...

Otherwise Remarkably Bright Creatures really is as pleasant and basic as everyone says and it the one book from the month that I would recommend to anyone who wants a cozy read.

...

I'm almost done this one, and have found it to be lovely. I thought that the character's perspectives were really well occupied - when a chapter was told from one person's point of view, the observed facts were really consistently through their lens, and that was really thought provoking.

20 more, favourites markes.

121. Ghost Walk by Cassandra Gannon
122. Warrior from the Shadowland by Cassandra Gannon
123. On Old Age and On Friendship by Cicero
124. Letters by Cicero
125. Letters by Pliny the Younger
126. The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North
127. Our Moon: How Earth's Celestial Companion Transformed the Planet, Guided Evolution, and Made Us Who We Are by Rebecca Boyle
128. The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland

129. What a Fish Knows: The Inner Lives of Our Underwater Cousins by Jonathan Balcombe
This is the best nonfiction book I've read this year. Engaging, excellent writing, and just super interesting.

130. Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
131. A Brief History of Timekeeping: The Science of Marking Time, from Stonehenge to Atomic Clocks by Chad Orzel

132. All This Twisted Glory by Tahereh Mafi
The latest installment in one of my all-time favourite desert/djinn fantasy series. I can't put these books down.

133. Guardian of the Earth House by Cassandra Gannon
134. The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin
135. The Briar Book of the Dead by A.G. Slatter
136. The Patient Assassin: A True Tale of Massacre, Revenge, and India's Quest for Independence by Anita Anand
137. What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher
138. Exile in the Water Kingdom by Cassandra Gannon
139. The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett
140. Lives by Plutarch

At this point I am solely reading new releases by authors I already follow, and books for my various challenges. I surprisingly have zero slots left for anything else in a typical week now! My weekly list is 1-2 volumes of Harvard Classics, one nonfiction, one backlog, seven chapters of The Daily Stoic, and whatever new releases roll in at the library. The challenges are all going pretty well, anyways:

1. I have read The Daily Stoic daily.
2. Straight numbers: 140/365
3. Harvard Classics: 18/71 Volumes (which is 39 individual books, as the books/volumes ratio is all over the place - so far one volume contained nine books, and another single book was spread over two entire volumes, for example)
4. Nonfiction: 14/50
5. Backlog: 16/~60

29. The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb-also really good even though I correctly guessed who the culprit was right away

30. Parasol Against the Axe by Helen Oyeyemi-a bit too avant-garde for me although some of the stories-within-the story were good

31. The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin-Parody about "beach read" genre tropes. It was short and I laughed a few times.

32. Prophet Song by Paul Lynch- Stark reminder that we are all one bad election map away from total chaos. Very well done but I recommend it only if you are in the right headspace. whew.

33. A true account: 'Hannah Masury's sojourn amongst the pyrates, written by herself' by Katherine Howe -needed to read something light and entertaining after Prophet Song

34. Confessions of a Recovering Engineer: Transportation for a Strong Town by Charles Marohn (audio book)- follow up to Strong Towns with an emphasis on transportation. I listened to this while driving so saw his point in real time.

35. Fourteen Days by multiple authors (edited by Margaret Atwood and Douglas Preston)
-Short stories by 36 authors within a frame narrative.  I really liked the twist at the end.

This year has started off really well. These first few books have created change in my daily physical and spiritual practice.

Books #4 and #5 are 2 of the best books I've ever read possibly in life.

1. Think Like a Monk   Jay Shetty (I'm having a hard time believing he lives like a monk or even wrote this book)
2. Comfort Crisis  Michael Easter
3. Scarcity Brain  Michael Easter
4. 4000 Weeks: Time Management for Mortals   Oliver Burkeman (planning to read again)

6. Radically Condensed Instructions for Being Just as You Are    J. Matthews
7. Ego is the Enemy  Ryan Holiday (it's thought provoking, and also kinda "meh".)

I'm very happy to say this is my third-best month of reading ever (and best since February 2018 when I was on a one-month expat rotation to India with little ability to leave the hotel). I'm also surprised to look back and see that I'm at half nonfiction for the year so far - some of the nonfiction has been real page turners, but some of it has dragged, while I feel like all of the fiction has gone easily and effortlessly so I expected it would be a bigger share of the total.

Previous years: 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2023

@Serendip I thought I was reading my own list here! I'd be curious to hear what you thought of David Brook's book - I think I read it last year but it was pretty impactful for me.

Too funny @erp -- we must have similar interests, in that case I will take any recommendations (although I do have a pile of books to read) :)

To be honest, I didn't really love How to Know a Person and that was in part b/c of a book which I read beforehand (Bring Me the Rhinoceros), which was ridiculous and interesting to me (Zen koans) that David Brook's book seemed too safe somehow. But I know many people loved his book and glad you received some good insight from it!

