I'm totally in for Losing Weight in 2018!!!

As for breakfast - my default is half a cup of plain yogurt + 1/2 cup of granola. I don't add much extra because...calories. I usually feel satisfied until lunchtime although lately I've still been hungry. But I think that's a whole expanded my stomach again thing. Check out www.skinnytaste.com for really good recipes with calorie counts in them.

I also often do 2 slices of sprouted grain bread, a smidgen of nutella (as little as I can get away with so about 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon) and a banana. I make it an open faced sandwich as that makes me feel like I'm eating more food. I'd suggest cutting back on the jam and seeing ways to add protein to your breakfast.

My breakfast is pretty much the same every day. I have 1 egg plus 1 egg white scrambled, and 1/2 cup of fruit smoothie, just to get some fruit in me but keep the calories down. That's it. I think of breakfast as a utility meal (ie. not for filling me up), to jump start my metabolism. If I didn't believe it did that (for me it really does), I would just skip it and eat lunch.

I have not been posting here yet, but since circa August 2016 I am down from 206 to 168 (38 lbs.).  Male, late 40s, 5'11.  First, I quit drinking, which eliminated all those empty carbs/calories in beer.  Second, I went ketogenic, which is under 20 g carbs per day.  Third, I did some intermittent fasting last spring, namely two to three 36-hour fasts per week.  This fall I have been doing warrior fasting, which is essentially one meal a day, on the weekdays.  Waistline is back down to 36 inches.

I am a breakfast skipper myself. I don't like breakfast food and felt like I was wasting 300 calories in the morning. If I ate breakfast then I would have to cut either a morning snack (and eating breakfast made me ravenous!) or forgo wine or carbs with my dinner (both things I LOVE). So I gave up the thing I didn't like :)

One of my favorite things about this thread has been seeing how everyone does something different - I have tried little bits of everyone's strategies and I love it!

Breakfast skipping aside - if I'm starving when I wake up I go with a piece of toast with peanut butter on it.

Weekly-ish Weigh-In:

Start weight: 155.4     Last week's weight: 142.6      Current weight: 142.8

Ending weights for each month:
Feb: 155.4 lbs
March :150.2
April: 147.2
May: 144
June: 144.6
July: 146
August: 145
September: 144

I've had three weeks in a row that have ended in the 142 range. I declare it official that I lost at least a pound in October! If I can keep it through Thanksgiving I'll be quite proud.

A down note (or maybe not) - my husband mentioned that he couldn't really tell that I'd lost weight since last winter.  He said it in a nice way like "really?! well I always think you look amazing" - but still. I've been busting my butt (literally) for the last 10 months and DH can't tell a difference. I suspect this has to do with my post-babies tummy. That thing will never be the same :) ahh well.

Onward and downward!

Sunday am weigh in - 133lbs.  Ate a lot of really good food last night but since I was hosting, didn't drink a lot of wine.
I am being super vigilant 90% of the time and then slipping up badly the remaining 10%.  So my plan is to work hard on increasing the veg intake and adding in some walks on those days that there is potential for sweet snacking.
Starbright - I think your husband probably sees you as he did when he met you long before babies and fell in love.  Don't be too harsh on your image of yourself and celebrate - you are losing weight in a very healthful consistent way.  Amazing.

That's an end weight of 126. It's pretty nice out and I'm jogging 4 miles a day in addition to walking another 4.
I'm getting close enough to goal that I am loosening the reins on eating.  Not sure what my maintenance regime should look like.  I am debating between adding more to my daily calories, one fruit one nut two breads, or adding more room for occasional junk and social eating.  Week 35, no loss, was a result of 3 social events where I ate both variety and quantity but stuck to my weight loss habits the rest of the time.

@Runrooster That is absolutely amazing! I am in awe.

@Starbright I agree with Frugal Lizard. 10 lbs lost does show - but obviously, he's simply not noticed as you've added the 10 lbs :) :)

As for me - I clocked in at 136.4 lbs this morning. One step forward, 2 steps back. I'm still about the same weight I was 2 months ago *sigh*. Especially I successfully hit 130 lbs just 3 months ago :( Oh well - I'm fighting the upward creep. I do need to lose a few pounds before the holidays though! My general meals are good - it's all the stupid snacking in between. I must cut out the snacking. 1-2x a day is ok...right now I am snacking 3-4 x a day, which is not good.

