Since you started it I'll chime in 965k. Probably 970k when the dust settles from the market after today.  We're going to coast in on this one due to home value increases and pretty solid returns on the market this year. I still have about 60k left to dump in at this point.

I reached the double comma goal first on July 10.  Then it dipped the next day, but went back up and has stayed above that mark since then.  Today, my NW is $1,015,807.  Of that amount, $819,056 is cash and investments.  Of course, I would love to get the C + I amount up more, but now that I have retired (as of 6/30/18), my firehose of cash is no more.  :(

Anyway, I hope to be able to stay in the double comma club for a good while.  :)

Best of luck to the rest of you who are making progress towards this goal!!

$996K as of this morning - way ahead of schedule. I show our NW number to DH every time I get an update from Mint, and his most recent response was "so remind me, if we have so much money why can't we spend any of it?". Uh, we have so much because we don't spend it.

DH has really been struggling with our car choices lately. Even though he gets to drive the newer, nicer 8 year old car (he keeps it in pristine condition), he has been pushing hard to replace the 14 year old car that I drive (nearing 150K miles and not so pristine - we bought it used with a ton of miles already on it). I really hope to get at least 2 more years out of it and delay the purchase of a new-to-us car. My work schedule is a bit heavy right now but I hope to start commuting to work by bus/max in the next few months. That would easily give us another few years on the older car.

$933k ($700k Investments/Cash) here for DW and I, so we're right around you Chrissy.  With a really good last quarter in the market, there's a chance, but likely early/mid 2019 for us.

I woke up this morning a millionaire. Almost half of it is home equity (~$450K) but it feels like a major milestone just the same.  DH and I have nobody we can tell so I'm telling you strangers on the internet :)  Next goal is $1 million invested, but that may take a few years--current goal is 12/2021.

@PNW Lady, looks like we are right around the same place--congrats!

It really isn't until you reach one million invested that you start to think like a millionaire.   A level of confidence sets in.  Crazily your spending may actually start to drop.  I know ours has.  You will also be less tolerant to the crap you may have had to swallow when you were climbing this mountain.   You also start looking around wondering why everyone hasn't done this.

Rather than looking around and wondering you could be teaching. I hold classes for new hires and interns to discuss financial Independence. And give them the tools they need to make smart decisions jlcollins for how to invest, the mdm investment order, MMM for how to spend wisely. The world's worst market timer.

I'm also very vocal around friends and family about our goals. This doesn't always lead to immediate acceptance but along time friend recently approached me bc they know I understand this and is now after 5 years, reading about it ditching their advisor maxing their accounts.

Well, my "stretch" goal is looking pretty "stretchy" here with only 4 months to go.  Still, it's pretty remarkable to see 100K worth of net worth growth in 9 months.  As much as one can intellectually understand compounding interest and market returns, it's another thing entirely to see your net worth growing much faster than simply the dollars you're setting aside from your paycheck each period.  Pretty awesome!

This was fantastic reading the progress made over the year from all the new millionaires.  Wow!  The enthusiasm shown on these postings certainly encourages one to stay on course.

PNW Lady:

Everyone can't.  Good thing too.  If everyone was a "millionaire", then nobody would really be a true "millionaire."  The gained independence would be lost.

Do All you folks feel a certain weight lifted from you?  What's next?  Do you just go for two? How will you determine when it is time to make a course change in our lives?

We made it this year (in AUD, not USD).  Psychologically, it's been huge.  The figure includes our down payment for our first home, so maybe it's cheating, but I'm still excited.  And once we actually buy a place, our invested assets will (probably) dip well below 1M$, and we'll be able to do it all over again.

To answer your last question @pecunia:

All the problems that money can solve seem to disappear. Hint: most of them. It's as if a low-grade static that's been persistently buzzing in the background has suddnly been silenced. My IBL (Inner Bag Lady) seems to have gone on a permanent sabbatical, which is such a relief!

I'm just a blue collar worker, who'd listen to me?  Honestly I've tried spreading the message.  Some show interest and some show up the next week with a brand new Corvette.  Most would much rather talk to the note paying Corvette guy than me with an old beater Accord.  They simply can't conceive that my stash makes me thousands of dollars a week.  One guy came right out and asked me how much?  How much you worth?  He started throwing out numbers 500, 400 how much?  I never answered.   I recently told a coworker that it's over 2 million thinking that letting the number out would legitimize my advice.   Opposite effect.  Now they just think I'm a cheapskate. So unless they come to me for advice, I'm done teaching.

Why am I just seeing this?!  I've already made it (twice?!) but FWIW, I started the year at $895,654, and hit $1M on August 9th.  Then that second comma went away a couple days later, and came back again on the 21st.  It's sticking so far.  If it doesn't I'll just plow more cash into the market!  Good luck $1M seekers, I will be back to cheer you on!

I also have a newfound interest in cutting back on expenses having hit this goal.  This may be because $1M is a lot of $, but for my family, it is not enough to retire on yet.  We spent $56K last year!

Also, I was reading something about rewarding yourself for reaching personal goals, and to make sure your reward isn't counter to that goal... so for instance, if you have a goal to eat healthy and lose weight, and you reach that goal, don't go have a piece of cake to celebrate.  So I guess to celebrate saving money, I will reward myself by saving even more!

So close sitting at 995k when I ignore my corporate card expenses on PC. Won't consider that we made it till I can post that chart with 1MM on it. May go stand on the corner tonight and try to make that extra 5k.

Next week is my first 4 day reduce schedule too. Pretty cool to basically hit both milestones at the same time.

With the market this week, I was wondering if anyone hit the double commas.  Congrats @boarder42 !!!

Hope to join you shortly.  I've been sitting SO CLOSE at 998.5K this weekend but have a big ol' landscaping bill to pay that will set me back right before nailing it (unless we get lucky with the market on Monday).

Glad someone was able to do it!! ROCK ON!

This article is from 2016.

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/03/24/a-record-number-of-americans-are-now-millionaires-new-study-shows.html

It says there were 10.8 millionaires at the end of that year in US.  So, using 3 percent population growth there are probably about 12 million about now.

12 million / 350 million puts the people here in a class of 3.5 percent of the population.  That's one person in 28.  Mustachians are a small minority.

My trajectory did similar to yours. Flirted with $1MM then backed down. Guess it's not happening this year.

Optimists say the current economic downturn is temporary.  I've been told that when you invest your savings in a time when the market is down that you are getting "more bang for the buck."  If this is true, if you were at or close to a million before this recent downturn, with additional contributions at this time into VTSAX or similar index fund, you should overshoot it when the economy begins it's rebound.

It kind of puts a positive spin on the situation.

That's what I keep telling myself. I hit $1M in NW last year, but have been part of this challenge to hit it in investments only. A number of events have slowed that process and I'm backsliding. I keep telling myself it's ok because I'm buying on sale. It's just hard to watch it. I know that's irrational because it's not lost unless I have to sell, but it's still hard to watch.

It helps to watch the number of shares you own. They go up even faster when the stock market's "on sale".
