January 2019 Goals
« on: December 23, 2018, 10:46:41 AM »
Starting to plan January goals - I like to have realistic goals so I don't fail!  This is my plan:

*Eat out of the pantry/freezer.  This should be pretty easy since I have a few things on hand already.  I want to stay under $50 at the grocery store for the month.  Fresh fruits/veggies will need to be purchased throughout the month but hopefully not much else.

*Treat myself to a lunch or two out - only using gift cards.  My boyfriend and I have a few GCs to use and that will be our treat for the month.

*Fully fund my Roth IRA.

*Create an updated budget for 2019.

Anyone else making plans for January?

@frugalkristen I like the idea of monthly goals.
Was just thinking this morning about a few of mine, will update if I think of more :)

*meditate minimum 20min/day

*keep phone in a small pouch/purse to avoid unnecessary checking and don't charge it at night in the bedroom
(sparked when I read that on average we now touch our phone around 150times/day)

*track spending

I want to jump start the year with a super frugal month. It's a 3 paycheck month for me, so I'd love to save as much as I can. I also have to get the suspension replaced in my (old) car, so that will be a painful $1800.00. My goal is to spend as little as possible aside from that big car service, so in February, it will be like it never happened!

Budget Goals:
Groceries- under $200.00
No Eating out/alcohol
Personal Care- Under $40.00
Misc- Under $60
Gas- Under $80.00 (have one big trip to the city I will have to make to take the GRE!!)

Personal Goals:
- Get back into the swing of my normal healthy eating post holidays. I've actually done great at not indulging too much in the constant junk food that is around me, but I usually am a bit stricter about sugar consumption than I've been the past couple of months.
- rest more. I have been pet sitting (my side job) almost constantly since November, and I need a break! It has been great to have the extra cash, but I want to take a month off and enjoy my quiet, simple life a little more.

I'm in!

- No desserts/sweets for the month (reset after the holiday indulgence)

- Eat from your pantry (and mostly freezer, in my case) challenge

- Get back into my exercise routine, going to my exercise class at least 10x in the month

What is your best time? Sub 20 minute isn't a walk in the park, especially if you are new to running. I'd suggest you are going to need a lot more than 500 miles to get there.

I also have a sub 20 min goal (eventually), but realistically from a best of 23:30 at the moment, I'm likely to only get down to ~22 this year.

You are right, I definitely may be optimistic. I don’t know a whole lot about running and as I mentioned, I’ve just been doing it for 6 months. I’m at about 24 minutes right now. I haven’t trained seriously and never ran more than maybe 12 miles/wk (though I easily could). I also have about 10-15 lbs I can drop for it.

I might be way off in my goal, but I’ll stick to it for now and see what happens when I have an actual training regimen in place.

I've had an interesting 2018 including 3 months overseas for DH's job and a change of jobs for me. As I didn't work for 6 months during, before and after the trip overseas and we had a couple of other overseas trips we didn't save much in 2018 apart from maxing out our pre-tax retirement accounts (superannuation) of $25k each including employer contributions which was about half of that, work share purchase plan for DH of approx $5k and $5k of VAS ETF's for me with my tax return. Ok $60k that is still a lot!

2019 goals:

1. Max out retirement accounts (Aus Superannuation) 25k each by June 2019 (For 2018-2019 financial yr)
2. Save my entire paycheck and live off DH's paycheck
3. Negotiate promotion at work or seek higher earning job of at least 10k/yr by June 2019 (This is a stretch goal)
4. Track all spending for January and work out what can be cut/minimised, I got a bit spendy pants with clothing purchases towards the end of 2018.
5. No clothing/shoes etc spend for January.

Non-money goals:

1. Exercise at least twice a week (class or bodyweight exercises, I quit my gym membership last year)

2. Investigate side hustle possibilities - January

My life has changed enormously in 2018, which was my first full business year as a self employed person. So for January, I‘m hoping to:

- Fill some of the last gaps in my schedule with clients.
- Invest in my ISA (UK tax free account) in order to hit the maximum allowance by April
- Fill up my emergency stash of about 3 months‘ living expenses - I depleted this to pay for a yearly train ticket which will save me £320 in 2019.
- Meet some more new people in London, as some old friends have moved away.

Last year’s monthly goals threads were a big help to me!  Focusing only on one month at a time has helped me identify what I need to do right away and helped me avoid procrastinating.

January 2019:
-Lose 8 lbs
-Save $2,300 to my home down payment fund
-Stick to my daily Bible reading plan
-eat lentil soup for lunch every day (easy tactic to save money and eat healthier)

I love reading everyone’s goals!  I’ll check back in later in the month.

Goals for January:
Write a journal entry every day
Cook a real dinner at least 3/week
Read 1 book/week

I recently read a book called “Atomic Habits” (add it to your list) and it mentioned the “habit” of starting to write journal entries. It mentioned starting very easy and slow so not to get burnt out and to be excited to journal. Even as much as just doing 1 sentence a day and slowly building over time.

