2024 Finished:

January
1. My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman (I like Backman books. This one was fine but did not work as well as others have for me)
2. A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham (meh. I had mostly figured out where things were headed early on and kept reading to see if I was correct.)
3. Dune by Frank Herbert (Sci Fi, I really liked the first half, lost me a bit toward the end)
4. Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay (I LOVED this. Historical fantasy set in the Tang dynasty [names, including country/dynasty changed in the book, but that is the one])
5. The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrick Backman (Turned out this is just a short story)
6. Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert (SciFi, I am not loving Dune... if I like the third one even less, I might have to just read the synopsis for the rest!)
7. Spare by Prince Harry (Memoir, if half of this was true, I do feel sorry for him, but man this entire book was an whiney, petty, woe is me tale.)
February
8. All Sinners Bleed by S.A. Crosby (So good! Crime/Thriller about a Black Sheriff in a small southern town... murder, torture, racism, religion... this book touches on a lot of heavy subjects)
9. The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi (Enjoyable read. SciFi, quick, light, fun...)
10. Family Meal by Bryan Washington (Heavy read about love and grief, lust and loss, family and relationships ... I liked it, but it was a challenging read for me due to the format)
11. And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman (also heavy, also about love, loss, grief, family, but also nothing like the above book. Good, short)
12: Children of Dune by Frank Herbert (SciFi, I liked this one! I'm in it to the end of the six book arc now)
13. God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert (SciFi, also good!)
14. Three-inch Teeth by C.J. Box (Mystery, I've been reading Joe Pickett novels since they came out... each year they feel more repetitive and more in need of a good editor, but I still come back)

Currently reading:

Audio: Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert
Print: North Woods by Daniel Mason

January:
1. Four Lost Cities: A secret history of the urban age by Annalee Newitz (audio book)
2. China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan
3. Taking Care: The story of nursing and its power to change the world by Sarah DiGregorio (audio book)
4. Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
5. Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
6. Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport (audio book)
7. Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh
8. The Uncoupling by Meg Wolitzer
9. Artemis by Andy Weir
10. The Armor of Light by Ken Follett
11. A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay
12. The Library Book by Susan Orlean (audio book)
13. The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell
14. Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism by Anne Case and Angus Deaton

February:
15. Unsavory Truth: How food companies skew the science of what we eat by Marion Nestle (audio book)
-a rather academic dig into how nutrition science is funded

16. The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff
-like others have said, this was really well written but the topic might have been better suited to a novella. I fell asleep during the death scene and had to finish it the next day.

17. $2 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America by Kathryn Edin and Luke Schaefer (audio book)
-this was pretty eye-opening. I would be curious to see an update on how these families are faring since the pandemic and recent inflation.

18. Number9dream by David Mitchell
-nice earlier work by this author about a young man searching for his father with a ton of digressions/adventures that might or might not be dreams

19. The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride
-Historical novel centering on the rights of disabled people and the relationships between various racial and ethnic communities and the individuals within them in the 1930s. Will read more from this author.

20. A fisherman of the Inland Sea by Ursula K. Leguin
-short story collection I had not read before

21. Screaming on the Inside: the Unsustainability of American Motherhood by Jessica Grose (audio book)
-I wish any of the information in this was surprising. It validated my pandemic experience though.  The deniers in the demographics thread would probably benefit from reading this.

22.One for the Money by Janet Evanovich
-my mom likes this series and recommended it to me but I absolutely hated it. I know the first book is 30 years old now and I kept vacillating between "this hasn't aged well" and "wow, why did anyone think this was ever ok?" (main character's inner monologue was full of fat phobia and racist dog whistles, and she learns nothing, plus the writing was bad). Will politely tell my mom that it's just not my thing.

23. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
-nice cozy platonic romance about video game developers. I liked the use of video games as a way of doing magical realism without it being too jarring.

