Aug 2021 Goals

Everyone is welcome to join in! Great for anyone who needs a productivity boost or extra accountability.

  • Physical Therapy 15/31 days
  • Buy epoxy (done 8/1) and fix All The Things Done 8/2
  • Finish scotchguarding the couch
  • Determine annual savings goal (better late than never!) Done 8/1 - easier than I thought
  • Put tablecloth back on desk & reposition all computer equipment Done 8/2
  • Update pantry spreadsheet On track
  • Meal plan
  • Contemplate the nature of happiness
  • Brainstorm "ideal average" day or week
  • Pay additional income tax + penalty (done 8/1) & adjust fed/state withholdings

This was really successful in July - so going to keep it going for August

1) Read 4 books
2) Do 155 000 steps this month
3) 1 week - 0 trash / 0 food purchase - 1 - 7 August.
4) Complete decluttering the final bedroom so we can repair the roof.
5) Buy the sinks, faucets and counter so we can complete last years project - aiming to get the contractor in September.
6) Loose 2 pounds (have way more than this to loose).
7) Stay Quit smoking - 11 days quit so far

I'm in. Other than moving, I haven't felt super productive or Mustachian this year, so it's time to reset some habits.

  • No online shopping or online purchases
  • No more than 1 hour of "recreational" internet usage per day
  • Complete 401k and HSA rollovers
  • Use the Home Gym at least 4 times/week
  • Practice guitar for at least 15 minutes each day
  • Finish at least 2 novels

July was lots of travel, got back last night from a trip. Working next week, then another short trip w/the kids, then back to school/work.
For August, several of my goals will be "did not happen in July (some have actually been on several months)", and I really want to complete them this month.


Please note I use a color scheme that differs a bit form most in this thread.
Blue = good progress
Orange = at risk
Red = did not happen
Green = completed

  • Focus goal: Finish the will.
  • Focus goal: Sort out the living room. Make it nice for me.
  • Yoga 10 times.
  • Strength exercises 10 times.
  • Runwalk 4 times.
  • Start on sorting out in-apartment storage.
  • Sort out the kitchen: Empty out and rearrange kitchen cupboards.
  • Pack for the final summer trip well in advance, and make sure to not overpack. Adjust summer packing list during the packing.
  • Plan rest of 2021. Esp. health/food/exercise and money.
  • Walk 248 000 steps.
  • During trip - focus on my life/do not let other people (J&J and mum) upset me (as I know they will). I decide on how I want to live and do things.
  • Work on paper clutter.
  • Work on reducing/organizing photos. Preferrably 2*15 min/week.
  • Turn off phone before 11 pm if working next day.
  • Start planning project X. Educate myself, create budget, research market.

A lot, as in most months for me, but I think kind of realistic. Quite a few are smaller in time and effort, others are lofty.

August is my last month of working before my gap year (mini retirement) so I need to get some stuff done.

Health:
1. Complete Beginner Strength program on Peloton app
2. Continue to bring lunch to work every day
3. Complete final medical appointments (while I still have plush insurance)

Money:
1. Pad savings another $2k
2. Put at least $3k in investments
3. Live on mini-retirement budget (test drive)

School start up- both kids are starting high school (yikes!)
1. Review all docs from new school (I've been procrastinating!)
2. Clothing and supply inventory

For August:

1. Drag the two GIANT boxes of old photos out of my closet, sort, purge, and organize them, and get them into archival pages and no more than two albums.
2. Trash/gift/donate 10 items from closet that are not being used and taking up space.
3. Sell 10 items from my collection that I have no intentions of displaying and are just taking up closet/storage space. (I've always been a collector, but I'm trying to be more focused than ever before on what I collect/own/maintain. So anything that I have no intention of displaying I eventually want to sell and roll that money into something else).
4. Exercise with the wife every Monday-Friday. Walking Mon., Wed., Fri., and HIIT training on Tues. and Thurs.
5. Dine out 4 times or less in August.

Week one, and what a week it was.  Very busy at work, but still a few high points for goals.  And some low points, too.