I had a great aunt who filled probably 100+ journals all filling the space above the cabinets in her kitchen. You could ask her about historical events, like WWII, and she could go right to the journal for that era and look back on her thoughts that day. Truly amazing.

use2betrix, that story about your great aunt is amazing! I should see if I can find copies of my deceased relative's journals - my grandma is big on genealogy, so she probably has some floating around her house. I placed a hold on Atomic Habits at the library - thanks for the suggestion!

Going to keep it pretty simple for January:

Keep track of all spending
Rein in spending that got out of control the past few months
Lose at least 5 pounds
Put $625 towards IRA (catch-up 2018) Already completed
Consume zero beer
List at least 5 items for sale on eBay
Organize pile of papers currently sitting on my desk

Well January is not going so well. My cat had to be taken to the vet and she is currently staying there getting testing/treatment for Kidney infection (or potentially Kidney Failure) I had to put a $2k deposit down for treatment. Mr Pug will split this with me thankfully but my budget is still shot for the month.

1. Stick to budget ($2,105) - Not happening
2. Pay down SL by $1,400 - Will most likely be $1K
3. Save $340 in various accounts - Still planning on hitting this
4. Increase Net-worth by $3K - Probably closer to $2k but still a nice increase
5. Save $1K in 401K - Will be $1,100 as I increased my contribution (will go up more next month too)
6. Finish reading "Childbirth without Fear", "The Stand", and "Lady of the River" - Still working on these. I've had zero interest in reading this month
7. Do yoga 2x a week - Just once a week so far but should get at least 2 yoga sessions in this week
8. Go to the gym 2x a week - big zero so far, thankfully my work pays for my membership!
9. Hit 10K steps a day (20+ days) - 1 day so far!!!! yikes better step on it, I basically need to hit 10k every day remaining this month
10. Have 10 no spend days (or under $5 spending) - 2 days so far not bad, I hope to actually get more no spend days so I can off set this vet bill

I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty, haypug, and I hope that she feels better very soon (and that you and Mr Pug are holding up okay).

Progress so far:

1. On track for steps.
2. Exercised three times last week!
3. Haven't been paid yet this month, so no progress on savings for the month.
4. Finished a pre-2019 book last night!
5. No progress on stuffed pumpkins.
6. No progress on yarn usage.
7. Did yoga twice last week, need to make sure I'm not screwing up my foot.
8. No response from alumni department.

Status a week in:

Goals for January:
1) 31 workouts - 7 complete. I need to get after it, because I have two business trips in a row starting next week, and jet lag usually really hurts my routine.
2) Cash flow our property tax payment - done.
3) Keep grocery spending to $625 & dining out to $100. - this is going to be tight. We unexpectedly ate out while skiing (caught in a snowstorm), but that is our travel budget. We've spent a lot on groceries, stocking up after being out of town, plus I had to buy ingredients for my son's school cooking final project. At least $35 on that. I was unimpressed.
4) Identify 3 new items to sell for my side hustle - I have three items, but can't list them on eBay, given my travel schedule & mailing. I'll have to get them listed when I'm back.
5) Figure out craft project for 2019 homemade Christmas project - no, but I now have the name of the person I'm crafting for. If anything, it makes it more challenging. He's a 16 year old boy. :-)

This month's goals:

1. Stick to budget - no more than $2,700 on expenses (exception will be anything put toward student loan) Hmmmm so far looks like we're tracking okay. We have $644 left for the month but that only has to cover food and a haircut. Should be able to do it.
2. Workout 3x/week hehe last week was a wash, I got in 1 workout and that was a fight. Hoping to get to the gym tomorrow AM...
3. Ride bike to work 15 total times 1/15 so far...have some catching up to do
4. Yoga 1x/week Went once last week, need to find time to go again this week
5. Eat down fridge/pantry - spend less than $700 on food for the month (abysmal by MMM standards, stretch for us) $281/700. Well we somehow spent an obscene amount of money on groceries this first weekend and idd not spend enough effort eating what we already have. Need to play catch up here.
6. Start journaling Started, and it feels good!

Week 1 update:

Goals for January:
1. Decrease screen time - screen free between getting off work and DH getting home, and screens off after 8pm - Going ok.  Pretty good at not getting on when I get home, but I'm sliding later into the evening to compensate.  Most nights going to 8:30 or even 9.  Need to keep working on this.
2. Small workout at least 5 times/week - Missed one day last week, but made it up over the weekend.
3. Pack lunch every day for work - On track
4. Cook a new recipe - Not yet, but I have a recipe picked out.  Just need to get the ingredients I'm missing.
5. Read 4 books - Ahead of schedule - 3 down.  One was a bit of a cheat, though (reread), so I'll try to get at least 2 more for the month.

Late to the party, but I'm in.

Goals:
1) Don't spend anything on myself
2) Stick to our budget for groceries, household, and kid expenses
3) Floss every night (this is my only 2019 resolution :)
4) Do 15 squats a day - I'm 30 weeks pregnant, and I'm definitely not diving into a new fitness routine right now, but this is 100% doable from now on.

