195. Scythe - Neal Shusterman
196. Thunderhead - Neal Shusterman
197. The Toll - Neal Shusterman
Oh my god. This is the best dystopia I've ever read. My boyfriend got sucked in too and now we talk about some aspect of this world literally several times a day, and sometimes in the middle of the night - the religion, characters, plots, society, AI, ethics choices, etc. A really amazing series, and I can't wait to read more of his stuff.

Just wanted to say, I'm half way through Thunderhead, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the series. Dystopian novels have become so cliche, but this one has a really interesting spin on things, especially with the AI aspect and its choices. Wanted to say thanks for the recommendation!
Ditto all of this, including being halfway through (or almost halfway through, anyway) Thunderhead.

Station Eleven, by Emily St. Jogn Mandel.

One of my coworkers told me that he had just started listening to this audiobook last year, without knowing anything about it, when everything shut down for the pandemic. He said he was walking through a totally empty grocery store at 11pm, stocking up on food, and listening to the opening of this book on his earbuds when he had a sort of horrible out of body/existential crisis/Munch scream moment.

It still gives me chills when I think about it.

And I thought it was an excellent book.

22. The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans. I read this based on recommendations in this thread and loved it.

23. The More of Less by Joshua Becker. This book disappointed me a little because it was very focused on the "why" of minimalism rather than the "how". But I realized after I read it that he has another book on the "how" (The Minimalist Home) so I'm reading that one now.

I'm a couple books behind with the year half over and 23 books completed, but this is significantly more than I normally do - this thread has been really motivating for me.

40. My Berlin Kitchen by Luisa Weiss
41. The More of Less by Joshua Becker
42. The Dog Stars by Peter Heller
43. The Lost Continent by Bill Bryson
44. The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
45. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
46. The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth

47. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer
48. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
49. Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave

Ugh.  I only have a couple of chapters left in my latest read.  If I realized finishing that one yesterday would mean I completed 50 books at the 6-month mark, I would have done it.

No, I'm not competitive.  :-)

Edited to fix the formatting.

22. The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans. I read this based on recommendations in this thread and loved it.

Yay!  Everyone I've talked to about this book has also loved it (which I feel like is really unusual for books I love to also be somewhat universally loved).  I've been trying not to rave too much and get friends' expectations up too high, but it really does seem to be quite special.

Quote from: Zhiantara
1. The House of Islam: a global history, Ed Husain. Really good overview of the history, basic tenets, strengths and problems of Islam, written by a devout believer.
2. Quiet: the power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking, Susan Cain. I read this whenever I need reminding that introversion is not a personal failing. Soooo good.
3. No Friend but the Mountains, Behrouz Boochani. The experiences of an asylum seeker detained on Manus Island. Hard to put down because it is excellent, hard to pick up again because it is not a feel-good read.
4. The explosive child, Dr. Ross Greene. Why standard behaviour management techniques don't work for kids with challenging behaviours and how to partner with them to change things and make life better for everyone.
5. Welcoming food: Diet as medicine for home cooks and other healers. Book 1: Energetics of food and healing. Andrew Sterman. The Chinese medicine approach to food but through a western lens.
6. Welcoming food: Diet as medicine for home cooks and other healers. Book 2: Recipes and kitchen practice. Andrew Sterman. Tried a few ideas and seems to be helping with my reflux.
7. Star Trek: The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway, Una McCormack. A novel written as an autobiography, mostly just rehashing ST Voyager.

8. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll
9. Through the Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll

...because after weeks of Not Reading the next book in my To Be Read pile I gave up and grabbed something I love off the shelf.

33. A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy, by William B. Irvine (June 20).
34. My Year Abroad, by Chang-rae Lee (June 24) (audio).
35. At the Water's Edge, by Sara Gruen (June 24).
36. Freedom from the Market: America’s Fight to Liberate Itself from the Grip of the Invisible Hand, by Mike Konczal (June 29).
37. The Buried Giant, by Kazuo Ishiguro (June 30) (audio).

