« on: January 29, 2019, 01:35:18 PM »

-Make $300 in sidehustle
-Meditate 16 times
-Have a date with my husband
-Run 8 times
-All unplanned money to kids college or mortgage paydown (no punches!)
-New homework system in place for the kids
-Plan sabbatical time off (dates for trips, etc)

Ooh, nice. I don’t have nearly so well-thought-out a list as you. I want to bike to work the max possible. I’ll give myself one day of free pass for sick/tired/weather/whatever, but that is all.

My coach asked me to think about what my goals are for this year. “2019 is the year of...”? I need to work on figuring that out in feb.

My February goals (which may be edited some time before the 1st):

1. Average 13,353 steps a day.
2. Exercise 3x20 minutes a week, for 12 sessions total. Anything that's not walking counts.
3. Save $1383.85 (to be fine-tuned once I do more nitpicky financial planning for February).
4. Finish The Woman in White.
5. Finish piecing afghan.
6. Send pumpkin and Paradyne.
7. Use up black yarn.
8. Get pile of stuff to Goodwill and animal shelter.

1. Increase net worth by $2,500
2. Walk 10K steps everyday
3. Finish reading "Childbirth without fear", "The Stand", and The Lady of the River"
4. Stay in budget ($2,105)
5. Contribute $1,600 to 401K
6. Pack hospital bag as much as I can ahead of time
7. Do yoga 8x
8. Go to the gym 8x
9. "Tidy up" all clothes (I've already taken care of my shirts, now I just need to work on the other categories)
10. Meditate daily

I want to:

1. Keep up regular running 3x a week
2. Build a text-based adventure game for my wife's upcoming birthday
3. Track expenses relentlessly
4. Meet up with one random friend I haven't seen in awhile but miss.
5. Learn to play a new song on the piano

Quote
3. Save $1383.85 (to be fine-tuned once I do more nitpicky financial planning for February).

I like that this amount is subject to further fine-tuning.

ETA: Also, I am liking the idea of monthly goals for 2019. I am not so great at follow up with the BIG yearly goals and I'm hoping this will help me do a little better.

January was pretty successful so I am looking to build on that:

1. Make 2018 IRA Contribution of $625
2. Open a 529 plan for DD and contribute $250 - enough to get the full match that my state provides
3. Track all expenses to the penny
4. List 10 items on ebay/similar sites
5. Reduce snacking/eating out spending by 25%
6. Reduce beer spending by 50%
7. Workout at least 8 times during the month
8. Lose at least 5 pounds
9. Keep total non-medical expenses below $1,000 for the month
10. Do a deep dive into my record collection, identifying records that I can get rid of with the goal of reducing the size of my collection by at least 25%.
11. Play guitar for at least 15 minutes one or more times.

The overarching theme behind my goals is reducing expenses and saving money, while reducing clutter/personal items. Additionally, I am focusing on my health, which I have really let go of over the last few years.

February goals

Do:
Hike at least 8 times.
Exercise at least 15 minutes daily. (Why do I find that so hard? It’s 15 minutes!)
Write overdue letters to older relatives.
File taxes.
Keep cooking at home instead of eating out.
Meditate 2x week.
Get bicycle ready for spring riding.
Buy ticket to Paris for late spring.  Done Feb 1!  (Caught a great deal, $350 round trip)

Don’t:
Waste time at work.
Spend evenings on screen time.

Good idea, I enjoyed the January version.
1. Save at least 50% of income. Stretch goal: 55-60%.
2. Go to local bootcamp at least 3 weeks out of 4. (Already missing tomorrow, so I'll have to be disciplined!)
3. Start each day with 5-10 minutes of quick exercise.
4. Do several social things every week, as I now have 2 full days off.

First off, congrats! My little one was born last April, so she is almost one. Crazy how time flies.

The program is called CHET Baby Scholars. You have until the child turns one to open the account, but I believe the child must also reside in CT to be eligible. I keep putting it off from month to month, but I don't want to lose out on a free $250, so that's why I added it to my goals this month.

I read through some info on this and I didn't see that the beneficiary needed to reside in CT but just that the person opening the account did. I'll have to look deeper into this.

Hi Haypug!

This link may be helpful:

https://www.aboutchet.com/buzz/baby.shtml

It unfortunately confirms my suspicions. I'll look around some more when I get home later. I know we received some paraphernalia in the mail so I'll take a look at that to be sure.

According to the link above, I apparently I only have to put in $150 to get the $250, which is even better - so I was mistaken on that. Again I'll have to double check the paperwork that I received to confirm.

