recently finished/reading
** been having some sort of spiritual moment lately...

29) Dream Yoga: Illuminating Your Life Through Lucid Dreaming and the Tibetan Yogas of Sleep by Andrew Holecek--my sleep life became very strange while reading this..perhaps too much awareness of it :)

30) The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer--read this over a decade ago. Doesn't resonate at much now as it did at that point, likely because I had a mediation practice and maybe have integrated the lessons. I think it was a pivotal book for me at that point, showed me how unhelpful my inner monologue often was.

4. These Tangled Vines by Julianne MacLean
5. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Franklin Covey.
6. Red Clocks by Leni Zumas
7. The Ickabog by JK Rowling
8. The Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee
9. My Heart is Chainshaw by Stephan Graham Jones
10. Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward
11. Kindred by Octavia Butler
12. Framed by James Ponti
13 -14. Bridgerton Books 7 and 8 by Julia Quinn
15-16. Rokesby Books 1 and 2 by Julia Quinn
17. The Evening and The Morning by Ken Follett
18. Beethoven's Hair by Russel Martin
19. The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan
20. No Words by Meg Cabot
21. The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett
22. Abandoned in Death by JD Robb
23. Stolen Focus by Johann Hari  (non fiction)
24. The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley
25. Corruptible by Brian Klass (non fiction)
26. Wonder by RJ Palacio
27. Witchmark by CL Polk
28. The Girl with the Make Believe Husband by Julia Quinn
29. Rest Your Child's Brain by Vicky Dunleavey (non-fiction and reread)
30. The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn
31. A Darker Shade of Magic by (I can't remember)

32. The Paris Apartment by Lucey Foley . . . So I was very indifferent to The Hunting Party (2.5 stars) and almost didn't bother to read this one. Glad I did, I think it is the best of the three Foley Books I've read.  Still has that "people stuck in a building together" shtick, but a few nice twists in this one that didn't feel as typical. 3.5 stars!

33. The Chiffon Trenches by Andre Leon-Talley. . . I found this autobiography to be incredibly moving, occasionally LOL pithy, and at times annoying in the way he fills space by name dropping/listing fabulous things and people. I honestly have never read anything else like it in both good and bad ways.

34. In Defense of Witches by Mona Challet . . . This was very French. It was fine and there were interesting ideas regarding women and ageing and men and how they react to women who don't stay in "their place". But I think I preferred Lindy West's comical take on the same subject from a few years ago (The Witches are Coming!).

1. The Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle, cannot recall the translator
2. The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth 1), NK Jemisin
3. The Obelisk Gate (The Broken Earth 2)
4. Radical Acceptance, Tara Brach
5. The Stone Sky (The Broken Earth 3) - these were great!
6. Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu trans. Ursula K Le Guin
7. The History of Philosophy, AC Grayling
8. The Doors of Perception & Heaven and Hell, Aldous Huxley
9. The Hobbit, Tolkien
10. The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt
11. Human Transit, Jarret Walker
12. Strong Towns, Chuck Marohn
13. Capital in the Twenty-First Century, Thomas Piketty
14. For the Love of Men, Liz Plank
15. Go Tell It on the Mountain, James Baldwin
16. The Second Mountain, David Brooks
17. Suburban Nation, Andres Duany/Elizabeth Plater-Syberk/Jeff Speck
And here's April!

18. The Four Agreements, Miguel Ruiz
19. How to Change Your Mind, Michael Pollan
20. The Tragedy of Heterosexuality, Jane Ward
21. The Sirens of Titan, Kurt Vonnegut
22. Orfeo, Richard Powers

How to Change Your Mind probably gets my most ringing endorsement of the month. I liked Orfeo quite a bit, but I imagine it would be distinctly less enjoyable for someone without background knowledge of classical music.

Husband and I are both trained classical musicians and we also really liked Orfeo and specifically how Powers writes about music :) Like he gets it!

And it was recommended to us separately by a composer and opera director.

I'm probably going to gift my copy to a conductor friend of mine when I next see her! I loved The Overstory and appreciate its appeal to broad audiences, but to read a book that incredible and then realize a significant portion of the author's oeuvre is about classical music is just a gift that keeps on giving.

Yes! The Time of Our Singing is beautiful!

Next 20, favourites marked:

131. Gunpowder Alchemy by Jeannie Lin
132. Clockwork Samurai by Jeannie Lin

133. Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin
134. Blood for Blood by Ryan Graudin
I loved this alternate history dystopia where the Nazis won, and the rebels launch a plot to assassinate Hitler involving an epic 20,000 km Mad Max-style motorcycle race from Germany to Japan. Really action-packed and just a great read.

