Inaccurate 1099-DIV from Vanguard
« on: January 26, 2021, 01:00:06 PM »
Just a note of caution for anyone else with a taxable brokerage account at Vanguard: several funds are either missing or inaccurate, according to several reports over on Bogleheads. Mine is off by about a dollar.

You compared the 1099-DIV to what you see in the activity?

Could the $1 be a rounding error?

Correct; the total dividend on the 1099 less any foreign tax paid should (and for most funds, does) match the actual dividends in transaction history. This year there are several funds (mostly international funds of various flavors) for which something is wrong. It sounds like it's pervasive, not a rounding error, and a corrected 1099 is likely coming in February.

Mine and my Dad's match exactly to the penny between transaction history and 1099-DIV.  But neither of us own any mutual funds with foreign taxes paid.

Do you have some links where I can read more about this?

It makes sense that it's the international funds that are off. Foreign companies may not have the same reporting dates as US ones. This is why 1099-DIVs can be reissued in February.

I'm not sure if links to another forum are ok, but there's a thread on Bogleheads on the first page at the moment with 1099-Div in the title. The latest update seems to suggest the 1099 may in fact be correct, but I'll certainly be holding off on submitting my tax return until I'm more confident it won't change later.

Links to the Bogleheads forums have been posted before, pretty sure its fine. I can't seem to find it. Are there hidden subforums that require an account to see?

Edit: I hadn't looked at the main page, just the forums directly. I assume this is the thread in question?

I read through the thread. Sounds like an additional or corrected 1099 should be expected by February 18th and the following funds are affected (per a response from Vanguard):
1. Emerging Markets Stock Index Fund
2. International Value
3. FTSE All-World ex-US Index Fund
4. Institutional Total Stock Market Fund
5. GNMA Fund
6. Real Estate Index (REIT) Fund

Multiple people stating that VTIAX is not affected. I haven't checked my own Vanguard 1099 yet.

Here's a different issue to be aware of at Vanguard: anyone who switched to the new brokerage platform this year will receive two sets of tax forms, one for the old one platform, one for the new one.
