Welcome, all!
- @LifeHappens hope you heal quickly! My back complains sometimes as well, but for me it's always because I've been neglecting my core. Take it easy and don't overdo!
- @LWTG skiing should totally count, and @robincanada skating too!
- @nvmama and @oneday hurray for new habits - an auspicious start to the decade.
- @Rosy and LifeHappens enjoy your lovely weather - for Florida we could do a Summer Stalwarts challenge :*)
- @Bumbles8 that's a great goal!
- @rachellynn99 good luck on your 1/2 marathon!
I also use MapMyRun to plan out routes if I don't want to bring my phone, but otherwise I use the free version of RunKeeper. I like the goofy voices (currently on the French accent, "oo la la you vere fast!")
Frugal tip #1 - you all probably know this, but you don't need data or wireless to use RunKeeper at least and presumably the others as well, because location is tracked independently. I turn data on temporarily if I get lost or turned around, but otherwise I leave it off and just upload my runs when I get home to the wireless, My other favorite app/website, which I do pay for because I've met the guy who does it mostly as a labor of love, is
CityStrides. It keeps track of what % of your town's streets you've run or walked. I find it super-motivating and it's led me to explore my area in new ways.
The dark is the biggest challenge for me too - I don't mind it too much once I'm out and my eyes adjust, but it's hard to drag myself out when I enjoy running in the light so much. %$&! work! Next January I hope to be FIREd and I won't need the challenge so much...
For those of us who get winter weather,
frugal tip #2: instead of Stabilicers etc., you can take an older pair of shoes and screw 6-10 1/4" hex-head pointy screws into each sole (helps to drill or punch a little pilot hole). Voila, for about 50 cents you can run on icy roads like it ain't no thing. (Not good for indoors so YMMV, but I find it much easier than putting the other kind on and it's so delightfully cheap!)
