Buy Nothing New Novemeber
« on: October 20, 2012, 12:58:18 AM »
Loads of you super cool MMM'ers probably do this already. But I (secretly) am going to do Christmas this way too. Yep, a second hand, made myself kind of Christmas :) Yes, with two small children! shhhhh, Santa won't know.

http://www.buynothingnew.com.au/home/

Yes, groceries are allowed in this challenge. And officially I am a late starter. However, the 11 days I have left of October are my 'training' days. November is the month I am choosing to complete this challenge in. I'll be cashing in store cards during this time in October, so not everything I buy for Christmas will be second hand.

Sounds like it fits into the MMM life style quite well. I'm thinking thrifty and cool, vintage and fun. I'm thinking garage sales, re gifting, ebay, op shops. FUN, FUN, FUN.... ok, this IS my idea of fun.

Who would like to join this "throw down the gauntlet" challenge?

I think I can play along too, except for previous commitments. We're already down for Thanksgiving dinner with family at a restaurant. And I promised my girlfriend I'd buy her slippers. (Clearly we plan our spending WAY in advance.)

Other than that, I can't think of a darn thing I just have to have. Funny how non-spending is a game for us.

Haven't found a good way to buy clothes second hand yet. Sadly I will probably need to shop around thanksgiving for winter stuff because I only packed summer clothes (except for 2 sweaters, but no coat) when I relocated in May. Oops.

That's an awesome challenge, so count my family in. Hmmm....have a baby girl due 12/15. I've heard of not getting used car seats though...

At any rate - my wife and I are ready to throw down.

DocCayne- sounds great. I think you can count those 'pre-challenge' commitments out of the challenge. It's better to do a challenge 95% rather than not do it at all :) Yeah, I'm with you, when I sit still I can't think of anything we actually need. But Christmas is ahead and I think this is a great challenge to get ready for Christmas.

Paul Der Krake- I've found Loads of ways on buying great second hand clothes. Thinking Op-shops, second hand shops, ebay. I'm sure if you look hard enough you will find something really cool to suit you. Honestly, this is a great way to buy clothes, because only the best clothes make it to the op shop. That is, those that have been made so well that they last the test of time. Particularly if you need a whole seasons wardrobe, I'd be looking into this. Check it out. I'm happy to help you with op shop suggestions and tips if you like to make the process easier.

A couple of years ago, a very pregnant me and my hubby decided to go to the spring horse races. We choose our clobber from an op shop, and loved the result. Spending around $20 all up, we had our outfits and looked very cool. Another benefit is that it isn't like those "where's wally" books when you can see other people dressed the same as you. You almost always find something unique.

inthebiz- What a great challenge to prepare for a baby :) Yes, car seats can be an issue. However, it really does depend on who is selling. My baby-toddler seat is practically as good as when I brought it, has had no accidents and I still have all the books/paperwork for it. It's now almost 6years old. However, if I have a third bubba, I won't be rushing out for a new seat. If you look, you will probably find some great baby bargains. Second hand IS the way to go with baby gear. So exciting!!!! Yes, I'm clucky. A few suggestions on why second hand is a good idea for a new bub;

Cot- They start climbing out of it before they can walk, this is dangerous. Moved to a bed by 18months tops in our house. I wouldn't spend $1k on a bedroom suite for myself, let alone if I was going to 'grow' out of it in 18months.

Pram- Ditched the big pram that took up all the boot space leaving groceries to be stashed between children. By around 8mths of age, I found it easier to have an umbrella stroller and I carried my babies in a stretchy wrap/baby carrier. They aren't worth hundreds for such a short space of time.

Clothes- Simple is good. Stretchy suits. Yes, nice to have new but by bub #2 I learned that it was easier to reuse what I had for bub#1 just simply because they are already washed ready to go. This meant they didn't smell like that horrid chemical they put on clothes to make sure they don't grow mold. Lazy I know... but far easier. They grow out of clothes every 2- 3 months.

Just a few examples and reasoning of why I think second hand is actually better.

I'm in. Between work and school, it's not like I have much time to think up things I need to buy anyway!

