My wife and I have a 2 year old who goes to daycare at the YMCA. They charge $150/week for members (the child being a member, which requires a parent to be a member – they do not allow children under 10 to have their own membership) and $180/week for non-members. Membership is $41/month for an adult, plus $15/month for a child. So, I’m spending $56/month for memberships to save $120/month in daycare, so it’s definitely worth it.
My question is, I only have ~$7050 ($150*47 weeks) in daycare costs. I would like to take advantage of the whole $8000 costs allowed in the new Dependent Care Credit. Would these memberships be considered childcare costs? I only have the membership (and my 2 year old certainly does) because of the reduced daycare rate.
I think SeattleCyclone, MDM, etc usually weigh in on these type questions, and I fanboy pretty hard when they do. If someone can send up a batsignal, I'm not sure how to.
Thanks,
Cody