On the positive side, I'm back on my bike again. Yesterday I biked to work and then decided to repeat the 50 min round trip to go home for lunch (and get the extra workout). My DH said I was crazy because it was a cold and windy day. But it actually felt like quite nice weather on my bike (I did bundle up). It was windy, but it wasn't super strong winds so I just went slow and steady.

Lots more eating out ahead to navigate. Going out for dinner with DH on Wednesday and then DD and I will be having a free dinner of sandwiches on Thursday at an event. This weekend, DH and I are going out of town with another couple so we'll be eating out all weekend.

Rockstache - I know it frustrating when we bounce back up - but you've lost/kept off most of the weight for almost two years - that is awesome!

Thanks StarBright! It IS hard to see the positive sometimes. I am trying to focus on the fact that the bounce up happened quickly, and if I STOP IT NOW, I can do so gradually and I won't have to slog through it all over again from the beginning. The holidays are coming and that can be tough, but I'm hoping to indulge myself on the few days that we have plans, and keep the rest of the days surrounding the holidays on my normal routine.

You've done great this year! I love how you post the end of the month weight. It's a total psychological thing obviously, but it seems to me like a good trick.

@rockstache I feel your frustration. And as per usual - my numbers are somewhat similar to yours although I do swing upwards and downwards more wildly than you do. I clocked in at 136 this morning. Which is better than the 137 not too long ago!

I confess I am a bit worried about the holidays. Last year I piled on 10 lbs from Nov - Dec that took me half a year to shed. I'm starting out a solid 6 lbs higher than last year at this time AND less focused so I do worry. I plan to do my best to keep the snacking under control. My regular meals are not usually all that bad - it's the multiple snacks per day that are doing me in. Oh and more vegetables would also be a good thing :)

On the positive side, I was away on a weekend trip from Friday - Sunday. I had planned to work out, but that kept getting nixed. We also ate quite a fair bit. Overall though, I kept my overeating on the more reasonable side of things. Even after I pigged out on chicken wings on Monday, I've still managed to bounce back to my pre-weekend weight on Wednesday.

I'd REALLY like to level out at about 130 lbs. I've hit it twice now, but just need to be able to hang out there. I think I need to post here more often instead of hiding from this thread.

@starbright VERY nice downward trend!!!

Weight Log
* My monthly fitness anniversary is around the 6th of every month.
12/6/16  ~265
1/7/17      256.4
2/3/17      251.6
3/10/17    242.2
4/7/17      235.8
5/4/17      230.0 (-5.8)
6/12/17    227.2 (-2.8)
7/8/17      219.6 (-7.6)
8/7/17      215.2 (-4.4)
10/6/17    208.8 (-6.4)
11/8/2017 203.8 (-5)

Total Loss: 62.8 lbs
Total Percent: 23.7%

I have kept mostly on plan this last month, despite a lot of life happening + family celebrations. I think the fact that I am so close to 200 AND I really want to hit it before the end of the year is helping me keep on track. After I hit it I will take another maintenance break, but for now I am pushing onward unless I just stall out.

Continued weight loss in the holiday season is likely to be difficult, but I really want it to happen so I will see how it goes. Thanksgiving should be OK because we are going to my sister's and she is currently also watching what she eats. I expect to have more difficulty with the office candy and family celebrations around Christmas.

This week I have had several walks, tracked my food, ate prepped food from the week and in general stayed mostly on plan. However, I am struggling to hit weight loss calories on days where it is too cold or dark to walk outside after work. We have no gyms withing 30 minutes of our house, so when those days I happen I can either do the stationary bike in the garage or some other kind of home work out.

I also keep ending up around 1900 calories when I am aiming to eat closer to 1800. 1850-1900 was my previous target and so my body and mind must be accustomed to it. I need to figure out how to tweak my day to cut out the extra 50-100 calories - basically where do I want to take it from within my daily allotment.

I've been gone from this thread for months.  Haven't read everything.

Had lunch with my partner's mom last week and she said something that's been resonating with me.  English is not her first language. She was talking about cutting out caffeine and only drinking herbal teas and feeling so much better after a long day and later said, "I want to change my weight."

change vs lose.  active vs passive.  Changed vs lost. intentionall vs accidental.

All that rolling around in my brain right now.

I think it is a really good way of describing it. We are trying to change our weight permanently. Working on making a real and lasting change to way we approach and consume food.

