And that makes 300! Will I reach 400 before year end? Maybe?

Ain't no maybe about it, @Zikoris!  You'll reach 400 by the end of November is my guess.  Well, unless you fall and hit your head hard enough that you don't remember how much you like to read.

I think it might be close! I set my Goodreads goal at 365 and they say I'm 40 ahead of schedule, which would land me pretty much right dead-on by year end, but I do have an overseas trip coming up and tend to read less when travelling, so who knows.

67.  The Lola Quartet, by Emily St. John Mandel (Aug 26) (audio).  A good early work by this author.  @Splashncash - I found it at my library!

68.  When No One is Watching, by Alyssa Cole (Aug 29) (audio).  Pretty good thriller.

Still plowing through Middlemarch - man that florid Victorian language is abstruse!

@sui generis - I am jealous!  I just returned from a month+ trip to the mainland and visited countless book stores (new and used) looking for The Lola Quartet.  No luck.  Ah well, the search is half the fun.

Glad to see you are still reading Middlemarch.  It's on the TBR list.

74.  Tell Me an Ending, by Jo Harkin (Sep 27) (audio). Just fine.

71.  Circling the Sun, by Paula McLain (Sep 13) (audio).

and

72.  West with the Night, by Beryl Markham (Sep 19) (audio).

Paired because they are both about Beryl Markham's life.

Ha, on my TBR as well.  Do you have a preference for one over the other?  And, did you like them on audio?  I am trying to decide between reading or listening.

They were both read by solid narrators.  The former is much more about her personal life and horses and the latter is much more about flying, so perhaps they complement each other well.  Sometimes I felt like Markham's writing was a little more polished or lyrical, and I really enjoyed certain passages or turns of phrase.  Some have accused her of having it ghost-written, I think!

Thanks!  Narrators can really make or break the experience so this is helpful.

41. And then I Woke Up by Malcolm Devlin
Really trippy take on the zombie trope. What if the infected were actually the ones SEEING the zombies? A hallucinatory infection that caused people to suddenly see perfectly normal people as rotting undead monsters... and then attack them? I really liked this and it was a fast read.

42. The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas (1st in the elemental trilogy series)
Good book and looking forward to the reading the sequels. It's tagged as a young adult series, with elemental magic and crossover into the real world from the magic world and a gifted orphan and then kids in school and yes, that sounds vaguely like Harry Potter, but honestly way better and bonus - the main protagonist is a girl.

Female protagonist, temp hench for hire that primarily deals with spreadsheets, injured during a basic "stand there and be our diversity/female hire" and takes on the superheroes with a vengeance. If you like the show The Boys, this is going to really resonate. Looking forward to reading more from this author but really do hope they bring this world/characters back too.

And I'm down another 20. Favourites marked:

301. The House with the Golden Door by Elodie Harper
The sequel to an earlier favourite, The Wolf Den, this one is also excellent and follows the continuing story of a slave prostitute in ancient Pompeii clawing her way to freedom. Fantastic read.

302. The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie
303. Sparkling Cyanide by Agatha Christie
304. Cold Reign by Faith Hunter
305. Dark Queen by Faith Hunter
306. Homicide and Halo-Halo by Mia Manansala
307. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
308. Demonic Foes: My Twenty-Five Years as a Psychiatrist Investigating Possessions, Diabolic Attacks, and the Paranormal by Richard Gallagher
309. Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson
310. The House of Unexpected Sisters by Alexander McCall Smith
311. The Miracle at Speedy Motors by Alexander McCall Smith
312. He's Just Not That Into You by Greg Behrendt

313. The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber
The fifth book in the Caraval world, these are just so magical and such a good time.

314. Facets of Revolution by T.A. White
The fourth book in the Firebird Chronicles, and holy hell do I love this series. It's science fiction that's heavily focused on alien cultures and politics versus space battles, and the main character's sassy drone is the best.

315. The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson
316. The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
317. Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach

318. Kingdom of the Feared by Kerri Maniscalco
A nice wrap-up to the Kingdom of the Wicked trilogy, this food-focused dark Italian series is really everything I look for in the fantasy-romance genre. Good stuff.

319. Holes by Louis Sacher
320. Geekomancy by Michael Underwood

I put together a sweet reading list for my upcoming trip to Korea, can't wait to dive in:

These are the Korean ones:
- The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh
- Prophecy by Ellen Oh
- Once Upon a K-Prom by Kat Cho
- XOXO by Axie Oh
- Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Nam-Joo Cho
- Beasts of a Little Land by Juhea Kim
- K-Pop Confidential by Stephan Lee
- Pachinko by Min-Jin Lee
- Last of the Talons by Sophie Kim

I also have two non-Korean new releases coming out during the trip that I intend to read ASAP:
- Seasparrow by Kristin Cashore
- Widow of Wildwood by Ann Aguirre (my spooky Halloween pick)

And lastly, my goal is to read one book I buy/borrow/find locally, preferably something very unusual/unique.