24. What We Don't Talk about when We Talk about Fat by Aubrey Gordon (audio book)
-I learned a lot from this one about how heavier people are discriminated against in our society from employment to medical treatment and even legal judgements. A lot of things I just hadn't really thought of before.

25. Small Mercies by Dennis Lehane
- This is about a mother's search for her missing daughter amidst racial tension in 1970's Boston. I really like how the main character's worldview evolves as she deals with new information.

26. Matrix by Lauren Groff
-a sort of re-imagining of the life of medieval nuns.  I appreciate the good writing and nice metaphors but the conflicts seemed too easily resolved and there was no tension.

And that makes the first hundred! Favourites marked. This batch starts withe the remainder of my relevant reads for vacation, and then back to my normal schedule (i.e. new releases, reading challenges, and Goodreads Choice Awards books).

81. The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo
THIS WAS SO GOOD! It is REALLY different from the Disney movie, and it was really interesting seeing what they changed and what they kept.

82. Candide by Voltaire
83. The Flight to France by Jules Verne
84. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne
85. Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

86. Mislaid in Parts Half-Known by Seanan McGuire
Antsy has been one of my favourite characters in the Wayward Children series to date, and I loved seeing a really satisfying conclusion to her story arc. This is such a fun series.

87. Land of Milk and Honey by C. Pam Zhang
88. Exhalation by Ted Chiang
89. The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
90. Poems and Songs by Robert Burns
91. The Seabird's Cry: The Lives and Loves of the Planet's Great Ocean Voyagers by Adam Nicolson

10. Babel or the Necessity of Violence  by R. F. Kuang

11. Toxic Charity by Robert D Lupton
12. The Bling Ring by Nancy Jo Sales
13. The Madwoman Upstairs by Catherine Lowell (ended up being a reread that I hadn't remembered)
14. The Last List of Mabel Beaumont by  Laura Pearson
15. Jane in Love by Rachel GIvney
16. The Other Woman by Sandy Jones
17. Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
18. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

22. God Land by Lyz Lentz
23. Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
24. The Duke Undone by Joanna Lowell
25. Palazzo by Danielle Steel
26. Little Steps Big Faith by Dawn Rundman

Hungers Games Original 3 were rereads but my son wanted to read and talk about them so we had Mom/Son Book club. And I actually really enjoyed Songbirds and Snakes.

Otherwise Remarkably Bright Creatures really is as pleasant and basic as everyone says and it the one book from the month that I would recommend to anyone who wants a cozy read.  God Land was the book that hit me in the feels, but don't know if it would resonate if you aren't a super liberal christian woman living in the MidWest :)

I wanted to like the Jesmyn Ward book more than I did.

January's books:
1 Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology by Eric Brende (2005). Just OK.
2 West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge (2021). Fun, easy read.
3 The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides (2019). I thought the "twist" was obvious, but I liked it fine.
4 How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu (2022). Sci-fi/fantasy short stories mostly written before the pandemic, about a pandemic and climate change. Characters intertwine throughout. Loved it, some of the stories made me tear up.

5     Master Slave Husband Wife by Ilyon Woo (2023). One of NYT's best books of 2023. Interesting story, but written in a way that made it pretty dull. For me, anyway.
6     Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (1937)

I most likely won't make it to 50, but I have already read more this year than last year, at only 2 months in! I credit my kindle paperwhite for the increase.

1. Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir
2. Children of Time - Adrian Tchaikovsky
3. Fool Me Once - Harlan Coben
4. Leviathan Wakes - James S.A. Corey
5. The Woods - Harlan Coben
6. I Will Find You - Harlan Coben