General:
1. Read
  a. At least 4 books total - 4/4 - finished faster than normal, due to several books that I was already partway done at the beginning of the month.
  b. 1 Nonfiction book - 1/1
  c. 2 from TBR list - 4/2
2. Keep House Tidy (target 15/31) - 3/6
3. Exercise or Walk Outside (target 25/31) - 1/6 - had some neck and back soreness for a few days, probably from getting used to a new pillow, so I avoided exercise.

Selling House:
4. Keep Yard Tidy (2/month) - None yet
5. Respond to Inspection (when received) - Expecting to receive today
6. Close on Sale?!? - Scheduled end of the month, if the buyers don't back out

Settling in Apartment:
7. Buy/Build Bookshelf - Found it in stock and managed to get one, yay!  Hoping to assemble over the weekend.

Feed Sourdough (3/week) - Sadly my sourdough starter has met its demise.  Checked it to feed this week and found little worms swimming in it.  Not sure if they were some kind of weevil from the flour, or I didn't seal it right and a fly got in to lay eggs.  Boo.  Will go back to baker's yeast for a while, maybe start a new starter in the future.

-write 30 pages (novel)--fell off this week, will get back to it
-get art photos printed (bonus if they get framed as well)--printed but haven't picked them up yet
-pay off line-of-credit ($2000) --paid off $1100 so far
-3 big hikes- have done 2 so far
-1 self-care/week --received a massage this week, which was SO great
-no IG/FB--did one IG post but otherwise mostly staying off

I have been travelling most of the week, which messes things up at bit, but I have been eating pretty well, and walking a lot more than I expected.

  • Yoga 10 times. 0 so far. No progress this week either.
  • Strength exercises 10 times 4 times + follow 30 days program. 2 done + on track. Missed one day, but was driving for several hours and just forgot. Will not put this a fail if making all the others.
  • Runwalk 4 times. I have done 4 so far, one was w/kid so not perfet, but absolutely good enough to count.
  • Start on sorting out in-apartment storage. No progress but this is planned to happen after 19th.

It was not perfect "in advance" but the things I packed was good, we had what we needed and not oo much. Saw some things the other family had, and so glad I did not bring that much stuff..

Mid-Month check in:

For August:

I got the boxes out and now have a 9' folding table completely covered about 2"-12" deep with photos. I have spent a couple hours sorting but there's a long way to go.
2. Trash/gift/donate 10 items from closet that are not being used and taking up space. I'm at 5 so far. Half way there!
3. Sell 10 items from my collection that I have no intentions of displaying and are just taking up closet/storage space. (I've always been a collector, but I'm trying to be more focused than ever before on what I collect/own/maintain. So anything that I have no intention of displaying I eventually want to sell and roll that money into something else). I've sold 6 of 10 so far and I'm net $591.00 after shipping/eBay fee's.
4. Exercise with the wife every Monday-Friday. Walking Mon., Wed., Fri., and HIIT training on Tues. and Thurs. Did not happen. We've missed 3 of 11 week days so far. Still better than last month.
5. Dine out 4 times or less in August. Did not happen. It's mid-month and we're already at 5, although we spent more on one meal last month than all five this month.

Week 3 update

-daily yoga (minimum 20 min)--nope, have been avoiding the yoga
-walking (weekly average of 7000 steps/day)--averaged 9631 this week
-15 no-spend days (or under $5)--a big spending week but had a few days with no expenditures
-write 30 pages (novel)--nope!
-get art photos printed (bonus if they get framed as well)--printed and picked up
-pay off line-of-credit ($2000) --paid off $1200 so far
-3 big hikes- YES, did a huge hike this week and have another planned
-1 self-care/week --forgot about this,will need to double down :)
-no IG/FB--was on a few times, will recommit to staying off this last week of the month

