I'm in . . . starting slow with The Chemist, which is basically a thinly veiled romance novel for teenage girls as far as I can tell.

I'm in.  I read a lot.  (200 books in 2017).  I tend to read pretty broadly, but for 2018 I'd like to do a focus on Russia --- so my goal is to read 50 books in that focus area (non-fiction in related disciplines, fiction written by Russian authors or set in Russia).  So, I'll be tracking that here.   Happy reading everyone.

I'm in. My focus this year will be divided among YA (to recommend books to my students), mindfulness/productivity, poetry (to push myself), and literary fiction (in the summer, when I can sink my teeth into them).

I'm in! I only made it to 33 books in 2017, but I used to read well over 100 per year... I'd like to get back to ~50 each year! Part of my problem is reading REALLY LONG fiction, but I've always done that, so I can't blame it on that =P I'm rolling the book I'm currently on from 2017 into my first of 2018.

I'll be joining in this challenge! I'm an avid reader, but I've fallen out of habit of grabbing good books at the library. I've just gotten a Kindle with loaded free books, so that'll make it even easier to reach my goal. I'm going to include fiction and non-fiction books.

I'm in!  Read Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology today in two sittings.  I don't think I will get through Sanderson's The Way of Kings that quickly!  I used to read voraciously as a teen, but college and work have left little time for personal reading..  Going to start listening to audio books on the way to work this year.

Oathbreaker (3rd book in the Way of Kings series) is my first book of the year!  Probably won't be my first one finished, though, those books are massive.

I have to say, it's quite interesting but kind of paints him as more of a narcissist than I already thought he was. He's obviously a genius, but the book paints him in a pretty bad light. Definitely a good read though.

Yeah it was a little dense at times! I’m sure I missed a lot, especially a lot of the more complicated explanations of Buddhist philosophy 🙂

Thanks for the recommendations, both this and the Silo series! I read the kindle book for Ready Player One. My commute is 2 miles (yes yes, I know I should be walking/biking) so I've never gotten into audio books.

I finished another over the weekend:

1. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
2. The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson

I clearly have no rhyme or reason to the theme of books I'll be reading this year! :)

I made a similar resolution, only this year I changed it from 50 books to 15,000 pages (of books). I’m also weighting the pages differently depending on the difficulty of the reading. This way I am not discouraged from reading lengthy, difficult nonfiction tomes, books in foreign languages, nor do I feel forced to finish books I really don’t want to finish.

So far I’ve finished The World As I Found It by Bruce Duffy, read 1/2 way through Girl with a Pearl Earing by Tracy Chevalier and one chapter of Mémoires d’Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar (weighted x2) for about 650 pages.

I also just finished The Hate U Give. It. was. so. good.

Yes!! I loved it! I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a fantastic job as well. The story itself was incredible, but I also thought it was extremely well-written. I love YA literature, but it's often difficult to find books that really sound as though they're written by a teenager/young adult, and not just an adult "acting" like a teenager.

I'm reading (listening to) The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead now and it's also phenomenal and the audiobook is by the same narrator as The Hate U Give.

I've been reading a ton lately--and for free too, since Orlando has an excellent public library.  I read really fast, but I save it for when I go to bed because reading in bed is comfortable.

Here's what I've read so far in 2018:

The Confessions of Young Nero by Margaret George.  She's been a favorite of mine for a long time, but recently the books have only been okay.  This was good, particularly since I don't get into Roman history that much.

The Power by Naomi Alderman.  Basically the alternate of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale in which women can electrocute people at will.  Alderman seems to be Atwood's protege; if you like Atwood you'll probably like this.  And speaking of Atwood ...

Alias Grace, by Margaret Atwood.  It's been out for decades but I never got around to reading it.  REALLY good.

Artemis by Andy Weir, who wrote The Martian.  The premise was good, but Weir writes women terribly.  Considering that the protagonist is a young Arabic woman, it doomed the book.

Gold Dust Woman by Stephen Davis.  This is an unauthorized biography of Stevie Nicks written by the guy who wrote one of the great rock biographies, Hammer of the Gods, so I had high hopes for it.  It.  SUCKED.  I finished it out of spite and blasted "Stand Back" to clear my mental palate.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed.  I try to avoid anything that Oprah recommends but it popped up in my "suggested for you" list.  I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

I also enjoy Wild..she is an engaging writer and her old column "dear sugar" is quite the read-through as well.

Will try to pick up an Atwood book this year, we had to read something in school and I never got into it back then. But I think I have been missing out :)

I actively went through Oprah's book club list on Goodreads to FIND books the other day, LOL. Alias Grace is on my list for this year.
