non-profit taxes
« on: September 05, 2017, 02:02:28 PM »
hi,

Does anyone have resources or guides they would recommend for learning about non-profit taxes?
This is in the context of a PTA which is small and not so complicated.

I'm working my way through this NOLO book currently.

Any recommendations on tax filing software?
The book mentioned some web-sites that offer free or discounted tax filing software.

If your gross receipts are less than $50,000 a year then you should be eligible to file a form 990-N, which you can file electronically for free through the IRS.

thanks for the response.  My PTAs have gross receipts above that amount.

Two useful resources I found after finishing the NOLO book.
1) https://efile.form990.org/
software to help prepare and file form 990
apparently, Free for organizations with less than $100k in gross receipts.
I'll probably be trying this out in the next few months.

2) techsoup.org
a bunch of different things for me to investigate on this site.
They have discounted software after you pass their non-profit certification.
for example - www.techsoup.org/accounting

They also have some forums which might be a better place for me to post my questions =)

And finally, they are the certification method if you want to apply to https://www.google.com/nonprofits/
