1099-R and taxable amount $0
« on: February 04, 2019, 08:45:03 PM »
I filed my taxes already but then received a 1099-R for a direct rollover from my 401k. The taxable amount (box 2a) is $0. Do I need to file an amended return? I tried searching the internet but I'm coming up with conflicting information.

You'll need to amend your return to add the rollover amount to box 4a on Form 1040 and then write "ROLLOVER" next to box 4b.  See the instructions for Form 1040, page 29, top of the left column, Exception 1.

Thanks! Looks like page 32 of the 1040 instructions specifically talks about rollovers, though it boils down to the same thing in my case. I used FreeTaxUSA to file and their website says I can't file an amended return until Feb 11th. They also have a general recommendation to wait for the refund to come through first before filing an amended return to see if the IRS corrects stuff automatically.
