Our Emergency Reserves Plan addresses more than just unexpected cash flow "disturbances" that could be resolved with money. Our Plan also addresses "catastrophe" type emergencies. And part of our reserves to address that is a multi-month canned and dry foods stash. So, eating down the food in our house is a non-starter for us.
However, we do "eat to rotate" the emergency stores, so that they don't go out of date.
(And, for those who are ready to jump in scoffing at this type of emergency planning, let me just say that I have lived through multi-week emergencies due to hurricanes, snow storms, and political/civil disturbances when food stores were NOT OPEN. So it is not all in my head. :O)