Update on goals:

February goals:

$1000 to mortgage principal + other savings goals - on track
BUY A BIKE and start riding for groceries/library - bought the bike last night! I have to start messing around with actually riding it now
Stick to Tim Ferriss' slow carb diet 100% - lose 10 pounds or more - eh.. lost 3-4 pounds in week 1, but may be lucky to plateau this week
Read 3 books from list of 30 for the year - working through Walden by Thoreau
Workout at least twice per week - will workout tonight to accomplish for this week
Walk dog at least three times per week - will walk dog tonight for second time this week
Pay off wife's phone and move to my plan with Google Fi - still procrastinating
Change engine and cabin air filters on both cars, research hypermiling techniques - been practicing hypermiling lately, still have to order air filters and install, maybe Sunday?
No alcohol, no eating out - work lunches have killed this goal, at least they were free for me. Will get back to it next week.

Good luck, guys, hope you're all having much success!

We are going to sell our house next year. The goal is to take away some of the things that could cause a negative first impression. Today I painted the wooden panel in the main bathroom. DH fixed the lock of a little door that was hanging ajar.

We have a whole list of things and indoor painting was one of the easy ones to do while it is winter. We also need to paint the entrance.

7. Use up black yarn.
8. Get pile of stuff to Goodwill and animal shelter. Stuff for the animal shelter is gone.

I finally got around to a couple of my 2019 goals.  I finally switched from ATT to Comcast.  ATT kept creeping up the price of my internet and it was $77.  I’ve been calling over the years and getting it lowered time and again but I finally had enough.  They kept wanting me to keep their uverse box which I almost never use just to get their “low” Internet rate of $50.  Enough was finally enough and I told them to cancel our plan.  Now I’m on Comcast for $29.99 per month.  My dad has a web based business and thus is constantly upgrading modems and routers.  He gave me one of his old modems and routers and so I don’t have to rent a shitty modem/router anymore like a sucker.  Feels good!

Next, I fought the county assessor and got my assessment lowered again.  I’m 2-0 since moving to this house.  I kind of lucked out because the neighbor directly across the street sold his house last year for 175K.  I used that recent sale as a comp when I made my appeal and it worked.  My old neighbor let his house go to shit and the roofing was literally falling off when it was sold for a bargain.  My house is worth 213K according to Zillow and I’d say that’s accurate.  But the county agreed with me at 175K.  Never let a good opportunity to escape taxes go to waste I guess.

I’m at the point where there’s really nothing left to optimize or get a better deal as far as my monthly fixed spending.  The only thing left on my list is to downsize the garbage tote that we use.  We have the big monstrous size and there’s one bag in it most weeks.  I think I can save $1 per month or something if I ask for the smaller tote.

I painted the second room that needs painting, the entrance. It looks like one layer of paint covers it. The hall looks so much nicer now than before, without all these scratches on it.

One bathroom to go, painting. And the front door, both inside and outside. But we might keep that until shorter before the house sale, as it is easier to get damaged again.

I'm in!

1. Save $2,000 after-tax dollars - gonna be tight this month due to a big projected expense
2. Have my bike up and operational - got an old used free bike, bought Zinn book and am going to get it into riding condition
3. Finish reading the book Antifragile - it is a very heavy, complex book that is taking me a while to get through
4. Weight up to 180# - Started at 178#, goal of 190# by the end of 2019. 180# end of this month means I'm on track
5. Reach "Family" in Duolingo French module - goal is to complete entire module by end of 2019.

2/21 Update:
1. Save $2,000 after-tax dollars - Still on track for $3,000
2. Have my bike up and operational - Up and operational.
3. Finish reading the book Antifragile - 4 chapters to go. Projected to be done this weekend.
4. Weight up to 180# - 178# at last weigh-in :(
5. Reach "Family" in Duolingo French module - On level 3 in questions, LOTS of work to go.

2/23 update. It's been a really rough month. I had a work trip, was sick with bronchitis, & then we were on vacation. Anyway, here goes.

-28 workouts - 9/28. Being sick really crushed this.
-Make $300 in sidehustle - $380/300
-Meditate 16 times - 2/16.
-Have a date with my husband - this didn't happen for a variety of reasons. We have next Saturday free while both kids are at a sleepover
-Run 8 times - 1/8
-All unplanned money to kids college or mortgage paydown (no punches!) - on track
-New homework system in place for the kids - mostly on track
-Plan sabbatical time off (dates for trips, etc) - locked down one of the trip dates, which should inform the rest

Work was much busier than expected this month, so not as much accomplished as I wanted

Lose between 3 and 5 pounds (lost 2 pounds)
Read 5 books (read 2 books)
Cut 200 dollars from monthly expenses (only cut 50 dollars from monthly expenses)
Declutter at least 50 items (35 items decluttered)

Here's my update:

Quote
1. Keep up regular running 3x a week
2. Build a text-based adventure game for my wife's upcoming birthday
3. Track expenses relentlessly
4. Meet up with one random friend I haven't seen in awhile but miss.
5. Learn to play a new song on the piano

1. Did pretty well.
2. Still in progress, but I hope to deliver by March 2 (the birthday).
3. Kept up with this...yuck at how much I'm spending. There has been definite lifestyle creep since last I tracked compulsively.
4. Did not happen, but we got it on the calendar for March 10.
5. Made some solid progress, but got lazy towards the end of the month.