Change. It's a good thing.

Remind me again tomorrow when I think I have to eat multiples of some favourite treat instead of being Content with one reasonable portion.

I thought I had beaten my winter urge to eat - NOPE!

A random health scare last week (everything is okay - Doc just freaked me out) and DH being out of town for an extended period led to a week of comfort eating.

I'm up a pound this week - 143.

I'm having a salad for dinner tonight, come hell or high water!

Been feeling like I have been reasonable, but in reality I have been eating much more than I should. I have been indulging cravings for sweets every single day.

Was horrified by the scale this morning - 139.8. Dang it! I have put on those stupid 10 lbs yet again. This will be my 3rd round at losing this same 10 lbs.

It is time to get serious. No more eating extra because DH is. No more snacking just because I can. No more being ridiculous because I think I am going for a bike ride.

I am not cutting out every indulgence - the holidays are coming after all :) And sometimes (like last Friday), a body just needs chocolate to make it through a day. But in general, I need to get smarter and a whole lot more disciplined. I was full enough last night but kept eating and eating and eating.

Also, been eating too much comfort food and concerned how little veggies I am eating. I don't naturally like veggies so I usually have to push myself to up my intake. Today, I had a banana for breakfast and will be having a yummy salad for lunch. I have an apple in the fridge for dessert/snack.

elaine amj -- This may be obvious advice.

Be kind towards yourself. Otherwise things will only get more difficult. Just make only one small change today, and make it stick this week. Winter is here and it is harder to get out and be more active.

Good luck.

Elaine amj - next time you see a farm stand or market get yourself some really tasty local apples - 5 or 10 pounds.  They are way tastier than most grocery store apples and they are so crunchy and delicious - they meet the treat need.
You have a lot on your metaphorical plate - don't beat yourself up over your dinner plate.

@rpr You're right. And weight loss is always so much easier when I am not beating myself up.

@frugal lizard I do have a lot on my plate. Just so annoying that's this part of my life is also suffering for it. Ugh. Will take your advice to go slowly though. This week's project is to increase my vegetable intake.

On the good side, I woke up yesterday morning feeling really rested for the first time in a long time. It was truly wonderful to feel really awake and not groggy and sleepy. I have been making an effort to catch up on sleep and it's paying off. And of course, yesterday was planned as a fun day (and it sure was!) so that must have helped too lol.

Good for you. Sleep is crucial.

I didn't go hog-wild over Thanksgiving but I didn't practice portion control either. Actually, it's probably the first time in more than a month that I ate until I was full, rather than stopping while still hungry. It felt good. Too good. :(

I also violated my two-glasses-of-wine-per-week rule. Big time. And ate white flour and sugar.

I've lost 9 lbs in about a month and a half, but was afraid to do the weekly weigh-in on Saturday due to Thanksgiving overindulgence, so I skipped it. I'm sure I gained. But - I can get into my jeans again! Tighter than they were, but they don't look obscene and I don't have as much muffin-top blupping over the waistband.

I am having a really hard time going back to the portion control this week. I am Always Hungry and I'm finding it hard to stop when I've finished my portion. (The time of the month certainly does not help; I always sleep horribly during my period and I find that makes me much hungrier.) I did buy some herbal tea from Trader Joe's that I really like so I've been drinking that in the evenings to try to feel more full. And drinking more water, though I find that really hard when it's so cold out.

It is nice out today (well, for Chicago in late November, haha) so I am going to make a point of taking a long walk at lunch. I miss doing that.

That's an end weight of 123.  I'm pretty happy with the maintain last week as it includes one weekend guest, one Thanksgiving dinner, two wedding receptions, and no self control.  I'm mostly hoping to maintain over the holidays, though I won't be surprised if I bounce up a few pounds. Right now I'm trying to keep my daily eating and exercise at weight loss level, to counteract weekend events and missed exercise.

I am still holding steady - even though I keep having the desire to snack ALL THE TIME - this morning I was at 134.
I am  hoping if I can keep hovering around this weight until the beginning of January, then I will have avoided the winter padding that got me last year.

Me Too Frugal Lizard!

I managed to hit a new low the day before Thanksgiving (141), bounced up to 144 and have gotten back down to where I'm fluctuating between 141-143.

I think it has to do with the sodium I'm getting from extra holiday events.

