1. Squeezed - Why Our Families Can't Afford America by Alissa Quart
2. The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein
3. Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Angela Davis -  The concepts were thought-provoking (and Davis, who narrated the audiobook, was engaging), but this is primarily a collection of speeches all of which were mostly the same - lots of repetition and discussions of topics were generally very brief - I would have preferred deeper analysis of the issues.

Currently Reading: The Great Divergence by Timothy Noah

I'm gonna use this as an incentive to finish all the half read books on my Kindle or read the ones I downloaded last year without ever opening. Like compound interest, hopefully I'll go from zero to two, to ten books quickly!

I'm reading Catch-22 right now. The writing is really sharp, verrry cynical, and I'm enjoying it. My wife and I are reading Profit First to help our businesses too. It's a quick and relatively profound book.

1. A Very Large Expanse at Sea by Tahereh Mafi. (YA fiction about an American teenage girl post 9/11 - who happens to be Muslim.)
2. City of My Dreams (Mina drömmars stad) by Per Anders Fogelström. (Swedish classic. Absolutely brilliant. Why have I not read this before? Luckily it is the first part of a series.)
3. Children of Their City (Barn av sin stad) by Per Anders Fogelström. (Second book in the series. Life in the 19th century was not easy for workers in Sweden - hence the emigration to the US. Not uplifting but a really good read.)

How did you like it? I really enjoyed this last year. I found parts of it pretty repetitive, but then again, those parts helped cement his argument for me.

I really liked that one when I read it last year, too. Much better than The Obstacle Is The Way, which I read right after it and found both repetitive and patronizing.

I agree with @grantmeaname --I enjoyed it!
It is repetitive but not obnoxiously so.
I though it was very straightforward and I immediately noticed benefits from putting some of his suggestions in place.  I un-installed IG on my phone but chose not to close my account--this way I can access it weekly vs. multiple times a day. I started logging hours of unscheduled but intentional time to spend in my studio without distraction or even podcasts. It seems simple but isn't intuitive in this day and age.. It made me excited to pursue focused creative work.

I like this idea. I've never kept track of my books but after reading this thread I realize how useful Goodreads.com is.  I just made myself an account to get more suggestions and keep track.

So far I read:

1. Educated - Tara Westover
2. 419 - Will Ferguson
3. David and Goliath - Malcolm Gladwell
4. Medicine Walk - Richard Wagamese

1. Laini Taylor - Strange the Dreamer
2. JK Rowling - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay
3. Drew Hayes - Siege Tactics
4. Charlie Holmberg - Smoke & Summons
5. Barry Eisler - The Killer Collective
6. Sarah Andersen - Adulthood Is A Myth

I have a free month of Amazon Prime, so I'm going through some pretty-darn-random Prime Reading books... Sarah Andersen is a cartoonist so that isn't much of a "book", but whatever. The Barry Eisler book was... mixed. I almost stopped reading it after the first few chapters because of all the eye-rolling I was doing, but it got better after he stopped trying to show off how cool and interesting he thinks his characters are in the introductory chapters and actually got to the plot. Although I'm still baffled at how (spoiler just in case anyone wants to read the book)
Spoiler: show
"the main female character is secretly a serial killer" was completely irrelevant to the plot and never really turned into anything. WTF? That's just like... a background detail?

3. The Spirit Level: Why Greater Equality Makes Society Stronger by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett

This fits with someone's social justice reading list, although it's quite old now (2010) so you may have read it.

I found this a bit of a slog at some points, I don't know if there was a bit of repetition or if I am just terrible at concentrating. Probably the latter. In any case, I am glad I read this as there were more than a couple of bits new info for me. It seems very relevant during the Trump era and following the release of the latest IPCC climate report. It also tied in, believe it or not, with the brain science book I just read which was great (discussion of kids born into poor situations and how it affects them).

The stand out message is that in countries with greater equality *ALL* socio-economic groups do better. Even the rich have better health, longevity with a more equal society.

The authors believe that people of all political hues want a fair go for everyone, they just differ in how they want to achieve it. In the current political landscape I feel bit pessimistic about that belief. There are some resources for how you can take on the cause after reading the book but I haven't looked at them yet. The book also referenced some other books which I've put on my list and made me want to re-read Growth Fetish so that's next.

@Fresh Bread --sounds super interesting. My library has an audiobook version which I might check out.

1) 21 Questions for the 21st Century (Yuval Noah Harari)
2) Braving the Wilderness (Brene Brown)
3) Treating People Well: The Extraordinary Power of Civility At Work and In Life (Lea Berman & Jeremy Bernard) *former White House Social Secretaries
4) Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World (Cal Newport) *enjoyable in a practical way
5) The Course of Love (Alain de Botton) --fiction interspersed with philosophical musings about unrealistic expectations in romance
6) Cringeworthy: A Theory of Awkwardness (Melissa Dahl)

still working on...

7) Do Not Say We Have Nothing (Madeline Thien)  : won both the Giller Prize and Governor General's award--I have been slooowly making my way through this book. Intelligently written. Beautiful but gutting.
Begins with a Vancouver family who bring in a Chinese refugee fleeing the crackdowns post Tiananmen square. The story however is set mostly in China and moves between characters (mostly musicians) and timeframes (Mao's reign 40's onwards into the 90's). About a 1/3 to go..