2024 Finished:

January
1. My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman (I like Backman books. This one was fine but did not work as well as others have for me)
2. A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham (meh. I had mostly figured out where things were headed early on and kept reading to see if I was correct.)
3. Dune by Frank Herbert (Sci Fi, I really liked the first half, lost me a bit toward the end)
4. Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay (I LOVED this. Historical fantasy set in the Tang dynasty [names, including country/dynasty changed in the book, but that is the one])
5. The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrick Backman (Turned out this is just a short story)
6. Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert (SciFi, I am not loving Dune... if I like the third one even less, I might have to just read the synopsis for the rest!)
7. Spare by Prince Harry (Memoir, if half of this was true, I do feel sorry for him, but man this entire book was an whiney, petty, woe is me tale.)
February
8. All Sinners Bleed by S.A. Crosby (So good! Crime/Thriller about a Black Sheriff in a small southern town... murder, torture, racism, religion... this book touches on a lot of heavy subjects)
9. The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi (Enjoyable read. SciFi, quick, light, fun...)
10. Family Meal by Bryan Washington (Heavy read about love and grief, lust and loss, family and relationships ... I liked it, but it was a challenging read for me due to the format)
11. And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman (also heavy, also about love, loss, grief, family, but also nothing like the above book. Good, short)
12: Children of Dune by Frank Herbert (SciFi, I liked this one! I'm in it to the end of the six book arc now)
13. God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert (SciFi, also good!)
14. Three-inch Teeth by C.J. Box (Mystery, I've been reading Joe Pickett novels since they came out... each year they feel more repetitive and more in need of a good editor, but I still come back)
March
15. North Woods by Daniel Mason (Historical Fiction, Not sure I have anything to add to the multitude of accolades for this one, but it is a really enjoyable read.)
16. Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert (SciFi, Fine. Aiming to finish the arc really)
17. Yellowface by R.F. Kuang (Fiction? Satire?, I liked this, I found it engaging, but... I read where a critique said it occasionally lack nuance and I agree. Occasionally that took me out of the story.
April
18. Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby (Crime/Thriller, SO GOOD. Black father and white father min the rural south try to find the murders of their sons.)
19. The Storm We Made by Vanessa Chan (Historical Fiction, WWII story of the Japanese invasion of Malay. Engaging but heart breaking)
20. Blacktop Wasteland by S.A. Cosby (Crime/Thriller, least satisfying of Cosby's books for me, but still a great read as the main character wrestles with who he wants to be... the family man/business owner or the man not he wrong side of the law)
21. The Umpire Strikes Back by Ron Luciano (Memoir, fun book full of baseball stories)

Currently reading:

Audio: A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson
Print: Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin

I enjoyed it! Not fantastic writing by any means, but an interesting story. I had watched the first season of the show already, and as usual, I liked the book a lot more. The show writers actually changed a lot of key plot points.

15. Prophet Song by Paul Lynch - A mostly excellent book. I found the writing could grate and the protagonist was really hard to empathize with after a while, but easily my favourite new read of the year.

16. An Unwanted Inheritance by Imogen Clark - Airport book junk.

17. The Innocence of Father Brown by GK Chesterton - A collection of short detective stories ala Poirot Investigates but different in that these are well-written.

It's looking like I probably won't make 50 completed, but probably will if including DNFs. Or I could fudge my TBR list and prioritize books that I'm more likely to finish, but that feels like cheating :P Also I'd rather keep on giving everything a try so the ones I wind up not liking don't just stay on the list.

Too long. It was maybe 3 or 4 chapters before I started to get into the story. If you don't already like the writing, I'd probably put it down.

Another 20, nearly 200 now! This batch is pretty heavily skewed to plays due to being at that section of the Harvard Classics.

161. Love in the Time of Zombies by Cassandra Gannon
162. A Blot in the Scutcheon by Robert Browning
163. Awakening by Brandon Sanderson
164. Manfred by Lord Byron
165. Faust, first part by Goethe

166. Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe
I found this really funny, and surprisingly different from the Goethe version which I read directly beforehand. The dynamic between Faustus and Mephistopheles is totally different.

167. Of Tangible Ghosts by L.E. Modesitt
168. Egmont by Goethe
169. The Red Planet: A Natural History of Mars by Simon Morden
170. Hermann and Dorothea by Goethe
171. Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson
172. The Ghost of the Revelator by L.E. Modesitt
173. I Am the Walrus by Neal Shusterman
174. Inferno by Dante Alighieri

175. The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo
A lot of people seem to not like this new release so much, but I loved it! A magical competition where you not only have to win, you have to avoid getting executed by the actual Spanish Inquisition, and also not get brutally murdered by your fellow competitors. Wild ride.

176. Purgatorio by Dante Alighieri
177. Paradiso by Dante Alighieri
178. Life on the Rocks: Building a Future for Coral Reefs by Juli Berwald

179. Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson
I FINALLY got book two of Stormlight in at the library, and it is just fantastic. Everything you want in epic fantasy. Can't wait to keep going whenever Edgedancer shows up.

180. An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson
This author really knows how to write great vampire stories. Funny thing here: I went in completely blind, not even knowing if it was or wasn't a vampire book. I only thought it might be since her debut novel was. So the first few chapter were very much "hmmm, that person is acting kind of weird, is it because THEY'RE A VAMPIRE? Kind of a funny way to read a book.

Goals are all going well.

1. 365 Book Challenge: 180/365
2. Daily Stoic Challenge: I've read it almost daily, so far missed only one day this year (but got caught up).
3. Nonfiction Challenge: 18/50
4. Backlog Challenge: 26/72, with one of the three authors (Cassandra Gannon) being officially finished.
5. Harvard Classics Challenge: 24/72 volumes (59 individual books)

So basically for the rest of this year every week I need to read:

1. The Daily Stoic X 7
2. 1 Nonfiction book
3. 1-2 Backlog books
4. 1-2 Harvard Classics volumes
5. 5-6 books overall, including all of the above.

Works for me!
