Zucked is a great title! Does the book live up to the cover?

I loved the Sabriel series by Nix - I wish he wrote more relatively grown up works...

Completed so far:

1. Surface Detail, by Iain M. Banks (predictable, but entertaining)
2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey  (of nightmares)
3. Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, by Robin Sloan (the author has such a crush on google)
4. the handmaid's tale, Atwood (oof)
5. The Doomsday Machine, Ellsberg ([insert litany of swearwords, here])
6. A Wrinkle in Time, L'Engle (much-needed wholesomeness)
7. People of the Lie, Peck

In Progress:

The Illuminatus! Trilogy, by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson
Naked Lunch, by William S. Burroughs
An Introduction to Statistical Learning, (review)
Conversations with Ogotemmêli, by Marcel Griaule
Strategies and Games: Theory and Practice, by Prajit K. Dutta
Measurement, by Paul Lockhart
Learn You a Haskell for Great Good! by Miran Lipovača
The Road to Serfdom, by F. A. Hayek

On Shelf:

Thinking Physics, by Epstein
On Numbers and Games, by Conway
Modern Principles of Economics, by Cowen
...more to come

Updates:

8. The Road Less Traveled, Peck (reminds me of Fromm's 'Art of Loving,' but with more religious overtones)
9. A History of the World in 100 Objects, MacGregor (my sense of the scope of history has been broadened delightfully)
10. The Left Hand of Darkness, Le Guin (I loved it)

It seems I'm reading everything but the books on my to-read list.

...I loved anything by Garth Nix as a kid. The Abhorsen series, and the Ragwitch, especially. Those and the Bartimaeus trilogy (Stroud) were my favorites, growing up.

I know that game.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

It seems I'm reading everything but the books on my to-read list.

I've started alternating what I request from the library: One from my TBR list, one for the popsugar challenge, and one sequel to something else I've read.  I have to finish all three before requesting another set.  Anything new I want to read has to go on the TBR list and wait for the next round.

I've been thrown off track a bit by a bunch of decorating books my spouse took out, that he wanted both of us to read so we can talk about them before painting/decorating our new house.  I'll be back to the regularly scheduled TBR list soon.

This keeps happening to me! I have an ongoing list (about 20 books right now) and then someone will suggest a book and I'm like...sweet, I'll go to the library today! And list keeps getting longer and forgotten...

Hello all

I am in again. I had a late start this year but I’m getting at a pace of 2 books per week so I’m hoping to get to 50 by the end of the year:
- 40 fiction books, probably all French, the English section of my library doesn’t have anything new to offer and I don't like buying fiction books at 10€ a piece as I never reread them.
- 10 nonfiction books, mostly parenting, personal development or relationship books (I should read Gottman books and the five love languages).
ENG
  • My Child's Different: The Lessons Learned from One Family's Struggle ...by Elaine Halligan
  • The 7 habits  of highly effective people by Stephen Covey … reread
FR*
  • Quand l'ouragan s'apaise (The flame and the flower) par Kathleen E. Woodiwiss
  • La vie devant soi (The life before us) par Émile Ajar (Romain Gary)
  • Traîtrises (Beloved Rogue) par Penelope Williamson

20. Anything is possible by Elizabeth Strout. It would be the sequel to My Name is Lucy Barton, but more looking into to the lives of the other family members and townsfolk mentioned in first book. I kept forgetting who they all were.

1. Laini Taylor - Strange the Dreamer
2. JK Rowling - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay
3. Drew Hayes - Siege Tactics
4. Charlie Holmberg - Smoke & Summons
5. Barry Eisler - The Killer Collective
6. Sarah Andersen - Adulthood Is A Myth
7. Lydia Kang - A Beautiful Poison
8. Laini Taylor - Muse of Nightmares
9. Lydia Kang & Nate Pedersen - Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything
10. Michelle Obama - Becoming
11. Deborah Harkness - A Discovery of Witches
12. Lisa Goldstein - The Red Magician
13. Shea Ernshaw - The Wicked Deep
14. Rafi Zabor - The Bear Comes Home
15. Victoria Lee - The Fever King

16. Ransom Riggs - Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
17. Ransom Riggs - Hollow City
18. Ransom Riggs - Library of Souls
19. Ransom Riggs - A Map of Days

I like this series quite a bit, although I struggled a little with the fourth installment being such a dramatic change from the first three. It grew on me, though.

These books are one of those series that makes me wonder what the heck we're calling 'young adult' fiction. It's got brutal killings (including people, formerly-human monsters, and animals), kidnapping, Nazi-esque experimentation on humans (including children), blackmail, etc. I actually had a nightmare related to what I was reading. But it's appropriate for kids since there's no sex, right? :-P

1. Infernal Devices - Philip Reeve - 1/3/18
2. Sapiens - Yuval Noah Harari - 1/12/18 - UGH. Great subject, TERRIBLE execution. 200 pages of content in 430 pages of endless fucking lists and artificial dichotomies. Will never be reading another book from this author. He needs an editor to take the wind out of his (verbose, tedious, pedantic, excessive) sails
3. How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind - Dana White - 1/21/19
4. A Darkling Plain - Philip Reeve - 1/22/19
5. Woman on Fire - Amy Jo Goddard - 2/11/19 - fucking AWFUL. I don't think I'm the target audience. I found it incredibly condescending and reductionist and self-righteous. It was for book club. Hate that I even had to finish it!
6. Better Than Before - Gretchen Rubin - 2/19/19 - great. I highly recommend it.
7. The Female Persuasion - Meg Wolitzer - 3/1/19- actually a pretty solid read! Kept me engaged. Not my usual by any means (it was for book club), but not an annoyance read either.
8. The Thief - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/10/19 - these are fun kids reads. Well written and engaging.
9. The Queen of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/15/19
10. The King of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/19/20
11. Dies in Fire - S M Stirling - 3/21/19 - Book club book. This was really good! It's a local author, and I hate to say it, but I wasn't expecting much. Good read though. World war z writing vibe, but more compelling characters.
12. A Conspiracy of Kings - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/24/19
13. Thick as Thieves Megan Whalen Turner - 3/28/19
14. Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey - AJ Jacobs - 4/6/19 - not one of my favorite books by him. Hit it's stride a *little* more later on? But really, could have easily been an article and been better for it. Not much of his usual reliable great humor either. Eh.
15. The Year of Living Danishly - Helen Russell - 4/4/19 - pretty good, although the surprise infertility/miracle pregnancy store line crushed my sad little infertile heart. Definitely made me laugh out loud a time or two, and was an interesting look into denmark. A bit dry in places though.

16. Flight Behavior - Barabara Kingsolver - 4/15/19 - took me a little bit to get into this, but it was really good. Sad at times for sure. Empowering. Politically topical. Not sure why I owned it for so long without reading it! I love her books.
17. The Prophet - Kahlil Gibran - in progress

I read the first of that series and had a very similar set of thoughts re: what we call children's/YA literature, Slicey!

Have you read Gibran before, Bracken_Joy? The Prophet is one of my all-time faves.

Zucked is a great title! Does the book live up to the cover?

Yes!  Totally worth a read.  He does a great job describing the dark side of Facebook and other social apps.  They are addicting (by design). They create tribes who behave unkindly to "outsiders". They've replaced face to face relationships with virtual ones. They manipulate us socially and chemically via dopamine for their own profit. We've lost control of our data and it can be used to influence us in unexpected ways without our consent or approval.  It's a liberal slant and a bit alarmist but he makes some great points.

This book gave me a vocabulary for what's been bothering me about Facebook (& other social apps) for years.  I appreciated his suggestions on how to make social media work better for society as a whole.  He also did an interview with Kara Swisher on Recode/Decode which covers some of the topics in the book in an hour podcast.

I'm reading Hooked now, which goes into more detail on how these apps are designed to be addictive by the Harvard professor who teachers people how to make engaging and habit forming apps.  It's fascinating.

21. The Now Habit: A strategic program for overcoming procrastination and enjoying guilt free play by Dr Neil Fiore (audiobook) - it was good but I'll have to get hold of a written copy to go over the techniques again.
22. The Wife by Alafair Burke. Bit of a thriller. Husband is accused of sexual abuse but will his wife stand by him. I enjoyed it but I did have trouble suspending my disbelief for this one.

I read the first of that series and had a very similar set of thoughts re: what we call children's/YA literature, Slicey!

Have you read Gibran before, Bracken_Joy? The Prophet is one of my all-time faves.

Very much so. We had part of "speak to us of Love" read at our wedding =) I just like to revisit now and again. Usually I'll just go in for a single piece I'm feeling that day, but sometimes I like to do a whole read through. "on Joy and Sorrow" is one of my favorite poems of all time, ever.

23. A Month of Sundays by Liz Byrski. Four ladies in their sixties and seventies find out who they are on a book club retreat. Not bad.

I've got two I won't add to the list:

The Bat by Jo Nesbo DNF So bad, cheesy, cliches!!! Should I bother reading any others?

Deep Work - Summarized for Busy People. So summarised it was pointless but it was all my library had. I may try to read the actual book at some point but from the summary it sounds a bit obvious - get off social media and get some work done.

Completed so far:

1. Surface Detail, by Iain M. Banks (predictable, but entertaining)
2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey  (of nightmares)
3. Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, by Robin Sloan (the author has such a crush on google)
4. the handmaid's tale, Atwood (oof)
5. The Doomsday Machine, Ellsberg ([insert litany of swearwords, here])
6. A Wrinkle in Time, L'Engle (much-needed wholesomeness)
7. People of the Lie, Peck

In Progress:

The Illuminatus! Trilogy, by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson
Naked Lunch, by William S. Burroughs
An Introduction to Statistical Learning, (review)
Conversations with Ogotemmêli, by Marcel Griaule
Strategies and Games: Theory and Practice, by Prajit K. Dutta

The Road to Serfdom, by F. A. Hayek

On Shelf:

Thinking Physics, by Epstein

14. Plot Against America, Roth (alternate history fiction set in the 1940s)

24. Quitting Plastic: Easy Ways to Cut Down the Plastic in Your Life by Clara Williams Rodan and Louise Williams. I knew most of the tips but got a few more plus a bit of a push. It's focused on Australia and the Australian lifestyle so I don't think it would be all that relatable outside of Oceania.

Also read though The Art of Getting Started which is a procastination-busting self-help workbook for artists. Looks quite helpful, I might use it in the future.

May I just say how I am so happy to be done with the Philippa Gregory books? One or two were fine, but gosh they all sound the same after awhile. I only persisted because I wanted to finish them all and didn't want to have to sort out who everyone was again later. Next up I'll be reading all the Rick Riordan books so I can converse with my 9 year old...

Also, I've updated how much I have saved by reading ebooks from the library on my kindle since receiving it for Christmas in 2015: $1565.43. I love it!!
