Twenty-five books this time instead of 20, because I've officially hit my 365 goal! Favourites marked.

341. Colors of Chaos by L.E. Modesitt
342. Magi'i of Cyador by L.E. Modesitt
343. Scion of Cyador by L.E. Modesitt
344. Wellspring of Chaos by L.E. Modesitt
345. Ordermaster by L.E. Modesitt
346. Natural Ordermage by L.E. Modesitt
347. Mage-Guard of Hamor by L.E. Modesitt
348. Arms-Commander by L.E. Modesitt
349. Cyador's Heirs by L.E. Modesitt
350. Heritage of Cyador by L.E. Modesitt
351. Recluce Tales by L.E. Modesitt
352. The Mongrel Mage by L.E. Modesitt
353. Outcasts of Order by L.E. Modesitt
354. The Mage-Fire War by L.E. Modesitt

I'm still loving the Recluce series, just a great epic fantasy.

355. From a Far and Lovely Country by Alexander McCall Smith
356. Courage to Dream: Tales of Hope in the Holocaust by Neal Shusterman
357. The Temple of Fortuna by Elodie Harper
358. The Godhead Complex by James Dashner
359. Saevus Corax Captures the Castle by K.J. Parker
360. Vengeance of the Pirate Queen by Tricia Levenseller
361. What Wild Women Do by Karma Brown
362. Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree
363. System Collapse by Martha Wells
364. Defiant by Brandon Sanderson
365. The Endless War by Danielle Jensen

For the rest of this year I'm hoping to finish the Recluce series (one more book), read the Corean series in full (eight books), and catch up on all my new releases (eight more books).

In addition to other challenges, I'm hoping to read the Harvard Classics (five foot shelf + fiction, 71 volumes total) in full in 2024. Does anyone know if there are any online groups dedicated to that? It would be nice to have some accountability as it's quite a large project, about 37,000 pages of what I assume will be fairly dense writing. Doing it with a group or a buddy would make it a lot easier.

80. The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin
-3rd and final book in series. I like how she did the ending.

81. In Great Waters by Kit Whitfield
-fun historical fantasy with mermaids

82. The Singer's Gun by Emily St. John Mandel
-nice older work by this author

83. The Insect Crisis: The fall of the tiny empires that rule the world by Oliver Milman (audio book)
-sorta depressing but the author emphasized the point that insects are one area where individuals with a small garden are able to make a bit of difference. I have gained a new appreciation for dung beetles.

84. Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano
-this is popular for some reason. The concept was nice (drama about an enmeshed family) and the plot was decent but I did not like the writing style (too much explaining, not enough action).

85. Laziness Does Not Exist by Devon Price
-This one touches on a lot of topics I've seen on the forum over the years so may be interesting to a lot of people here. In addition to workplace burnout, Price also discusses other cultural factors that make us tie our self-worth to achievement or other external goals that take a lot of effort. This NPR interview summarizes the book pretty well: https://www.npr.org/2021/09/24/1039676445/laziness-does-not-exist-devon-price

86. The Farm by Joanne Ramos
-scary thriller about the gestational surrogate industry and how immigrant women and care workers in general are treated in the US. This was really well written and I liked the subtle dark humor but the story got more and more fucked up as it went along and the ending made me angry so it was definitely not a relaxing thing to read.

87. The Girl in the Eagle's Talons by Karin Smirnoff
-Continuation of Stieg Larsson's series by a new author. Not great but not terrible either. It is fine as a standalone book if you have not read the others or if it has been a long time.

88. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
-memoir from a young doctor with a fatal cancer diagnosis. There were a lot of good concepts in here especially relating to empathy and prioritization of time.

89. Moonwalking with Einstein: The art and science of remembering everything by Joshua Foer
-Documentary-style book about competitive memorizers. It was nice to read a nonfiction about something fun and quirky for a change.

90. The Sweetness of Water by Nathan Harris
-tragedy set in the post-civil-war US south. Very theme-heavy, a bit slow to start out but I ended up really enjoying it.  Don't get too attached to any of the characters.

91. The Year of Less by Cait Flanders (audio book)
-there is already a thread about this one. It was less about a shopping ban and more about maintaining sobriety through life changes and family/job stress.

I have 4 currently in-progress so might get to my stretch goal of 100 books if I pick up a few more short ones or my turn comes back around for some I ran out of time before finishing.

51. Memory of Old Jack by Wendell Berry

52. The Best American Short Stories of 2021, Ed. By Jesmyn Ward. Highly recommended - there were some really powerful stories.

53. The Three of Us by Ore Agbaje-Williams. I didn't like this one at all and don't understand all the praise it got.

JUST COMPLETED

37.  Playing the Witch Card by K.J. Dell'Antonia
Flair leaves her cheating husband and with her 13 year old daughter, moves back to her grandmother's home town, after inheriting her home and opens a pastry shop. Also happens to come from a magical family, also also happens to be magic herself, but she cast off that part of herself a long time ago. Or so she thought. Halloween is huge in the little town and she and her family get drawn into both it and curses, romance and something potentially sinister. It was cute for the most part, and it read a bit more as a light romance with some family drama and lots of witch stuff than dark and deeply engaging.

DID NOT FINISH

The Tatami Galaxy: A Novel by Tomihiko Morimi
It seemed okay, but just don't have the right headspace to read at the moment.

63. Arcadia by Lauren Groff (I have really liked both books of hers that I've read and am going to put her new one in my TBR pile for 2024)

Favorite Books!

