Tricky situation for filing 2017 taxes (Multi-state income)
« on: January 19, 2018, 02:22:47 PM »
Hi All!  Weird, long post so thank you in advance for anyone who reads and replies.

I received a promotion during 2017 at a large corporation and when my payrate changed, so too did my home office location from Englewood, NJ to New York, NY.  This was done in error, but I didn't catch it for my paychecks received from January 20th to March 10th.  On paychecks from 3/10 onward, my location was switched back to my state of residence, NJ.  This period of pay from NY sources accounted for $12,573 in federal taxable gross income (calculated by adding up the number from the paystubs affected).

I've received my W2s for both NJ and NY and while they both accurately indicate how much in tax I paid to each state during 2017, they do not accurately specify how much of my income resulted in the taxes paid (both W2s list a similar, but not same amount in W2 Box 16 for State wages, tips, etc.).  Inputting these numbers into HR Block's online software results in me owing a huge amount of tax to NY, because they believe I earned all of my income in that state but I only paid tax on $12,573 of it.

I could use some guidance on how to proceed - does anyone know of an easier website for inputting my own numbers for the state returns?  I feel like HR Block doesn't allow me to change enough of the data from what I input for my federal return.  Should I consult a professional?  Request correct W2s from my employer?

If it's helpful, here is the info from my W2

Box 1 (Wages, tips, other compensation) - 113,160.82
Box 2 (Federal Tax Withheld) - 22,212.35
Box 3 (Social Security wages) - 125,341.98
Box 4 (Social security tax withheld) - 7,771.2
Box 5 (Medicare wages and tips) 125,341.98
Box 6 (Medicare tax withheld) - 1,817.46

401k contributions - 12,181.16

NJ Box 16 (State wages, tips, etc) - 114,587.41
NJ Box 17 (State income tax) - 5,091.77

NY Box 16 (State wages, tips, etc) - 113,160.82
NY Box 17 (State income tax) - 735.78

The W-2 is wrong.  An ounce of prevention....
