Taxact bug?
« on: January 10, 2016, 07:07:57 AM »
I think I've found a problem in the way taxact deals with nonresident state tax returns. As a resident of VA who earns some side income in MD, I am exempt from MD state taxes thanks to a reciprocal agreement between these states. I will, of course have to include this income on my VA return. Taxact insists that I owe MD state taxes in addition to the VA tax, even though it knows I am a full time resident of VA. Is there a way to force taxact to do this right, or do I have to file my MD state return separately? I've been unable to find a way to get in touch with taxact support about this issue.

It did the same thing to me last year but I didn't notice at the time; I will have to file an amended return to get the refund I'm due.

If any of you have income in states in which they don't reside, I recommend checking up on your tax software!

FYI, for posterity, per taxact the workaround here is to manually delete all MD income from the forms so that a full refund is shown. This is apparently a known issue on their end.

Seems like the software should be smart enough to do that, since it knows my state of residence. Next year I will likely skip the software and do it myself...
