5. The Most Good You Can Do by Peter Singer.

About effective altruism ie getting the most bang for your charity dollar. Very illuminating and after reading I am going to have a long hard think about my plan for ER. I was expecting to do various volunteer roles and also set up my own little not-for-profit little gig. But now I'm wondering if I should take a job and donate the income. Hmmm. In the meantime, I will talk to hubs, go over the budget and hopefully agree up a 10% donation schedule.

Been reading up a storm as I have a break from the semester and work is not as intense. I'm thrilled to be finishing off some of my partially read books (about 8) as well as to get a jump on the goal.

For those that have libraries that support OverDrive, there are ton of books that you might be able to get as ebooks for free. The extra push for me has been that some of the libraries have tighter deadlines and long wait lists, so I have 2 weeks to finish or go back onto a long wait list. Deadlines are helpful!

Again, thank you to the original poster as well as MMM for this community.

Books read in January:

1   The Secret - Byrnes
2   Girl, Wash Your Face - Hollis   (Had listened to this before reading, I LOVED it!)
3   (Un) Qualified - Furtick
4   Notorious RBG - Carmon
5   The Motivation Manifesto - Burchart
6   The Ideal Team Player - Lencioni
7   The Code of the Extraordinairy Mind - Lakhiani
8   The Joy Plan - Roman
9   Discipline Equals Freedom - Willink   (eBook version did not have pictures.)
10   Capital Gains - Gains
11   Five Second Rule - Robbins
12   Originals - Grant
13   Curious Mind - Grazer         (Great pointers for having more chutzpah as well as being prepared to speak with influential people.)
14   Show Your Work - Kleon
15   Work Rules - Bock
16   Power of Habit - Duhhig    (Exceptional book. Found it mentioned in several other books so had to read it!)
17   Never Get Angry Again - Leiberman
18   Lean In - Sandberg
19   Disrupted - Lyons
20   Power of Broke
21   Success Habits - Hill   (Interesting to see how the self improvement movement has used many of the same principles.)
22   Flow - Csikszentmihalyi
23   Option B - Sanders

@WorkingStiffABC Almost all of my books are ebooks from my library via Overdrive. I keep track each year of how much I have "saved" using library ebooks. It's been astounding!

My 9 year old has decided he is going to read more books than I am this year. I track his on a spreadsheet for him, and he finished #13 yesterday...gleefully. I love it so much.

@SquashingDebt We do sometimes read the same books. He's reading a lot of Rick Riordan right now, so I may read a few. He read A Wrinkle in Time last year so I (re)-read it too. I think he'll be getting his own kindle for Christmas this year. He already has a library card, so I'll set him up on Overdrive and he can read his little heart out. It is really quite awesome :)

I am slowly making my way through The Woman in White. It is good. It is SO GOOD. It is also 600 pages of fine print.

One day, I too will update my booklist. In the meantime... anyone else reading A Tome right now?

@diapasoun I just started the 4th book in the Song of Ice & Fire series.... ~1000 pages. Yikes. That'll take me some time. But I also listen to audio books in the car while I commute, so those will hopefully help to balance it out :)

I was not expecting to like this book so much! 19th century vibes + I want to know The Secret so bad.

Ganbatte! That was a fun book, but definitely took some time. :) Audiobooks are so excellent a use of commute time, though.

I'm not reading A Tome, but I started and quit two different books in a row, so I am not making much progress!

I started the Kindred graphic novel... and now am having trouble picking it back up, because that book is brilliant and also very painful to read. I need to sit down and just plow through it sometime soon here.

I'm also partway through a reread and am having the hardest time getting through it because I know something really sad happens at the end, but I don't remember quite enough to have it not sting so bad, and I'm scared.  Maybe I'll finish it this weekend....

1. A Very Large Expanse at Sea by Tahereh Mafi. (YA fiction about an American teenage girl post 9/11 - who happens to be Muslim.)
2. City of My Dreams (Mina drömmars stad) by Per Anders Fogelström. (Swedish classic. Absolutely brilliant. Why have I not read this before? Luckily it is the first part of a series.)
3. Children of Their City (Barn av sin stad) by Per Anders Fogelström. (Second book in the series. Life in the 19th century was not easy for workers in Sweden. Hence the emigration to the US. Not uplifting but a really good read.)
4. Swede Hollow by Ola Larsmo. (About the Swedish immigrants to the US in the 19th century. Too long to be really engaging).
5. We have to stop meeting like this (Vi måste sluta mötas på det här sättet) by Johanna Lindbäck and Lisa Bjärbo. (Feel good lit. Sometimes what you need in the February darkness.)

1. Laini Taylor - Strange the Dreamer
2. JK Rowling - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay
3. Drew Hayes - Siege Tactics
4. Charlie Holmberg - Smoke & Summons
5. Barry Eisler - The Killer Collective
6. Sarah Andersen - Adulthood Is A Myth
7. Lydia Kang - A Beautiful Poison

8. Laini Taylor - Muse of Nightmares

Sequel to my first book of the year. I liked the ending of this one a lot more than the first one, very satisfying while still leaving open the possibility for a great series based on the adventures of these characters.

6. Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy.

A short self help book on how to prioritise and get things done. It's a re-read but I needed a refresher..

@FireHiker I'm waiting too!

But I still have books 4 & 5 to work my way through, and then Fire & Blood (on hold waitlist at the library as we speak). I watched the show first and am now reading the books for the first time. Just finished Storm of Swords.... wow, that was a wild ride. Once I finish those, I will be eagerly and impatiently awaiting Winds of Winter...  If and when it ever comes out ;)

I am slowly making my way through The Woman in White. It is good. It is SO GOOD. It is also 600 pages of fine print.

One day, I too will update my booklist. In the meantime... anyone else reading A Tome right now?

I usually read one book at a time, but somehow right now I have not one but two tomes going!  I'm in a Middlemarch reading group, so I'm rereading that, and simultaneously I'm reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King.  I'm never gonna get to 50 books at this rate.  I might not get to ten.  :)

I read The Woman in White last year and LOVED it.

@allsummerlong Unfortunately Feast for Crows wasn't anywhere near as good as the first 3...but it's still better than nothing I guess. I'm really glad we'll get closure with the show at least!

Conspiracy by Ryan Holiday is fascinating. It digs into Peter Thiel's years long (successful) plot to ruin Gawker after they took it upon themselves to out him in a blog post.

The documentary about it is good too!

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, J.K. Rowling and Stephen Fry (borrowed)
2. Wisp of a Thing, Alex Bledsoe (library)
3. The 2018 Best American Essays, ed. Hilton Als (mine)
4. The Language Instinct, Stephen Pinker (mine)
5. Dreamsnake, Vonda McIntyre (library)

6. The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins (mine). Oh my GOSH this book was so good. Suspenseful, intricate, exciting; an excellent narrative structure (much more intriguing than most multi-1st person-POV novels), and characters I really enjoyed.

I am now at 3/15 for pre-2019 books.

Currently reading:

Americanah, Chimimanda Adichie (mine)
Kindred: The Graphic Novel, Octavia Butler, Damian Duffy, and John Jennings (borrowed)
Long Black Curl, Alex Bledsoe (library)
My System, J.P. Muller (online)