Week 2

1) Read 4 books - I have not started but I have 14 hours on a plane between now and August 31 - surprise 50th birthday
2) Do 155 000 steps this month - 104 000 so far this month - I got this!
3) 1 week - 0 trash / 0 food purchase - 1 - 7 August. - Success! So much easier when one lives alone. -Done
4) Complete decluttering the final bedroom so we can repair the roof.
5) Buy the sinks, faucets and counter so we can complete last years project - We got the 250lb vanity up the stair's without dying - does that count? - aiming to get the contractor in September.
6) Loose 2 pounds (have way more than this to loose). 1lb down
7) Stay Quit smoking - 32 days quit so far

It has been a busy week and a good weekend. Main progress is the in-apartment storage, it is like a walk in closet, mainly clothes and shoes, but also a lot of other storage things (medicin, wrapping paper, all my sewingfabric). I have also been physically active, walking a lot, some running, strength exercises and today some swimming. I am impressed by myself, I have never been a sporty person.


Please note I use a color scheme that differs a bit form most in this thread.

  • Focus goal: Finish the will. It's printed and at home with me, I need two persons to act as witnesses. I hope my neighbours are back this week so they can do it.
  • Focus goal: Sort out the living room. Make it nice for me. It's better again but was used when sorting out the storage area and not completely in order yet
  • Yoga 10 times. 0 so far. Nothing this week either.
  • Strength exercises 10 times 4 times + follow 30 days program. 3 done + on track.
  • Runwalk 4 times. I have done 4 5 so far, one was w/kid so not perfet, but absolutely good enough to count.
  • Start on sorting out in-apartment storage. So much progress during the weekend! It is not perfect, but I tried on a lot of clothes, and found a lot I can wear for work. Also deluttered, got rid of a lot of crap and put things in order. I still have stuff in kiddos room to take care of before Thursday, and it will happen.
  • Sort out the kitchen: Empty out and rearrange kitchen cupboards. Still no progress, need to complete the storage area.
  • Pack for the final summer trip well in advance, and make sure to not overpack. Adjust summer packing list during the packing. It was not perfect "in advance" but the things I packed was good, we had what we needed and not oo much. Saw some things the other family had, and so glad I did not bring that much stuff..
  • Plan rest of 2021. Esp. health/food/exercise and money. Started but not much more. Will do during holiday. Not much progress, but some good thinking.
  • Walk 248 000 steps.
  • During trip - focus on my life/do not let other people (J&J and mum) upset me (as I know they will). I decide on how I want to live and do things. Yes this happened as I thought it would, esp w/J, but I did not let it get to me. Felt like I was the true winner as one thing I got criticized about turned out to be better my way :-). Yes, I may be petty but I'll take it.
  • Work on paper clutter.
  • Work on reducing/organizing photos. Preferrably 2*15 min/week. Almost no progress so far, a bit worrying.
  • Turn off phone before 11 pm if working next day.
  • Start planning project X. Educate myself, create budget, research market. Some progress here, it will cost a lot of money so I have to prioritize.

Can't believe it's another week gone already!  This year is going by so fast.

General:

2. Keep House Tidy (target 15/31) - 13/27 - Brought it up enough this week that I think I can hit the target.
3. Exercise or Walk Outside (target 25/31) - 15/27 - Did well this week.  Aiming to finish out strong, even though I can't make target.

Selling House:
4. Keep Yard Tidy (2/month) - 1/2, Meh, not feeling very motivated on this.  Should probably try for once more anyway.

Final report for August  - result for the whole month. All in all a very good month. I have made progress in the apartment (decluttering and some organizing). I have also exercised, eaten pretty well and lost some weight.

  • No online shopping or online purchases -- fail. I did shop less and make significantly fewer purchases, but I did make 2 purchases due to significant sales
  • No more than 1 hour of "recreational" internet usage per day -- success!
  • Complete 401k and HSA rollovers -- success!
  • Use the Home Gym at least 4 times/week -- fail. I worked out more and went on 2 hikes, but I was apparently too lazy to use the home gym?
  • Practice guitar for at least 15 minutes each day -- fail. I did practice more frequently, but only did so for 19 days
  • Finish at least 2 novels -- success! I completed 2 novels and DNF'ed another after reading 300 pages.