Final Update:

1. Meditate after work, at least 5 minutes
 - Pretty good, I missed only 1 day.  Will increase to 10 minutes minimum for next month.
2. Limit computer time to timed breaks
 - Not perfect, but this approach is a big improvement over my previous attempt.  Will continue into March.
3. Pack lunch for work every day
 - Missed only 1 day
4. Eat a vegetable at every lunch/dinner
 - Very good, I think I missed only 1-2 days
5. Read 4 books
 - Picked up in the second half of the month, for a total of 8

Final update:

1. Average 13,353 steps a day. I will not make this one -- I have been lazy and stressed all month and have not walked nearly enough (which is unfortunate, especially because walking is a lovely de-stressor).
2. Exercise 3x20 minutes a week, for 12 sessions total. Anything that's not walking counts. I've run once. I have finally plonked down the money for a gym membership, which I think will be motivating.
3. Save $1383.85 (to be fine-tuned once I do more nitpicky financial planning for February). $1500 saved this month.
4. Finish The Woman in White.
5. Finish piecing afghan.
6. Send pumpkin and Paradyne. Still still need to get to the post office, which is unfortunately only open during work hours.
7. Use up black yarn.
8. Get pile of stuff to Goodwill and animal shelter. Stuff for the animal shelter is gone.

I did a lot of crafting this month, because crafting is a lovely lazy de-stressor, but let stresses about work + housing get in the way of my other goals. :(

2. Have my bike up and operational - Up and operational.
3. Finish reading the book Antifragile - 4 chapters to go. Projected to be done this weekend.
4. Weight up to 180# - 178# today.. no progress.
5. Reach "Family" in Duolingo French module - Fell about 2 lessons short.

Overall pleased. 3/5, and they were the 3 that I would consider the highest priority (maybe why I accomplished them..?).

February Results
1. Increase net worth by $2,500 - Done, increased by $4,999.71
2. Walk 10K steps everyday - 8/28 days, not so good but at least it's not zero?
3. Finish reading "Childbirth without fear", "The Stand", and The Lady of the River" - I read very little this month. :(
4. Stay in budget ($2,105) - Not so good, I came in just under $3K. $1k of which was for the babymoon vacation taken last week.
5. Contribute $1,600 to 401K - Done :)
6. Pack hospital bag as much as I can ahead of time - Not done, I'm not really sure how to pack when I need to wear the clothes I would be packing... I;ll get something together next month after the baby shower as I'll at least have the babies stuff ready to go.
7. Do yoga 8x - Nope
8. Go to the gym 8x - and nope again
9. "Tidy up" all clothes (I've already taken care of my shirts, now I just need to work on the other categories) - I have gone through some more clothes but have not finished
10. Meditate daily - I did meditate a few times but far from daily

Nothing to do but move on to March, after reevaluating some goals.

-Crushed your net worth goal, @haypug16 ! I feel like you can round to $5k. ;-)
-Awesome, @philli14 - that's good progress across a number of goals!
-@diapasoun - I fell similarly short of the running goal. We can cheer each other on in March.
-@Raenia - you crushed it! I worked on meditation this month as well, and had progress, but need to be more consistent.
-@acepedro45 - good work. Jealous of your consistent running & need to make this happen myself in March.

I was sick for about half the month, which really slowed things down. Here's how I did:

-28 workouts - 17/28. Being sick really crushed this.
-Make $300 in sidehustle - $380/300
-Meditate 16 times - 4/16.
-Have a date with my husband - this didn't happen for a variety of reasons, but we have plans this weekend.
-Run 8 times - 3/8
-All unplanned money to kids college or mortgage paydown (no punches!) - done
-New homework system in place for the kids - done
-Plan sabbatical time off (dates for trips, etc) - booked the biggest trip, so the rest should come together

As of the last day of February I have not driven to work once this year. In fact, the last time I drove to work was one day during the big fires last year which was, what, Nov? That part is awesome.

As for the rest, I feel like we are just barely holding our lives together. Pretty much every conversation I have with my husband includes one of us saying “things are really hard right now, but we’ll get through it”.

Some years are just the Year of Hunkering Down or the Year of Keeping It Together. That too is an achievement.