I am CONSTANTLY hungry. I'm actually thinking of trying HUEL just because it is supposed to be so filling. If I can make myself full then maybe I won't want to snack.

I have actually eaten six clementines and like 8 cups of tea today.

I got on the scales this morning after a weekend of socializing and baking and just plain having a good time but with a self-check - do I really need this, will I still feel good if I eat this?
And I am still hovering just below 134.
I have been trying to fit in walking to things whenever I can.  If it is impossible to walk - I park further from my destination so that I have to walk even just a little - or push that grocery cart through the slush just a little further.  Every little bit helps.

I bounced up to 146 after work travel/holiday party (sodium, meat and booze) last week and am working my way down again. I'll probably hit 141 the day before I leave for Christmas travel :) But I figure if I let myself eat whatever I want for a week and then spend the next couple of weeks losing it again, I'll still be ahead of the game when it comes to the new year.

Usually I let myself have a food free for all between Thanksgiving and New Years. This year I'm giving myself the holidays/trips themselves and then trying to get myself back on track.

My mom actually bought me Huel for Christmas so I'm going to be working it into my food this week. My plan is to eat a piece of fruit when I'm getting the snacking urge, then some protein if I'm still ravenous and if fruit and protein doesn't work I'm going to give myself a glass of Huel.

We'll see if it works and if it gets me through my insane need to snack in winter

I got on the scale this morning and EGADS it said 136.5.  I nearly started to cry because I was over that magical threshold that I set of 135.  In the next moment I thought well - must do some serious snow shoveling this weekend and get it together.  So I shoveled the driveway and then decided to re-weigh - before I got in the shower.  The scale was not zeroed.  So set it at zero, and low and behold, I am at 133.5.
I am still going to shovel the driveway as quickly as I can a couple of times and maybe even get on the rowing machine.  The longer days start now so technically I should have made it.

I'm grumpy because after a week of saying no to literally every holiday treat that was shoved into my face, saying no to booze, even saying no to eating until I'm satisfied - four ounces up. I know it's not a lot but I am really pissed off that I was starving all the time for the entire week and still gained.

I plan to bake over the holiday weekend, though. And have some wine. I will just have to undo the damage later. I am so sick of being hungry all the time that I could just scream. Also getting very sick of herbal tea, which is what I have in the evenings when I am starving. I bought a couple new flavors last night though so maybe that will help with the boredom.

Wellll I am up about 10lbs from my last weigh in. Lots of stress with a new job, moving and in general being tired of dieting. I am holding on about 8-10 lbs up from my lowest. Plan is to keep holding on and not self-sabotage through the holidays. Then we will move right after the holidays. Then, when I set up my life at new job and house, I will set myself up for success with health incorporated into the routine. Just have to hold on for a couple days longer.

Weight Log
12/6/16  ~265
1/7/17      256.4
2/3/17      251.6
3/10/17    242.2
4/7/17      235.8
5/4/17      230.0 (-5.8)
6/12/17    227.2 (-2.8)
7/8/17      219.6 (-7.6)
8/7/17      215.2 (-4.4)
10/6/17    208.8 (-6.4)
11/8/17 203.8 (-5)
12/22/17 213 (+9.2)

Tris -  I'm sipping peppermint tea right at this moment and hating it :) All I want is something warm and cheesy.

Right?? When it's cold out, my usual snacks of fruit or raw veg are completely unappealing to me because they're cold. I want comfort food. (and I don't like cooked vegetables unless they're in something - ugh, mushy and gross - so that doesn't work.) At least the tea is hot.

I bought an herbal tea yesterday called Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride. Spoiler alert, it does not taste like sugar cookies.

Folks...Its time to start a Losing Weight in 2018!!

After drowning my sorrows in food and gaining 14 pounds since August, I jumped back on the bandwagon last week and am actively losing weight through Christmas (while not depriving myself of treats or Christmas feasting).

Let's do this in 2018: https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/index.php?topic=83561.0

That's an end weight of 122.  I know there's a new thread but I wanted to finish 2017 here for completeness.  I probably will just be maintaining in 2018, though I wouldn't mind losing a few more pounds.  Just because I survived the holidays doesn't mean I'm out of the woods.  I gained one pound and am having a hard time with the unusual cold.  I'm being more sedentary even though exercise warms me up, and eating too much.  So maybe in three months I'll be needing to lose the winter blubber.
