W2 question- moved from NY to Florida
« on: March 04, 2019, 04:26:31 PM »
Greetings mustachians! I'm trying to do our taxes for 2018 and I'm wondering if I need to request corrected W2s from our employer. DH and I both work for the same employer which is headquarted in DC. Until September 2018 we lived and worked in NY State (not NYC). On 9/14 we sold our NY home and closed on the Florida house purchase, and moved in that day. Super lucky timing on that.

We continued working for the same employer, now living in Floroda and reporting to the local office in Florida, where there is no state income tax. I need to report the NY wages so we know our NY tax liability but on both of our W2s the full year's wages are listed in the state portion and labeled as NY. Is it ok for me to use the year to date amount on our last pay checks in NY - which coincide perfectly with our move date- or do I need to have the W2s reflect the actual NY earnings?

We also had our first child so I'm extra nervous doing our taxes this year. All the things! 😜

Thanks for any advice you have!

Did you file a change of address with your employer when you moved?

If so, that gives you even more leverage but in any case it seems a request to your payroll department for a corrected W-2 is in order.  Much easier to fight NY if you have the correct number on the W-2.

Thanks for the response! Yes, we use "workday" for personal information tracking and my husband and I both updated all our address information and had to elect all our benefits for the new location. Ugh dealing with corporate on a corrected W2 is a nightmare I have lived before (they thought I moved to Maryland once and randomly started Maryland withholdings) but I guess I need to bite the bullet.

Well HR got back to me- apparently NY State requires the annual wage for any resident who lived in NY for a full or partial year. It's up to me to find the NY portion
