Don't buy anything in Black Friday sales 2019
« on: November 29, 2019, 02:33:11 AM »
Rules of the gauntlet are simple: don't buy anything in the Black Friday sales.

I'm first. I'm in Australia so the sun has set on the opportunity: the shops are shut. The internet I guess will be shut in a few hours at midnight. I didn't buy anything.

ETA: all you Mericans, suck it up and stay away from the sales, you hear me!

As an Australian, black Friday refers to a day 10 years ago when 175 people died in fires.  Today I bought some meat for dinner, but did not, and will not buy at sales with this name.

The savings are huge, so you may shoot yourself in the foot if you miss a deal today only to pay more later.

We purchased some discounted Christmas gifts yesterday and might end up driving 7+ hrs back home so no chance we get to any stores in order to buy useless crap.

I do agree with another poster that there are some deals to be had today, if you don't mind owning last year/generation's tech.

I'm normally not one for BF sales but this year the gift I had picked out for my spouse (a punch pass to the local climbing gym) is 50% off if I call and buy it over the phone this afternoon. We're actually having our family meal today instead of yesterday so I put an alarm on my watch so I don't forget! I also ordered pajamas yesterday online for my son, since he wants ones that match his little sister. And I used a gift card to buy a meal planning app that someone here on the forum recommended that was on sale yesterday. Ah well. I'm certainly not going into any stores today, or even this weekend.

I am surprised at how long 'Black Friday' is now. Retailers are claiming that 'Black Friday starts early!' in mid-November now which just makes it all so meaningless.

I’m in, I typically try not to buy anything on Black Friday: it’s Buy Nothing Day, a rejection of the consumerist culture that’s embodied in Black Friday mania. So I definitely don’t hit up the retail stores, and I try to avoid even things like grocery shopping, eating out, and getting gas on this day.

Yes I know, I think of that every time I hear the name. :(   Is nothing sacred?

Good on you few folks who remained abstinent. Looks like most of the board went shopping...

We adopted a shelter dog, so I guess I can't take credit for not shopping...we did buy a collar, leash, and doggie bowls at the shelter, in addition to paying the adoption fee.

Didn't even look at the sales circulars or online at the "deals". Did get about 200 emails over the holiday weekend from what seems like every company I ever bought something from.

DO need to sit down with DW and decide what we are doing for the kids soon.

I give you a free pass for that one...adopting a rescue just doesn't seem to be a Black Friday sale to me, and if you bought those things at the shelter the profit  helps support it.

And then there was CYBER-MONDAY!
Its Tuesday here now, and I didn't buy anything.
How are we all holding out on cyber-Monday?

I topped up my MyKI (public transport card).   There wasn't any extra discount on that.  Does this count as an online purchase?  Otherwise, I'm avoiding all purchases until I need them.

Somehow I've set myself to be arbitrator of other peoples purchases - kind of fun.
The intent of the gauntlet was to not spend on the Big sales...regular non-discounted online purchases get a free pass.

We didn't buy anything of consequence.  I looked online several times but wasn't tempted whatsoever. It seems like with rise of internet shopping, great deals area available year round. If you are frugal and shop for open-box or refurbished items, it gets even better.

Ok, but I did shop on Black Friday for DIY supplies that were not on sale. (Does that somehow make it better or just poor timing by my house to need those specific repairs?)

Can I still get credit for having thrown down the gauntlet on this one?

Congratulations! I agree with @happy - that doesn't really count. The spirit of Black Friday shopping is rampant consumerism, and adopting a shelter dog is the act of lovingly opening your home to one of God's creatures. That's a whole different animal!

I bought three pair of jeans to replace the ones I've worn through this year. They were advertised as Black Friday deal, but I was going to get pants this month anyway.

Did not buy one thing. Was still in my Thanksgiving food coma! Actually worked my side gig for about 5 hours.

My SO and her daughters have a tradition of going into Manhattan on BF and shopping at the vintage/thrift stores (and one particular cheap costume jewelry place). I get dragged along, and usually find a second-hand shirt or jacket for pocket change. So neither "Black Friday" sales nor "Buy Nothing Day", but somewhere in between. The stores aren't even crowded, since everyone is off shopping at the department stores and big-box stores with the big sales.