38. Pilgrim's Wilderness: A True Story of Faith and Madness on the Alaska Frontier, by Tom Kizzia (July 14) (audio). Very disturbing, but atmospheric and fascinating to listen to as we drove through the landscapes described in the book, including one of the most remote towns in the nation's largest national park.

39. A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles (July 14). Really enjoyed this novel set in Moscow between 1920-ish and 1953-ish.  Fun, character-driven story that gets exciting toward the end.  Easy to love and not just a junk food read either!

40. Gomorrah, by Roberto Saviano (July 15) (audio).  About organized crime in and around Naples, that is, apparently, much worse than the Cosa Nostra &tc. in Sicily.  Most of it was many grisly descriptions of murders, interspersed with occasional interesting topics like how the Camorra is involved in the toxic waste business or has infiltrated Aberdeen, Scotland.  Not a very cohesive narrative.

How was it compared to the other ones? I'm really excited about it, but I haven't been able to get it from the library yet.

1. On Writing by Stephen King
2. Red at the Bone by Jaqueline Woodson (I will need to reread the end of this one again. I was getting sleepy as I finished and I think I need to soak in more of the beautiful writing.)
3. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
4. House of Trelawney by Hannah Rothschild
5. Race and Reunion by David W. Blight (a book about how the US handled Reconstruction and how that narrative still effects things today. A bit dense but very glad I read it)
7. Differently Wired: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World by Deborah Reber
8. The City We Became by M.K. Jemison
9. Can't Even: How Millenials Became the Burnout Generation by Anne Hellen Petersen (Good but depressing?)
10. First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen
11. From Burnout to Breakthrough by Eileen McDargh
12. You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey by Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar (delightful! Amber Ruffin is one of my favorite comedians and her ability to approach a serious topic with humor was a balm I did not know I needed until I read it).
13. The Guest List by Lucy Foley
14. A Gentlemen in Moscow by Amor Towles
15. Behind the Attic Wall by Sylvia Cassedy
16. The Witches of New York by Ami McKay  . . .
17. How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind by Dana K White
18. Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler
19. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
20. UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World by Michelle Borba
21. Ballet in the Cold War: a Soviet - American Exchange by Anne Searcy
22. Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore
23. Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Graeber24. A Rogue of One's Own by Evie Dunmore
25. Shadows in Death by J.D. Robb
26. Faithless in Death by J.D. Robb
27. The Rose Code by Kate Quinn
28. Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff
29. Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner
30. The Social Graces by Renee Rosen.
31. Jane Eyre
32. Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR
33. A House to Die For by Vicki Dudera
34. The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons
35. The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans.
36. The Ravenscar Dynasty by Barbara Taylor Bradford
37. The House on Fripp Island (can't remember the author)
38. Love Your Life by Sophie Kinsella.
39. The Devlin Diary by Christi Phillips.

Gave Up On:
Speciman Days by Walt Whitman
Wide Sargasso Sea

40. Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn.  I really enjoyed this. It wasn't a perfect book, but it was an interesting book and sort of fun but also intense. Found the very end to be a bit rushed and sort of out of left field.
41. Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson. This has been on my to-read list since high school. It is often mentioned with Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters which is one of my favorite books of poetry. Short stories about turn of the last century Ohio held together by  a recurring journalist character. Glad I read it but didn't set my world on fire. Always nice to pick up and put down collections of short stories though.
42. The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. A beachy re-read for me. Grabbed it while I was waiting on library holds to come through. Heavy for a beach read, but really well realized characters.
43. Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fannie Flag. Little Free Library pick up. Probably would have felt fresh when it first came out but hasn't aged well.
44. Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino. Really Enjoyed It! Author is a tad younger than me so the first chapter about reality TV didn't land for me demographically, but I'm still thinking about some of the essays a week later.
45. The View Was Exhausting by by Mikaella Clements and Onjuli Datta. Excellent beach, Romcom read. A movie waiting to happen. Protagonist annoyed me a little - but mostly because I recognized her negative traits in myself :)

Nest 20, favourites marked:

261. Thorn - Insitar Khanani
A really nice Goose Girl retelling. I've been really enjoying retellings lately.

262. Signal to Noise - Silva Moreno-Garcia
263. The Sauvignon Secret - Ellen Crosby
264. Sever - Lauren DeStefano
265. The Vineyard Victims - Ellen Crosby
266. Harvest of Secrets - Ellen Crosby
267. The Return of the Sorceress - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
268. The Scorpion Rules - Erin Bow
269. The Angel's Share - Ellen Crosby
270. The French Paradox - Ellen Crosby

271. The Forbidden Wish - Jessica Khoury
A fantastic, fresh Aladdin retelling, told from the perspective of the (female) genie. Another rare one that my boyfriend was really into as well, since we normally have fairly different tastes.

272. Prime Meridian - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
273. Deadly Ever After - Eva Gates
274. Perfect Ruin - Lauren DeStefano

275. Beyond - Mercedes Lackey
Ahhhhh the nostalgia - brings me right back to my teenage years of devouring all the old Valdemar books. It's essentially a heist/escape story, but of absolutely epic proportions, with sooo much subterfuge and court games.

276. The Glass Spare - Lauren DeStefano
277. Certain Dark Things - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
278. Booked for Trouble - Eva Gates
279. Reading up a Storm - Eva Gates

280. Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe - Heather Webber
An absolutely charming and heartwarming story about a woman returning to her small hometown to take over her grandmother's magical bakery. I really loved this one.

10. The Tennant of Wildfell Hall, Anne Bronte. Really good portrayal of what we would now call coercive control/domestic abuse, with a happy ending. Really enjoyed it.

I figured since I've asked multiple questions on this thread I'd put my books out there for 2021 so far. My favorites so far have probably been the Expanse series and Scythe series - least favorite by far - Ready Player Two. 41. Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts, by Annie Duke (July 24). Well-written and engaging (even though, like I feel all of these kind of books do, it kind of over-explains a lot of things).  A lot of it was stuff that I've been practicing all my life and it concentrated less on what I was hoping for (how to assign probabilities with any sort of rigor), so not as useful for me as I'd hoped. I think it's a little mis-named about the "bets" part, which is too specific.  It should just be "Thinking like a Poker Player".

41. Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts, by Annie Duke (July 24).

42. The Plot, by Jean Hanff Korelitz (July 24). I'm really torn.  Blazed through it in 24 hours which means I was totally engrossed and did enjoy it!  But it always bothers me when the characters do things normal humans just wouldn't do, but are necessary to create a mountain for the plot out of what should have been a molehill.  Or maybe I overestimate other humans.  The book is very meta - the author's characters (many of them writers) talking about how anyone can be a writer and a plot so good even bad writing would make it a best seller.  This definitely was not bad writing, but that sort of is how I feel about the book.

Hey Sui!

Aww, thanks so much!  I definitely get great ideas from this thread and love hearing what other people thought of books I read or books they had strong feelings about, which I immediately put on my own to-read list.  I really should join another book club or 2 so I could discuss all these with more people.

43. Why I Am Not a Buddhist, by Evan Thompson (July 29). I felt like I walked into some other family's argument reading this.  Just a lot of references and ideas that I was not prepared to consider.  I don't think this is a beginner's (or even advanced beginner's?) book.

44. The Midnight Library, by Matt Haig (July 30) (audio). Quite predictable in it's overall plot, although listening to the ins and outs of each "life" the protagonist lived was entertaining.

Ha, just started this last night, for book club.  I see what you mean about the different lives.  Once I got that far, I didn't want to put it down.  I wanted to see how the next "life" morphed.

1. The Farthest Shore, Ursula K. LeGuin (own, pre-2021)
2. Christmas Days, Jeanette Winterson (own, pre-2021, re-read)
3. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (own, pre-2021, re-read)
4. The Cauldron Cill Brighid Devotional Anthology, the Cauldron Cill (own)
5. The Fellowship of the Ring, J.R.R. Tolkien (own, pre-2021, re-read)
6. The Biology and Ecology of Giant Kelp Forests, David Schiel and Michael Foster (library)
7. Egil's Saga, trans. Palsson (own, pre-2021)
8. Piranesi, Susanna Clarke (library)
9. From Yao to Mao: 5000 Years of Chinese History, Kenneth Hammond (borrowed)
10. The Haunting of Tram Car 015, P. Djeli Clark (library)

11. Halfway Through the Wood, Seanan McGuire (new, own). Fun novella in her Incryptid series -- probably not interesting if you haven't ready any of the series, but very fun if you have.

12. The History of the Druids in Britain, Ronald Hutton (new, own). Long book, very in-depth, very niche; I enjoyed it because I like this niche.

13. Electric Light, Seamus Heaney (old, own). Heaney's a great poet and always worth reading.

14. Pagan Portals: Manannan mac Lir, Morgan Daimler (new, own). Very nice intro here, although again not interesting if this isn't your niche. ;)

15. Watchmaker of Filigree Street, Natasha Pulley (old, own). This was a fun novel -- fun speculative twist, historical setting with a steampunky vibe, some good characters. Katsu the mechanical octopus was amazing.

Goals:

15/52 books read overall
7/15 books I already owned pre-2021
1/6 natural history books

Oof behind. I basically was not reading much for a month or two there...

27. Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. Really good but kind of depressing.

28. God Has a Name by John Mark Comer. Fantastic book - would highly recommend it to anyone who's a Christian or interested in Christianity.

Woot, 300! Next 20, favourites marked:

281. Stillhouse Lake - Rachel Caine
282. Killman Creek - Rachel Caine
283. Wolfhunter River - Rachel Caine
284. Bitter Falls - Rachel Caine
A really good thriller series about the ex-wife of a serial killer trying to move on with her life, and the angry mobs chasing after her who think she helped murder their sisters and daughters.

285. Blood of a Gladiator - Ashley Gardner
286. A Gladiator's Tale - Ashley Gardner
287. Garden of Thorns - Amber Mitchell
288. The Cursed Sea - Lauren DeStefano

289. South of the Buttonwood Tree - Heather Webber
A really charming small-town magical realism story centered around a woman who finds an abandoned baby in the woods and decides to keep it. Also has a realtor who can talk to houses, which is a pretty cool ability.

290. Big Summer - Jennifer Weiner
291. Murder with Macaroni and Cheese - A.L. Herbert

292. Kindred - Octavia Butler
Ahhh this is one of the best books I've ever read. It follows a modern-day black woman who is tied to her 1800s slave-owning ancestor, and gets warped to his time to save him whenever he's in life-threatening trouble. An absolutely brutal, heart-wrenching story.

293. Throne of Grace - Cecily Wolfe
294. Honeymoon for One by Beth Orsoff
295. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith
296. Timeless Whisper by Sandra Sinclair

297. Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross
An incredibly good Sleeping Beauty retelling, set in a modern city where fairytale curses are commonplace.

298. The Secret Life on Bees - Sue Monk Kidd
299. An Unkindness of Ghosts - Rivers Solomon
300. Tear You Apart - Sarah Cross

@Zikoris Just wanted to say that when this thread comes up on my list with a new post, I always check and see if you posted to see if I need to add books to my to-be-read list. You've given me quite a backlog :-). Thanks for the posts and commentary on your favorites!

That's great! I feel like I've had really good luck this year with finding great books to read. Branching out from my epic-fantasy-only pattern into other genres has really helped with that a lot.

@Zikoris , I second that!  Your enjoyment of Agatha Christie's books encouraged me to pick some up again. (I've been very slowly working my way though them.). I just read two of her books of short stories and really enjoyed them!

13.    The Rosie Project, Graeme Simsion
14.    Learn Painting Flowers Quickly
15.    Cold Skies, Thomas King
16.    The Sentinel, Lee Child and Andrew Child

I loved the Rosie Project and laughed my head off reading it.  To my delight it is the first of a trilogy.