Nonfiction:

I'm at 52 but nine of them are audio books.  Maybe next year I should sort by audio/not audio instead of fiction/nonfiction since I'm finding this method of classification strange when it comes to things like biographies and political or opinion pieces. My current library puts biographies in their own little area, but where I used to live they put them with nonfiction.

75.  The Last White Man, by Mohsin Hamid (Oct 2) (audio). Did not enjoy, but it may have been significantly due to the narration (by the author) as well as the structure (felt like the book was one long run-on sentence).

76.  The Committed, by Viet Thanh Nguyen (Oct 8).  Solid, but didn't enjoy as much as its predecessor, The Sympathizer.

51 The Seven Sisters, Storm (part 2), by Lucinda Riley.

I got almost the whole Seven Sisters series (in Dutch) from my mother who had read them herself. But part one was not in the bag. I just read somewhere that you can read the books independently. But I now ordered part 1 from the library and will read that next. In Norwegian this time, but never mind.

The book number 2 started like a standard romance novel: Attractive protagonists moving fast towards falling in love, playing hard-to-get for a while and then get a relationship with each other, which is the best ever. But the later half of the book became more like a normal novel and became interesting. So I will continue with the series.

Hi @Log -- I'm only 1/3 of the way through but really enjoying how it highlights how many decisions people make that are based on what others are doing (& saying that they want) rather than truly personal reflections. Thoughtful reflections on hierarchy and imitation which give a lot to think about (and with interesting real-life examples). It's a bit deeper in some aspects than other popular books on similar themes..which I appreciate.

Heaps of information about Rene Girard and how he initially spotted that most characters in classic literature *learned* what to want by imitating people around and why that type of character resonates with many people (but also how humans are generally embarrassed to admit this imitiation game).  I'm going to dig into it more once I am done my bookclub books but it is a good one IMO.

75. The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz
76. The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager

77. More than a Woman by Caitlin Moran
78. Unveiling by Suzanne Wolfe (worst book I've read in years!)
79. Dark Earth by Rebecca Stott
80. Comfort Me With Apples by Catheryn Valenti (I'm spelling her name wrong I think)
81. Year of Ravens by Kate Quinn, Stephanie Dray, and others
82. Women Talking by Miriam Toews
83. Day After Night by Anita Diamant

Other than the Wolfe it was another solid batch.

Comfort Me With Apples was a rec from a friend who works at the library - she said "It is short and subversive and surprised me!" and she was correct. It did not go where I expected it to go, which is always a pleasant surprise.

Women Talking was heartbreaking and heavy but also beautiful and thought provoking.

I love The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and have never read any of her other books because they aren't the Red Tent. So I finally read one, and it was excellent and now I have checked out another from the library.

So many questions!  Are you enjoying Korea and are you there for fun or work?  Is the location-based reading working?  How was Crying in H-Mart?  Just picked it up from a Little Free Library.  Is A Deadly Affair set in Korea?  Or is that in your Korea reads as a red herring?  [Ha, see what I did there?]

325. The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

So glad you enjoyed this.  I just finished the third in the series.  I keep hearing my mom as Joyce which makes Joyce's character all the funnier.

DUDS/Did Not Finish

Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer
Shakespeare for squirrels: a novel by Christopher Moore
The Best of Me by David Sedaris
Devil house by John Darnielle

COMPLETED

44. The perilous sea / Sherry Thomas (second book in the Elementals Trilogy)
Still giving me a Harry Potter vibe, but that's kind of insulting to this storyline. It really is hard to not compare them tho, and I do think this is superior. Really enjoying it in any case.

45. The hollow of fear / Sherry Thomas (same author I think?) but this is the Lady Sherlock series (3rd)
I think I mentioned I am a HUGE Sherlock Holmes fan? I have read all of the original stories by Sir Arthur, but also have read many, many many offshoots/homages (Solar Pons anyone?) and this is a very interesting take on it. Sort of an alternate reality and it works for me, with the character of Holmes actually a highly intelligent and unconventional young woman that plays the role of the great detective (or at least, works behind the scenes) and in this latest version, in disguise as a Holmes brother, helps to solve the murder of the estranged wife of the man that she counts as her dearest friend and object of her (if they can be called that) affections, before he himself is hauled off to jail for the deed. The romance part is okay but not the main draw for me; I have no issues with there being hanky and or panky, as the story itself was rather fun but it's obvious the romance stuff is going to figure into the later books in the series.

Hey, I'm not Zikoris, but I really enjoyed Crying in H-Mart myself. She's a really talented storyteller and it was both funny and breaks your heart and I loved the way she talks about her visits back to Korea.  It did make me REALLY hungry also. The author relates to their mom/Korean heritage with food and often talks about some amazing sounding dishes. ;)

Are you reading the Agatha Christie and Ian Fleming novels in order?

I'm just on a vacation, loving it here - so much excellent food. For that batch of books I had just started my trip, so I'd only read 2 Korean books then, though I've read a few more since. Still in Korea now. I'm not reading Agatha or Ian in order, I just throw a random AGatha in here and there when I'm low on other things to read, and for Casino Royale I needed to read a book with a secret agent for a reading challenge.
