taxact - state and local tax refund
« on: February 04, 2018, 09:59:32 AM »
Does anyone know how the state and local tax refund summary page works in taxact?
I had a state refund of $1000 in 2016 after filing married jointly.

Doing my taxes now for 2017, Turbotax simply asks for the 2016 state refund amount and it determines whether it's taxable or not. However, with taxact, it's a little confusing, it is asking for the 2016 refund amount for myself and separately for my spouse. Since I'm filing jointly, is this just how taxact does it? should I just enter the refund amount in the box that's designated for me and leave the one designated for my spouse empty?
I attached a screenshot of the page just in case my question does not entirely make sense.

I have used TaxAct for a number of years.  I don't think it will matter either way.  I would probably do as you suggested: enter total in the first box and 0 in the spouse box.
