Creating an exercise habit for the previously unfit
« on: July 28, 2017, 02:57:10 PM »
This is a new exercise accountability/discussion thread.  It was started for those of us that are not fit, who want to become healthier, but of course the more athletic at welcome too!

Today :
Steep hike to Internet Rock (where I have to go sit to get Internet) 15 min round trip. X2 (I aim for 3 a day, but it is about to rain).
Jog to the driveway gate (75') to open the gate for the truck x2
Leg exercises (leg lifts and squats) and very modified push-ups

I'm in! I don't consider myself unfit. I'm just nothing.

Things I Love Moving My Body In
freestyle dance, no start and end minute
long hikes with only quiet adult humans
long easy silent bike rides
swimming in a lane all to myself, with no child to care for
swimming in ocean/lake/river with wide berth but humans nearby
very specific aquafit class with very specific instructor

I will look for more opportunities for these.

Here!  Fourth day in a row with some decent walking (more than half an hour) while baby-wearing or pushing the stroller.  It doesn't feel really significant but doing it adds up.

What do you mean for the previously unfit? I was in such good shape a couple years back! But not now.
So if the currently unfit may join I am in!!

Yesterday: 15 min walk to store and back in 99F heat.
I think, today I'll wait for the sun to set before I go for a walk.
We have a lovely greenbelt here.... we shall see!

GO GO GO :)

I would suggest you start riduclously small, make it easy, make it social, and celebrate every small daily win.

I said 'previously unfit' because if this thread is still alive in 6 months, I will no longer be unfit!  It felt like a curse or something to have it be a thread for the currently unfit!

And obviously, since I am posting, I walked up to Internet rock for a third time today.

Welcome everyone!
Zony - you rock!
Okits - nice job!
Jooni - those sound lovely.
Kenaces - thanks for the encouragement!

I like this thread because now I can feel proud of myself ;)

When kid texted to be picked up early, I walked.
YEAH, BABY!
15 minutes one way -about half of that up good hills- then slower home in the sickening heat.
Because of this thread, I aimed for increased speed and squatty leg lengths going up.
Aside from the heat, thoroughly enjoyed.
Plus every aspect of this helps both our neurologies.

This is me.  Totally unfit.  I have done a lot of walking these last couple of days but I really need to start walking everyday.  I can't seem to stay committed.  So, I am here to follow with everyone.

I've started a 6 week boxing challenge, so I've stepped up my exercise a little bit compared to normal.

Yesterday: 30mins cycling + 45min walk + 20min jog + 30mins boxing.
Today is less active: 1 hr walk + 20mins cycling to the shops.

I wear a Fitbit & love getting steps & active mins everyday.

Nothing today.  It was raining during the time I would have walked.  Tomorrow.  Maybe.  I'll be hiking around more next week in scenic places, so that should help.

Went on another walk today 15 min one way.....to the store....to get chocolate ice cream!!
But we walked!! All of those 30 minutes ;)

When we came back the same folks were out as yesterday and they said "You walked AGAIN? Where to today?"
And I just said "Albertsons, Ice cream run!"

LOL!

I also downloaded a few yoga videos so I can get into the swing of things again.
I used to love yoga.

Currently unfit, checking in :)

I went hiking with my dad on Wednesday...but he purposely picked an easy hike. So easy that i was like "Does he really think i'm THIS out of shape?" But i'm afraid to ask.

Thought today I'd like to swim indoors (lap lane), was all acked by how loud the pool in my new town is. Realized, duh, it's a swimming pool, I can totally wear my bright foam earplugs and still even look totally normal!!! I wonder why I've never thought to wear them before? I don't need them for water issues, like some folks. I absolutely need them for how much people yell in echoey pools. Can do!

57 minute (moderate) hike.
A few days ago I did the same hike and was utterly, wretchedly miserable.  But that was in the afternoon in the high 80's.  This morning it was probably 70.  I think I need to be getting out earlier to be happy.
I also noticed at the beginning of the hike I was really grumpy and pissed off (in my head).  I think I have a sound track I play that I developed over several years about how I hate exercise.  Not positive how I change that, but I am going to be thinking about it.

Sam - Everyone is welcome here - even if you are quite fit!  And definitely tell us what you are doing and it will inspire me. I just wanted a space where I could post really little accomplishments and be happy with those.

