Donate Your Coronavirus Stimulus Money
« on: March 23, 2020, 04:27:49 AM »
At some point in the near future the federal government will probably be throwing out some helicopter money to try and keep the economy humming along. If you're in this forum, there's a fairly good chance that you're doing well financially and this money will not really be necessary. Therefore, I challenge everyone to give that money to someone you know in need. Family member, friend, neighbor, complete stranger. We all know someone who is going to be far worse off than us either due to reduced hours, job loss, or losing a small business. To say nothing of those second and third order effects like losing health insurance due to job loss. So rather than putting it all into VTSAX, donate it to someone in need.

Our plan is to give the money we receive to my wife's sister. She's a single mom with asthma and a young child, so she took a leave of absence from her retail job a few weeks ago when there were still only a handful of cases in the state. The few thousand dollars we expect to get will cover a couple of month's expenses for her while it will be less than two weeks pay for me. Ideally I can help her use some of it to start a Roth IRA and take advantage of the sale on equities - though ultimately her day to day living expenses will probably be the higher priority.

That's a nobel idea. I'm not getting cash payments, but I've decided to spend a little extra in the small businesses in my local area. They are people with families to feed and mortgages to pay, and they need our support.

Great thread @Michael in ABQ.  I'm not sure if we'll get anything, but I'm in.  If we don't get a check I'll make a donation anyway and report back.

As long as my job isn’t lost during this economic downturn (oil & gas, so definitely a high possibility) I also intend to donate any money we receive. Granted, I think with my income, and many other on here, we will be in too high of an impact bracket to receive anything (over $99k)

This is a wonderful idea, I love it!
I know food banks in my area are requesting money instead of food, and women's shelters are probably hurting as well.

I can't join as I've lost my job but it's wonderful to see people taking care of each other. We all need to see this-- it builds our belief in one another :)

I've been trying to do what I can..keep in touch more with my extroverted friends & siblings who are having a harder time.

I think this is so, so important. I’m in, and if I make too much to get a check, in still in and will donate the equivalent.

If you still have your paycheck and/or substantial assets, also considering donating now. This week I’ve donated to Feeding America, my local food bank, and the largest homeless shelter/clinic in my city. I’ve also Venmo’d $20 to every fitness instructor I know personally, whether I actually attend their Instagram live and zoom workouts or not. Most event venues like local theaters have set up accounts to support their staff that were all suddenly laid off. If I end up ordering Postmates or grocery delivery, I will tip outrageously.

Wonderful idea. Assuming my household does not lose income (which it doesn't appear we will) I will donate mine.

Great idea and thanks for the reminder to break me out of the default of dumping it into index funds. I’ll donate it if I receive one.

I volunteer at the thrift store for a cat shelter/adoption center.  Obviously, the store isn't open, nor is the shelter open to adopt, but the cats still need to eat, rent and power bills need to be paid.  I've donated some, but if we get a check, more will go to them.

My hairdresser, also shut down, will get a substantial tip next time I go.  The local food bank is also on the list.

I think we should donate it to the great POTUS' 2020 reelection campaign. He can't even campaign right now....how is the poor guy going to lead us to another 4 years of victory and get us out of this whole mess?!

In that case I guess I'll buy Vaseline stock with mine.

I was just discussing this with my wife. While we would normally not spend money on lots of things we've decided to find ways to purchase from our local (very walkable/bikeable) businesses. After being mustachian for so long, this is outside of our comfort zones for certain but we really want to help these businesses stay afloat through these hard times.

That's a really good thing to do.  We're try to do the same.  There's a bakery oriented coffee shop that nearby that we're in love with.  We used to treat ourselves to sharing a slice of their wonderful cakes once every week or two.  Now DW calls in a pick up order for about $50 of stuff at a time.  It was a little uncomfortable for me at first, but I want their business to survive and know that they really need our support.  Since we're fat FIRE'd and can afford to help more I'm going to suggest that we start buying even more from them & sharing it with our neighbors.  That will support the bakery more & help lift the spirits of our neighbors too.  :)

I've got a better idea. With all the people at risk of defaulting on their loans, the banks are in big trouble.  I'm using any stimulus money to pay ahead on my car loan to help minimize the damage to the economy.  The banks get a lifeline and I get closer to paying off my loan, a win win.

We are making a donation today to help a local family in dire need.  We've also been spending at small local businesses to support them.

Already sent checks in excess of that amount out to friends and family who are struggling. They should all receive them by today. Thank goodness, I've always believed in a big, fat EF. So grateful I didn't listen to the "you-don't-need-it" noise.

I'm committing to donate $500 of the stimulus if/when I get it (the rest to student loans).

If you don't know anyone in need (or if you'd rather allocate money in a more objective way) GiveDirectly is taking donations for a new COVID relief effort. They give cash directly to the neediest Americans.

Thank you for this! I just donated to both their COVID-19 fund and the general poverty reduction fund after doing some research about it.

Tenant trashed a house last December and vacatewe're just now getting the repairs completed.

We've offered the use of it (for free) to medical workers who need a place to stay so they don't infect their families.   It should be occupied by the end of the week.

Don't know what we'll do with the govt checks.    I guess using it to cover the utility costs would be a start.

Thanks for this @remizidae!  I didn't know they were active in the US.  I've read about their methods and I approve -- will gladly make a donation.

The stimulus also includes a $300 above-the-line deduction for cash charitable contributions made to 501(c)(3) organizations for taxpayers who take the standard deduction. I'm adopting a rescue dog from a 501c3, and this will apply for the adoption donation.

Based on my research they usually focus on "emerging markets" where a no-strings-attached dollar can do more good per person (I read an NPR article about how $22/month covers "poverty line" expenses like basic food for a person in rural Kenya - you can definitely keep more absolute numbers of people alive, fed, and able to focus on issues up the hierarchy of needs if you focus on these areas). It looks like COVID is a special case for a special circumstance. <3