10. How Not to Die - Dr. Michael Gregor - IN PROGRESS

1. Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir - Loved it! Really like his writing style
2. Children of Time - Adrian Tchaikovsky - Liked it! Interesting concept. Dragged a little at times, but other times had me hooked
3. Fool Me Once - Harlan Coben - Liked it! First venture outside of scifi in years. Turns out I like thrillers!
4. Leviathan Wakes - James S.A. Corey - Loved it! So good. Better than the TV show
5. The Woods - Harlan Coben - Liked it!
6. I Will Find You - Harlan Coben - Liked it!
7. Gone for Good - Harlan Coben - Liked it! Went through a Harlan Coben kick. Any recommendations on books/authors like him?
8. Caliban's War - James S.A. Corey - Loved it! May be my new favorite scifi series
9. Children of Ruin - Adrian Tchaikovsky - Liked it! But not as much as Children of Time
10. How Not to Die - Dr. Michael Gregor - Very interesting. Has made me drastically increase fruit/veggie intake and reduce meat
11. The Art of Racing in the Rain - Garth Stein - Loved it! I'm a sucker for dog books
12. Innocent - Harlan Coben - IN PROGRESS
13. Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury - IN PROGRESS

Next heap, lots of Greek tragedies, favourites marked:

101. Agamemnon by Aeschylus
102. The Libation Bearers by Aeschylus
103. The Furies by Aeschylus
104. 1984 by George Orwell
105. Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus
106. Oedipus Rex by Sophocles
107. From the Forest by L.E. Modesitt
108. 84K by Claire North
109. Antigone by Sophocles

110. The Walled City by Ryan Graudin
This was a fun thriller for anyone who's spent time in Hong Kong. Good time.

111. Mountains of Fire: The Menace, Meaning, and Magic of Volcanoes by Clive Oppenheimer
112. Hippolytus by Euripedes

113. The Frogs by Aristophanes
This was just amazing, I think the funniest thing I've read this year. Another author added to the list of "do not read this in public or people will think you're having a stroke".

114. The Bacchae by Euripedes
115. Oranges by John McPhee
116. Don Quixote, Part One by Miguel de Cervantes
117. Reader's Guide to the Harvard Classics by Charles Eliot (probably should have started my Harvard Classics Challenge with this one, but better late than never!)
118. Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu

119. Weyward by Emilia Hart
This one caught my eye last fall by winning two Goodreads Choice Awards, and it was great - a triple-timeline witchy historical fiction.

Joining for the motivation to read more and doom scroll less.  And, for the book recommendations.

1. Storms by Carol Ann Harris - an interesting perspective about Fleetwood Mac from Lindsay Buckinghams live in girlfriend.  A little dishy from an ex.
2. Scarred by Sara Edmonson - damn I'm glad I'm not in some freaky cult!
3. Fatherland by Robert Harris - historical novel - got intrigued by the WWII era by watching the Man in the Hightower series.
4. At Any Cost by Rebecca Rosenberg and Selim Algar - true crime porn, lol.
5. What Only We Know - historical novel - WWII era see #3
6. A Spy Among Friends, Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal by Ben Macintyre - super interesting and very well written about Philby MI6 agent and double agent (KGB) in the cold war
7. Never Never by James Patterson and Candace Fox - a quick thriller with some twists and turns.

I also borrowed her insect book from the library, describing all insect families in Norway. But that is more a book to own and look up once in a while. This forest book is a book to read.

Box (Mystery, I've been reading Joe Pickett novels since they came out... each year they feel more repetitive and more in need of a good editor, but I still come back)
March
15. North Woods by Daniel Mason (Historical Fiction, Not sure I have anything to add to the multitude of accolades for this one, but it is a really enjoyable read.)
16. Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert (SciFi, Fine. Aiming to finish the arc really)
17. Yellowface by R.F. Kuang (Fiction? Satire?, I liked this, I found it engaging, but... I read where a critique said it occasionally lack nuance and I agree. Occasionally that took me out of the story.

Currently reading:

Audio: Razorblade Tears by S.A Crosby
Print: The Storm We Made by Vanessa Chan

How was Demon Copperhead?

I enjoyed it. I found the main character and overall story arc very engaging. However, the pace started to drag during some parts of the story, and I was disappointed in the ending. I listed on audio, and the narrator's performance added to my overall enjoyment.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