Welcome Rosy!
Jooni - ear plugs are a great idea.  I should try that.
Jessa - every hike counts, even the ridiculously easy ones!
Zony - ice cream runs are perhaps the pinnacle of fitness.  🙂

The "Odd Chore" thread really helped to kick me into doing small things that I've put off for ages.

I hope this one will help me do the same with getting more fit.  Today I will walk outside for at least 30 minutes.  I'm going to wander through the new development being built behind us - it's huge, so 30 minutes is a conservative estimate.

Thanks for starting this thread ML.

Today I went for a morning walk with dog and DH, which I hadn't done in several days due to busyness. So I feel good about that.
I definitely need the do tiny things, rather than nothing, plan.

I am previously fit and currently unfit. I'd like to make exercise more habitual. So I'm joining anyway. :)

My exercise yesterday -

Taking the stairs to the garage each way (2 full flights) - 3 RTs. One of those was because I forgot my car key - and unfortunately, it was with the Floof. So extra exercise carrying Floof part way so she didn't have to do up/down + up/down twice in a row.

More Floof carrying - maybe 1/2 mile walking in total with carrying?

Floof walking - probably 1/2 mile worth

I realize I need a fitness tracker again - I may be very off with these guesstimates.

Floof lifting - 20 reps?

Squats due to Floof - unknown

*1 Floof = 16 or 17 lbs

I defrosted  the fridge this morning and when I turned it on again all I got was flashing leds.  Not a good sign as I'm plugged into shore power and have propane.  My RV troubleshooter suggested turning it off for at least 2 min and trying yet again.  I decided to turn it off and go for a walk.  It is cloudy here today, so not too hot.  My walk was somewhere around a mile.  I'll use my walking app on my phone to clock it tonight.  Came home and turned on the fridge.  So far, so good.  Who knows.

What in the hell is a lurgy?

I repeatedly lifted my primary eating hand to my primary eating orifice today. That's the sum total of my exercise. Plus some pushups, I guess. Oh! And I jogged. But mostly I ate. Hamburgers.

Short walk on the greenbelt with no stores involved this time.
Interesting area to explore, walked by an old racetrack that's no longer in use.
Kinda sad and depressing, but I somehow like those lost places.
Then we walked all around the campground.
Probably 45 minutes walk (more like a leasurely stroll) but at least we got out.

I was previously fit. I am now stunningly unfit. And I just had surgery 3 weeks ago and am trying to ease back into things gradually.

I didn't do squat today but hopefully this thread will motivate me to do something tomorrow!

What in the hell is a lurgy?
A non-specific illness with flu-like symptoms. Evidently it comes from the Goon show. But you're an American, so I am not sure that the Goon show made it to your shores. It usually has the prefix "the dreaded". However, according to wikinary it is used in America as well.

In my case I have a sore head, sore throat, sore eyes, blocked ears, ache all over, am dizzy when I get out of bed, am coughing, and have a runny nose. It probably isn't the flu because I had a shot. As far as I am concerned I definitely have the dreaded lurgy. But I wanted to spare you all the symptoms, so I just used the generic term for it.

I'm in. Starting from a really low base, because I was not able (or allowed!) to exercise through most of pregnancy and then had to recover from a caesarean.

Yesterday: walked for more than 30 minutes. Today: walked around a shopping centre for two hours (tired now!).

The last few days I walked at least 15 hours, through malls, stores of all kinds, etc.  I needed things so I made it a point to do as much as possible on my days off.  I am still tired, lol.  I will go for a walk later today.  I am really looking forward to getting in better shape.

I'm in. Currently very unfit, but slightly better than I was a month ago due to heavy housework/ finishing some projects on the house. I am finally able to do more after a couple of years of back trouble.

Case in point: yesterday I hauled around a large amount of lumber followed by much sweeping. I let the Roomba do the mopping for me, though, but I think today I'll get in there with a clean sponge mop and wipe down the walls to get the last of the sawdust residue off.

I want to categorize my exercise in Floofs.  I guess to be accurate I should count Pearls (30 lbs).
I lifted 1 Pearl yesterday.  (As she is 12 yo and does not enjoy being lifted, that is probably it for the week.)

We expect heavy thunderstorms (flash flooding advisory) by noon today, so I think there will be only 1 trek to Internet rock (15 min total.)