I am excluding buying vegetable seeds from this challenge, as well as seed potatoes and the like. We don't celebrate Christmas, so that is a big expense side-stepped. As for thanks-giving, our family tradition is to bring something you made from scratch, so no big issues there. I have been meaning to buy another pair or two of pants, but those will be from the secondhand store anyway.

We'll see what comes up during the month.

I have bought shoes on eBay before, when I know my size for specific brand. Are you in Australia/NZ? Because I had never heard the term "op shop" before and had to look it up. In England, the charity shops (same thing), are used mostly for clothes that their original owners find ugly, and for good reason. If you are looking for kids toys, on the other hand, best place ever.

In the US I have found nice things at Goodwill from time to time but it's always tshirts or accessories for halloween costumes and theme parties. It probably doesn't help that I buy only clothes that fit perfectly (I blame my mother) and tend to go for the upscale stuff, at least for tops. But I have good hope of finding a coat. They are durable and people want new ones for no reason, so I'm hoping a couple will be donated to Goodwill.

I'm already working on my Christmas shopping mustachian style planning. I have a spreadsheet, a list of gift certificates/groupons I've already purchased and just need to use, and ideas for gift giving. Since I've previously done all store bought gifts (and expensive, extensive ones at that), this year I'll mix it up and do some store bought and some homemade.

We'll be having a chat with our kids to adjust expectations. Besides, they will still receive gifts from grandparents (2 sets) and aunts/uncles/cousins (2 sets). That will be plenty.  Plus, they will both have just had birthdays as well. They don't need anything. I've also had discussions with both sets of parents about downsizing Christmas, so it won't be a big shock. The Hubs' parents are downsizing their budgets for everyone. For the grandchildren, they will be spending half on gifts and contributing half to 529 accounts. This, I think, is a fabulous idea.

I need to talk to the Hubs, but we may do a $10 limit for each other. We don't need anything either, but the kids enjoy watching us open our gifts as well. So, perhaps the $10 will be for gifts they purchase with the other parent for the other parent from all three. They also make gifts for us at school that they put under the tree. (These are my favorites, anyway.)

I've even thrown out the idea of scaling down on holiday decorations. I love our Christmas tree (fake due to the Hubs' allergies), but do we really need a 7 foot one? I'm thinking a smaller one is sufficient and we can also downsize the ornaments and other decorations. We could sell the tree and excess ornaments and get a smaller pre-lit tree on CL. We spend Christmas morning at home and then hit the road for my parents' house and then the Hubs' parents house. Plus, a smaller tree will be "filled up" with fewer presents underneath.

I think simplifying is going to be the theme for this year.

Paul D Krake- I hope you find the perfect winter coat :) Yes, I'm Aussie. Op shops = Opportunity shops = charity stores = second hand stores. I haven't found that people give things to charity because they are ugly, some people tend to 'update' every season, and give donations, some people have a cupboard clean out, some just buy things that they think are nice on them at the time, but actually would suit someone else better.

Kkbmustang- We 'do' Christmas, but no Thanks giving here. We have had a few years of tight Christmases, so family do understand. Holiday decorations are sorted for us. We don't buy a new tree every year. Probably every 10 years here. I brought a new one last year after Christmas, and all new decorations to go with it. In total it cost me $5, because there was a store voucher that I used as being part of the store 'club'. They discounted everything, and I thought why not as the last time I put my tree back in it's box I realized that it probably has lost more foliage than it now has on it. Use what you have has always been my moto.

Anyway, we may not even get to use the tree this year. We might just go camping over Christmas instead. This would mean carting minimal presents, and those that we can use on the trip. It also means that my tiny 30cm table top tree would be fine.... along with a heap of decorations for the Van (mostly home made by children). Christmas isn't about how the end product looks to us but how much fun you have creating those decorations along the way.

I'm thinking things like x-rental DVD's, op shop board games and chess sets, vintage mixing bowels and cook books, second hand photo frames and pictures of my children, I even spied a $9 bike at an op shop the other day would be great for DD. Feel free to help me think of more second hand presents, I'd really appreciate it.

