Taxcaster, what did they do!
« on: January 05, 2017, 12:45:54 PM »
I used Taxcaster for a number of years to just play with numbers online, it worked rather well, this years Taxcaster kind of stinks, not so sure this is an upgrade, its a little clumsy I think.

I guess you get what you pay for:)

Anybody have another tool they use to run quick thumbnail tax sketches?

Edit:

Here is the old version, newest version I could find was 2013!

Here's a recent Bogleheads thread on the same topic: https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=197753

The Taxact calculator seems more like the old taxcaster (less step by step than the new one): https://www.taxact.com/tools/tax-calculator.asp

I thank you, that is much better.

In that vein, there is also the 'Calculations' tab in the case study spreadsheet.

Not comprehensive, but seems correct enough for what it does do.

The Jackson Hewitt website has a tax calculator (under Resources, at the very bottom of their website).  I've used it to play around with my 2016 numbers (just to check).

It doesn't appear to be up to date though (tax tables seem to be for 2015).

It's too bad the tax tables aren't updated, I just tried this one and it says I should owe $10,584 in federal taxes. My withholding was $10,583.94. Estimating within six cents would surely get me some kind of award. ;-)

Ha ha, that's pretty good.  I ended up overpaying my estimated taxes in 2016 (I should have used their tool last year!).  And I should have read the GoCurryCracker posts pinned above (tax rate on ordinary dividends and capital gains when you're in the 15% tax bracket = 0% :  I had no idea....).  Oh well, I can't wait to do taxes this year as I'll be getting that money back!