7. Lydia Kang - A Beautiful Poison

Another Amazon Prime freebie, but I really liked this one! A well-written murder mystery with plenty of tragedy (set during WWI/the Spanish flu epidemic, in addition to the murders) but it was kept light enough not to be too depressing. Kind of. I mean, a lot of really terrible things happened. I might just be getting inured to this sort of thing in fiction :-/

1. Infernal Devices - Philip Reeve - 1/3/18
2. Sapiens - Yuval Noah Harari - 1/12/18 - UGH. Great subject, TERRIBLE execution. 200 pages of content in 430 pages of endless fucking lists and artificial dichotomies. Will never be reading another book from this author. He needs an editor to take the wind out of his (verbose, tedious, pedantic, excessive) sails.

3. How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind - Dana White - 1/21/19
4. A Darkling Plain - Philip Reeve - 1/22/19
5. Better Than Before - Gretchen Rubin - in progress

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, J.K. Rowling and Stephen Fry (borrowed)
2. Wisp of a Thing, Alex Bledsoe (library)
3. The 2018 Best American Essays, ed. Hilton Als (mine)
4. The Language Instinct, Stephen Pinker (mine)
5. Dreamsnake, Vonda McIntyre (library). Late 1970s science fantasy, and very much of its decade. There's casual polyamory and queerness in a way that I really appreciate, and there's some really interesting stuff in the worldbuilding, but overall the book just didn't grab me -- it felt a bit flat and shallow, and I never really felt invested in the plot or the characters.

I am now at 2/15 for pre-2019 books.

Currently reading:

Americanah, Chimimanda Adichie (mine)
Kindred: The Graphic Novel, Octavia Butler, Damian Duffy, and John Jennings (borrowed)
The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins (mine)

This book "21 Lessons (Questions?) for the 21st Century" seems quite popular. I read the synopsis of it and it seems like it covers a very wide spectrum of topics in a finite number of pages and I would be very impressed if it could muster much substance, but that might explain it's popularity. Would people recommend this book?

1. Squeezed - Why Our Families Can't Afford America by Alissa Quart
2. The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein
3. Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Angela Davis
4. The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride - I've read some of his fiction before and admire his writing style.  This book explores his family history - particularly that of his white, Jewish mother who married a black man in a time and place where such relationships were not accepted.  This was excellent - explored a lot of difficult topics through a very personal lens.  I listened to the audiobook version and the way it was narrated by two readers portraying the author and his mother really, really worked.

Currently Reading: The Great Divergence by Timothy Noah - hopefully going to finish this up on my flight tonight.

5. The Great Divergence by Timothy Noah - Excellent discussion of the factors driving the growing income inequality in the U.S.  It's a complex problem with no simple solutions.  A bit dense in places (or maybe I'm just not as educated in economics as I should be), but worth the struggle.
6. We Should All Be Feminists - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - More an essay than a book at only 52 (short) pages - but a great read that manages to cover a lot of ground quickly.  "My own definition is a feminist is a man or a woman who says, yes, there’s a problem with gender as it is today and we must fix it, we must do better. All of us, women and men, must do better."

Ooo I might look this up and see how the factors compare to The Spirit Level. Does Noah's book offer policy solutions or just discuss the what's and why's?

(Slightly belatedly) I'm in! I've identified as a heavy reader my entire life, and yet for the last *mumble* years, I've spent most of the time I would've spent reading randomly footling around on the internet (she says, on the internet). Hopefully getting off the web and into the books will help me with focus, too.

I thought it was interesting--more like 21 questions to stimulate thought and then some exploration of the topics around them. Definitely not enough room in the book to provide answers but I don't think that was his intention. I would read it again as I was in a rush since I had to give it back to the library, and it was a bit heady to be rushing. Bio-tech & Artificial Intelligence are big topics.

My wife and I have started reading aloud together. The things you do when you drastically cut back on alcohol... :)

Jokes aside, it's a lovely way to chill out with your main squeeze instead of TV. And a sneaky way to rack up 15 more books or so for the more competitive among you. ;)

If anyone's interested, we started with Hemingway's A Moveable Feast and are now on the Harry Potter series (missed that whole 'thing' as a kid).

Happy reading pals!

Hey @allsummerlong would you recommend The Art of Frugal Hedonism?

I'm not sure if that's a 'best of' list of just the books you read. It sounds intriguing!

@SmileAllDay Just a list of what I've read in order this year :)

Yes, I would absolutely recommend. I think the MMM crowd would enjoy it - It has a light tone, and is mostly about enjoying the innate pleasures in life, most of which are free or very cheap. First heard about it on this podcast (Slow Your Home) - https://slowyourhome.com/151/ which gives a taste of what the book is like. I really enjoyed it!

I'd also recommend, the authors are also loosely tied to the permaculture movement from what I understand, which ties in nicely with Mustachianism. I also really enjoyed their sense of humour because I found it similar to my own.

5. The Great Divergence by Timothy Noah - Excellent discussion of the factors driving the growing income inequality in the U.S.  It's a complex problem with no simple solutions.  A bit dense in places (or maybe I'm just not as educated in economics as I should be), but worth the struggle.

Ooo I might look this up and see how the factors compare to The Spirit Level. Does Noah's book offer policy solutions or just discuss the what's and why's?

It's focused on the what's and why's, but does have some nuggets about potential solutions.
