I didn't do quite as well as lentil, but I did read seven books last month. This month will be less than that.

1. The Big Oyster by Mark Kurlansky
2. Riding the Iron Rooster by Paul Theroux
3. Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
4. Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
5. The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold
6. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
7. The Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold
8. Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
9. Rocannon's World by Ursula LeGuin
10. Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance
11. Hungry Monkey by Matthew Amster-Burton
12. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin. Accidentally found an audio play version of this so I need to go back and do the real book eventually.
13. A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller
14. Dungeon Born by Dakota Krout
15. A Time of Gifts by Patrick Leigh Fermor *
16. The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis *
17. Walkable City by Jeff Speck

A good month. More than last month, less than a lentil...

It's so fun to do a monthly recap! I have had my nose to the grind stone at work and have started up classes again, so I will be starting to slow down for the semester... (I think. LOL)

Of these, 8 were partially read previously that I completed. I am still not fully following through on completing all of the projects started, but am making great progress on this. With so many learning opportunities out there, it's hard to stay focused to really move the needle as opposed to making a little progress in a lot of things.

5 books were technology related and some called out in the Odin Project--so headway on this front as well. Yippee!!!

24   Wisdom of Walt
25   Emotional Design - Norman
26   Javascript and jQuery - Duckett
27   When to Jump - Lewis
28   Measure What Matters - Doerr
29   The LifeTime Learner's Guide to Reading - Hoover
30   Rook's Guide to C++ - Hansen
31   Principles - Dalio   ***Very dense book and a fascinating look into his life/business philosophy.
32   Joy on Demand - Tan
33   Minimalist Home - Becker
34   Creative Quest - QuestLove
35   The Secret Letters of the Monk who Sold Ferrari - Sharma
36   Learn to Code HTML and CSS - Howe
37   Dive into HTML5 - Priest
38   Barking to the Choir - Boyle
39   Ghost in the Wires - Mitnick   ****Starting to learn networking, so it was interesting from a historical perspective

Urgh, it's March and I've fallen behind.  I've had many thousands of pages of non-book reading for my volunteer gig over the past month. More to come, but it should be more manageable now and  I'm hopeful that I'll be back in the mood for more personal reading.

I just read How Not To Die. Eye-opening stuff regardless of your eating habits. He has a podcast that breaks the entire book into digestible sections by topic.

Finished reading HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban with my wife. Starting on the Woman in the Window with her.

1. Infernal Devices - Philip Reeve - 1/3/18
2. Sapiens - Yuval Noah Harari - 1/12/18 - UGH. Great subject, TERRIBLE execution. 200 pages of content in 430 pages of endless fucking lists and artificial dichotomies. Will never be reading another book from this author. He needs an editor to take the wind out of his (verbose, tedious, pedantic, excessive) sails
3. How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind - Dana White - 1/21/19
4. A Darkling Plain - Philip Reeve - 1/22/19
5. Woman on Fire - Amy Jo Goddard - 2/11/19 - fucking AWFUL. I don't think I'm the target audience. I found it incredibly condescending and reductionist and self-righteous. It was for book club. Hate that I even had to finish it!
6. Better Than Before - Gretchen Rubin - 2/19/19 - great. I highly recommend it.

7. The Female Persuasion - Meg Wolitzer - 3/1/19- actually a pretty solid read! Kept me engaged. Not my usual by any means (it was for book club), but not an annoyance read either.
8. The Thief - Megan Whalen Turner - in progress

I loved the Joe Abercrombie First Law series! What did you think of Best Served Cold?

This was my first Joe Abercrombie, and I thought it was good, but not great. I was disappointed that for a fantasy novel, it seemed to lack fantastical elements, other than beong in a world of his creation. It is my understanding though that the First Law books may have more of that, and I do intend to read those as well at some point!

Definitely try the first law trilogy. It's the same world as Best Served Cold but the characters and narrative are both much more compelling IMO

1. Laini Taylor - Strange the Dreamer
2. JK Rowling - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay
3. Drew Hayes - Siege Tactics
4. Charlie Holmberg - Smoke & Summons
5. Barry Eisler - The Killer Collective
6. Sarah Andersen - Adulthood Is A Myth
7. Lydia Kang - A Beautiful Poison
8. Laini Taylor - Muse of Nightmares
9. Lydia Kang & Nate Pedersen - Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything
10. Michelle Obama - Becoming
11. Deborah Harkness - A Discovery of Witches

12. Lisa Goldstein - The Red Magician

I think this was categorized under "young adult," since it was pretty short and did a good job of making a Holocaust story not completely horrific to read. (Which is good 'cause I'm a little fragile these days.) I liked the first half a lot more the the second half but overall a decent read.

1. A Very Large Expanse at Sea by Tahereh Mafi. (YA fiction about an American teenage girl post 9/11 - who happens to be Muslim.)
2. City of My Dreams (Mina drömmars stad) by Per Anders Fogelström. (Swedish classic. Absolutely brilliant. Why have I not read this before? Luckily it is the first part of a series.)
3. Children of Their City (Barn av sin stad) by Per Anders Fogelström. (Second book in the series. Life in the 19th century was not easy for workers in Sweden. Hence the emigration to the US. Not uplifting but a really good read.)
4. Swede Hollow by Ola Larsmo. (About the Swedish immigrants to the US in the 19th century. Too long but interesting).
5. We have to stop meeting like this (Vi måste sluta mötas på det här sättet) by Johanna Lindbäck and Lisa Bjärbo. (Feel good lit. Sometimes just what February requires.)
6. An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. (This might be the best novel of the year. Yes, it is that good.)
7. A Patchwork Planet by Anne Tyler. (A solid read.)
8. We are okay by Nina LaCour. (YA fiction about loss.)

8. The Thief - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/10/19
9. The Queen of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/15/19
10. The King of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - in progress

6. Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy.

A short self help book on how to prioritise and get things done. It's a re-read but I needed a refresher..

I am very behind.

7. Her pretty face by Robyn Harding - easy read, not great, unbelievable characters.
8. A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena - this was my first audiobook and I don't know if that affected my enjoyment! Wasn't that taken with it but I did get a little bit gripped. It's a sort of thriller but the narrator's voice was a bit off-putting, sounded like she was reading a kids' book. It's by the author of The Couple Next Door which my friend had recommended but that was taken at the library so I went with this one.

If I do another audiobook I think I'll make it a non-fiction.

9. Falling by Jane Green - It started out being a warm romance story which is what I needed and then it had an emotional twist which I didn't need. It's not a bad book though.

10. The CHAOS Cure by Marla Cilley (The Fly Lady). I did pick up a few tips so it was worth reading but I'd say 50% wasn't relevant as I am already fairly decluttered / don't need cookie recipes / tips on how to build a fire. I think there was a bit of padding to make it into book length. I now know I *can* clean up my kitchen in 10 minutes and I know what to do to make the house presentable enough for unexpected guests within 15 minutes (clear the surfaces into a tub and hide in bedroom, wipe sink, clean toilet, stack dishwasher).

I was recommended a good housekeeping book on another thread but it is not in my library.
