Eat from the freezer/pantry challenge.
« on: October 22, 2014, 10:56:54 AM »
I've worked to stock up my pantry and freezer this summer and with things they way they are, now is the time to minimize food costs.  I'm going to allow up to $10 a week.  I'd like to do this for a month and then see where we are.  Today is day one.  Last night I made a beef pot pie with veggies and meat from the freezer and pesky phyllo dough that had been sitting back there forever because I bought it one day instead of puff pastry by accident.  I also defrosted pork carnitas so I would have a few options.  There was extra pot pie filling leftover and I'm going to freeze that to be used later on pasta or rice.

A neighbor gave me a crate of apples so I have a ton of those.  My friend is going to give me a couple potatoes and two heads of romaine.  I have a cabbage that I'm going to make this http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/warm-cabbage-with-bacon-and-gorgonzola-recipe.html in a few days.  It's one of my favorites, I have everything with a few substitutions.  Will still have half the cabbage left to make some sort of salad with.

Where else would you eat from?

LOL!  Buying stuff at the grocery store instead of eating what I have stock piled:)  Trying to work the pile down a bit.  Also, no eating out.

Am freezing some of the pot pie.  Was too much to eat in a row.  Finished pork carnitas.  Making tuna salad and my cabbage dish.  Possibly making some protein bars, or my favorite fake brownies tonight.   http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-13037/heavenly-guilt-free-fudgy-date-brownies-gluten-free.html  I actually prefer the dough raw because it tends to almost taste burnt when cooked.  But I need something sweet because the headaches are gnarly!!   Coming off of processed shit food again is really nasty.  I feel almost like I have the start of the flu.  I dont' know why I do this to myself!  However, this will be the last time I do.  Going to get through this month!!

Hi Tami1982,

There is a similar current challenge going on here: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/throw-down-the-gauntlet/eat-all-the-food-in-your-house-take-2/

Lots of us are doing something similar right now, great thread for inspiration :)