135. Unwind by Neal Shusterman
136. UnWholly by Neal Shusterman
I LOVED the first two books I've read so far in the Unwind series. Another dystopia, this one in a world where parents can choose to retroactively abort (unwind) their teenagers for any reason they choose, and they're essentially sold for parts. The main characters are all Unwind kids on the run from the authorities, and it is just one interesting read.

137. His Only Wife by Peace Medie

138. The Defiant Heir by Melissa Caruso
139. The Unbound Empire by Melissa Caruso
More books in a really great political fantasy series. Just solid, solid fantasy with amazing characters and plots.

140. Diversity and Exclusion: Confronting the Campus Free Speech Crisis by Lindsay Shepherd
141. How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You by Matthew Inman
142. Vampire Charming by Cassandra Gannon
143. Johannes Cabal the Detective by Jonathan Howard
144. Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
145. The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
146. If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha
147. In Order To Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom by Yeonmi Park
148. Buried Memories by Simon Green
149. The Jade Setter of Janloon by Fonda Lee
150. Venomous by Christie Wilcox

35.  The Overstory, by Richard Powers (May 3) (audio). This really did not do it for me.  Notwithstanding that it is well-received by critics and casual readers alike (plus many of my close friends), and that I agree with its message.  Oof.

36.  Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier (May 3).  Enjoyed this book a lot, especially with the afterword in the 2002 edition.  I love a good British manor gothic mystery and this one did not disappoint!

Quoting myself so I can refer back to the previous book list...

COMPLETED

24. Newt's Emerald by Garth Nix
Very light romancy type of novel with a bit of magical interference and very low on the romance part. Was a stand alone with no sequel, but decent for what it was.

25. A Map of Days (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children #4)
I know this is lauded as a YA series but it is really quite good. I wasn't sure what direction they'd head after the pretty decent wrap of the initial trilogy arc, but I am definitely entertained.

DUDS

None so far! Nice. :)

TO READ

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (REREAD FOR BOOK CLUB)

The Conference of the Birds (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children #5)
The Desolations of Devil's Acre (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children #6)
by Ransom Riggs

What my bones know : a memoir of healing from complex trauma by Stephanie Foo

Crying in H Mart : a memoir by Michelle Zauner

The maid : a novel by Nita Prose

1. A Children's Bible by Lydia Millet.
2. Read My Pins by Madeleine Albright.
3. 7 and 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton.
4. These Tangled Vines by Julianne MacLean
5. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Franklin Covey.
6. Red Clocks by Leni Zumas
7. The Ickabog by JK Rowling
8. The Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee
9. My Heart is Chainshaw by Stephan Graham Jones
10. Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward
11. Kindred by Octavia Butler
12. Framed by James Ponti
13 -14. Bridgerton Books 7 and 8 by Julia Quinn
15-16. Rokesby Books 1 and 2 by Julia Quinn
17. The Evening and The Morning by Ken Follett
18. Beethoven's Hair by Russel Martin
19. The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan
20. No Words by Meg Cabot
21. The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett
22. Abandoned in Death by JD Robb
23. Stolen Focus by Johann Hari  (non fiction)
24. The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley
25. Corruptible by Brian Klass (non fiction)
26. Wonder by RJ Palacio
27. Witchmark by CL Polk
28. The Girl with the Make Believe Husband by Julia Quinn
29. Rest Your Child's Brain by Vicky Dunleavey (non-fiction and reread)
30. The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn
31. A Darker Shade of Magic by (I can't remember)
32. The Paris Apartment by Lucey Foley
33. The Chiffon Trenches by Andre Leon-Talley
34. In Defense of Witches by Mona Challet

35. Parent Nation by Dana Suskind . . .Nothing new in here, but I also really enjoyed it. She did a great job talking about the lack of parental/family support at all socioeconomic levels in the US in a way that most people usually miss.

36. Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman . . . I loved that it centered on an older generation, but I wish I had liked it more.

37. Healthy as F*CK by Oonagh Duncan . . .I was annoyed while reading this (I tend to hate read "Girl Boss" stuff), but also, I have reached for veggies more often since I read it . . . so /shrug?

38. The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley . . . was recommended to me as "Outlander without all the assault". Which was basically spot on. The writing isn't as immersive as Outlander, but not bad, 3 stars?

39. Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Meijia  . . . Read this with my son. Great things to recommend it: a very imperfect heroine with a temper and a love of science, interesting folk references (La Llorona and Chupacabra), and taking care of family/chosen family, but not as good as some of the other "Rick Riordan Presents" books. Which, of course, my son didn't notice because Chupacabra puppy!

39.  The Thursday Murder Club, by Richard Osman (May 11) (audio). Fine cozy murder mystery.  I probably won't follow up with the sequels.

31. Murder After Christmas by Rupert Latimer. Madcap mystery (audiobook)

32. The Infinite Blacktop (Claire DeWitt Mysteries #3) by Sara Gran. Noir mystery.  I was really surprised by this book. I didn't know it was the 3rd in a series and haven't read the first 2 yet. I thought The Infinite Blacktop was one of (the?) most creative and fascinating genre books I've ever read. If you like hardboiled noir, Claire is as hardboiled as they come. I don't even like her. But the writing is clever without being superficial, introspective without navel gazing, and full of bizarre takes. I can imagine people having very strong opinions about whether they like it or hate it but I thought it was brilliant and fabulously written and I look forward to going back to the first two Claire DeWitt books.

39.  The Thursday Murder Club, by Richard Osman (May 11) (audio). Fine cozy murder mystery.  I probably won't follow up with the sequels.

OMG, for some reason cozy murder mysteries are my bread and butter these days.  I can't get enough of them.  Loved both Thursday Murder Club books.

Have you heard of the British Library Crime Collection? They've researched murder mysteries from the 30s-40s and made them available again. I've listened to a few and they've been cozy, funny mysteries if you enjoy things from that era.

1. Improvement by Joan Silber.
It was ok, the title doesn't make much sense in my opinion
2. Die kleine Bücherei in der Church Lane by Rachael Lucas (The Telephone Box Library)
Nice to read. I liked that the protagonist saved enough money to change her life
3. Aufräumen für Faule by Rachel Hoffman (Unf*** your Habitat)
I wouldn't buy it but it helped a bit psychologally with all the chaos
4. It started with a secret by Jill Mansell
That was ok. Exactly the right kind of book to read before sleeping

5. Das kleine Hotel auf Island (‎The Northern Lights Lodge) by Julie Caplin

168. Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge by Erica Dunbar
169. One for the Money by Janey Evanovich

170. Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
A really good library/book-focused fantasy stand-alone where a librarian uniform includes weaponry, and sentient grimoires sometimes need to be battled into submission. Reminded me more than a little of Lirael by Garth Nix, which I loved.

DUDS/Did Not Finish

Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer
Shakespeare for squirrels: a novel by Christopher Moore
The Best of Me by David Sedaris
Devil house by John Darnielle

COMPLETED

26. The maid: a novel by Nita Prose
Sort of a mystery, but not really. It's told first person by a young woman that works as a maid in a small boutique hotel. Molly Dunn is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and interprets people literally. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has had to navigate life's complexities all by herself. No matter she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection. But Molly's orderly life is turned on its head the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself very dead in his bed.

I liked it, but it was upsetting to see how she was taken advantage of due to her lack of understanding how people can (sometimes) be assholes, and she ran into many of them in her hope for human connection. It was a quick read, well written and the people I cared about did end up being okay in the end.

27. Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (REREAD FOR BOOK CLUB)

I love this book, and I think I've lost track of the number of rereads. It's a fun, crazy roller coaster and the team up of Pratchett and Gaiman just ~chef's kiss~ perfection. A heart-warming apocalypse story, with a bromance between the demon and angel. The book is hilarious, with amazing dialogue. And I know there's a new tv show based on it, but I kind of don't want to see it because I don't think it will ever match my idea of how this should look in my head.

DUDS

None so far! Nice. :)

Finished
12.  American Made:  What Happens to People When Work Disappears by Farah Stockman
Living on the East Coast but having grown up in the Midwest and having worked in a factory setting, this was interesting.
It's always good to learn about different people and their viewpoints.
13.  Don't Know Much About Geography by Kenneth C. Davis
Started out interesting, but I started to lose interest after a while.  Maybe the fact that I read the 1st edition (1992) has
       something to do with it?
14.  Mayo Clinic Guide to Better Vision by Sophie J. Bakri MD
I love books like this.  It starts out with the structure of the eye, then goes into different things that can go wrong and
what we know about how to prevent them from occurring.  Finally ends with coping strategies for if and when it's too late.

Currently Reading
1.  The Story of China by Michael Wood
2.  The Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan
