. But, obviously my calories need some work given all that working out & no progress. I had a couple of really challenging weeks with work (full weeks with sitting in a chair for 10+ hours & then having catered food for 3 meals/day). I still think I can see a 1lb loss by the end of the month.

I know i'm doing all of the right things, but need to reduce my calories by probably 200/day to see real progress on the weight loss side. I can see/feel muscle toning, which is great.

I've read that the single most effective weight-loss intervention, across the board, and regardless of what else people do, is keeping a food journal / tracking calories. It's really hard to eat less if you don't know how much you're eating in the first place.

I did lose another 1lb so that makes 3 total so far this month.  The month isn't over and I suspect I will lose another one by the end of it.  Am anxious to see where I will fall at the end of the month.  Normalizing what I eat has been a journey.  So, I consider this my trial month and would be super happy with 4 real lbs lost.

1/1/18 - 165
3/27/18 - 162

I totally agree.  I don't have the patients to track my food intake all the time but it is worth doing periodically to get keep myself on track.  I have lost 20 pounds so far and I need to lose another 50 to 60 pounds.

This is killer for me. Especially because people like to bring a lot of junk food to share around here. When I'm really on top of things and know it's going to be a bad day at work, I try to bring a big container of carrots and celery and maybe some fresh fruit with me. I also got a box of protein bars and stuck it in my desk yesterday. I'm hoping that will help keep me out of the doughnuts on the unanticipated rough days.

As of today I am down another bit -- so 3 1/2 so far.
I have had sugar about 7 of the last 14 days so not optimistic to get to the final goal of 4 lbs for the month but still seeing numbers on the scale that I would consider long lost friends :)

Now to get more sleep! I definitely have more cravings and give in more often and have more trouble stopping sugar consumption when I'm tired. And thirsty--although that should be easier to fix.

Totally agree. We've had performance reviews, a big external conference, and a team offsite where there were dinner events every night for a week. The last two weeks were really tough. I'm slowly getting my groove back, and have a "no treats at work" rule that i follow 95% of the time. We get free fruit & vegetables at work, so my main mantra is, if it's not fruit or vegetables, it's not a snack. I largely stick to that, but occasionally get drawn in to a bowl of cereal if my lunch was particularly unappealing.

God, I only work my desk job 4 hours per day or so, and even so I always bring a banana and little tupperware thingy of almonds (circa 20 of them -- I used to actually count! but now I can just eye them). If it ain't fat or protein, my body doesn't believe it's food: fruit & veggies don't move the "hungry" needle at all. And hungry + stressed + junk opportunity = caving, for me. Every time. Humiliating but true.

This came at a perfect time--have had two days of junky eating and logged on here for some motivation to get out of the slump so a friendly race or losing buddy may be just the thing.  I'm guessing I can probably hit about a pound a week on average so June's probably realistic for me too, but let's shoot for May 31 just to be bold :)

Our last day in March!

It's gone by fast and I've enjoyed having this thread to keep me from becoming despondent when the scale REFUSED to budge all month long!  :)  I'm looking forward to starting a fresh new challenge tomorrow.  Also looking forward to seeing how everyone did.  I hope some of you were more successful than me.

I'll be updating everyone's achievements as you report them in and then posting a group % of goal achieved.

I'll also be adding inches to the April challenge.  So if you want to set a goal in inches as well, let me know when you sign up.

Cheers to everyone for completing the challenge!

My official weigh-in this morning is 169.5!  I'm not sure how that happened as I didn't do anything incredible over the last few days.  That puts me at 4.5 lbs/ 5 lb goal.

I'm expecting to see a bit of a bounce back up over the next couple of days but I'm super excited to be under 170!  My April goal will be another 5 lbs.  Anything under 160 puts me in the healthy BMI range. I'd love to hit that by summer.

So, good things are happening & I'll take that. I know I need to continued to drive my calories/day down by about another 100 calories. And, bump up my running.

...continuing to notice changes in my strength & toning, and am able to wear a couple of pair of jeans that were previously too tight. So, good things are happening & I'll take that.

Nice :)

And yeah, sweet graphs, neophyte! (I think I would enjoy it being graphed, maybe I'll do that.)

I completely dropped the ball in keeping up with this thread in March, but I just wanted to come by to say that I clocked in at 139 even at the end of the month. I'll take the 1.8 lb loss even though it fell far short of my 6 lb goal. Going to stop by the April thread now!

Baby arrived 3/23 and I haven't had a chance to log on or check my weight. Just got on the scale (after dinner) and...

April 2nd = 192.8 lbs

I was away last weekend so didn't get to post (or weight in actually) on the 31st. Anyway my weight as of yesterday was 127 lbs. Lost a total of 2.4 lbs for the month. I'm moving on to the April challenge :)

I've updated the roster with the results that have been reported so far for March.  A few of you reported in with your new weight, but I need the results in lbs lost in order to log it in.

I hope we get more results - it would be fun to see how we did as a group.

After staying put all month, the scale gave me a 1 lb loss at the end of the month.  I will happily take it.

And.... @Slow&Steady had her baby!!!  A huge congratulations to her, baby, and family.

I didn’t mark my starting weight March 1st, so don’t know. However I let go of 10 Feb 15 to late March, so let’s put me down for 3 :)      (For April I did record starting weight, so I will participate better this month!)

I'm just going to start today because I totally forgot yesterday was 3/1.....

3/24/18 141.3 - Wrong direction. I blame Maggianos and their amazing pasta.  I will try to be better on this Spring Break vacation than I was in Hawaii.  I don't like the flabby belly I see in the mirror....
4/5/18 142.2 - Bad. Just bad. I am recommitted to be in the 130's by the end of April...

It looks like I never gave my final loss for March. I was down 3lbs. So not quite my goal but still. I'm continuing the journey on the April challenge.....
Thanks for getting this challenge organized; it was very helpful.