I love these threads. This weekend I read Amy Dacyzyn's The Complete Tightwad Gazette (courtesy of our library). All 959 pages of it. It has post-its all over the place. I might see if I can find a used copy at a local used bookstore, that's how much I liked it.  She really got me thinking. :)

To up the ante: Buy nothing new in November, AND either sell an item every day or earn extra money on top of my normal salary.

Babysitting/dogsitting gigs? For this month, I'm always available. List more clothes on eBay? Every single day, baby. I know Christmas is coming up, and I know I'll end up with more stuff by the end of December, so why not prepare now and get rid of things I don't need? In fact, whatever extra money I earn in November will be my holiday gift-giving budget.

Any other takers??

NoFool- I've got your back on this one. I'm totally in. In fact, I'd like to notch it even higher.

I will purchase all gifts and/or materials for Christmas gifts (unless already purchased, such as my Body Works groupon) only with money I have earned by selling something else on ebay or Craig'sList (etc.).

Whoo Doggy, I like this challenge.

Brilliant ideas people. I'm a little bit enthused about this challenge.... what to sell, what to sell.... garage sale anyone, ebay listings, sounds brilliant.

Some things I'm very reluctant to part with, but not sure yet. May just have to make room for another little one, but find enough room to stash some baby stuff.

Count me in for this one.  I will buy nothing new, and work on selling unused items.

I am making several handmade gifts.  Boxes of handmade cards for friends, scrapbook of our dream trip for my husband, another scrapbook for my niece and nephew who stayed with us for a week this summer, and a crocheted afghan in my duaghter's favorite color.

Even my kids are getting in on this one.  My son would like us to get him an iPod and I told him absolutely not.  Now he is looking at selling thie Nintendo DS lite and all the games, plus books and videos that he no longer has any interest in.  My guess is that once he sees how hard he has to work to take care of everything (he will have to post his own listings and handle shipping) he will decide not to part with 'his' money.  I get a double bonus-keep my own stache and have less kid clutter in the house.  My girls just like to get rid of things and put the money aside.  My oldest daughter is a freshman in high school and she said she is saving it all for college.

I'm in!  Already started our Christmas shopping in October and swore I would be finished before Thanksgiving.  I almost never shop anyway, but occasionally have to go out and buy something at the home improvement store for a project.  We are getting better about trying to complete home projects by reusing materials we already have.  In November we'll just have to flex those muscles a bit more!

Hello, almost ready to go?

It's the 31st of October over here. That means the official part of this challenge starts tomorrow.

Excited, and slightly scared about doing this challenge. But hey, bound to learn lots along the way.

I just posted over in the Sale a Day November thread. Today I sold a flute for $450 and a piccolo for $300 on ebay.  The piccolo has been paid for by that buyer and I'm waiting for payment on the flute. There will be ebay, paypal and shipping fees that will be deducted from that, but not a bad day at all.

For me... it's time to get serious.
My goal today is to list 10 things on ebay and 5 things on a local face book page.
As well as make 5 gifts for Christmas.

Big goal for today, with two little ones sick, but it's better to reach too high than to reach too low to help achieve as much as possible.

Well I didn't reach the 15 items up for grabs yet, but I have listed 4 on ebay, starting to get ready for garage sale and my DD's tap shoes are up at the local ballet school for sale. I've also made 5 presents, inspired from www.shinyhappyart.com I made 5 emergency cookie jars up.

So far so good, I've brought a couple of things that I needed (like electric and hand beaters) but I did pick them up from a second hand shop. The electric beaters were checked by an electrician before sale, to ensure saftey. And I think mine that has the plastic coating missing from some wires is probably not safe at all.

All going well over here :)

A few times I've had to think, then rethink things through rather than purchase something. My MIL is soon to have her birthday, and I've been thrifty in what I'll be giving. My DD has also brought her Nan a gift, straight from her heart and chosen for her. It's a silver necklace with a clover like drop. Wrapped up in a cute bononarie (sp?) circle trimmed in silver, tied up with some cross stitch cotton, and a home made gift card attached.

I'll also be giving some pillows (as new) as a gift.

I've been clearing out all the crevices of the house, getting rid of things, listing things on ebay, and also getting ready for a garage sale. Should be good.