Week 2 update:

Goals for January:
1. Decrease screen time - screen free between getting off work and DH getting home, and screens off after 8pm - I've been slipping :(  This is really hard for me, especially since I keep my to-do list and many of my recipes on the computer.
2. Small workout at least 5 times/week - Slipping on this one too.  It's been so cold I don't want to walk outside, and I haven't had the motivation to keep up my indoor alternatives.
3. Pack lunch every day for work - On track
4. Cook a new recipe - Success!  I've actually made 3 new recipes - red onion-cranberry marmalade, balsamic pickled eggs, and rajma
5. Read 4 books - Complete!  Currently at 6 books for the year so far.

Some updated goal stuff:

1. Average 13,353 steps a day. Got this one going good so far!
2. Exercise 3x/week Mostly looking good.
3. Save $1283.85 Saved about $950 so far with a paycheck still incoming at the end of the month.
4. Read a book from pre-2019 collection.
5. Make and send stuffed pumpkins. (Ugh, nothing on this yet.)
6. Use rest of black yarn (cowl?). (Also nothing on this.)
7. Yoga 4x/week. Averaging 2-3 times per week right now -- I might need to do less yoga if I'm going to fit in more cardio. I apparently just can't be arsed to do a lot of exercise, eh.
8. Get alumni ID. I'm trying. I'm trying so hard. Does it surprise you that I would am now on my fourth follow up email about this and have still not made any headway? There's are reasons I left academia....

Going to keep it pretty simple for January:

Keep track of all spending
Rein in spending that got out of control the past few months
Lose at least 5 pounds
Put $625 towards IRA (catch-up 2018) Already completed
Consume zero beer FAILED
List at least 5 items for sale on eBay Already completed
Organize pile of papers currently sitting on my desk Already completed

***Update***
I've been able to check a few more items off the list. I listed 7 items on ebay so far (no sales, bah!) as well as 1 item on a facebook group.  I also went through and organized my desk, and got rid of a lot of paperwork that I no longer needed. I've done well to keep it clean.

I'm currently hovering around the 5 lbs lost mark, so that's a positive. I've also done well both keeping track and reining in spending this month. There is still a week + to go so I need to keep it up.

I failed the no beer goal, as one of my favorite breweries had a draft-only release that I really wanted to try. But I've cut back significantly.

With just a few days to go in January:
Goals for January:
1) 31 workouts - 24/31 so far. Lots of traveling made this one really difficult.
2) Cash flow our property tax payment - done.
3) Keep grocery spending to $625 & dining out to $100. - definitely not going to hit this. My husband had to go on a special diet for allergies for a short period of time, so we spend about $200 on specialty items. The hives are gone, & now he can pinpoint what's causing them. I'm not going to sweat it. Life, and all that. I'm just going to try really hard to reduce food waste.
4) Identify 3 new items to sell for my side hustle - I have three items, but can't list them on eBay, given my travel schedule & mailing. I did sell one item already.
5) Figure out craft project for 2019 homemade Christmas project - no, but I now have the name of the person I'm crafting for. If anything, it makes it more challenging. He's a 16 year old boy. :-)

Month end update

1. Stick to budget ($2,105) - I went over by about $1500. $1k of that was for my cat for unexpected vet costs the other $200 was for Maternity clothes, I just couldn't go on wearing the same 3 shirts (2 of which were short sleeved) The other $300 is spread out over a few categories.
2. Pay down SL by $1,400 - $900 (that was my updated plan since I wanted to increase my 401K Contribution)
3. Save $340 in various accounts - Done
4. Increase Net-worth by $3K - Increased by $3,460.63 :)
5. Save $1K in 401K - $1,100
6. Finish reading "Childbirth without Fear", "The Stand", and "Lady of the River" - I haven't finished any books this month :(
7. Do yoga 2x a week - Only went a couple times this month. I need to start just doing it at home. I have no motivation to leave the house once I get home at the end of the day
8. Go to the gym 2x a week - zero times!
9. Hit 10K steps a day (20+ days) -5 days (I will hopefully reach it today too)
10. Have 10 no spend days (or under $5 spending) - 7 days

Since it's now the very end of the month, I'll update!

1. Average 13,353 steps a day. DONE. I'm pleased so far. I have a goal this year to walk 2000 miles and this is what I have to do to get there. ;)
2. Exercise 3x/week Ehhhh. I did okay earlier in the month, but have tapered off.
3. Save $1283.85 Boom. Saved $1600. The EF is looking pretty good.
4. Read a book from pre-2019 collection. Read two!
5. Make and send stuffed pumpkins. Pumpkin is nearly done; I just need to finish off the stem and leaves and send it out.
6. Use rest of black yarn (cowl?). Work is underway. One small cowl is made; the rest will probably go into a hat.
7. Yoga 4x/week. Nope. Started out strong, went away even worse than the regular exercise. I was too ambitious in my fitness goals for this month, which I knew from the start.
8. Get alumni ID.