Yesterday I did 20 of my exercises.  Today I shall aim to do 25.  I downloaded a "body weight exercises for women" ebook.  I believe I am not capable of doing any of them.

I need to think of something's to do inside the RV when it is raining.

Alleyway - I am very i pressedby 15 hours of walking.  Holy smokes.

Sam - if you jogged and did push-ups you rock.  And on top of that you ate?  Amazing!

I helped my sister paint her kitchen yesterday. There was a lot of climbing up and down a stepladder, and some occasional kneeling on counters. I am mildly sore today, so it clearly was exercise.

Do any of you guys use Fitbit or an app or a group (other than this little one🙂) to help track and motivate yourself?  Does it help?

Obs, the cheaper/free the better.  Vaguely considering a Fitbit to motivate myself.

Last year I was thinking of getting fitbit.  I changed my mind when old guy at my poker table told me that his wife made him get fitbit but he didn't mind be cause he moves his arm enough at the table that it thinks he walks ~1 mile every time he plays poker!

I wore a fitness tracker (microsoft's band) for about 2+ years. It really helped me judge how active I was being - especially with everyday exercise in life. I think it's easy to judge how much you move when you are doing a specific walk or hike. I found it harder to judge things like walking around in my building at work or taking a puppy outside for toilet-training 17 bajillion times a day.

I haven't been using a fitness tracker since the fall, and I think I need to get one again. I liked having something with a built-in GPS, because I am a nerd who loves data. But even a basic pedometer from a cereal box could help.

Yesterday, I did fewer Floof lifts and almost no carrying. There was some romping. I did take Floof to a pedestrian mall & feel like I did very little 'people' walking. I'm not really sure, though, and it would be nice to know.

I use the Fitbit charge 2. I like it to track my distances without having data on my phone. I get money back from Achievemint and points from Walgreens for miles (not that much but probably enough to pay for the Fitbit after a year or so).  Currently on my third device as the things do wear out after 1-2 years. It also can sync with diet apps like Lose It and My Fitness Pal if you are interested in calorie tracking. I find it motivating but studies have found a paradoxical effect because people feel like they are doing something good by wearing the tracker, so they eat more or exercise less.

Deborah, please be gentle during your dreaded lurgy!

Today I did laundry (walked to/from elevator 4 times?)
Did some filing
Heated soup
Moved between the sofa and bed.

I'm not normally THIS out of shape, but for this week it counts as exercise.

I am SO proud today!
I woke up with a migraine and did not feel well.
So I decided to try one of the Yoga videos instead of taking Exedrin.

It worked. After those 45 min I felt so much better, I started the second vidoe.
15 Minutes in my cat decided that was enough yoga (she usually just chills on her back when I do Yoga) and started meowing and nudging me for cuddles.
So I cuddled a bit with her and the TADAAAAA went for a walk 1 hour 40 Minutes! I was hot and sweaty, but it felt good!

Plus we decided to eat out tonight and walking to that restaurant is at least another 20 minutes each way!

Temporarily unfit here (pregnant, due in November). If I try to run I get an instant need to pee. Took DS for a long walk in his stroller, then cleaned my pool and swam a few laps ( not very mustachian but it came with the house, and it felt wonderful today). Got 11k steps today.

Twice parked way further away than necessary and walked the difference. It was extremely pleasant, got much more pleasure and relaxation and beautiful sightseeing out of the journey than I had if I'd parked closer.

FZ: Nice one!!!

Awesome thread!

I'd like to bring up that managing Fitness = Exercise + Fuel. Managing the fuel side can expedite the process! I used to graze a lot...out of boredom, or, more commonly, thirst. Being thirsty often masquerades as being hungry. So next time you feel the urge to nibble, try a big glass of water instead. Works wonders.

If you are feeling pensive or contemplative, going on a walk not only improves the mood and helps process thoughts, it shaves off a few more calories :)

Do any of you guys use Fitbit or an app or a group (other than this little one🙂) to help track and motivate yourself?

I used to, but it died, and I'm too cheap to get a new one. The only time i felt it was helpful was when I was close to my goal near the end of the day. I'd do laps around my house to get the last 200 steps or so. So that was 200 steps more than i would've taken without it. But on the whole, after the novelty wore off, no, it didn't really help motivate me.
