Just finished my first book of the year, too...

1. Laini Taylor - Strange the Dreamer

I have the next book on hold at the library, but after the ending of this one I'm not that excited to read #2... so stressful :-S

How was this? --- it's been lingering on my To Be Read list for a while.  I've tried to start it twice and failed to get into it --- and yet I haven't quite given up on it entirely.  Is that stressful as in you wish you hadn't started?  Or "good" stressful? :-D

Smarter, Faster, Better: the Transformative Power of Real Productivity
The Places in Between
Fear: Trump in the White House

And I'm currently on:

The Prince of the Marshes: and Other Occupational Hazards of a Year in Iraq

Loved last year's thread and looking forward to this year's thread.  I read a ton (goodreads tells me that I read 211 books last year), so I've been using this challenge to dive deeper into one subject - last year I attempted (and failed) to read 50 books about Russia.

This year I'm challenging myself to read 50 books about social justice.  I'm defining social justice quite loosely - my challenge, my rules.  If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

1. Squeezed - Why Our Families Can't Afford America by Alissa Quart

Currently Reading - The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein

I'm in. It's a lofty goal, no time to hang around!

I saw Goodreads mentioned, and I recommend it. You can have a list of what you want to read next so there's delay in between. Checking books off after finishing them is quite satisfying too :)

Also, Calibre is a free app for keeping your Kindle in order, while converting PDFs into .mobi files.

Will you all be focusing on financial books or mixing it up bt fiction and non-fiction?

From previous years, I'd say financial books are pretty rare actually. But feel free! People do like to set various challenges for themselves- like the previous posts' social justice books, or the 'categories' that @Serendip shared.

Whereas I fall into the camp of mainly reading before bed, to prevent insomnia, so most of my books are YA fiction. So, you'll see all types!

This year I think I will focus a little more on Financial books and non-fiction in general. I have been much more drawn to true story/memoir type books. I'll still read the occasional fiction for fun though.

2019
1. The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder - Currently listening
2. Childbirth without Fear by Grantly Dick-Read - Currently reading

It's a good read, just... one of those books where such bad things happen to the best characters. I get a little annoyed with that, it feels like "tragedy porn" - titillating the readers by finding creative ways to hurt the main characters in worse and worse ways. The first part was a pretty cool fantasy novel, which turned towards romance, and then tragedy. I would have preferred to stick with fantasy! But if you like the tragic romance stuff, it's great...

This year I'm challenging myself to read 50 books about social justice.  I'm defining social justice quite loosely - my challenge, my rules.  If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

1. Squeezed - Why Our Families Can't Afford America by Alissa Quart
2. The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein

Currently Reading:
Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Angela Davis
The Great Divergence by Timothy Noah

I read Nancy Isenberg's White Trash last year and it was very illuminating. Mary Beard's Women and Power isn't necessarily SJ, but it's also pretty illuminating reading.

I've also been hearing good things about Evicted, The Color of Law, and The Half Has Never Been Told.

Dream Hoarders by Richard Reeves might fall under a loose definition of social justice.
Worth borrowing from the library, not worth owning.

+1 Evicted. It was really good. Lots of interesting facts, but because the author primarily tells the stories of the people he follows and does so in a 1st person narrative, it reads as smooth as fiction. One of my favorite non-fictions. Although the problems the book sheds light on are really horrifying.

I'm so thankful I took part in this.  It really challenged me to read 50 books this year.  I'm going to do finish it (only 5 books away and I have two books going right now), but I removed my list for personal reasons.  This is a challenge I will continue to do each year.  Thanks for starting it!

You guys are awesome.  I read White Trash, Evicted, $2 a Day, Dream Hoarders, and Nomadland in the last year or so --- they were all thought-provoking reads that made me want to dive deeper into understanding inequality (of all kinds) in society.

Just Mercy is on my reading list.  I'll definitely look into the other books you have all suggested ---- thanks for the recommendations!

1. A Very Large Expanse at Sea by Tahereh Mafi. (YA fiction about an American teenage girl post 9/11 - who happens to be Muslim.)
2. City of My Dreams (Mina drömmars stad) by Per Anders Fogelström. (Swedish classic. Absolutely brilliant. Why have I not read this before? Luckily it is the first part of a series.)

The holidays have rolled into a few sick days on the couch.  Making the most of it.

1) Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual by Jocko Willink - Recommend starting every year with this book.
2) The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields - Literature at it's finest
3) Iron Gold by Pierce Brown, 4th in the Red Rising Series recommended to me by my teenagers.  Excellent.
4) The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  Loved it and my teenager is now reading it too.
5) Light on Snow by Anita Shreve
6) Witch of Willow Hall by Hester Fox

Reading: On Becoming a Leader by Warren Bennis

1. World Enough & Time: On Creativity and Slowing Down - Christian McEwen (1/3/2019) - More artistic than I was expecting, but it did get me thinking in places
2. The Art of Fielding - Chad Harbach (1/5/2019) - Quite strange in parts, but good, well-written, older-YA
3. The Rithmatist - Brandon Sanderson (1/7/2019) - REREAD
4. Behind the Beautiful Forevers - Katherine Boo (1/10/2019) - Very good, if somewhat depressing look at life in poverty in Mumbai
5. Skyward - Brandon Sanderson (1/12/2019) - Great science fiction, I look forward to the second one coming out in the fall

Off to a good start for the year!  Interestingly, these first 5 are all from different categories on my tracking spreadsheet - Nonfiction/Self-Improvement, General Fiction, Fantasy, General Nonfiction, and Science Fiction.

The year is off to a good start :)

1) 21 Questions for the 21st Century (Yuval Noah Harari) -thought-provoking and I'll likely re-read this
2) Braving the Wilderness (Brene Brown) * not usually a Brene fan but this was recommended and some great take-aways regarding dehumanizing language
3) Treating People Well: The Extraordinary Power of Civility At Work and In Life (Lea Berman & Jeremy Bernard) *former White House Social Secretaries
4) Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World (Cal Newport) *recommended by someone on the forum..quite interesting so far

1. Infernal Devices - Philip Reeve - 1/3/18

2. Sapiens - Yuval Noah Harari - 1/12/18 - UGH. Great subject, TERRIBLE execution. 200 pages of content in 430 pages of endless fucking lists and artificial dichotomies. Will never be reading another book from this author. He needs an editor to take the wind out of his (verbose, tedious, pedantic, excessive) sails.

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, J.K. Rowling and Stephen Fry (borrowed)
2. Wisp of a Thing, Alex Bledsoe (library)
3. The 2018 Best American Essays, ed. Hilton Als (mine)

4. The Language Instinct, Stephen Pinker (mine). Great intro to linguistics and language as an object of scientific study (I put an official Stamp of Recommendation on this one, while wearing my "I have a PhD in this" hat). Personable, sensible, enjoyable, and something I'd recommend to anyone looking to understand Language better.

I am now at 2/15 for pre-2019 books.

Currently reading:

Americanah, Chimimanda Adichie (mine)
Kindred: The Graphic Novel, Octavia Butler, Damian Duffy, and John Jennings (borrowed)

I'll officially join this year. I read 47 last year, hoping to crack 50 in 2019:

1. Go Find: My Journey to Find the Lost—and Myself by Susan Purvis-In progress

What are our feelings on counting audiobooks? Full credit as a book read? :)

2. Sapiens - Yuval Noah Harari - 1/12/18 - UGH. Great subject, TERRIBLE execution. 200 pages of content in 430 pages of endless fucking lists and artificial dichotomies. Will never be reading another book from this author. He needs an editor to take the wind out of his (verbose, tedious, pedantic, excessive) sails.

ha!
I recommend his latest if you ever decide to try him again @Bracken_Joy --it's more succinct and enjoyable

Is that the 21 things for the 21st century or whatever it is? The current time and future looking parts of Sapiens were my least favorite by far- it felt like being trapped in a college party with a drunk philosophy major who just wants to like, debate free will, even though I do *not* want to debate free will, tyvm. Especially given his delightful 1 line claim that we've conquered the patriarchy...  yeah, I think I'll skip that one too! Haha. If he had a better one on early human evolution, I might give it a couple years and try that one, but I really have no interest in his other views anymore.

Fair enough :)
I don't agree with all his points but found some of them really interesting (since they were quite unexpected and gave me something new to consider)

1. Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine (Gail Honeyman).

2. The Children Act (Ian McEwan)

@zoe2dot Did you finish the Eleanor Oliphant?  I enjoyed it, although not quite as much as I expected to based on all I'd heard.  It reminded me strongly of A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, which I think overall I preferred.