I think I can easily do Christmas on a very small budget :)

I had been doing well, but had to buy scrubs for my new job.  I didn't have time to look around before but I now found a shop that sells used scrubs.

At least I only bought one new pair.

On the plus side, my kids want a basketball hoop for Christmas and I think I found one on Craigslist!

Ok, so my hair clippers have been on the frits. So I would "like" to buy a new pair. So I'm either

a) fix them
b) hold out until December and buy a new pair

Other items I've considered purchasing.

  • new crankset for my bike
  • pair of gloves

nothing I can't live without.

Hi StashinIt :)

Just thinking. My grandfather and his brother used to cut each others hair. Since they were small. My father In law, cuts his hair as well as his sons. I've cut DH's hair many a time, with varied success (roll eyes) and he has cut mine. I've also cut my children's hair. Then there is of course the times where Dh has done odd jobs for a friend of ours who is a hair dresser for a free haircut or two. Are any of your family members able to cut your hair for you? There are many, many ways to get around this small challenge.

Just wondering, I'm a bit clueless to this boys stuff mind you. I'm a girl, so a little easier. I just avoid cutting it and it grows. Easy. Occasionally it gets a trim.

I bought these clippers about 5 years ago for 20 bucks at target. They still work, they just pull my hair now instead of cut it. So I have to go over it multiple times. 1st world problems I know! Anyway, my hair is cut and I only cut it every 4-6 weeks anyway. My plan is to take the clippers apart, give them a good cleaning and see if that fixes it.

My wife will absolutely not cut my hair anymore since I wasn't nice to her one time when she was doing it :-( Some of my other friends cut their own hair, we could probably make it into a social event. Most guys aren't very social and like to be self reliant.

Oh, fell off the bandwagon over here. Decided to have a camping holiday and took the opportunity to buy some camping gear. Still free camp site, and relatively close to home to travel costs are at a minimum. But yeah, fell off. I brought an aqua cube and some lights. Aqua cube, run out last years model at a huge discount. Couldn't resist. I've wanted one for over a year. We are going bush, well more beach than bush. No electricity, no running water, bare bones facilities. But they do have drop toilets, also known as pit toilets. Not sure how that translates to American.

It's our champagne holiday on a beer, ok...... maybe soft drink budget.

Got to get back on track, and stop being a consumer.

Well it has been an up and down ride, lots of ups and a few downs. But November is almost over.
Christmas presents are coming together.
My jeans have had it! Few too many holes I'm afraid. Because I'm a jeans kinda girl.
A few oops moments where I have purchased new.
But all in all, I think this challenge has opened my eyes to just how much we are exposed to the advertising of stuff, and how many messages we get to be a consumer every day. Until it is tested, I don't think I realised it was that bad.

I'm still going to try to think about every purchase and if it is really necessary. But I'm going to step back slightly.

How did everyone else go?

Other than Christmas gifts purchased with money earned by selling stuff, we didn't buy anything new here. We bought food and necessities, but nothing else.

My son sold an electronics item for $75 on CraigsList and with a gift card from his birthday he bought something at Gamestop and my daughter bought a few books with her own money. Other than that, I told my kids they weren't allowed to buy anything with their money until after Christmas.

Oh, wait. We did buy gifts for the Salvation Army Angel Tree kids. We adopted two. Not sure if that counts as buying stuff since it wasn't for us and was a charitable donation.

At any rate, that's all from us in November.

For November we did pretty good. There were a couple of items we though of that would be "nice" to buy. I already mentioned the hair clippers. Additionally I was wanting some knee warmers, and my wife wanted a Christmas outfit for our baby (Christmas cards). We passed on all of these purchases and even got the Christmas cards mailed out :-)

We did, however, buy a Christmas tree and wreath. The tree is actually just a potted rosemary plant cut like a Christmas tree. We'll plant it in patio and have free rosemary after the holiday. This cost us $60.

I failed. I picked up a x-mass present for my brother during the Steam Thanksgiving Sale. I also bought the Humble Bundle for myself (but gave all the money to charity). This was a good challange.