I liked when people listed their favorite books last year - so I'm going to do the same this year. It was not a stellar book year for me honestly, lots of blah.

But my surprise favorite for the year was: Hestia Strikes a Match! By Christine Grillo. It is a light book and it almost felt like a step-child of the Bridget Jones and Jennifer Weiner books of the aughts. It is about a woman finding love in post-second civil war America.

As the world got darker this year, I really appreciated this book's story of finding joy and meaning in life, even in hard times. I find myself thinking about it, months after finishing it.

Runner Ups:
  • Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid (I'm a sucker for sports comeback stories!)
  • Spare by Prince Harry (the ghost writer is EXCELLENT and wrote his own great memoir 20 years ago, The Tender Bar)
  • Arcadia by Lauren Groff
  • Also I could have sworn I read Evening and the Morning by Ken Follett and I just don't see it on my list - so maybe I read it at the end of 2022. But it was also in my brain as one of my favorites for 2023 (so that tells you something :) )

Book that drove me nuts/didn't like:
Designing Your Life by by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans

Otherwise, lots of forgettable stuff this year.

54. All My Knotted Up Life by Beth Moore. I'm not usually into memoirs but I really enjoyed this one - she is such a gifted storyteller.

55. Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler

56. The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes

57. The New Testament. I've read through the whole Bible the last few years but decided to slow it down this year. I'm planning to go back to the whole Bible next year though.

And that's a wrap for 2023! I'm pretty sure that's the most books I've read in a year in my adult life.

92. The Future by Naomi Alderman
-fun fantasy about a plot to trick tech CEOs into thinking there is a disaster so they go hide in their bunkers and the monopolies can be broken up. there is a nod to forum culture and a lot about how social media algorithms mess with everyone's heads. Finished reading it 2 days before the article came out about Zuckerberg's bunker in Hawaii.

93. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
-novel for younger audiences about a young girl who deals with the aftermath of witnessing her friend being shot by police. A very fast read and nice way to tackle this topic.

94. The Nordic Theory of Everything: In search of a better life by Anu Partanen
-Nice account of how the lack of social services in the US actually makes all of us less free. It felt a bit repetitive at times but it may have just been overlap with other books/articles I have read.

95. The Crane Wife by C.J. Hauser (audio book)
-essay collection about relationships, the sort of thing that plays well on audio.

96. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer (audio book)
-Beautifully written series of essays about the relationship between humans and nature and the contrast between what we consider 'modern science' and Native American wisdom, with a focus on plants. I really enjoyed it.

97. How to Be Perfect by Michael Schur (audio book)
-a lighthearted look at Western philosophy. I liked the actors on the audio book.

98. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell (audio book)
-I did not like this as much as other books on the same topic. I think I'm mostly reacting to the writing style/language choices which made him sound like an asshole but also some of the data seemed cherry picked although it was hard to tell with the audio edition. Will probably avoid other books by this author.

99.  A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
-I had never read this before and only seen parts of the film. I enjoyed the made-up language and actually rather liked the book in spite of the main character being a psychopath.

100. The Giver by Lois Lowry
-"Classic" dystopian children's book that I skipped because I was too old for it when it came out.   I can see how it has influenced other books that have been published since.

101. The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
-fun detective novel set in an alternate reality with time travel. Will read more of this series when I am in the mood for something light.

102. What if? Serious scientific answers to absurd hypothetical questions by Randall Munroe (audio book)
-good for listening in the car with kids

103. Gathering Moss: A natural and cultural history of mosses by Robin Wall Kimmerer (audio book)
-listened on a road trip and it made me want to get out of the car to look for moss

Calling it for 2023 at a total of 382 books. Here's the final batch:

366. Like Thunder by Nnedi Okorafor
367. Fairhaven Rising by L.E. Modesitt
368. Chaos Terminal by Mur Lafferty
369. Anything with Nothing by Mercedes Lackey

370. Legacies by L.E. Modesitt
371. Darknesses by L.E. Modesitt
372. Scepters by L.E. Modesitt

I really loved the first story arc of the Corean series. It's your classic farmboy-turned-hero, but more... extreme. Similar feel/atmosphere to the new Final Fantasy game, which I'm also playing now.

373. Alector's Choice by L.E. Modesitt
374. Cadmian's Choice by L.E. Modesitt
375. Soarer's Choice by L.E. Modesitt
376. The Lord-Protector's Daughter by L.E. Modesitt
377. Lady-Protector by L.E. Modesitt

378. Saevus Corax Gets Away with Murder by K.J. Parker

The first two in this series were kind of goofy and silly, so having the third one be an emotional kick in the gut was really out of left field. Loved it, and was really surprised.

379. Paladin's Faith by T. Kingfisher
380. Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh
381. Valdemar by Mercedes Lackey
382. The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff

I'll be back in the new year with my 2024 365 Book Challenge!

Was just looking at Letterboxd and saw I only logged 40 movies in 2023, so I fully read more books than I watched movies. I think my takeaway is I need to be watching movies a little more often.

Just logged back into Kanopy for the first time in a while, and they've got a pretty damn good catalogue on there.

I just managed 50 books in 2023, so I reached the goal of this thread.

Before Christmas I borrowed a pile of books from the library, because I expected to read a whole lot. But I ended up playing a computer game, Fallout Shelter. This game is quite time consuming.

But a few days ago I finally started to read a book from the book pile. I am currently halfway in the book, and it will be my first book in the new year, in the new thread. I extended the loan on my pile of books and hope I will manage to read some more of them before I need to return them.
