Because I receive SSDI for disability, my dependent son receives a benefit every month as well, until he turns 18. Thank you, wonderful social safety net.

He also has an expensive medical condition, but I'm able to keep our MAGI below the max. threshold for Medi-Cal eligibility in our state (CA), and it's critical that we keep this health coverage for him. Therefore, it's critical that he not be required to file taxes, because if he does, his total income is included in the family MAGI calculation, and he loses his Medi-Cal eligibility.

He receives 1389/month ($16,668), not enough to be required to file taxes, so this amount isn't included in our family MAGI.

He would like to work a summer job this summer, but I'm paranoid about him needing to file taxes because of the additional income, and throwing this precarious house of cards falling down.

Reading this IRS page, it *appears* that he could safely earn up to $8331 this summer (16668 + 8331 = 24999) and not be required to file taxes, but if anyone reads this information differently or has other experience with how these calculations work, I'd appreciate your thoughts. Having a job would be a great experience for him, but keeping his health care is paramount.
