2024 Finished:
January
1. My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman (I like Backman books. This one was fine but did not work as well as others have for me)
2. A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham (meh. I had mostly figured out where things were headed early on and kept reading to see if I was correct.)
3. Dune by Frank Herbert (Sci Fi, I really liked the first half, lost me a bit toward the end)
4. Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay (I LOVED this. Historical fantasy set in the Tang dynasty [names, including country/dynasty changed in the book, but that is the one])
5. The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrick Backman (Turned out this is just a short story)
6. Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert (SciFi, I am not loving Dune... if I like the third one even less, I might have to just read the synopsis for the rest!)
7. Spare by Prince Harry (Memoir, if half of this was true, I do feel sorry for him, but man this entire book was an whiney, petty, woe is me tale.)
February
8. All Sinners Bleed by S.A. Crosby (So good! Crime/Thriller about a Black Sheriff in a small southern town... murder, torture, racism, religion... this book touches on a lot of heavy subjects)
9. The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi (Enjoyable read. SciFi, quick, light, fun...)
10. Family Meal by Bryan Washington (Heavy read about love and grief, lust and loss, family and relationships ... I liked it, but it was a challenging read for me due to the format)
11. And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman (also heavy, also about love, loss, grief, family, but also nothing like the above book. Good, short)
12: Children of Dune by Frank Herbert (SciFi, I liked this one! I'm in it to the end of the six book arc now)
13. God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert (SciFi, also good!)
14. Three-inch Teeth by C.J. Box (Mystery, I've been reading Joe Pickett novels since they came out... each year they feel more repetitive and more in need of a good editor, but I still come back)
March
15. North Woods by Daniel Mason (Historical Fiction, Not sure I have anything to add to the multitude of accolades for this one, but it is a really enjoyable read.)
16. Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert (SciFi, Fine. Aiming to finish the arc really)
17. Yellowface by R.F. Kuang (Fiction? Satire?, I liked this, I found it engaging, but... I read where a critique said it occasionally lack nuance and I agree. Occasionally that took me out of the story.
April
18. Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby (Crime/Thriller, SO GOOD. Black father and white father min the rural south try to find the murders of their sons.)
19. The Storm We Made by Vanessa Chan (Historical Fiction, WWII story of the Japanese invasion of Malay. Engaging but heart breaking)
20. Blacktop Wasteland by S.A. Cosby (Crime/Thriller, least satisfying of Cosby's books for me, but still a great read as the main character wrestles with who he wants to be... the family man/business owner or the man not he wrong side of the law)
21. The Umpire Strikes Back by Ron Luciano (Memoir, fun book full of baseball stories)
